Dollar General very unprofessional conduct

While standing in line waiting for a cashier to cash out, there was three of us in line at the time. Three dollar general employees come walking up talking. The next thing you know is (I believe she was the manager) the one started yelling at one of the other girls and making threats. "i am the manager here I can make you work everynight, every weekend, and can also make it so you want to quit. I am 54 years old and could not believe what I was actually seeing and hearing while waiting in line to cash out in a place of bussiness like that. That was not a good seen and will not return so I don't have to see anything like that again.

Dollar General store operations

I went into the mt. Zion, il dollar general store as a last ditch effort to find a material I needed for a school function. However, when I went in, there was literally no clerk in the store. As I stood around, waiting for five minutes to be waited on, it dawned on me that the two women standing right outside the door smoking were the clerks. I stood there for another few minutes, then looked around the store. In the meantime, another customer came in and attempted to purchase some items. Again, the women stood outside, not even looking in to see what we were doing. The man and I both left at the same time, empty handed. As we were leaving, one associate sarcastically asked if we needed any help. The other laughed and asked us if we found what we needed. I have never been so insulted in my life and will never shop there again.

Dollar General termination for no apparent reasons and no evidence of action

I was recently employed at this location and was accused of something that was brought to my attention that led me to my termination. The manager and assistant manager had it planned to fire me due to I was dating the assistant managers daughter and when we broke up for me to go back to my family, they harrassed me at my job and as well at other locations. The store assistant manager the mother of my ex girlfriend and her son are both employed at this store which is a matter of conflict of interest, as well as when the daughter and the mother wrote statements expalining that I had stolen a camera, with no evidence and as well as their complaints resulted in anger becuase i would not get back with their daughter, the accused me of the matter, however it was explained that the daughter was the one who stole the camera and the mother who is the assistant manager let her walk out wiht the merchandise. No one never investigated the issue they just terminated me, I even agreed to a lie detector test. They just terminated me for no reason and how can they and receive information and staements from a non employee and the mother of the person giving the statement. Blackmale!

Look up your state laws about businesses - some states do not need to have a "right to fire" policy. I live in Arizona and we do not have a "right to fire" policy. That gives any company any right to pay you what they want (even if under minimum wage) and gives them the rights to fire you with or without a notice of why they fired you. I would assume given the example you've given this rule would also apply to your state.

Dollar General non-payment for hours worked

Monday, February 1, 2010

During the month of August 2009, I worked for Dollar General in North Arlington, NJ. In July they sponsored a Job Fair at their new location in North Arlington. On August 14, I began training with the Manager at that time, Pete Fox. On August 18, I actually began working at the North Arlington Location. On Tuesday, August 18, 2009, I worked from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM without a lunch break, a total of 6 Hours; on Wednesday, August 19 I worked from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM with no meal break, a total of 4 hours, on Thursday, August 20 I worked from 6:00 AM – 11:00 AM again no meal break a total of 5 hours; Friday August 21, I was out sick. On Saturday, August 22, I worked from 4:00 AM – 9:00 AM without a meal break, a total of 5 hours. On Monday, August 24, I worked from 4:00 AM -11:00 AM without a meal break for a total of 7 hours On Tuesday, August 25, I was off. On Wednesday, August, 26 I again worked from 4:00 AM – 11:00 AM with no meal break for a total of 7 hours. It was on this day that I was told that they had hired too many sales people, and that I was one of those being let go. At that time I was told that I would receive two checks for the hours that I had worked, I asked if I could pick them up, and was told to stop in the following Friday to do just that. When I asked for my check I was told that it had been mailed to my home address. Since I was terminated from this establishment, there has been a change in the Management at this location. On Thursday, January 21, 2010, I telephoned the new manager Ron and made an inquiry about my missing check. At that time, he stated that he would have to investigate my claim. He took my Social Security Number and stated to me that he would be in contact with the previous manager Pete Fox, and that he would get back to me. It is now February 1, 2010, and, I have heard nothing from either the former manager, nor the current manager regarding my back pay. Since making these inquiries; I did receive my tax forms from their central office. This tax document shows that my earnings while with them to be $330.00. The only payment I actually received was an earlier check for $120.00. Thusly $330.00 - $120.00 = $210.00 that I am still owed as payment for the hours that I actually worked. I am tired of playing “telephone tag” with these people; the evidence is clear, by the very tax documents that “their” payroll department sent to me. This document unequivocally demonstrates that I am owed this compensation.
I would appreciate any assistance that you might provide to help resolve this matter.

