T.J. Maxx bad customer service in tjmaxx, norwalk ct (ct ave)

HI! I had very bad experience in Tjmaxx Norwalk CT (CT ave), manager was rood and ignored when he was "helping" with my return. He didn't even look at my item and told me that I can't return it because I don't have receipt. This sterling silver necklace came from this TJMAXX, there are other jewelry in exactly same boxes. I'll will bring this issue to corporate headquater.
If you need to return an item in TJmaxx and you don't have receipt, it will be a big problem.

I have been overcharged and called the manager as soon as i got home. She was extremely rude! She took my name and address and promised to send out a gift card. This was probably 3 months ago... Still no gift card. I didn't really care because it was only 12.99 but she was just sooooo rude and not once did she apologize. I'm very disappointed with T.J. Maxx in Greensburg PA!

Did you still have the price ticket? Otherwise, it's perfectly reasonable to deny a return lacking a receipt. Without a receipt, there is no real proof it was purchased there.

T.J. Maxx rude attitude and bad management

I had bought 2 watches from the Westminster store (at Colorado) before the Christmas and returned them at the Superior store today. Before the return, I asked the counter that if it would be ok to return the jewelry items at this location (Superior Colorado). The merchant is in the same condition as when was purchased, with the price tags and the receipt. The lady kindly told me yes at first; however, her attitude became very rude after getting the manager/supervisor's signature. She told me, "Please return the jewelry items to the store you bought, because this just kills us." Then turned away immediately.

To my defense, I had asked if it was acceptable to return the jewelry items from the different store. If the policy is not to accept the return merchandise from the other stores, please explain it at first; DO NOT put the blame onto the customers afterward. Such attitude is NOT professional.

I used to shop at the Superior TJ Maxx store frequently but have stayed away from it as much as possible since the past couple years. Mainly I have been very frustrated with the poor customer service and bad attitude received at this store. I hope TJ Maxx management recognizes the importance of customer service and work with this store employees for service improvement.

TJ Maxx has always been one of my favorite places to shop - until now. There has never been an issue with my payments over the 30 years I have shopped at this store. I have often written checks, as well as used credit. Last week-end, I was told my check was not authorized by the Certegy Credit System used by the store. My check had my name (rather unique...

T.J. Maxx missing child

I was at T J max today, 11/08/08, around 4:00 pm to about 5:00 pm at 590 Amherst St. Nashua, with my four children, when in 60 seconds my 3 year old was missing i went to the front of the store and told costumer service to make sure they stay at the front door to make sure no one left with a 3 year old with a green shirt and blue jeans and blonde hair. The lady acted a little concerned, but continued with her purchase, she didn't even say over the loud speaker that a little boy was missing, and didn’t send and employee to search for him, or locked the doors for no one to leave the store . At this point, as well as you know it only takes seconds for someone to leave the store with your child I was very concerned in T J Max's procedures. Your employee's should of know better on how to react in a situation like this.

I agree with Tiffany H, it's not the store's responsibility to babysit your child while in the store. They have to run a business. Yes, it would've been nice for the clerk to watch the store, but amongst watching the store, customers, your child, etc... things may get a bit frazzled for her. I would not announce on the loud speaker the description of the child, for the sake of the crazy predators that may have been in the store and prey on kids. Thank goodness the child was found; but I don't think it's worth a complaint to file to the store headquarters because you misplaced your child... and yes, i am a parent. Also, maybe speaking with headquarters about adding code adam would be nice, but again, i wouldn't complain without a solution because the parent wasn't watching her child.

I disagree, Tiffany H must either a) never had children, or b) must have been extremely blessed to have had the most perfect children ever created. Unless a parent is being negligent this situation can happen to anyone. I have 2 children and no it has never happened to me, but I know it can happen in an instant. I work for a large retailer and this is a common occurrence. We have in place a "Code Adam" alert that our operators announce over the intercom with a brief description (in a NON identifying manner) of the child. This alerts employees immediately to look for the child, but to watch all exits to make sure no one tries to exit with the child. We are all trained what to do in this situation. I think T J Max should definitely review this and hopefully this Mom has alerted the Store Manager as well as their Corporate Headquarters.

It's not their responsibility to lock their store doors and search for your child. You should have been holding his hand or had him in a cart upon entering the store.

