Dear Sens. Bennet and Udall: You are my elected representatives in the Senate. I am writing to inform you of a problem I’m having with my financial institution, U.S. Bank, 950 17th St., Denver, CO 80202. I have instructed my bank to “reject all” payments from my checking account that would cause my account to go into the negative. Despite my...
Read full review of US Bankfrivolous overdraft fees
I signed up for the program they were offering that automatically transferred $25 from Checking to savings each month. After realizing that they hold checks for way too long and going out of town for 10 days and getting hit with hundreds of dollars of overdraft fees, I decided to take my business to Chase. I kept my US Bank account open however, and left $15 in checking. July 1st came along and US Bank took it upon themselves to continue the savings transfer program even though I didn't have $25 in my checking account. They overdrafted my checking account and transferred $25 into my savings account. They then charged me a $25 negative balance fee. The kicker is that the month before they apparently did something different with the transfer and my savings account ended up being -$25, so the $25 that they transferred over just went to pay the negative balance that they created the month before. US BANK IS DETERMINED TO STEAL THE MONEY OUT OF YOUR ACCOUNT AS FAST AS THEY CAN! Read all the other posts that say the very same thing. When you question them on the wisdom of overdrawing a checking account just to transfer money to savings, they reply with a smug letter explaining how hard they work to meet stringent quality standards and exceed customer expectations. Horrible company...even by banking standards.

unwarranted nsf fees
I made an ATM deposit and withdrawal at 11:45pm on the 28th, but says posting on 29th of June, . Before I left, I looked online and saw that transactions that I had made on the 26th but posting on the 28th had cleared, nothing pending and still had money in bank. The next day, there were 3 overdraft fees and question marks beside the previous transactions. There was nothing negative until after the NSF's. The following day two more NSF fees. I went to branch and although the employee agreed with me, the manager said that she would not reverse them and stated that they affected the other transactions even though I had enough money to cover them. States that they held $50 of my deposit until following day. I was told that a deposit made in ATM was not posted until next day and also told that the deposit for $150 only gave me access to $100 until it posted. Seems like the computer had it right but the employees made it logical for the NSF's. How can a transaction that happened a day after everything posted affect the account when it wasn't negative? I could understand the last two but nothing before that. I'm an Inventory Controller and numbers person, there is no logical explanation for what I am looking at and have also printed for proof. They have taken $187.50 out, making me short on my rent. I have been a customer of US Bank for 7 years and have caught them in so many errors that I watch my account daily. This is bad business to say the least! I also called their 1-800 USBANKS number today and was treated rudely and told that there was no way that I could dispute this action. Are they right or can you help me?
two unrelated experiences in recent weeks show the bank has no problem exploiting their customers for fees
US Bank SUCKS! Two unrelated experiences in recent weeks show the bank has no problem exploiting their customers for fees. The latest one involves my daughter where a US Bank teller deposited funds into the wrong account (we specifically asked for money to go into the account tied to her debit card). We informed our daughter of the deposit we made and, based on that information, she subsequently used her debit card which over drew the account. I consider US Bank’s actions particularly egregious in two areas. First, the bank refuses to accept any responsibility for the teller’s error. Second, the bank allowed repeated debit card use for several consecutive (seven) days, rather than declining the transactions. The entire time the account had a negative balance, made all that much worse by exaggerated overdraft and negative balance fees. After some investigation, this appears to be common practice for branches on or near college campuses (my daughter is a student at SDSU). I consider these actions to be unethical and borderline criminal. I will never conduct any type of business with US Bank again and will take every opportunity to share my displeasure regarding US Bank to anybody who will listen.
First...if the teller put it in the incorrect account, you should contact the manager at the branch. If you did and did not get anywhere call the 24 hr customer service. If the banker is unwilling to help get a manager with the call center involved.
Yes, proving which account it should go in can be difficult, but did you write the account number on the receipt? If so, they have copies that can prove what account it should go in, which will prove they put it in the incorrect account and get all fees reversed.
I recently opened a business account with U.S. Bank and acquired a merchant account through them as well. They mislead me as to how the merchant account worked and when a customer requested a reversal the bank locked my accounts without notification, they won't return my calls and are currently holding $13, 000 dollars over a $500 reversal of which I have written authorization for. Now I have checks bouncing and the person responsible for the account being blocked won't return calls. U.S. Bank blows...DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!