Call the corporate office. Also you can ask to talk to the regional manager, where the store is located. I would also call labor relations in your state. Believe me Dollar General makes a lot of mistakes. I use to be a manager at one.

Dollar General district and store management

First off, I would like to express my sick distaste in the entire company of Dollar General for the following reasons. I have a friend that is an extremely hard worker and has helped run 5 of the Dollar General stores due to lack of employees and qualified management. She was fired over a situation that was totally out of her control. Yet there are District managers and Store managers of the WAYCROSS area Dollar General stores that find it okay to over-ride payroll hours in order to make their stores look like they are performing to premium projections...District managers who let my friend go Two Weeks through the entire christmas hollidays without a paycheck because payroll was messed up due to a store transfer. I am surprised that Dollar General is still in business due to the inept unqualified and uncaring corporate management in this region.

Does everyone who applies for a job get a hiring package, fill out a w4 and direct deposit information and take a drug test all before they are even hired? This is what my daughter is being told three weeks after filling out the hiring package. Now the manager is saying she was not hired even after she was told to come in for training. They put off the training for 2 weeks and now she finds out she isn't hired. I can't believe the company would pay for a drug test for everyone that applies for a job because that's what the manager is telling her. The manager said the DM didn't want her to hire my daughter because she was seasonal hel which the manager knew this information at the time she was "hired". Would have been nice to know this before buying uniforms for her to wear and turning down other jobs that have since been filled. Not a bet impressed with this outfit. I have never heard of such disrespect towards employees. She was happy to work there.

my complaint comes out of effingham illinois. i jus quit dollar general cuz of my MG... when i was hired on i told him i could only work days cuz i have only one car and my husband works 7pm to 7am and he told me that was fine and i said i would work a night shift if someone called in ... he continuously scheduled me nights every week and i had to figure out somehow to be there and to get home... i live bout 20 mins outside of town so it was hard... but he can leave when ever he wants cuz he is on salary and he dose all the time and jus dosnt seem to care... he works everyone else like dogs cuz he can and somehow he gets away with it... i can only hope that the new GM can see what i have seen in the 3 months i was there. if every DG employee did things the way he dose there would be no one to work there

Back in the 90's, I had a DG dist mgr tell me Wal mart was behind the times when he interviewed me in GA .After I stopped laughing, I got hired by another company. Later DG was invesigated by the SEC for cooking the books to make their stock look more favorable to the stock market. This company is for someone looking for temp employement. Hardly anybody retires with them. DG doesn't want you to. LOL

My complaint is about the dollar general store in Henderson la. store number 847 there are the most rudes cashier every to work in this store.If you are a routine customer they seem to look down on you which I am, this was the final straw for me on Aug.09, 2011 I went in to return an item the cashier told me I needed my receipt, which I did not have, I only wanted the same item I previously brought but just in a different color, the price was the same.She refuse to accept my item than went get the manager which she had a chance to counsel in the back before they came to the front.The manager when on an agree with the cashier. I than left there store and went to a different dollar general which accepted my item, then I ask them about there return policy and she stated without a receipt you can get something else in the store are a gift card.So I explain what happen at the other store she then advice me that it seems to be a personal matter against me and that cashier that giving me a hard time, becauxse she said it is really up to the manager to agree for the return and clearly the cashier that does not like me got to the manager.What makes this so inconvenient is that this dollar general is 2 miles from my house so now on I will have to travel 7 miles to the nearest family dollar store.

my problem is with Flora, MS Dollar general address 117 Progress Drive P.o. Box 288 phone number601 879 8843. i am a I very displeased customer and will choose Frde instead of Dollar General from now on. I had fone on Dollar general website to print coupons the night before i shopped and used my ink and paper which cost money to print coupons. And little to my knowledge that when i went to the register they would NOT accept their own coupons even though i got them from their website! i was furious! i then left the store and called back to talk with the manager and he told me over the phone as well that even though they say dollar general and i printed them from their webste and the register scanned the dcoupons they had to remove it because they don't accept internet coupons from their website! my question is why do they even have the option online at all. I will not spend my money there anymore! i am going all the way to the top with this i am going to call corporate until i get answers. wsre have familes out here struggling to make ends meet and trying to save a buck on items that offer coupons so we can pay for this high rising priced gas and they kick you in the butt!

