We moved into a new house in a different city in August of 2025 because the power bill (with Georgia Power) at our old home was $500 a month and completely unaffordable. We fell behind on payments from the old house and had to move before we could pay those off.
We started service at our new house - the average bill at our new house is only $180. After two months in our new home, Georgia Power combined the bills from our old home, saying we had to pay $1400 or have the power in our new home cut off. They gave me 48 hours and said the only way to save our power in our new home was to go on pre-pay. So we went on pre-pay, but the payments kept getting higher and higher every day, making it impossible to keep up and doubling our total monthly payments in our new home, getting it close to the $500 a month mark again, in a home where the power is only $180/month.
So, my partner and I joined forces to pay the $1200 we then had left of back payments to finally get caught back up with Georgia Power. When we made that payment, we got on the phone with Georgia Power to make sure that our payment of $1200 would go to the balance we owed and not the 25%/75% split that the pre-pay plan does. They told us that yes, it would pay off our balance and that we had to have an additional 5 days of pre-pay in our account so that within 5 days, we would be switched back to a regular service plan. We added a cushion of an additional 7 days of pre-pay to make sure we were good.
They also did a credit check to see if we needed to pay the additional $350 to return to a regular service, but after they checked, they said it was not needed and to wait the 5 business days to be put back on a regular plan. I waited the five days and we were still not switched over and none of our back pay (besides the 25%) has been applied. I called back and was told to wait an additional three days. I waited an additional three days and was promised it would be applied, but it was not.
I called back again and they said that no ticket had ever been put in for us to be switched back over and that now we had to pay an additional $545 to Georgia Power to put us back on a regular plan. If we have to keep going this way, we'll have to pay thousands of dollars to pay off the now $918 in back pay we still owe Georgia Power, even though we already made a payment to pay our balance off. They refuse to apply it to the back pay unless we make an arbitrary $545 additional dollars to the company, not for any power we've used but just because they said so. I don't know how this company is still alive, honestly.
They have no idea who they messed with. We are being responsible consumers trying to get back on track with Georgia Power and they keep making up additional payments and every single employee that I speak to has given us different information, making it literally impossible to catch up on our power payments. By the end of this, they are going to deeply regret how they have screwed us.
Everyone should know how incredibly corrupt this company is. It's sickening.
Claimed loss: $1200
Desired outcome: wipe all back pay and put us on a regular payment plan without adding any additional payments to line the pockets of the company.
