Hertz is a rare visitor on ComplaintsBoard, so the pace of resolving complaints leaves much to be desired. We believe they should spend more time and effort on reviews to naturally grow customer loyalty. As for reviewers, we'd advise carefully reading existing reviews to understand what to expect. It's also helpful to go through the few complaints that Hertz has already resolved to get a clear picture of their customer interaction and potential challenges in resolving your personal issue.

Hertz rental car in oslo, norway

When my wife and I picked up our Hertz rental car in Oslo on July 31st we noted that it was dirty. In the U.S., when we pick up a rental car, we are used to having it clean and washed. Since the car was dirty, it was a little difficult noting all the scratches in the paint. Also, the car was in an underground parking area where the light was not good.

When we inspected the car with a Hertz attendant, my wife noted stains on the seats. We brought this to the attention of the attendant and he told us “…not to worry about it.” The stains were not noted on the inspection form that had damage to the car from previous renters noted on it. There was one obvious reddish stain and very noticeable, just like in the photos provided to us in your e-mail. There were other not-so-obvious stains. Here again, I have never rented a car in the U.S. that had such stained upholstery. We certainly did not stain it.

We also purchased all the additional insurance Hertz offered: PLUS Insurance and Super Insurance.
Also, we dropped the car off at the Oslo Airport at 5:00 am on August 4th because we had an early flight. There was no one at the Hertz facility at the airport to discuss the alleged damage. We were at the mercy of what the Hertz personnel decided what the damage was with no input from us.

This seems like a scam to me to squeeze additional money out of your customers. Hertz, a large rental car corporation seems to be abusing its customers. I can’t imagine the Hertz Corporation would allow this sort of poor customer relations to continue if it knew about them. I certainly will stay away from renting from Hertz in the future.

I find the Hertz Europe rental car operation very unprofessional. I am surprised that the Hertz Corporation allows this substandard (as compared to the U.S.) operation to continue.

Hertz jim smith hertz staff not professional and the company can't be trusted.

Bad Service: I wrote below to let aussies know how bad North Gosford Hertz service was.Dont rent any car from them, as the staff not professional and the company can’t be trusted.

I rented a 3 tone Truck from above North Gosford Australia on 1 Aug 7:30, and we need this truck for Saturday only, Mary who is the Hertz staff serviced me, I checked with her if we can returned the key after hours, I had been told they don’t have return letter box for after hour key return, and they asked us to return the key on next day(2nd Aug Sunday), she also told us if we return the key before mid-day on Sunday, that won’t have extra cost, unless the truck is damaged by accident and forget refill the petrol.

She didn’t mentioned extra day charge if we returned the truck after 7:30AM. We have rented a truck previously from hertz @ Arncliffe, which had an afterhours key return, so we thought it odd that this same facility wasn’t available at Gosford.

I returned the key after 9AM Sunday, Mary said its all good and unless the petrol’s low there’s no extra charge, I see this wasn’t the case once seeing my credit card statement, I realize they charged me 2 days.

I tried to explain what Mary told me, and they mentioned every condition is on the statement, they won’t give me refund. I used to rent car with Hertz all the time, I don’t have any issues like this, but after this bad experience, I will tell everyone not to consider rent any vehicle by Hertz, as the staff not professional and the company can’t be trusted.