my complaint is against store manger in gaston south carolina.she is never in the store the other girles, working, cant do a return without suprv permission.this causes jam at checkout .i have had to leave a buggy fill of merchadise more than once..i have been told, by some of her co-workers that she goes home on booty-calls with various delivery drivers..that puts, , stuff out back door for friends to pick up. wish dollar general would do something about this manager, she is driving customers away

Dollar General Dress code

It is ridiculous that I work for a company that forces you to beg for donations from customers that not only for obviously reasons have no money or would not be shopping there but are made to feel bad for not donating their money.

Plus, once again our dress code is changing and guess who has to pay for the change? Employees! DG will not even provide the uniforms but they sure will be nice enough to sell the shirts to us for regular price. Then of course we have to buy the pants to, which I can not afford the shirts little long the pants. If I had money I would not be working at Dollar General. I need regular clothes, food & so on, I can not imagine trying to find the money to buy for the new dress code so I can continue to work there. They expect us to make a living on what they pay plus they just cut the pay roll again so I only get 20 hours a week now!

People need to understand that store clerks are people too we are human beings we get tired we get run down we get burnt out but we normally still have a smile on her face. I may also point out that during this Covid crisis, where most people got to go home and sit on their butts and collect unemployment checks we were still out here dealing with the public, in public 24/7. We have put up with rude, ignorant, belligerent people day in and day out. So if you have had a bad experience at a store because a store clerk is having a bit of an off day because they are probably so completely worn out or so overworked that they have not even got to see their families, do try to put yourself in their shoes or better yet be the bigger person and tell them to have a nice day. Instead of getting on here and complaining and whining because you're obviously one of the ones that are at home collecting the unemployment check right now. I hope you all have a wonderful day

I am a fan of dollar general but ruth has screwed up again. She has hired many managers and the last one was the best since the first manager was here. Connie would speak to you and always help you and the shelves was full. Now they fired her and hired dawn bell. She has not passed her test, she was in the front of the store and not once did i hear her sy hello to any customer, offer to help, or even be friendly. Last week i was in there and she has a cart blocking the fabric softener. I said excuse me twice she took a half step forward and would not move. I reached to get it, iwent over to the vitamins. She followed me. I had to move aqnother cart to get to them and tiffany was there, she told dawn that people keep moving that cart and dawn said i wish these damn customers would stop moving these carts. Tiffany is also a rude one. There is 4 people working in that store. Michelle is nice, helpful and working hard. Jess will say please, help you and say thank you. Tiffany never says please, says thank you in a rude voice and she and dawn are buddies and very rude. Ruth the one above dawn is not doing her job. The back room is full, they had pulled teresa and her boss in last week and the worked their ### off to work all that stock and they spoke to everyone. Today that store was packed. 4 people in line jess was checking and dawn never went to help. Do something please! Ruth, dawn and tiffany have to go or this store will shut down. Its back to normal, empty shelves, and as usual ### in charge, bring connie condo back, get rid of district manager ruth and our new manager dawn and tiiffany. I am not the only one complaining and 2 area dollar general stores are not happy with connie getting fired and bringing in dawn. Please help or you will lose a lot of business.

Worked for the company 5 years and was forced out of my mgr position by my rm and to make it bad was put on the no rehire list, why in the words of the rm to much tragedy in the last few years in my family. One son killed in 2006 car wreck my mother and another son killed in 2009 car wreck and at the time this happen i had just found out my daughter had cancer. I was always at work and do not think i was treated fair at all. Yes more to this story but would nt waste my time on dg. Just want the world to know what kind of company they spend there money at

I would like to tell everyone not shop at 3209 est Thompson ln store mge daen kendall usea mgr postion in wrong way for 1 she barrows money from customer !Also uses company time 2 go online 2 dating site 2 meet men online!Also takes markdoen product from store for home use is the behavior of good mgr is this what dollar general hires 2 lead there stores.

