Stopped here (Chattanooga, TN; Ringold Rd) because fuel was cheaper and regretted attempting to use the restroom. The restroom location is tucked in the back, outside the view of the counter. The door was locked when I walked in the hallway and there was no signage, so I patiently stood outside the restroom for five or more minutes waiting. One customer left, instead of waiting. When I knocked on the door, there was no response, so I went to the counter with a customer that walked in and confirmed his experience in that store is that the restrooms were not normally locked. The gentleman behind the counter seemed to confirm that they locked the restrooms on purpose. Three women were waiting when I walked back, so I let them in the women’s restroom (apparently locked as well). Inside the men’s, there are two urinales and a toilet. I was surprised it would be locked, since it was setup for use by multiple customers at the same time. I noticed the handle on the entry door did not have an external, manual locking/unlocking mechanism. The installed handle would always be locked when the door closed, often used for closets storing cleaning products. I propped the door open before exiting the restrooms and let the gentleman employee know I was returning the keys and he asked me to put them on the counter. I suggested he post a sign to let customers know to grab the key if the restrooms are locked. He said he normally tells customers when he sees them waiting, and I explained I was back there waiting for a while. I then heard an aggressive, “How are we supposed to know, sir!?” I was caught off guard by the tone, and commented that she would not have to “know” a customer is waiting if they post a sign. I expect this is not the first time a customer has been in this situation and she has engaged with him/her, because she began explaining that customers are the one locking the doors. As I attempted to suggest installing handles appropriate for a public restroom, she interrupted me multiple times, blaming customers for removing the blocks that were used to prop open the doors. I then started to comment that a woman may not want a door propped open where someone could see part of the restroom from outside the door, and the woman continued to interrupt me, arguing that customers are the problem, proving to me that she has no desire to improve the situation. I told her I hope she has a great day and I stopped wasting my time. I hope she is not the owner and someone with a desire to improve the store reads this review, choosing one or both easy solutions: install a sign and/or replace the door handle.