Hertz liars and fairy tales

I was in philadelphia this last weekend and rented a car from your potshocken, philadelphia location near germantown pike. I rented it saturday 7 / 26 / 15 and returned it sunday night (7 / 27 / 15) around 9pm. When i get back to my hometown of detroit i am appalled at an extra $75 charge to my debit card due to an “interior cleaning” i call the rental location and speak with someone named tj. So i ask him about this issue he says, “ someone left the passenger backseat window down and it rained all night and messed up the sitting. I had to get it cleaned and it is still sitting in my parking lot not rented out due to this issue. ”
1. It did not rain sunday night in philadelphia because i was there until tuesday morning.
2. No one was driving that car but me, no one else sat in that car but me so i know darn well i did not leave a window down because i used a / c continuously. Even in my own car.
By this time me and tj are going back and forth, i get very loud and angry with tj because now he’s saying to me it’s all my fault he cannot rent the car out, so then he hangs up the phone on me. That was the worst customer service i have experienced and i had to call you billing support department just to complain and all i get is a 10% discount? That is absolutely ridiculous. I will never use hertz ever again and i will not refer any of my family or friends to you all. I will refer them to your competition without a doubt. Your company does not stand for intergrity and honesty like you all claim. Tj is suppose to be your area manager and he hangs up on people when the pressure gets too hot for him? And he’s a liar as well. He claims he inspected my car and that’s what he found but that is a lie and i cannot believe you all would allow managers to just lie just to meet your end of the month quotas.
In conclusion, like i mentioned i won’t be dealing with you all ever again and i hope others see you for the horrible company you are.

Hertz overcharge

We have traveled to Europe 20 times over the past 18 years and each time we rent or lease a vehicle through Auto Europe or Europe by Car. On this trip to Spain we rented from Hertz through Priceline over the internet. Our rental was to picked up at the Hotel Hesperia Del Mar in Barcelona for 7 days and the cost was to be 151 Euros, including tax. The car delivered to us was a mini, mini something and would not even accommodate our two suitcases, so we agreed to the extra 140 Euros for a larger model. This would have brought the total coast to 291 Euros for the 7 days. In haste, failing due diligence, I signed the contract without reviewing and when we reached Montserrat, I read same and learned that we had been charged 630.93 Euros for the 7 days. A call to Priceline's customer service number produced nothing. We finally returned the vehicle to the hotel where we rented it and I confronted the young woman, Ester, who represents Hertz and had written our contract. When I demanded that she rewrite the contract per the original agreement, she refused in a hostile way and stated that I should call a number that she would provide. I refused and told her that I would stand here all day, if necessary, until she made it right. There were a number of customers behind me, so she made a phone call, following which she angrily
rewrote the contract per original agreement. I blame myself for failing to carefully read the contract and for renting from Hertz through Priceline. I'm finished with both of them.

Hertz extra charging sharp practice

I inquired about snow chain availability at Chambery Airport and was told, incorrectly, that they were not available. However, Hertz advised that the car was fitted with snow tyres. At no point was this requested, or a price quoted and yet £112 was added to my invoice, without my knowledge. Despite an email chain that confirmed this, they have refused to credit the account.

Hertz excessive toll charge and tire charge

The car had a cracked windshield and hail damage. I used the toll road to leave the airport and to return. They charged me almost $6 a day just to have the toll transponder which came with the car. I had to pay $38.55 for tolls that should have been less than $10. In addition they charged me $74 for a new tire. I will never use Hertz again. I complained via telephone and got no where. Beware!a

Hertz upcharges

Going through reservation details with counter agent at airport. Every time he asked if we wanted an upgrade, insurance, etc. I answered that we didn't want any add-ons. We made our reservation through a travel website and I explained that I only wanted what we had already paid for. When we returned home, I noticed on our credit card that we were charged $134 from Hertz. Turns out it was for a Loss Damage Fee. When I called (twice) to have the charges removed, all the customer service agents could say was "it is on the contract". I guess you can't trust the rental agent to set up the reservation as you are requesting. Sounds like he probably gets a commission on these fees, knowing that I won't be able to get it refunded. They offered me a $30 voucher! Believe me, I won't be using it!

Hertz overbilling

I rented a car from Hertz, SF for 5 days. When I returned the car to Hertz's location at SF airport on the contracted date, the cars were "flowing in". The Hertz employee called out that if you didn't need a receipt to leave the keys in the car which I did.
When I received my credit card, Hertz had billed me an additional $454 indicating that I had returned the car 8 days late! This of course was impossible as I had flown out of SF three hours after I left the car at their location on the contracted return date.
I am waiting for Hertz to try to confirm the correct facts and refund my money. But to get to this point, I have been on the phone with Hertz for hours, first to their location in Manila who could not find my contract in their computers, then for hours to their locations in the USA.
Bottom line, watch your credit card charges from HERTZ.

