My good friend’s mom passed away last Sunday, so I wanted to send my friend flowers. I placed the order on Tuesday, when I knew what would be a good type of flowers to order. At first, they pretended that they were trying to verify who they would be delivering to. Then, I shared a link to the funeral announcement and my friend’s contact number, so they would have no excuse to pretend they do not know where to deliver and who to contact. They clearly have some trouble writing in English, but it appeared that they got the address and time.
When it was halfway through the funeral (3 pm ET on Sunday), I contacted them about the delivery, because the flowers were supposed to arrive at noon. When I finally managed to speak to a human, they told me very confidently that due to an unexpected volume of orders, there will be some delay, but I should wait for the delivery to arrive later. This was a clear lie, they had the order in their system already for quite some time, and there was no evidence that anything was on its way to my friend’s mom’s funeral.
When I checked the building there they claim to be located, "200 North LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL 60601”, in Google Maps, Proflowers were not there. I wonder who is their legal representative in the US as of now.
To confirm that they do not respect American consumer laws, the telephonist tried to negotiate the refund. At first, she said that they would give me 30% back. Then, I said that this was a fraud. She said that they would be giving me 50% back. Then, I said that it is clearly a fraud, and I will be reporting this to a government agency, and hung up. I feel terrible also for the woman at the proflowers.com call center who is working at 2 am of her local time to scam people.
After I hung up, she called me back, saying that they would be giving me a full refund, and that it would appear on my account within 3-5 business days.
Still, they seem to be using the RYUK framework (target people who are in distress and willing to share information that would be helpful, e.g. phone numbers, credit card numbers, CVV, address, etc). I will need to change my credit card now, because they could use my credit card for other purchases.
Claimed loss: $216.74
Desired outcome: Deactivate this website (https://www.proflowers.com/). I’m not sure how many people who ordered ever received anything. It’s just exposing our data to 3rd world cybercriminals.
