I purchased a Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21 in. Cordless Battery Walk Behind Self-Propelled Lawn Mower a couple of years ago. A few months ago I was notified of a safety recall related to a wiring issue causing some of this model mower to catch fire. They sent me a replacement mower shortly thereafter.
On 6/23, the new replacement mower stopped working correctly. The mower would keep running but the blades would shut off even with the self propel still running. Then when you tried to restart it, the mower would either not start for several minutes or the display on the handle would not light up. It would continue this same cycle for the next 30 minutes before I gave up fearing there was a battery or wiring issue that might cause a fire.
I reported this issue the same day it occurred via e-mail so I would have a record of the conversations. One a week for the last six weeks I've had to e-mail them for an update only to be told it was being transferred from one department to another to research. Finally today, they informed me I had to take the mower to a Ryobi certified repair center which is about 2 hours away. If I didn't want to take it there then I would have to pay out of my own pocket to send it to the center.
I've already spent $300 out of my own pocket to have my lawn mowed professionally over the last six weeks because I am not going to risk using a mower that may have a similar issue as the previous mower that was catching fire. Ryobi has shown no sense of urgency in my issue or the financial loss I've taken because of their lack of resolution to my problem until today. I've already spend enough to cover half the cost of buying a new mower so I am not spending another dollar to get this mower driven or shipped to a service center meanwhile continuing to pay someone to mow my yard until I get the mower back.
Recommendation: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!! You may find yourself in the same position when your product is out of warranty and you may not live anywhere near a certified Ryobi service center.
I forgot to mention that some of the same issues I described were reported in the Home Depot comments section for this product. They are under the one star comments.