Since you have 4 children START WATCHING THEM. It is not our fault you feel overburdened. Be a better parent, use birth control etc. Stop blaming stores and others for your own shortcomings.

T.J. Maxx random policies

I love TJ Maxx. I would like to say I will not shop there again but I know I will with all the great deals. I wil not shop at the Plattsburg store again. The store manager at that store has decided that following corporate policy is not for her. Last christmas I purchased a tin of candy and left the tags on and it was still sealed. I had the reciept and it was 8 days later when I returned. I was denied the return with the statement that they did not return food products. I asked to see where posted. It was not. Then it was "well that is seasonal " I asked where it was posted that seasonal not returnable. It was not. I called customer service from store and they stated" that yes food was returnable when sealed and they do take back seasonal merchandise." this was for a 7.99 item I could not believe it. The solution was for me to mail back the item to corporate recieve a full refund for product and shipping and a certificut. I was told that they could not make the manager take back refund but they would. does not seem like customer service is thriving to me.
Gets better next. I recieved a birthday present from my husband of a pair of reef flip flops 11 dollars. Great deal but I did not like color and I just got a different pair week before that he did not know about. The tag was detached and stapled to reciept. Went to return and got the "we don't take back seasonal merchandise" Again I asked where is this stated? My reciept clearly stated withing 30 days full refund and the merchandise was still on shelf. It had been 12 days. The cashier stated that her manager said she could not take back that she had to listen to her and that it did not matter what the reciept said. I asked to speak to manager and another assistant manager said she could take back this time but scolded me and said that it was a one time only thing. Just wanted to share this lousy service.

Wow! am I disapointed in TJMaxx! I, too, love TJMaxx. In fact it is my favorite store of all. I am not a clothes buyer usually but their linens, dishes, and cooking/baking items are great. I also buy some foodstuffsfor occasions. I live in Ohio and hope that I never have to go through when you went through. After hearing your story I am now prepared in case I get such a run-around. First of all, stores should not return food items, if they do they must destroy it due to contamination. Yes, before you start gawking, I read you said it was sealed, however it is amazing what people will do with a syringe. I am curious why you would return a food product unopened. I have never returned a food item to a grocery store. Are you a compulsive shopper? However, I do realize I may be the exception in that I try to make wise decisions when purchasing so as not to have to return merchandise.

Second, there is no store or company who would tell you to ship food back to them at a corporate office and they would mail you a refund. If customer service truly believed you were in the right they would have called the store manager and if necessary, the district manager and instructed them to return the merchandise.

Last, there would be no reason to refuse the return of your reef slippers after only a few days (within 30 days), even if they are seasonal seasons do not change that quick, but they are not necessarily seasonal merchandise. The only seasonal merchandise retailers refuse to return within 30 days is holiday merchandise once the holiday has passed, but that still does not stop customers from trying to return it, after they have used it no doubt. The only reason I could fathom they would refuse your return is because the ticket was not attached, meaning the merchandise could have been used or come from another retailer. I'm curious who's spouse would even buy them a mere pair of flip flops for a gift, sounds cheesy. I think there is more to the story than you are telling, if so, you should get your facts straight before you start bad-mouthing a company on a public website. If you do have your facts straight then I would be talking to the district manager and taking care of this problem rather than complaing about it for sympathy on a website. If this store truly treats you this way it is a problem within that particular store, not the company as a whole.

In closing, a true TJ Maxx customer knows the policy and procedure, respects the store's policies, understands why they exist, and does his/her best to comply with those policies. On the rare chance he/she has a special exception he/she goes to the store manager in a professional/understanding manner and asks for that exception, if that does not work he/she goes to the next level, district manager, at this point he/she should feel the company has done what it can to resolve the issue and if he/she still feels this was unfair, then by all means file a complaint with consumer affairs.

The receipt says "Other restrictions may apply", which pretty much means the store can decide what to return and what not to return if it's not worth returning. Food cannot be resold after having been returned. After it's returned it has to be marked out of stock and thrown in the trash.