First off, after making a deposit in any account you should check to see that the money has been made available for withdrawal from the account it was placed in.
Secondly, I do agree the bank should reverse the charges since a bank debit card was used, there should have been no approval of the transactions.
Third, I also agree the bank should have put a hold on the account when the first one was not covered but it still fall upon the account holder to make sure there are funds available before using the account funds.
fees fees fees
Where do I start?
First off I was with Cal National Bank before they were taken over by US Bank, and I will state that I had never had the problems nor the fees charged to any of my accounts with any bank than at US Bank. Thats saying a lot considering I use to bank with Washington Mutual before Cal National and they were horrible.
When US Bank First started to continue the business of Cal National Bank I asked my the service rep. at my branch if the account that I previously had with
Cal National was going to remain the same as the current account at US Bank, considering that bank policies vary between institutions? The Rep. said that the account is the same and would be handled the same. This is to say the least was a lie to keep my business. In the past four weeks I have had checks bounce (the first time in my life) outrageous overdraft and Non sufficient funds charges, all with out my account actually being in the negative. yes they charge overdraft fees on account activities that have not yet hit your account. so wile a pending transaction means funds have not yet been released they already charged your account the overdraft fee. Some say that is standard practice but every time a Pending transaction made my account negative, I would transfer funds from a savings to the negative account before the pending transactions were released therefore my actual account balance never hitting a negative marker.
If this isn't enough when you try to talk to US Banks Customer Service. they act like your a thief trying to steel your own money from them.
I give US Bank's Customer Service a big Fat "F". They are very unhelpful, very condescending and leave you with irate and insecure feeling about their
institution and your money.
DO NOT SIGN UP WITH US BANK AND IF YOU ARE CURRENT CUSTOMER LIKE ME, DO LIKE ME AND RUN!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Chad, I could not agree more. Like yourself I have never incurred any such fees with Cal National. Last month US bank took, YES TOOK, almost 400 dollars in fees because they themselves were letting items come through over and over again daily while creating the actual negative balance themselves.
Further after they had raped me of such fees they then bounced my Cobra medical insurance check causing cancellation of my insurance policy. When I went into the bank to request a letter for my insurance explaining what happened they said they could take that responsibility. Well they certainly can take their fees can't they. This bank is wrecking my life. I am also on disability and they could care less. This is a very predatory bank and I warn anyone of banking there, they are crooks, snakes, and it's embarrassing to me as an American for them to call themselves US bank. Shame on you US Bank, how absolutely disgusting and predatory are your practices. I feel for anyone who banks with you who is in a compromised position. Your staff are heartless robots with no emotion whatsoever. Absolutely Disgusting and an embarrassment to the human race. Your reputation of treating people badly will destroy you eventually. Too bad you cannot realize that now. As I read over the complaints, there are hundreds of people with the same complaints. I do not think that is just a coincidence.
Sincerely,
GJE
sleazy marketing practices
U.S. Bank has the sleaziest marketing practices. When my daughter was 18 she signed up for 2 U.S.Bank accounts at an all day rock concert. they were giving out free tee-shirts. She kept getting letters from U S bank for several years with a statement. Finally when she was 21 I called them and threatened to sue them if they did not cancel both accounts. They only cancelled one so I had to call them a few months later to cancel the other one. She never even received the credit cards for the account, but they sent her cash advance checks.
This Sleazy bank markets to 18-25 year olds at Rock concerts, and College weekend parties when they are loaded and/or drunk. Lots of these students and young people are not in any condition to legally consent to U.S. Banks terms and agreements. I am a lawyer and this disturbs me.
She was, but when they market at college weekends they are looking for beerfest students.

harrassment/account closed disabled, no notice
Due to theft, I'd closed one acct., opened new, told it was protected. I told all authorized vendors of the change. One put through unauthorized charge on old acct and bank charged me on new. US Bank management at this branch called me at 8:30 a.m. and reamed me about notifying vendors, which I'd done. They hit me with NSF so when I told them, after much hostility from them, that it was wrong and they needed to work their magic and fix the charges, they closed my account, without notice... leaving my disability check (only income and they knew it!) with no direct deposit options. That put my rent, medical, etc. at risk! They were rude, harrassing, and charged every time they had a chance for anything they could...even when they didn't put cash deposits in the account on time. What a mess with this bank. In Ohio and NV where I banked but especially the Ohio office.
suck accounts
Signin for an account wit us bank is like signing for life penalty.
