My disabled daughter (she is autistic) just turned 18, and I purchased her a Netspend Prepaid Debit card to start learning more about finances. I loaded $20 with the purchase of the card and then another $150 via a MoneyPak when I got home. Part of this money was for the electric bill that had a disconnect notice. Before she had a chance to use the card at all, she was logged out of her account, and then when she tried to log back in it said they could not verify her identity and to call the 800 number. We called and were asked for a driver's license or state ID. My daughter doesn't have either as she just turned 18 and due to her disability, she does not drive, so no identification. We sent over her birth certificate, ss card, utility bill proving address and were told it wasn't good enough. I sent over my DL and ss card asking them to put me on the card as I could be verified. They refused. I finally took my daughter over to the BMV to get an ID. When we got home, I took a picture of the temporary identification document that you receive here in Ohio when you apply for an ID until your physical ID card arrives. I was told that this was still not good enough. Now we have no electricity and are no closer to resolution. This seems like it should be against the law. I mean, the money that was put on the card was cash, no check deposits or anything like that, and the card wasn't even used once before they pulled this and locked up the ability to access the funds on the card. We have no money on our food card, no electricity, and no access to our money. Very bad practices!
Claimed loss: $170
Desired outcome: I want the account unlocked so that we can withdraw the money from the card and wash our hands of Netspend and their unfair practices. They don't care about their customers at all. Very inhumane.