However, with the flip-flop return, that's pretty strange. The store I go to will take back anything that's in season, but if it's way out of season, and over 30 days it can't be taken back until it's back in season. (Like if you try to return flip flops in winter)

T.J. Maxx fraud and cheating

Many companies/retailers no longer force customers to provide their phone numbers (if their phone number is unlisted) when paying products via personal check. As long as all other ID is provided by the customer, the cashier of a retail store will simply write "unlisted" on the check and move forward and process the customer's transaction. This, however, is not the policy at TJ Maxx in Escondido, CA. In making a small purchase for my daughter, the cashier and the manager insisted on a phone number. I could easily have made up any number and they would have ignorantly accepted it, but I wanted to let them know that my number was unlisted and they could certainly find me via the DMV or my home address. Besides, what is the use of paying extra for an "unlisted" phone number if I need to give it up each time I write a check? Since they were not willing to work with me to complete my purchase, I asked for my check back and walked out. On the way out the store, the female cashier rudely yelled back at me and my 6 year old daughter, "have a nice day", in the most sarcastic way, in front of more than a dozen people in line. I didn't acknowledge her since she clearly displayed how unprofessional and immature she was. The Manager did not do anything to reprimand her actions, either. TJ Maxx in Escondido, CA, will never earn my patronage again and I now tell everyone my story. The store will need to change their policy regarding check transactions and must teach their employees acceptable customer service and professional conduct, before I can recommend them to my family or friends again.

Gator is right. The store did not arbitarily make up this policy. They require PH#s on checks because the 3rd party vendor, Certegy, whom they go through for check approval, will guarentee the funds of the check if it goes through the system ONLY if certain information is obtained from the customer. One of which is the PH#.

And to be honest, if you are so paranoid about giving out your information, then you really should reconsider using checks as your primary form of payment. Because on that single sheet of paper, you have just handed a complete stranger your name, address, ID #, bank account #, and routing #. Any of which you would normally never give to a complete stranger if they asked you.

I love it when nasty salespeople who think they have the "power" to decline a return because of their unprofessional
bias, call the manager over, and the manager tells them to give us our damn money back. Who do these cashiers
think they are? If it wasn't for our bucks, you wouldn't be making your six dollars an hour. Management knows this, its about time the clerks learn this lesson also. You're a cashier, ok. Your not REALLY in control, like you want to be. And stop telling your friends and family to come in for the "hook up" when the manager leaves. Often times
it is not the customers stealing, but "set ups" by employees. Otherwise, the Clerks would at least look up and pretend
they are surprised when the alarm goes off when one of their friends walks out of the store with merchandise.

First off, I don't know of any retailer who will take a check without a phone number. These days companies process their check approvals through a third party who guarantee the check they are verifying prior to the retailer accepting the check. One of the criteria is the check must have a phone number. You can give a fake phone number, although that does constitute fraud on your part, but that is between you and the judge, not that it would really go that far; however, if the third party approving the check requires the person accepting the check to call with additional info and you give a fake number it will be automatically declined as well as any future checks you might write with a company using this same third party.

Writing a check is a priveledge, it is not a RIGHT. If you don't want to give your personal information as you so stated, then don't be giving a complete stranger a piece of paper with your checking account information. You do realize your checking account information is much more valuable than your phone number, right? An unlisted phone number cannot be traced on white pages.com, but the cashier can use your address to find your home or use your account number online to pay his/her bills.

If you are really that concerned you should use a debit card and if you are too paranoid they will steal your pin number then perhaps to need to revert to using cash. I wonder if you would take a check from a complete stranger just because they assure you it is good? I am guessing you would not. Before you criticize someone else for their behavior please think of your own behavior and what you would do if the role were reversed and don't pitch a tantrum in a blog online unless you can be certain you are in the right and even then I would think twice about it. What goes around, comes around and karma is not that pretty for some of us. By the way, who did you think was going to really care about calling you? You do realize there is not some little man in the register copying down phone numbers, right?

you are just wasting everyones time here. It is not the employees fault that you dont like to give out your number, its not like they can just change their policy right there for you. And when their are customers like you, it is very difficult for the cashier not to be mean/rude to you!

Wow, and you're calling her immature when you're the one who couldn't be mature enough to just use a different form of payment? What an idiot you are. And to take your check back and walk out, you think that's mature of you? Now you're just leaving more work for the employee to put your things back. And how is that a fraud or cheating? [censored].