I work at the Dollar General. It has already been a month. I haven't received my payment for 45 hours worked. They told me I am supposed to be paid 8.50 hour. I went to complain with store manager 6 times already. She told me she can't see my hour in the computer. I ask assistant manager and he told me she is the boss. I called corporate office and they told me you should talk to manager. I can't believe whatever hour I have worked I couldn't get paid. Also, they can't see in the computer. That's is the hardest thing you ever experience. Still I am trying to find out where to complain and get my wages. I am not planning to give up. I have proof with me that I have written hours I worked and clock in and clock out slips with me. I need to find where to complain.

I've always liked shopping at this store when they first opened. The longer they have been here the more the cashiers just seem so un happy with their jobs. Maybe its management? The cashiers wear, or should I say used to wear nice bright yellow polos. Now they look like some one ran their shirts over on a blacktop pavement. The cashiers are not professionally dressed to work in a sales department store. They some times look as if they just crawled out of bed. For some reason, this store always only seem to have one cashier working! Even when there are up to ten customers in line. My comment to this day is, "I rather go across the street to the Family dollar store" because, for one: they hardly ever have a line and they seem happy with where the work and are always professional. My wait in line at dollar general is ususally 20 to 30 minutes long... I dont understand why the other worker does not help out? I like the sales that they offer at dollar general, but the wait is ridiculous! Esspecially when you see elders in line who can barely stand.. This is a very busy store and is understandable, would be nice if they had an available clerk to help out when it gets busy. As far as appearance, maybe clerks be offered more than one shirt for work. That will avoid the the wear and tear. Because trust me, they do have an employee who does wear her work shirt with HOLES in it. And I believe she is a manager! Very embarrassing. Dont you think? To enjoy the dollar general prices we go out of way and drive to the Ft. Mohave store that is 20 miles from my home.. When the local one is only 5 minutes away. Very shameful.

Well i have been working for Dollar General about 6 months now and i love my job and the ppl that i work with however, i was recently over paid and which we all know that i couldn't keep it even though it was their mistake but anyway it has been almost two weeks and they have not taken it out of my check so i haven't thought anything of it until today when i was informed that i will have to buy a money order and stamp and send it back to them instead of them taking it out of my check and i know it is only like 2 bucks but the point is that it is their mistake and i don't think i should have to pay for it

The store manger expects her workers to work like slaves then she takes credit for it. She talks about her employes like a dog. The Assistant Manger and her have been best friends for years and she lets her by with everthing. She never does recovery she tells the cashiers to run backstock all the time and not to do recovery. Then the cashier gets in trouble for it . But when the cashier tells her that the assitant manger told them not to recover to run back stock she dosn't say anything to her. She lets her by with everything. In my personall opioion i think that the store needs a new store manger that cares about there employees and cares about what goes on there. As long as she is there, there is no hope for that store. She puts her personall live before her job and that is so wrong. She dosn't do EZ PLanners like she should and most of the time the schedule is'nt made before saturday night.

I was at the store at Arlington and Thompson in Indianapolis and I found a book in the dollar section and it had a dollar sticker on it. I brought it to the cashier and she rung it up and it rang up 5.00. She then told me that clearly SOMEONE had put the dollar sticker on it and that it rang up 5.00 and it was clearly a five dollar book. I told her there were other books back there for a dollar. She blew me off and told me it was 5. I told her I didn't want it. I then said it was wrong of her to accuse me of putting a dollar sticker on it. I walked out without the book. I do not appreciate being called a liar and will not ever shop there again. I have plenty of money to buy what I need and I neither a liar or a thief. Please look into this matter because I am sure her crappy attitude will be put on other shoppers. Thanks

I bought 3 packs of Chicken Gravy and when I opened it, it was brown
gravy. This is unacceptable. You need to check with your QA and take care of this problem.

Dollar General we need better management

I have worked at the DG in my town for over a year now. I still work there, and I am in school at a local college full-time. I keep my job because around here especially, jobs are very hard to find. I have very few complaints with my job itself, I actually do not mind my job. I love to interact with people, and I just about know all of my customers by name. The pay really sucks, but other than that it is a job. My Store manager, though, seems very sexist. In the last year I have worked there, we have had at least 4 new people hire in, none of which are male. We have an all female staff except for my store manager who is a male. All of the girls that he hires are, well, young and pretty. Most of the time they do not even do their jobs. I do not mind working hard, but sometimes the trucks and lifting gets rough. We have girls who cannot lift due to pregnancy and others who just refuse. I know many men who need a job and would be more than happy to work. I just feel like he is being sexist in his hiring. Not only that, but our assistant manager is lazy. She does nothing when the SM is not around except for sit on her butt and talk to her friends and family on the phone. She has been suspected of taking money. When I say she does absolutely nothing, I am not exagerating one bit. The store manager has been informed and talked to about her behavior several times, but has never confronted her. WTF? I think our store is in desperate need of better management.