Opening an account with us bank is the must horrible mistake to do.
While I had deposited $8000 to my us bank, I spent $2 at starbax about all must a month later. They charged $2000 over draft fee….
Why?
I was not supposed to use my account for 30 days, because my account was a new account. That is what they told me…
Us bank sucks account holders money with reasons they create. If you have an account with us bank, no meter how you do, what you do, us bank will find a way, find a reason to suck your money.
maybe u should have read your account agreement, oh, wait, you cant spell, how can you read?
robbery
Us bank is crock, thieve, robber.
They did this to me when I made my banking on internet:
Yester day using my papal account $320. The system said ups, it did not go thru this time, try again. One or two minutes later I did the same thing but, this time I tipped $324 instead of 342. Continue reading, see what will they do to me…
An hour later, I checked my account online. And found out that both, $320 and 324 has gone thru. I called their 1-800- number and spoke with many of them but they did not want to help me. So I asked if I could talk to a supper visor.
Finally they passed me to supper chiter.
The super visor mr taior morgan.
I asked him to stop the $320 transaction but let the $324 to go thru.
He said: we can not do that.
I said: this is my account. I should be able to decide what to do with my money.
He said: mmmm, ok, we can do that but, it has a fee to stop a transaction.
I said: how much is that:
He said $30.
I said ok. Please go ahead and charge $30 from my balance and stop the amount of $320.
…….
This is what they did to me.
They charged $30 for stopping one transaction but, they did not stop. So both $320, $324 went throe. This morning I checked my account again. I found out that my account showing -$70 over drown and they have started charging $37 per day over drown charges. I may end up paying 1000s $s until I recover from the overdraft fees. To do that I need to find money to deposit to my account for cover all my (-) negative balance coursed by daily $37 overdraft charges…
They did this kind of tricks to me several times in a year. I believe so far I have paid about $3, 000.00 overdrafts fee.
They take advantage of every one like me and especially latinos, because the regular banks would not open and account for us. Us bank knows this and they take advantage of people…
fraud??
My Fiance and I deposited some money after hours and then took some out because we needed it right then. We were under the impression that a bit of that money was avalible now and some you had to wait until bussiness hours for it to be in the account. We also forgot to put the check into the deposit envlope as we were in a hurry. We realized it later that night so the next moring I went in and thought I had cleared up the matter. Not long after we recieved a letter from U.S. Bank stating that our account was to be closed because of fraudulent activity. Mind you we recieved no warning that this was going to happen they froze all of our money. Plus my fiance had a check that was being direct deposited that day. So we call the bank and they said that there was nothing that they could do about it we had to call the fraud number and so on. Just to find out that there was nothing that we could do that all of our hard earned money was now theirs. They did however let us know that in 30 bussiness days we would get the money back. Which was a slight relief that we would at least get the money back.
Now we recieved a letter in the mail that we owe 1100 and that if not paid my fiance will be charged with a felony for fraud. We got this call from a lawyer who would not give us any information on where these charges had come from and where our other money had gone but he did know everything about us which i found to be very creepy and unsettling. He did say that we owed $210 im not sure why and the rest of the charges are for lawyers fees. This is just redic, so my fiance might go to prison over something that I thought that I had resolved right from the begining. We wil never ever bank at U.S. Bank again and I will make sure that all of my friend who have accounts with them know how they handle bussiness. I'm lucky that tomorrow I get money from my annuity so that I can play the money so that my fiance does not go to prison over something so stupid. It just makes me sad because that money was suppose to go towards hospital expenses when our baby is born this Novmber. Instead its going into the greedy pockets of U.S. Bank, but I"m sure they needed that money way more than a couple expecting their first child.
U.S. Bank needs to be pressured with Imminent (BK) Threats or Mediation Law and Procedures.
They are basically a giant collection agency. They purchase the distressed mortgage at Extreme Discounts from various key players in the sub-prime arena. They collect aggressively on this paper. They do not play by the rules and need to be pressed hard.
We have completed successful loan restructuring cases with U.S. Bank. They are all long run and brutal battles.