If you don't like giving out your phone number when writing checks, get a debit card! For you to have taken the cashier's time to write the check, then to change your mind based on you being paranoid about your phone number, it is inconsiderate, when you could have just swiped a debit card, and either signed or punched in your PIN and be done with it. No waiting period to return, money comes out faster, and no PHONE NUMBER.

Oh and might I add. Most retailers asks for an Identification for credit card purchases. So if you were to try and purchased an item there & couldn't because you had no form of identification. Would you be here complaining as well? Not only did your waste your own time, but you wasted the employees & manager time. So stop making excuses for your stupidity & blaming everyone else but yourself.

How does this complaint categorize as fraud & cheating? I don't understand your complaint one bit. They didn't take your check without a phone number. You didn't receive your purchased items. In other words, "NO TRANSACTIONS WERE EVER MADE." No business were exchange.

Most retailers insist on phone numbers, in case your checks bounces. You can either give out your number or give out a fake one. It's nobody's fault you're a ### who chooses to pay by check instead of cash or credit.

T.J. Maxx bait 'n switch

I shopped at TJ Maxx today and I saw some great jeans on a rack. I thought they would make an awesome present for my girlfriend who really likes this particular brand.

The sign on the rack said $79.99. However, when I went to the checkout, they came up at $99.99.

I told the cashier that the price was wrong. We could both clearly see the sign and the nice cashier agreed with me.

Then the manager decided to step in and veto the 79.99 (correct) price. She said that some of the jeans on the rack were 99.99. I showed her the signage. It says 79.99, not 79.99 and up. She agreed with the verbiage of the sign, but still would not give me the 20.00 difference in price. I think that's called bait and switch, right? Lure you in with one price and then make it more expensive. Good thing I've been trapped in retail for the past 6+ years. I have some connections with TJ Maxx. Just wish I didn't have to go through all of this because the manager had a chip on her shoulder despite her store's incorrect signage. Time to battle!

I just bought 02 fragrances Burberry at Tjmaxx. Both have the red tag $22.00, one in my receipt was charged correct, the other was charged $29.00. I just realized today while I overlooked the receipt.
So, this is not sign mistake, that someone place the item at the wrong spot. Who ever is defending the store ... check out my receipt!

As my unnamed store manager started morning meetings "our customers are pigs but..." Things get put in the wrong place. One time someone put a handmade $5 sign meant for mismated socks on the cashmere sweater table. Did I honor that? Do I have brain damage? The nice cashier is nice cuz you are psyching out, so they smile and nod so you don't snap.

Those racks are there to try to make it easier for customers to find what they're looking for and for people who do not like to dig through long runs of clothes. Many customers find items and then change there mind and just set hang them on whatever is closest. In the future, remember that all items are priced according to what the TJ Maxx ticket says, not necessarily the sign. The signs usually tell the maximum price of items on that display or what vendor the clothes are from.

"Ryan With Connections", if you have worked in retail for six plus years then you know the drill and you are wrong. First, that is not what they call a "bait & switch". Second, a retailer is only obligated to sell the merchandise for the price on the ticket, if it is the correct ticket or otherwise what we in 20+ years of retail experience call the "correct price". Several things could have caused this error, you moved the sign from another fixture, an associate added the jeans to the fixture without realizing the sign did not match the price on the jeans (human error, glad you're perfect though), the pair of jeans you got were the only pair on the rack because a customer placed them there when they decided on the 79.99 jeans instead of the 99.99 jeans they had originally selected, or someone was in the process of filling the rack due to selling and had not yet changed the sign. I am sure none of these occurred to you since you have connections and a lot of retail experience. I would think someone with retail experience would consider some of these options and give the store some latitude, these kind of comments are something you expect from a customer ignorant of retail practices.

I find myself wondering where you work, I would be curious to see if your store is perfect. If not I would most definitly have to contact your supervisor and write a letter to post on the internet. Oh yeah and mention my connections within your company.

Okay, maybe someone just put that jean there. If you work in retails before then you should know that whatever price is on the ticket is the price for the item. DUH! Genius. :) It's only 20 bucks different. Quit being cheap! It's ###en TJ Maxx man, you could of paid more!