Hertz hertz car rental

Last week my wife (Mina Keller) and I decided to travel by plane to Portland from GEG. Upon our 45-minute plane trip we were elated that we took the 45-minute flight (winds behind us) instead of driving for 6 hours. Our intended destination was Eugene, Oregon the USTFA National Championships held at the U of Oregon. After taking that short flight we went down to luggage and found that low and behold our luggage was available...wooo not like most airports. After proceeding over to the airport on site location for rental cars we walked by the Hertz Honored Gold Plus Rewards office only to find out that my enrollment meant nothing since it was not operating w/ sign said "closed". We went around the corner of the lobby to find 15+ customers being waited on by two (2) counter attendees. Not good! It took us 1.5 hours to get our vehicle...twice as long as it took to fly there. After telling the parking garage attendant we learned that Hertz has cut back drastically on their assistance. "No kidding"! Turning the car in after our three-day trip was a breeze in that everything was automated. I am going to go out of my way to let others know that they should avoid Hertz...at least in Portland, Oregon. Contract with anyone else but them. I plan on going to www.Compaints.com and let people know that not only has Hertz Stock prices plummeted ….by so has my business with them. Everyone should consider the same.

Hertz gas charge

Very bad experience. They didn't have the SUV I reserved days before, and I was downgraded to a smaller car without tech stuff (no USBs, no back camera, etc), cheaper but not what I asked. Then they charge me the gas, and can't get a refund.

Hertz extra charged

Last week we rented a car from the hertz office on Sanford airport in Orlando. We made a rate for renting the car for 5 days. When we were finished the rep from Hertz asked if the other guys also wanted to drive the car. We said no because that will cost us extra. He said too us that there would be no extra charges from that. Too be sure we asked what the total amount of the rrental would be. He said round the $600, -, when we returned the car we had to pay $891, -, because they charged $270, - for the extra drivers.
We said to the guy who took the car that it was not fair. He said he could not do anything about it. We had to email the next day with the manager. After a lot of mails and phone calls they would not give us back the $270, - I will never rent a car with hertz again.

Hertz inexcusable pick-up delays

While I was very pleased with the rental vehicle I would never use Hertz again for a car rental. I reserved the car online at the Hertz website for 8:30am in the morning and requested to be picked up in Meriden, CT. At 8:15am I phoned the rental location in Wallingford, CT to ask when I could expect to be picked up. I was told that all personnel were outside moving cars around and that someone would call me right back. At 8:30am I called again to ask when the pick-up would be and was told that someone would call me shortly. At 8:45am I called again to ask when I would be picked up and was told that a text message was sent to all personnel and I should expect a call shortly. At 9:00am I call yet again only to be told again that no one was available at that moment. I then called a friend and asked him to give me a ride to the Hertz location. My friend picked me up at 9:30am and drove me to the Hertz location. We arrived at 9:50am and I completed the required paperwork by 10:15am. The staff was very apologetic but at that point it was too late. I still had to drive home and pack the car before my 800 mile trip to Spartanburg, South Carolina. I did not leave my house until 11am – 2 ½ hours after my reservation time.

There was a death in my family and my car would never make the trip so that it why I decided to rent a car. What the staff did at the Hertz location in Wallingford, CT is inexcusable. If I reserve a car for 8:30am I should be picked up early enough so that I can complete the required paperwork and be driving off of the lot at 8:30am in the rental car. I had hotel reservations that I had to change and had to call my father to let him know that I would be 2 ½ hours late picking him up. I would never rent a car from Hertz again and would strongly discourage others from doing so. I chose Hertz because the prices were the lowest but I guess you get what you pay for. Hertz s me an email asking about my car rental experience with them but when I tried to send my complaint to them it was returned due to a delivery failure. How convenient!