overdraft rip-off
This is the worst "predatory lending" institution I have ever dealt with- while I had money in my checking account, and bought things like a "cup of coffee, rented a movie $1.09, and a couple of other items under $5" they waited to post to my account, even though online it showed "pending" and reduced my balance. Days later when my health club membership went through, they "overdrafted me on all items"- meaning a charge for 6 different items under $5, by holding my health club membership first, then being .30 cents over, then submitted all the previous items that were days earlier so they could screw my for over $245 in fees- without the fees my account would have been 15 over- and recieved one fee. What a ### bank who needed bailouts to survive after ripping off consumers in the mortgage scam from a couple years ago- now they boast how "profitable" they are by using "predatory lending techniques outlawed in this country. Needless to say, I am closing out a 15 year relationship and going to a credit unioun or small local bank- screw these @$$holes... stay clear if you're wise!
I had this problem with 5/3 bank, they do operate the same way, they charged me 900$ in 3 weeks for 5.26 $ negative balance of one day!A lawyer suggested to take them to small claims court, for 45$ that I would pay the bank would loose thousands of dollars just to show up at the court and pay their lawyer! I never did that.I made another HUGE mistake after that-I opened 3 accounts at US BANK, now the same thing is happening. Just couple of months ago a received a letter from U.S District Court that 5/3 bank is being sued, they will lose 9 million $!and...they have to pay 3 times what they charged to their customers in overdraft fees!God bless America, inspite the hooligans who own the banks, there is God, there is justice.
This was never happening before, now it is because of bad economy. One of the managers told me, after I said that they are stealing the money from my little son:We have to feed our kids too!
Also I have heard too, that the best place to go is small local bank!
ps/when they HOLD all the checks to bounce them because of one, that is called RE-SEQUENCING!
us bank rips off customers behind the guise of personal property tax collections
US Bank is posing as tax collectors for the County of San Diego ... and profiting generously to pad their own fortunes. This is an outrage!
US Bank applied an annual fee of $100.14 to the monthly copy machine lease for our office. When inquired about, the County Assessors Office stated that the fee should actually be $43.00. US Bank stated that they charge a "handling fee" on top of the tax. When it was explained that the handling fee was thought to be excessive - even by the County Assessors Office - the staff at US Bank just replied "Well, that's the way it is. You don't have a choice in the matter".
loan service
The State of Minnesota with its 10, 000 lakes has more registered boats than any other state in the nation. You would think that making a timely boat loan would be second nature to any Minnesota bank...except US Bank. I found a great boat and called US Bank on Monday for a simple loan. On the following Friday after suffering through a week of one stupid question after another I informed the personal banker that if this loan did not get completed that day the seller will sell the boat to someone else. I was told that they would deal with this on Monday. As expected, the boat did get sold to someone else on Saturday and after being a US Bank customer for the past 6 years I'm now shopping for another bank. Adios US Bank...you've lost not only my personal accounts but my business accounts as well.
getting change
I have a business and I have banked with them under another name since 2003. I divorced and changed the name of my business and opened a new account reflecting new name. I have had the account for over a year now and they just started charging me for getting change. One's 5's and so on. Well they credited me Jan and Feb but now they aren't wanting to credit this months even though she said I wouldn't be charged again... They told me I was charged by mistake at first then now they are telling me it is a new charge to all business for ones and paper money that I come get change for. So today I decided to go back to a bank that I left. I have had so many issues with them about not depositing my deposits for 5 days that were cash and not depositing the right amount. Should I have charged them for that? It would be alot more than the 90 dollars they are trying to charge me each month for getting ones. Not like I am requesting thousands of ones. Just a hunderd or so a week. Anyone else come across this problem with USBANK?

shorted $100.00 tellers drawer has $1, 600.00 overage refuse to give me my $100.00
This evening 03/01/10 I went through the drive up of the US Bank on the southside of Pueblo, CO. I wanted to withdrawl $650.00 from my savings account. The teller Casey Kirk placed the money along with my receipt, ID, and ATM card in an envelope without ever counting the money back to me. I started to pull forward when I saw that the teller had shorted me $100.00 there was only 4 one hundred dollar bills and 3 fifty dollar bills in the envelope, so I immediately pulled up to the building and went inside. Another teller Ms. ? Chavez asked to help me I explained the situation and she said "he is going to have to count his drawer" with a nasty little attitude!