T.J. Maxx poor shopping experience

To whom it may concern,

Hi. I live in moore sc. I am new up here in the state of sc just 6 months. I need to tell you i am quite surprised how the merchandise is different from my old state of boca raton, fl. The clothing in the stores are not the nicest of collections and things. I am an avid shopper of tj maxx i would like to express to you. I was such a frequent shopper in the boca raton store, that they always welcomed me by name as i arrived. The clothes were magnificent as well as the collections. Each time it is a constant struggle to find anything worth buying as, the store carries 1. A lot of small sizes. (not everyone by the way is a 4)! 2. The clothes are just not nice. By this time of year leather and suede would come out and i would go home with lots of bag fulls of fall clothing. 3. The store is never orderly. Things on the floor, clothing squeezed in through little room racks! I am hoping you look into this matter as i am quite disappointed toeven want to shop in there! I will however, compliment you guys for your homegood store marshall's in greenville. Although it is 27 miles from me i enjoy going to shop there as it reminds me of the one in boca raton. Full of great items! Always. Please take these concerns as constructive criticism, as i would like to continue shopping in spartanburg, sc. Thanks for your time. Ps: i have overheard other people saying the same thing!

Sincerely,

One of your best customers

T.J. Maxx declined checks

Hello, I am one of the customers whose card number was stolen or whatever. My credit card company replaced the card and I suffered no ill effects.

However, twice now, in State College, PA and Williamsport, PA, I have had good checks declined by your system. I nearly always used a credit card before, but I switched to checks because of the card snafu. I buy a couple thousand dollars worth of merchandise from your company yearly (in fact, just a couple months ago I bought over 150.00 dollars worth of things from the store in Morgantown, WV, paid by check, and nothing terrible happened).

Now, I know you have a new system, but both times it was personally humiliating and without precedent or purpose. There I am, a fifty-one year old tenured college professor, who paid back all my loans for the Ph.D, and also own a thriving jewelry and antique store. I always had my ID, never spit on the floor, or otherwise showed myself to be a risk. But I go to a store, gather up 128 and 178 dollars worth of merchandise (respectively), am asked for my driver's license, the poor helpful clerk makes a phone call, and both times I am declined by your system.

Both times I asked to speak to the managers, who, while apologetic, explain that there is nothing they can do (ah, corporate America), offer to hold the merchandise (what? so I can slink in later with cash to prove I have the money?), and generally I am made to feel like a potential thief.
I called the number myself, where I finally talked to a person, who said their computer says it is a risky purchase (!)! My check numbers are somewhere in the 900's, I have mortgages on a home and a commercial property, and am a thoroughly upstanding literature professor who does not seem to fit into any of the risky categories (I don't spend 1500 dollars in checks in a few days, which manager # 2 thought might make that computer suspicious).

Here's the thing. I know you don't need me. But, by God, I want to know what is going on. First my credit card is at risk, simply because I used it at your stores. Then when I try to make purchases with a check, I am treated like a pariah. Frankly, I have had it. You have got to explain and make it right with me. I don't care if you don't have the information to explain--you should get it. When I spoke to customer service after the first check decline, the man simply parroted what the guy at Certegy said ("we don't have anymore information; all we know is that it is a risky purchase").

I also know you customer service folks work hard and don't need me either, but I burst into tears in both stores. It actually hurt my feelings that a company I have been so loyal to would treat me so badly. That's how "risky" I am.

There is a long term employee in the State College store who I have chatted with for several years about his family, his workday, and what he plans for holidays. He is a bit shy but a kindly man; since he did not wait on me the day my check was declined, I had to see him at the next checkout as I was sent on my way, looking embarrassed and sad that I would turn out to be a thief.

This same exact thing happened to me yesterday at TJ MAXX. I wasn’t given a Real reason as to why my check would not go through, even after calling certegy. All they could tell me was that it wasn’t accepted due to TJ Maxx’s new policy. I called the bank to make sure everything was okay. Everything was fine. My husband and I are both very hard workers and this is the type of treatment we get for it?! Very sad. We have saved and saved. What on earth type of program would anyone have that would deny somone who clearly has more than sufficient funds. I don’t get it. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that an addict can come in with stolen credit card and buy $500 worth of merchandise but my $80 check will not clear?! It wasn’t even about being embarrassed for me. I could have cared less about that. I felt wronged, I felt almost as if this were unfair treatment. As if I had been discriminated against for some unfair uneducated reason. This opens my minds up to other questions and poses a real concern for how these agencies will collect and share my information. Since I’ve been denied through one service, will that result in other denials? Before anyone responds with the absurd question of “why didn’t you pay cash or card?” I obviously didn’t have any other form or I would have used it. Any help with this would be appreciated. For the record after I left TJ Maxx, I went straight over to ROSS and ended up purchasing almost everything there that I had picked out at TJ MAXX only ROSS had better prices and that accepted my check so graciously💜.