I have shopped at Dollar General for 40 years. I live in a small town/rural area. It used to be a store that would save you money. Not any more. They continue to jack up the prices and put the raised price in such small font that many do not notice until they pay the bill. I have also noticed that the food items that are there for the Mexican patrons are way over priced. The Dollar Store should not gouge the migrant workers.

Their customer service is almost a thing of the past it seems. Today I stopped at the dollar store and spent about $26.00. I had intended to ask for change $1.00 in quarters for the news paper machine. I went back inside, stood in line a long time and they refused to give me change, saying that I had to make a purchase. I already had told the cashier that I just made a purchase. If I wanted to get change I would have to make another purchase.

I think that I will save money if I shop at Fred's. It seems that Dollar General is pricing themselves out of the money saving category. Dollar Tree stores have many of the same items and only cost one dollar per item.

Dollar General has many, many stores and they are big enough to still offer money saving deals on all of their items. They have just gotten greedy.

Dollar General not worth it

I have worked with Dollar General starting off as an Assistant Manager in December of 2007 to later get promoted to Store Manager in June of 2008. I ran a high volume store with only 4 employees on staff. If my employees couldn’t get the work load done, guess who had to step in and finish it. Yes, me. The STORE MANAGER. It infuriates me to think of how much this company really doesn’t care about its employees. I see all the time how they’re getting sued left and right. Gee, I wonder why. I had other store managers come and help me at my store every other week it seemed because I didn’t have the time to even look for new employees let alone hire new ones. Once those other store managers glanced at my schedule and saw that I was working about 80 hours a week, they looked at me and said “Is this your REAL schedule?!” Well, yes I replied. I didn’t have a choice. I had to be at the store due to staffing issues that my District Manager wouldn’t help with, basically, I was doing everything myself. That store wouldn’t run without me being there….period. Working for this company took a hard downfall with my life. My personal life. I was never at home anymore to be there for my kids, I honestly didn’t even have a life. My own doctor warned me even that I should look for another career to pursue cause this job was about to kill me, that’s how hard I was working. My kids eventually had to go live with their dad because they hated me that much more for having spent so much time at this place. That’s how much overtime I worked. Some weeks, 80 hours, some weeks even more if there was a corporate visit. Working late nights until 4 or 5 am, or even overnight since being there since 6 am to open the store that same day. It was close the store for the night, then wake up and go open first thing in the morning. All the time, never failed. Sure I could have my employees do this, but they always called in or always had an excuse not to show up. When I brought these matters to my District Managers attention, she said it was up to me to hire new employees. Well ok, no problem, but if I’m having to do everything else in the store at the same time as being a manager, how am I suppose to run this store efficiently? I can’t even be a “manager” if I can’t even get off of the register long enough to even LOOK at applications. I even worked at OTHER stores to get them prepared for corporate visits because we knew they were going to get visited, and we must have stayed at that store scrubbing wax and other debris off of the floor, laying cement in the front foyer, painting posts, proping their stores to where they looked emmacualte, ect. We did it all. And I’m sorry, but this was NOT in my job description. If they’re looking for a cheap way out, they’ll do it. And they’ll use anybody that knows how to do whatever it is they want done. I thought in my own mind that being a manager was to manage your people, your schedule, your store and inventory. Being a manager at this company means going above and beyond every day until the point where they almost kill you. And trust me, that is NOT AN UNDERSTATEMENT! I truly regret ever working for this company and really putting my blood, sweat and tears into this so called "management career" due to the lack of ethics this company stands behind. Worse off than that, they turn a blind eye to their own managers including me when it’s profiting them not to have to pay for someone’s hard earned paycheck for all the crap they put people through. I hope this letter gives you somewhat of an insight on what a lot of “managers” go through working with this company. I too have once before talked with lawyers on going after them for all of the overtime I have put in to try and get some kind of compensation on this. It’s against strict labor laws in the US no matter which county, or state you live in to work people like this and NOT pay them. They’re excuse is that they “classify” our store manager position to be EXEMPT from hourly salary so that we can be there to run the store all hours of the day/night. Which I’m sorry, but when I was hired, no one told ME that I was going to be doing. Seems like this particular company comes up with all sorts of ways around the truth, other than the truth to appreciate how hard their employees really do work for them. To me, that’s just sad. I no longer shop nor reccomend this store to anyone I know now. I have boycotted the whole business no matter what products they have either in stock, or how much cheaper they sell it for in this tough economy now a days. If you're reading this now, I would take a step back and really consider just how well you have it, and how much trouble it would be to go out of your way to pay for an item that costs $2 rather than paying $2.50 just to please your self consciousness. NOT WORTH IT to let this company profit off of the people that truely know how hard work really pays off...But that's just my opinion...