I moved off to the side so other customers could be helped and waited while Casey counted his drawer. He finished up and quietly directed Ms. Chavez to his computer screen which I could see read drawer over $1, 600.00. Ms. Chavez recounted everything in is his drawer and came to the same amount. Ms. Chavez then proceeds to tell me "we can't just give you the $100.00 until we verify he is over, since this happened so late today we are already on the next days business so you are going to have to wait until Thurday." There is nothing we can do now.
So I am just supposed to leave the bank $100.00 cash short and trust these screw ups. The best part is if I would have been the one to make a screw up on my account then I would be charged $35.00 per screw up and then an additional $5.00 per day I didn't deposit the money to cover my screw up and fees! I was assured though I have a "5 Star Service Guarantee", yea a 5 star service guarantee that they just STOLE $100.00 cash from me! So basically I just paid for Ms. Chavez and Casey Kirk to go have a nice meal on me here in lovely Pueblo, CO!

Check this out. A deposit was made of 6800 in a business account. they only deposited 3800. my slip shows the correct amount 6800 but only 3800 was deposited in my account. It took over a week for them to put my money in the account. Yeah no extra money just I'm sorry. They mess up so much I am switching. I am all for giving a second chance but they are wearing it out. Please
Next time, count the money before you leave the drive through teller. Who cares if there is a line behind your car. The bank rep EXPECTS you to count your money in front of them, [censored].
fraud
My driver license was stolen sometime between January 12th and January 15th I found this out only after it was used when someone went through the drive up at US Bank downtown location drive thru handed the teller my drivers license posing as me said they didn't know their account number, the teller looked up the account number, gave out my account number to these (at least I know there was two involve, one was a female passenger) people, they withdrew 435.00 out of my checking account. I found out about it the next day when I went to check my account balance online. I immediately contacted the fraud department by calling the US banks toll free number. I also went to my local branch immediately the same day, closed out my account and reopened a new account this time placing a password on my checking account, the Personal Banker at another branch location also placed notes on my account stating the current fraud activity.
Two weeks later January 28th, the same people attempted to do it again. They went to the same US Bank location using the drive thru, attempted to withdraw money again. The teller again gave out my NEW account number! Only after giving out that new account number was my password verify along with other identifying information. The branch manager from the bank where this has taking place, contact the Personal Banker at the another branch location that I have been personally dealing with, she in turned contacted me, informing me of another attempt to gain access to my account had just accrued and that account number too had been compromised. I will have to close this account too. Was told at that time this person (female) even tried to contact the corporate office to get the password removed from my account so they can withdraw funds. My Personal Banker even told me she had a conversation with this person over the phone and knew it wasn't me.
My bank said they have an image of the person and that their security people had given that information to the police, I too made out a police report when this took place the first time and reported the new attempt involving my new account number too. The Personal Banker told me they caught an image of the license plate taken that was used to attempt this crime the second time, but later recanted that statement changing her story stating there was never an image taken of these people or license plate number. I was also informed by the investigating officer that the bank never reported the first theft.
I'm in the process of closing out my accounts and switching to a different bank. So far I have not received my money back and was told it was still pending as of January 29th.
I have not found out if the same teller was involved or not!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I mistakenly overpaid (online ) on a car lease by $20, when I asked them to return the extra money they told me it was being used for RETURN ITEM FEE PAYMENT which means they will charge me for overpaying on the lease. The lease is the only account I have with US Bank and the money was transferred from another bank.
Lat month someone went into the US Bank and deposited a $2500 Check into my account and took $2000. Then went to another state and took out another $400. I noticed the fraud on my account and all my US Bank accounts were frozen. They are invegistating. I am guily until proven inocent. Now im being told after they discover that i am not the one who did this it will take them another 45 to 90 days to return my money. NOW i have their collections department calling me because my account in at a negative balance. WORST BANK EVER.
This so sounds like USBANK in arkansas to. Takes them days to do the right thing. It could slap them in the face and they still couldn't see it. Some people really don't need to work at banks. Thats why we put codes and passwords on things to help keep us safe.