Old thread but a quite stupid TJ Maxx " policy".? They turn down checks for no good reason. In fact, I'm the same age bracket and geographic location ( Altoona, PA) as the poster...simply a few years later. 700 bucks or so in the account for an 85 dollar purchase, valid PA ID, no reason to deny. They give some horse crap bad check pattern blah blah blah. With current technology, the check transaction should be immediately confirmable. I think it's completely TJ policy and not the confirmation service they use.

First, I have to respond to Laura Reed's comment; Laura, a check is legal tender, if it were not a legal tender it would not be accepted as such. Second, if you are using checks as your choice of tender please be aware writing a check is a privelege and not a RIGHT. Any person or company has a right to refuse a check for any reason, especially if a third party who guarantees your check is "good" tells them it is not good. Third, when your check is declined by a retailer it does not indicate you have a check returned with that particular retailer, it means you have a check returned with a retailer within the network of the certifying company or have outstanding checks (uncleared checks) that could possibly cause your account to be overdrawn. If you are writing checks pending a future deposit, it is called "Kiting" and it is considered bank fraud, a federal offense, even if you anticipate a deposit within the next twenty-four hours. Lastly, who still writes checks in a place of business? Checks are the easiest ways for common criminals, including the businesses employees, to steal your bank account information. Get a debit/credit card; while debit cards may have their risks, they are less risky than a book of checks floating around and yes, I know there have been issues with identity theft due to credit card numbers being stolen from computer intrusions and such, but there are so many other ways to get your information and credit card companies do credit your account for fraudulent charges, but a bank will not automatically credit your account for stolen checks.

Lastly, people need to stop being to so quick to blame everyone for their problems, embarassments and short-comings. Take responsibility for your actions or lack of action, admit you may have over-extended your credit limit, your bank account or whatever else you may have done to cause your check or credit card to be declined. I cannot believe how much I see adults become spoiled brats with the mentality of a five-year old kid in stores, on television reality shows and so on. People always want to save face by blaming someone else and do not even consider the consequences that someone may lose their job, a promotion, or some other repurcusions due to a customers distorted or plain dishonest complaint.

As a long time retail employee it never fails to amaze me that it is the store causing stress and embarrassment when the customers check or credit card is declined, like the clerk is the one making the decission. My favorite is that they expect a manager to force it through for them. Checks, as someone pointed out, are not legal tender, and the riskiest form of payment for an establishment to accept, and there is no obligation to do so.

Doc Postlethwaite,

You are right, it was wrong of me to assume just because you have a phd you make decent money. I only have a BS, and went to professional school (1 year internship) for national licensing for what I do and I now make six figures, and I have time for al ife. I have friends who went the masters and phd route who are now toiling in thankless, boring research jobs barely making $60k... and they have no lives. Thank god I decided not to go for the phd. Besides, we all know phd really means: "piled higher (and) deeper." MD, MBA, pharmD...that is the way to go. But a $30 TJ Maxx gift card--that was well worth the tears and heartache!

Iris,

At least I am articulate enough to have an actual opinion. If you want to call that judgemental, then fine, so be it. I don't want to be the person who just sits there and reads other people's opinions and churns out some weak, lame comment. Come back and post when you have something worthwhile to say. By the way, the word I think you meant to use in one of your sentences is "your, " not "you're." Please talk with Doc Postlethwaite, she sounds very intelligent and could probably help you with your usage problems.

Goodness. Now I know why I don't generally blog. The terms people use to describe people they don't know simply amaze me. While I disagree with Laura, I would not be so unkind as to suggest she is ###. By the way, the term "###" is doubly unkind since mental ###ation refers to people in our society who have some limitations in mental capacity--I refer interested people to the http://www.aamr.org/ website of the THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION ON INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (AAIDD).

