I am writing to report an incident on board Caribbean Airlines flight BW 269 on the 9th March 2026
I want to start from a position that I have no difficulty with the in-flight Crew and/or the captain reprimanding me for not immediately turning off my phone and/or turning my phone to airplane mode, when the announcement was made to so do. if either of those parties found that at the material time I failed or refused to do so, the in-flight team was certainly at liberty to bring the same to my attention and address it.
What I do take issue with is HOW the in-flight team handled a dispute that arose between myself and another passenger. Prior to take off, I was poked by a fellow passenger who purported to aggressively indicated to me to GET OFF MY PHONE. I indicated to the passenger that he was not permitted to touch a fellow passenger, under any circumstances and that there was a clear a clear procedure to report his concerns, if he wished to. He poked me a second time and again shouted, GET OFF YOUR PHONE. I repeated to him, that he is to refrain from putting his hands on me. He then proceeded to put his hand in my face and then pressed the Flight Attendant call button. This all took place in St Kitts. The call button remained pressed and neither of the flight attendants on board came to see what concern there was, which resulted in the button being pressed.
When we landed in Antigua, I signaled to the junior Flight Attendant, Isaiah as he journeyed from the front to he back of the plane, that I wished to be relocated since I did not feel comfortable remaining seated next to the fellow passenger. He then proceeded to call the Senior Flight Attendant, Sherona [I believe] from the rear of the plane, who approached having already been told a particular version of events.
In spite of the fact that neither flight attendant responded to the call for assistance over 20 minutes and more so, that they approached solely on my request to be relocated, I was at a loss as to the aggression with which the female flight attendant approached. She proceeded to inquired whether I was on my phone during taxi or take off and added that she head a phone right when she was giving the announcement and for that reason, she repeated the announcement. I was very clear to her that she was not at liberty to question me, having approached clearly partial to the version of events that she received and more so, having not responded to the call for intervention when the issue that formed the subject of the dispute, was live. She issued an apology for failing to respond to the call for in flight assistance but repeated her question of whether I was on my phone. I indicated to her that that was not possible after take-off as I would have lost service. She repeated her question and I indicated that we had not yet taxied and if we did, service would have dropped. She proceeded to indicate that after she gave the announcement, she heard someone’s phone ring, which presumably was mine. In response, the passenger referred to me as an f-ing lying [censored] in the presence of both in flight crew members and fellow passengers. I recall the male flight attendant, Isaiah indicating forthwith to the fellow passenger that he was not at liberty to use profanities whilst on board.
The fellow passenger was permitted to hurl profanities at me, with no consequence or reprimand.
Additionally, I took grave issue with the female flight attendant’s sole focus on whether I was on my phone, which was immaterial to being poked and/or having expletives being hurled at me. What I found especially disappointing was her response.
Eventually the passenger was relocated to a few seats ahead and the female flight attendant checked in to see if he was okay.
The First Officer then approached a few minutes later and reminded that phones are to be placed in airplane mode for taxi, take off and landing. Again, the substantive issue was no longer live at the time and all parties appeared to focus on whether I had breached the airplane mode policy and was entirely silent on the trespass to person and/or profanities hurled at a fellow passenger.
For the avoidance of doubt, I take no issue with the in flight team reprimanding me if they found that I was on my phone. What I do take issue with is the manner in which the dispute was handled.
• A passenger, under no circumstances, is permitted to police the actions of another passenger. That is precisely what the in-flight team is for.
• Having called the inflight team and them having not responded for 20 minutes, they then intervened in what appears as a partial representation of the matter was unacceptable.
• Permitting one passenger to hurl profanities at another passenger was wholly unacceptable.
• Permitting a passenger who hurled profanities to remain on board and more so, to inquire whether that passenger was go and not the one against whom the profanities were hurled, is also unacceptable.
• Proceeding to caution one passenger and not the passenger who hurled profanities, is unacceptable.
I am not aware that the captain cautioned the passenger for hurling profanities on board. I am only aware that I was reprimanded for what appeared to be the version of events presented to the inflight team, unilaterally by a passenger, AFTER I requested intervention by them.
• I am a frequent flyer of Caribbean Airlines
• The attitude of the female flight attendant, who underscored that she was senior to the male flight attendant was astonishing. She failed and/or refused to a request for assistance for over 20 minutes. After having been brought to the dispute by me, she appears partial to the other party. She then overlooks and/or permitted one party to hurl profanities at another and at no material time did she reprimand that passenger.
I did indicate to the team that I would be penning my disappointment, not for the incident that took place but for Caribbean Airlines to address the manner in which its team deals with disputes.
What appeared even more alarming to me, is that at 6:22 the female flight attendant passed my seat at 13 to inquire of the relocated passenger whether he was ok. At no time was I asked whether I was ok, having been verbally assaulted and permitted to so do by the flight attendants.
I am almost inclined to believe that the partiality had everything to do with race.
My dispute has to do with the following
1. A dispute arose between 2 passengers, and one passenger pressed the in-flight button for assistance and intervention by the in-flight team. No team members ever responded to the request for assistance by way of the button.
2. Some 20+ minutes after, when the flight landed in Antigua, I signalled to and stopped what was later confirmed to be the junior [male] flight attendant, and asked to be relocated since there was a dispute and I no longer wished to be seated next to the said passenger
3. Having been the passenger who finally got the attention of the in-flight team and who sought to ensure the situation did not escalate further by offering to move seats, I was approached by the senior flight attendant who appears to have been instructed by the fellow passenger inquiring of the matters which occurred over 20 minutes prior and who later permitted the said passenger to verbally assault another by calling them a “f-ing [censored]”
4. The First Officer was also briefed and at no time was the issue of the unattended call addressed or the profanities hurled, but solely the issue of whether my phone was placed in airplane mode previously.
5. The flight attendant, clearly partial to the situation, approached with aggression and at no time thereafter enquired whether I, who had had expletives hurled at me, was okay