Hertz bad service/unauthorized hold

On 4/17/2015, I rented a car from the Westbrook Maine location. This is a corporate location. Upon picking up my rental, I secured the hold using a credit card. My rental was for the time period 4/17-4/27/2015. The cost of the rental was $222.00. Like most rental car companies, you must present a credit card to secure the cost of the rental as well as additional fees. In this case, it was $223.00. When I returned the vehicle, I paid for the cost of the rental with a debit card. The cost of the rental processed through my checking account on 4/28/2015. The hold was removed from my CREDIT CARD shortly thereafter. BUT WAIT, there is more! Upon checking my bank account on 5/5/15, HERTZ placed a hold on my checking account for $223.00. Why would they do that since the costs had already been deducted a week prior? I called the rental station in Westbrook and of course, they “Are not aware of the unauthorized hold” and I am told it is my bank. My bank put holds on accounts for Hertz now? I visited my bank and they tell me that the hold comes from Hertz Rental Systems and they kindly provided me with a screen shot that shows the hold was placed by Hertz. I than call the Hertz billing office and of course after being placed on hold for almost 20 minutes, they too can’t explain this mysterious hold on my account. (It is also important to note, the rep was able to locate my rental by my license number, dates of rental and my full name. This comes up later)
“Oh no, we don’t see any hold placed on your account, it must be your bank”. What great service Hertz provides! I finally was able to speak to a rep who said he would contact my bank and send them a fax to release the hold. (If they didn’t put the hold on in the first place, how would they remove it?). Although I appreciated the reps effort, three days later, it is still not resolved. I called the Customer Billing office (of course again waiting on hold for excessive time….) I reached “Whitney”. Because I did not have my rental number, I asked her to look up my rental in the same manner as the previous rep. This girl was as useless as an Ice Cream Cone in Phoenix in July! The fact that she would not at least look this account up using what information I could provide, plus the extended wait times, plus the run around I have already gotten just fueled my anger even more. I explained to her the frustration I was feeling at the whole experience and that I was not happy that they had place this unauthorized hold. (Remember, the hold was on a CREDIT CARD at the time of rental NOT my debit card that I used to PAY for it). I asked Whitney to provide the name an address of the location to send a bill to for bank expense incurred as a result of their hold. She rudely said “Customer Service”. To which I responded, If I just write “Customer Service” on an envelope and put it in the mail, it will get to them. She again, rudely provided an address. I explained to Whitney the lengthy process and poor service I had experienced and would not only never be a repeat customer but would also encourage other to avoid Hertz as well. I asked her if she would feel the same way if she were in my situation. Her response “My opinion isn’t relevant”. Clearly, Whitney lacks empathy. While I did come across stern and perhaps a bit ride at this point, I feel it was appropriate. I am the customer, they made the error and I don’t deserve to be on hold for extended times because they are too cheap to staff appropriately. With that said, the “hold” is still on the account, Whitney is an idiot and I would rather walk than ever deal with Hertz again.

Don't book cars through Hotels.Com. I booked a Hertz car for one day for San Jose Costa Rica and with the estimated taxes added on, the amount was supposed to be about $15. When I got to the rental counter, they added on a bunch of charges and the bill was going to be over $50. Then they wanted to put $1200 on my credit card as a deposit on the car. I cancelled the car and took a taxi.

Returned my rental car two weeks ago. Hertz has still not released my deposit. They are blaming debit card bank. I have never had any problems with the return of a deposit from other car rental companies. The bank has the deposit as pending. I called hertz and got a run around and an attitude.

Hertz formal complaint

On 2/10/2015 I went to return a car at Herts located at 8041 north 76th st in Milwaukee WI and upon arriving I was advised charges about a tire I supposed to damaged.I asked for proof of tire and damage, i aked for verification of the firestone reciept and also i asked for the general manager information and was refused that too. I then walked out to call the police however I was told by the dispather that it was civil suit an officer wouldn't be able to respond the dispathcer didn't understand nor cared. I called to the 800 number for hertz and let them know i was being refused information regarding the overcharges for damages. Not only did they slander my name, they lied and threaten me to the point my witness told him to calm down you don't have to handle her like a man. They did not treat me as a valued customer. Andrew yelled at me after refusing the things i asked for, turned extremely red in the face and told me that he was going to call the police. I recieved a disorderly conduct ticket in the mail which is causing me my freedom. I would like to see fourth that this employee shold be terminated for threating me, lying, and verbally abusing me. Their actions were inappropriate but yet I still was refuned for gas and tire damages but I still have to fight this ticket when I was the one victimized. Thank you for taking time to review this matter I would like to hear back from Hertz corporation as soon as possible. I can also be reached via email at candice.[protected]@gmail.com.