An update is in order. I got a very sincere apology from T J Maxx, a 30.00 gift card, and the assurance my checks would not be refused again.

As consumers, we should have the power to protest unfair treatment. Note that my original letter did not attack the stores personally, but demanded to know why my check should be singled out for refusal by the new system (and also that I used checks because my credit card info was stolen previously by thieves who infiltrated their credit card info).

Like many Americans, I don't carry much cash. I still believe that checks are good currency if you don't have a record of bouncing, and have a 500.00 check coverage by my bank even if I did. I don't use credit cards, which I wouldn't use at TJ Maxx anyhow.

One of the hazards of the big box stores is that we can be reduced to a number in a system when we are just people who pay their bills. Part of my emotional distress, which I believe is valid, is that I went to school at Penn State, scene of the most distressing incident, for about 17 years and during that time became part of the community, with several long term retail positions in local stores. I also saw how local stores lost business, and I mean a lot of business, when the chains came to town. As a retail employee, I witnessed the cash/check/credit card dilemnia first hand. I worked my way through school. I have many personal and professional ties in the community. Therefore, declining my checks felt personal. As I noted, the shy man who I chat with at the counter is part of my community and it was very hurtful to imagine his reaction. Even if others don't, I still value those connections. In a rapidly growing place like Penn State, those connections mean a lot to a small town woman.

Professor positions are very hard to find, literature does not pay as well as some people seem to think, and like everyone else these days, my gas and heating bills limit my spending.

As for why I did not take cash the second time, I thought the first time was an aberration. Since I knew I had much more in the account than I was purchasing, I did not think twice about writing a check. Why should I kow-tow to some conglomerate? Frankly, they should be happy to kow-tow to me (not for the pittance I spend in their stores, but because I represent their average customer (I learned this as a retail grunt).

Actually, according to Certegy, it is the store manager that makes the final decision. Certegy makes the recommendation according to their specific profiling data. So, if you move, open a new account, have a low check start number this may be enough to flag the check. The store nor Certegy will not tell you why.

T.J. Maxx poor service!

I have been a Tjmaxx customer for the last 10 years and today I as was shopping with my mom and my 2 year old daughter, I picked a toy for my daughter which was a 10”x10” box that had a telephone toy that kept my daughter entertained while it gave us some time to shop. As I was walking mom to the fitting room to try the 10 outfits that she picked, the lady at the fitting room saw the toy and said “no accessories what so ever” so I explained to her that we’re keeping my 2 year old busy with it and we’ll be in the hall just outside the fitting room where my mom will be trying her outfits-my mom doesn’t speak any English and she needed me to be with her to help her and give her my opinion about the outfits she’s trying… the lady said “still no accessories”… I thought that was really rude and insensitive, what was the big deal…?

So before we left the store, I really wanted the manager to know about the incident because it really made me upset and I thought it could have been handled in a lot nicer way… I was just looking for some nice words to calm me down, instead the manager named K. Head said that her employee is one of the best and she did what she was supposed to do… my reply was that I was only trying to keep my daughter busy while we shop, it wouldn’t hurt to be more sensitive to your customer needs unless you don’t want us to come back here… the manager looked at me with no response… so I said I guess you don’t care either… again the manager said nothing and just looked at me…

It was a silly incident that shouldn’t have been a big deal… but it was poorly handle that I'll never come back to this place, and I’ll make sure to tell my friends and family about how unaccommodating and unfriendly tj maxx is to moms and their kids.

Sahar Arnaout.

Upon visiting the store, have noticed the female employees inappropriate attire. One employee had a very short dress on and when she bent over you could see her bottom (butt cheeks) not her under garments. Also noticed some employees wearing see thru tops so their colored bras show.