I live in Portland, OR and I also dislike US Bank. I do believe they owe you both an apology and all of your money returned. I know in my personal dealings with this bank that the level of incompetence is unbelievable! Have you talked to that branch's manager? I would be on the phone immediately with him, and if he gives you no very quick answers, I would then be on the phone to that bank's regulator - an office of the US Treasury. Ask them to tell you specifically whom their regulator is - laws have changed recently. I had a claim against Wells Fargo several years ago and the regulator at that time was the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (which is under US Treasury Dept.) I called their office in Houston and was given very specific info on who to contact and how - they helped me a great deal, and Wells sent me a refund check PDQ! Banks do not like being reported to their regulator!
Good luck with your claim - I agree totally with this outrage
I live in Omaha. Which branch was this? Location? Hope itsnot mine, but maybe I need to switch from USBank anyway? Sorry you are going through this.
fraudulent charges
US BANK! HUH nothing says US about this bank, a customer to this bank since 2001 however when a accident totalled my car, the insurance companies auto and Gap had faxed documents to this bank advising of payment processing and soon would be delivered. However 6 days before Christmas- Hearless Huh this " bank" decided I was no longer valued although they had info in writing they would recieve payment they TOOK almost 300.00 out of my account without authorization although direct debit had been cancelled and all their good for nothing customer service manager could say that's policy and well you should have paid. The Gap insurance company sent the check out on 12/19/08 to this company and what I was advised from this terrible instituion is well when we get the check you will get your refund - the late fee 29.00 - the 50.00 fee for cancelling the direct debit option (that they still debited) I would have to wait 7-10 to get what is left back from my money. Some 5 Star service Huh? Yeah I feel the five stars in my rear from this Bank. I warn you all don't walk past US Bank to read signs, if they say come in we have specials yeah speacial hidden fees, specially screw their customers. YOU ESPECIALLY RUN TO THE NEXT BANK! you've been warned.

Seeing all the complaints about US Bank actually makes me feel better; at least I'm not alone! I feel justified in my loathing for this bank. I can't explain the whole problem because it's not my account. My son saved all his money in college for a two month trip through Europe. I told him to get a new bank before he left but he wouldn't listen. He overdrew on his account; he's using ATM machines. The infamous 'white postcards' started coming to the house. I called the bank but they wouldn't talk to me! I begged them to help me straighten out the account. I couldn't get a hold of my son. Also, some of these charges were from weeks before that were just being processed. The postcards kept coming despite putting $800 in the account; the fees were wiping out our deposits. They were charging fees on the fees! I called again and told them I was my son. Still got nowhere. They told me I had to go to an office. The office is in Milwaukee. (Marquette University in Milwaukee allows this 'Sopranos' organization on their campus. Maybe Marquette is getting a cut) We've now put in $2300 in hopes that this will come to an end. I can't even get my mail; I'm afraid the postcards will cause me to lose it all over again. What an awful, awful company. How do they live with themselves. Please write your representatives to support Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee and author of overdraft fee reform in the last session of Congress (H.R. 3449). People who make honest mistakes shouldn't be punished like this.
We had a checking account through US Bank. They had deposited 80 dollars of somebody else's money into our account without us knowing. We called the number on the back of our card to check our balance one day and we had X amount of money in there, so we went shopping. We didn't spend all of it, but the next day I get online to check our balance again and it shows that we are over drawn.
They had realized their mistake and took the 80 dollars out which put us 26 dollars in the hole. They then proceeded to charge us over draft fees left and right! I called and called and they kept saying how it was our fault for not keeping a register! I then told them that they offer an automated register, the one I had called to check the balance... They refuse to stand behind there offered services and to work with us.
I told them we would pay for what we spent but not for all those overdraft fees. Still to this day, no one will help us.
needless to say, I am now 1700.00 overdrawn. nsf fees are 1000.00. Havent talked to the bank yet, getting all my facts together so I look a little smarter then they do. I will take this to higher forces. My money will not go to those jerks.
They suck . overdraft protection my ###. Its lets build our revenues, and let you overdraw your account up to around 500.00 and we will rack up nsf charges to its peek. A month earlier wouldn't allow me to withdraw from my account and I was only 5.00 overdrawn. their revenues must have been high in may.
While I understand the frustration of overdraft fees, let me explain the other side of this story. I work with credit card disputes for a bank, and about 70% of the disputes I handle are fraudulent charges. I find notes on accounts everyday that someone called in pretending to be the cardholder. How much angrier would you have been if some stranger had called in and we had been lax in our security measures? They could have gotten away with sensitive information that would have certainly led to much more money lost in fraudulent charges to the account.