Hertz charge more than signed

Srs. I rented a car manual transmission, 2 door, small and cheap car on March 19th 2015 and paid into my credit card 5491*****7444 the amount of USD 102, 63 for one day rental. I took the car in Milan Linate Airport at 12:12 on April 12th/2015 and delivered the car at Venice (Venezia) Marco Polo airport at 15:33 on April 13th. I am aware that I delivered the car some hours (maybe 3 hours more) after the time but they still charge me more EURO 178, 50 - USD: 193, 12. So, I am complaining about the total amount of charge USD 295, 75 for one day rent car small. I would like the refund of the EURO 178, 50.

Hertz poor service

Intermediate car reserved: I asked at desk for Coupe as I am 6'2" and a two door allows me more front seat room, I was told no problem and when I went out found I had been assigned a 4 door. The car was filthy on outside, had 43K miles and had multiple, and I mean multiple dents and some scratches. I have seen better vehicles at Rent a Wreck. There was no parking lot attendant, only one person at this location. I took a lot of pictures, filled out form and then found the box for forms hadn't been emptied in months, was so full I couldn't stuff the form into it (took pics of that also). Tried calling Cust. service people, was told I had to wait until I returned the car to do anything. Basically, no Cust. service to speak of, no interest in issues when I did call again, no interest in location of making customer happy or in doing their jobs.

Hertz unjustified charges

Well, the saga continues! Not only have I not received any responses or resolutions from Hertz with regards to the charging of over $500.00, they are now applying more charges to my parents credit card! There is now 2 more charges each in the amount of 92.40 EURO...no explanations provided! This clearly is a scam on behalf of Hertz Italiana and I will not give up until I have every penny back from them! So far, now 7 months after the trip has been completed, we have been charged $65, $262, $176, $285...what is wrong with this picture everyone!?

Hertz over charged

Hertz car rental over charged me $150.00 on my car rental! Trying to fight the charges have been relentless! The car was wonderful, service was fantastic at first of course, then to my shock, looking at my banking statement, I was overcharged 150.00" after talking to several reps, which they each gave me a different excuse, they would only credit me 50.00. I was lived to say the least. The salesman I need to talk to went on vacation while I was gone, and I can. Not get a hold of him, I was told nothing can be done until I talk to him! Do not rent a vehicle from this company as they are rip off Artists!

Hertz horrible service & overcharged

We needed a rental vehicle because we were in a car accident out of town. The only rental place in the area was Hertz. We made our reservation online. They were going to pick us up at the hotel and take us to the rental place. They took hours, and hours, and hours. We kept calling and asking when they were going to show, and they kept pushing us back, and back, and back again. They finally appeared and took us to the rental office. When we got there, they didn't have car we reserved. They gave us a larger car because that was all they had. We had a long drive ahead of us, and this resulted in much higher gas expenses. However, I was told there was nothing they could do to compensate us. We didn't have any car trouble on the way home (it was clean and functional), but there was already a crack in the window when we got it from the rental office. We take to the airport return rental office the day it was due back. I was due at 1:30pm that day, and we returned it around 9am. We waited for an extended period of time so we could return it to a person, but no one showed up. We ended up depositing it into the drop box. We were not billed for several days. When we were we noticed there was an extra $90 charge. I contacted them about the discrepancy, and I was told that the extra charge appeared because they didn't check the drop box until after the time when my car was due back, so they billed me for an extra day at the larger vehicle rate! I drove up there to address the issue. The attendant insisted she was unable to help me fix the issues. I asked to talk to the manager; he was unavailable and would call me back, except he never did. I called again, and I still have never been called back. If there is any other choice, I will never use this company again!