I cant stand this company. The payroll numbers you are given compared to the tasks that need to be done are just crazy. the worst part is i transferred to a new store to work why i attended college and was promised at least 25 hours a week. I didn't end up getting an aid for college so i figured ill work and try to save up money until i can afford to go. 3 weeks ago i was scheduled for 37 hours witch i was very happy about. the next week it dropped to 27 witch sucks but still is around the 25 i was promised. last week i work 18 hours and this week i have 14 hours. my boss told me that he had seasonal help he was going to get rid of but ended up waiting to long so they are now regular employees. we have been through 4 different district managers in the last 2 months. this company makes no since with anything they do and they don't give a ### about there employees as long as there getting there money. i was never given my 6 month raise that i was told about in September of 2009 because evidently the changed policies in Feb of 2009 but arn't sending the new policy books out until next week. there are to many flaws in the way they treat there employees and its impossible to get anyone to hear what you have to say and get anything done.

Wow does this post sound way too familiar... Its sad when the LP supervisor asks you "do you really work all these hours?" (when I was taking care of 2 stores) and then turns around and tells you that if so and so was here you probably won't have a job.

I was an Asst. Mgr. at a Dollar General and I understand what you went through. It's just like you said. I was even illegally put on Medical Leave at one point and had to get Advocacy Inc. to help me get my job back. I had a nice store and I loved my customers but I was being worked nearly to death. The pay is awful too. Just be glad you're gone and not having to deal with it anymore. I quit voluntarily after almost 4 years and they have a new DM now and the first thing she did was fire the Mgr. and bring in her own Mgr.

Dollar General greed

Recently I went into dollar general to purchase things that I needed for my home. I usually spend $35-$40 a week in the store. The way things are now a days, we have to watch what we spend. The cashier was pleasant enough, but I was continuously asked to donate to not only one, but three different charities! I looked the company up on line, and this is a multi million dollar company! So why are they asking the average shopper to contribute to these charities, when they have such a high prophet margin! You know that they will take the credit for the donation, but the company itself dropped no money into the bucket. All they manage to do is drive away thier customers - send them straight back to walmart. I personally would rather deal with the crowds then feel like I was just charity raped!

We are expected to ask. In my district we are expected to bring in $14 a week ($2 a day, which is not a lot) in literacy fund. The title of your complaint is 'Greed'. Really? Is it greedy to facilitate donations? When I ask the cutomer if they would like to donate their spare change to the literacy fund (oh the evils of helping kids learn how to read!) most of my customers do gladly (probably because they are NOT greedy and understand that 23 cents is not going to severely impact their lives but could really help somebody else) and those that do not donate are not harrassed and wished a good day just like everybody else. The fact that you felt the need to post this (a defense mechanism based on your guilt for greedy sentiments) shows that you really need to get a life, or wait, even better! maybe try to help someone else!

No one likes asking for donations, but we get into serious trouble when we don't ask. I'm not going to lie though, when it's just me and my cashiers, I refuse to ask. I work in a terrible neighborhood, and everyone pays with EBT food cards and EBT cash cards, and spare change. Do they really expect someone who paid for a loaf of bread with nickles and dimes to donate to a charity? No, of course not. I only ask when my store manager or DM is there. Let them ask, and see how it goes for them.

I too hate asking for donations. I think everyone at my store puts in a little bit here and there to try and make up for not asking every person. We've had complaints to home office about asking for money, but yet its the policy. Go figure.