At the end of the day, if your son is old enough to have a debit card and tour around Europe, then he is a big boy, and should be responsible enough to keep his account balanced and not overspend to these extremes.
On a side note, I will say that most banks will hot-list (place a block on) a card that is overdrawn too deeply or for too long. It does seem strange that they didn't take that proactive measure.
unpleasant experience
This bank has been screwing my father for years, with over drafts and the like, while admitting no fault of my fathers he was still required to pay penalties, He had a Auto loan thru usbank with insurance in the event of death of him or spouce loan would be paid off wich he forgot about but the bank didn't forget and continued to withdraw payments, when we found out and confronted them they payed the loan off but have never reimbursed him for the past three years. USBANK told him three weeks ago he would get a cashiers check in ten days, when he didn't get it they said that was a mistake and it would be mailed out in two weeks, we requested it be deposited directly to his account, we were told they could take the request only no promises.

outragous overdraft scam
I have been a US Bank customer for a while. I have gotten overdraft charges before because they push charges through to make sure there is a negative balance before midnight. But that's business, so I paid the outragous charges and kept banking with them. But this time I knew my account was going to be low, so I made sure at 11:00pm that it was positive by transfering money from my savings. When I checked the bank account the next day, I had four charges that appeared from nowhere with overdraft fees! My husband, trying to calm me down, called to see why these charges just appeared and why they were not reflected on the amount the day before. The bank specialist told us that if the merchant does not collect within five days, they just take it off the available balance! So I had no knowledge that these charges were still pending, it didn't even show on the account balance. It was the holidays! Of course sometime between 11 and 12 pm they just popped right back up. If I was aware of these charges I would have covered it. This makes US Bank a very unrealiable source to help keep track of funds- which is what a bank is supposed to do! Generally when I have plenty of money in the account they wait until the next day, but when they are low always, always push to get overdraft fees. This is no longer a bank I can trust or recommend. If you bank with US Bank, your available balance shown on the website might be fraudulant.

I've had the same experiences in Seattle, Washington, and similar suspicions about the way they do business. It does indeed seem that charges go through quickly when my account balance has been low - and in a different manner when my balance is high. In this way, you get comfortable with your banking cadence - until they catch you off balance (with a low account balance) they they swoop in and just take fees, driving your balance down lower, then they can take more fees. I also have noticed that they have found more ways to charge me during the holidays! Additionally, they have a whole pile of nebulous rules on how they handle deposits. Although your account balance will reflect a deposit you've made, I have been hit with overdraft fees after the fact because of "holds" they will place on my funds ...the following day. I am talking about CASH deposits and paychecks from the giant well known company I work for, not personal checks by the way. And they give me a different rule each time, as their excuse, based on time of day, a time zone that is not my own that they are using, ATM deposit (in my actual branch) vs. making a deposit in the drop box, day of the week, type of deposit, how much money I had in my account before I made the deposit, and well it took them several days to determine it really was CASH I was depositing. Over the years I have heard all of these excuses. I think this is their sneaky way of keeping you from learning and thus making the same mistake. Why do I still use them? Good question ! I'm overbooked and over busy and don't have time to go discover a whole new set of deceitful practices at another bank, I guess.
rude and intimidating
On Sunday after Xmas, Cari X 688 calls. She first asked for my ex and I asked who is calling. When she told me it was US Bank I told her she could speak to me about it because I am joint account holder. She told me about the loan amount and that it was past due. She said she was calling to collect.
I explained to her that this bill is split 50/50 with my ex and due to a misunderstanding they only got half of it by the due date, also, I told her I just noticed it this week when I got the bank statement, and that I had already scheduled payment online and they should get it by Tuesday. She asked me how I felt and I asked her how she felt and said "I feel good because I pay my bills." So I told her I pay my bills too and how dare she implies that I should be feeling bad about myself because of this. She asked again "are you ready to pay this now?" I asked her if she was deaf. It is ridiculous that this was sent to collections the same month it was due.
An hour later I.C. Systems called, they didn't respond to me, they just hung up. So I research and find out IC is a debt collection agency. So now I understand what she meant by "I will keep this in collections as if you refused to pay"... Awful people.

Wow I'm glad I closed my account a long time ago, ever since I did I've heard nothing but bad since. I closed mine just to consolidate accounts.