I bought a comforter just before closing last night. Upon rising this morning I placed the comforter on my bed. I immediately noticed a strong chemical odor from the comforter. I placed the comforter back in its package and returned it to the store. Upon arriving at the store the return clerk whispered to the other clerk and said what did you do to it? I said I did nothing to it as I only had it out of the bag to place it on my bed. She said she can't take anything back that was used. I said it wasn't used. Taking it out of the bag to place it on the bed isn't using it. Remember it was less than 12 hours since purchasing it! She smelt the comforter. She called her manager. She stated: " just this once they would take it back " What the Heck? I do not make many returns to stores. The store policy states a 30 day return policy with receipt. I asked to speak with the store manager Laura Lacey. I waited a few minutes for her to come speak with me. She did not come out. I told the clerks I would contact corporate headquaters with my complaint of poor service which I did. Corporate said they would contact the manager. I hope they get her and the store some training on good customer relations. I don't think in this uncertain economy any store can treat a customer loke this and stay in business. There are many other high end discount stores offering merchandise to put up with this kind of poor service. I will be shopping elsewhere. BUYER BEWARE should you ever want to return something to the TJ MAXX store in this western Wisconsin city. Sincerely, Dissatisfied Customer with six figure income

Are you sure it is not you who is two years old? Telling you no is not the same as being rude. Your daughter is going to grow up to be a spoiled brat because no one can tell her no and you don't think you have to follow the same rules as everyone else.

I advise everyone not to buy bedding from TJmaxx. There is nothing worse than taking a comforter set home,
pulling it out of the bag, and smelling [censor] all over it where someone has used it and returned it. Then upon returning it to the store because you do not want to smell someone else's butt on your cover, TJ Maxx's ignorant cashiers automatically assumes it was YOU who used it, and refuses to take it back.

Although I do agree that most people are good people I do have to say that over the last thirteen years at the three TJ Maxx stores I have worked for there have been so many "bad" returns and dishonest customers that it makes the stores look long and hard at customers
trying to return a comforter that is out of the packaging and "smells funny" It is such a shame that dishonest people are the reason that good and honest people like you have been given a hard time. I am sorry this happened to you and angry at all of those people out there that do try to scam us and make life harder for our loyal customers in the long run.

I work at TJ Maxx in Greenfield (or I used to, just transferred downtown.) I have witnessed that situation plenty of times while on register. The manager was probably doing straight up poor service. We have to take back everything, and if theres a stain sometimes..RARELY we wont accept it regardless of whatever is on it...its just we typically get a lot of scammers and bogus people that just want money back for something like a house bill or something and unwillingly gave it up and it was just disgusting.. .. i mean for gods sake we even return underwear! (although we usually zero it out, no one can trust a stranger with returned underwear!)

To the lady with the missing child. As you should know, yes, it may only take sixty seconds for a child to disappear, my question to you is why did you let your child out of your sight for sixty seconds. In additon, you cannot lock doors and refuse to let anyone to leave a public building, it is against the law and holding people against their will. However, Most TJ Maxx only have one exit and entrance at the front of the store, i f you were so certain your child had been kidnapped why did you not call the police and stand at the front door guarding it. TJ Maxx does use Code Adam, it directs them not to make PA announcements, but instead to send an associate to watch the front door and watch for the child WITH THE PARENT while the other associates check the store. Only the legal guardian can claim the child from someone trying to abduct the child since the TJ Maxx associate has no way of knowing you are the legal guardian, it could be a custody battle and a parent trying to kidnap the child from another.

Was the child found? YOu failed to mention if the child was actually kidnapped so I will have to assume you neglected your child and your child was not trained properly and wondered off into the store no doubt.

T.J. Maxx poor business practices

If you, like me, are one of the hundreds of thousands of people whose credit/debit card was breached and cancelled because of TJ Maxx's lack of security, then get mad.

Read the condescending letter from their CEO on the TJ Maxx website, and it may just provoke you to do some real complaining.

TJ Maxx has passed this serious matter off to banks to handle. Some banks are cancelling and reissuing cards and some are just saying to 'watch your account for activity'. Either way, someone other than TJ Maxx is paying for the situation. Reissuing credit/debit cards is costly for the banks especially when it numbers hundreds or thousands. We as customers will end up paying for it. TJ Maxx won't. NOT UNLESS, you boycott them.

I've set foot for the last time in any of their stores because I've learned the hard way that a discount store uses discount security measures.

Why shouldn't their stock suffer? Why shouldn't their sales suffer? Buying at TJ Maxx only condones the poor business practices that they adhere to day in and day out. The breach has gone on for months, and consumers are just now finding out, and some of us the hard way. TJ Maxx has offered nothing to effected customers other than their pitiful attempt at a letter on their website. Try phoning them. There are operators who will take your call, but the conversation is scripted and the ears deaf to your problems.

Do you want to do business with a company like that? I don't.