I know how you feel. I work for Dollar General. I hate asking people to donate. If I do not I am expected to put the money in myself. I thought that was illegal for the company to force me to put my own money in for not asking for donations from people so I complained to the Department Of Labor & I was told it is not their problem! I have no idea who to go to. If people were made of money they would not need to shop at Dollar General for cheaper prices. I have been at Dollar general for over a year due to not being able to find another job yet. I still make minimum wage & only get 23 hours a week.

Dollar General age discrimination

I recently was let go by this company. The RM has a history of pushing people out who all just happen to fall into the 45-65 years old category. They all seem to be getting replaced by others who are less than 40 years old. This is occurring at all levels, DM, SM and Associate. How do they continue to get away with this?

Update! As of today I'm fired from Dollar General. My manager says it was a check for $60.68 that they couldn't find. In other words, I was short $60.68. I saw my termination coming 2 weeks ago as you will see by the post above and since that first posting one employee over the age of 45 has been fired. Today is my turn. 2 weeks from now the "key holder" will be fired. She is 54 and believes as I do, that we are being "set up". For one thing our manager is working at the store under 2 passwords. She told me this herself. She claims she didn't know how it happened but they have her under 2 different passwords. One of those passwords is similar to mine and the key holder trainee one night got mine and the manager totals mixed up. That's another thing. A young trainee is doing the daily totals. I NEVER HAD A $60.68 CHECK! My manager claims that "maybe I just handed the check back to the customer". ###! I may be older, but I'm not stupid!. I believe due to this manager having two passwords, she is able to manipulate the "books" to whatever is convenient for her, and is helping Dollar General to get rid of us old employees by this route

This manager is running under two passwords at the store and is doing the same thing to a key holder who also is about to be fired. I am the 2nd firing in 2 weeks of employees over the age of 45. The next person to be fired is 54 years old. Just thought you'd like to know.

Everyone over the age of 50 was wrote up at the Dollar General I work at here in Florida, including me. It's happening here. The RM gave the order for me to be wrote up due to a few days of a "low basket". That is, my average sales didn't meet company ideals. I work in an economically depressed area of Bay County so if my customers don't want have a lot of money to spend, I am held accountable because I didn't "push" an extra sale on them. I'm 53. My manager was ordered to write herself up and forge the RM's name on it for the same reason, and also a key holder was written up, although I don't know why as to her case. All of us, over the age of 50. No younger were wrote up.

My 14 year and 11 year old went into Dollar General to buy a birthday card for there cousin and was stopped at the door by the employees. They told my kids that only one child in the store at a time. My daughter was at the front of the store and proceeded to pick out a card and they told her that I am not going to service you if you don't listen. I myself goes into the store due to at the time I saw both of my kids standing at the door as if they did something wrong. I ask what is wrong and the lady states if they are not 18 they are not allowed in the store together. That rule is very unfair to kids and in my opinion the worker should not have any contact with the kids in the store unless they are doing something wrong. I will challenge that rule only due to the embarrassment of my children. They were treated as if they were criminals. The kids are our future and by no means a child should not be treated that way, especially by a Dollar General store.

Dollar General mangement

I was former employee of dollar general (Jackson heights) murfreesboro tn for five months and several stores in surrounding area with no problems and even was asked to come give help when needed. New manager was transferred in, and all of a sudden everything was completely different - (Ex. Not permitted to count drawer before or after shift, payroll always being cut, bringing in "her" people who don't have a clue regarding customer service, she herself rude to customers and employees) this company is infamous for "promising" the world and delivering absolutly nothing - then if you leave you loose your "creditablity" same old, same old i'm gonna, i'm gonna. (Theme song)
Personally would not recommend anyone to work here!

I feel ya there been with these pukes for 18 months 3 store managers 2 dms and 15plus hourly employees they treat you like dirt. If you put in the kind of time I have they'd rather outsource some 50-60 year old to take over instead of give someone a shot thats been in their store 1.5years. They hole company is a joke you report internal theft to a dm and you gotta go to corporate to get a pos taken care of. If you want a promotion get your knee pads and some good mouth wash cuz you'll be blowing a district manager for the next 5 years to get a dollar raise all stores are the same and all dms are stuck up ### that brownnosed to get a salary.

I work for a Dollar General in Columbus, Georgia and I TRULY HATE IT. I dont blame you for quitting, its just that I need this job so I can get through college and the economy is bad right now, so it would be hard to find another job right away. My main complaint is my lazy [censor] manager. By the way, I am a "supervisor stocker", as he calls it, I dont get paid more or watch over anybody, its just a name with more work. So after me, another stocker and the manager are finished stocking whats on U-boats and Rolltainers, it is my job to clean up, take out the trash (which is real full every single [censor]ing day), make sure there are no boxes on the floor, and thats about it. Well, the manager just leaves boxes on the floor and expects ME to pick them up. Even though there is another stocker there, he tells me to do and that really pisses me the [censor] off. And then on top of that, he tells me to stay there later than I have to be, I got [censor] I need to do. One day, I am going to snap on his [censor] and I may lose my job, but it will all be worth it... [censor] DOLLAR GENERAL, IT IS A HORRIBLE PLACE TO WORK.

Dollar General crap management and honoring laziness

I've been working with the company for the past six months. Started off as a stocker with only two days a week, despite being in retail for the past five years. That manager got sick and had to quit. Our store was a mess, then an outside manager came in and managed the store for three months and completely had the store running the way it is supposed to. He and I got along great because we both had the exact same mind-set and both of us have high standards for how the store is supposed to be run. He saw that and I suddenly got bumped from two days with only 10 hours a week straight to five days with 32-40 hours a week.
My first complaint is our 3rd key, who doesn't do a thing. All she does is goes around and straightens the store, then she comes up with some BS excuse why she didn't do the planogram she was supposed to do that night. She was supposed to do the food planogram, she didn't do it until 3 weeks after the deadline. And even then, she didn't do it on her own. She had to have the assistant manager practically hold her hand while doing it. I really wish she would be demoted. Not fired because she is great with customers and doing basic stocking, but she is incompetent in her managerial duties. Her excuse for screwing up and not doing anything is always "I didn't know how to do it because I wasn't trained". She has been 3rd key for 8 MONTHS. She should have learned everything she needed to know on her own by now. I mean, I've even taught her how to do a few things that she didn't know how to do because of her supposed lack of training.
I do my job and I get nothing to show for it. The outside manager left and we now have a new permanent manager who claimed on his application to be a former K-Mart GM. Turns out its BS because he accidentally let it slip to me that he wasn't even a manager at K-Mart. They didn't even do a freaking background check. He's been here for since late August, was in training for a month before that, and he still doesn't know how to do the things a manager is supposed to do. I've even had to show him how to shut the store down and count the money! Seriously, why should a freakin' sales associate have to teach these two? It's literally me and the Assistant Manager taking care of the store. We are supposed to set up the store the way the company says to in the books with those pretty pictures, or (as the people who do their jobs like to call it) the planogram. Me and the Assistant Manager are always going back behind the 3rd key and GM, moving the holiday stuff to the isle it is supposed to be put in because they put it on the other side of the store.
Our Assistant Manager is a hard worker, but has a bad attitude problem. One of those people who "tells you like it is". Now, I don't mind that but it is not a good thing to be a blunt ### towards co-workers and customers you don't get along with and get an attitude with anyone who doesn't make you laugh.
Everyone that works in that store knows I take great pride in my work and show great dedication to my job. If I see a planogram that needs to be done, I do it rather than just loaf around because "there is nothing to do". A few days ago, my assistant manager called me into the office saying that they're thinking of getting rid of me if I don't "straighten up". I ask her what she means and she said that I don't wear my name tag every day (forget the damn thing once and they make a big deal about it).
1- Says that the GM is mad because I did a couple end-cap planograms that he didn't give me permission to do. Aparently it is a bad thing to put christmas candy on an endcap that the company says it's supposed to be on, even though he told me to get as much of the christmas candy up as possible. I did my job on top of doing two endcaps with everything exactly as it was supposed to be.
2- Said that the 3rd key is saying she tells me to do stuff and I refuse to do it. She never told me to do anything except that one time when she told me to straighten the store, which I had just finished doing and no customers had come in since two hours earlier (we're located in a very dead location). So, since I was cashier, I went through the impulse area and rooted out all of the expired candy. Wanna guess how much of that candy was expired? Not even an exaduration: at least 90%. We had barely any candy up in the impulse area because someone finally combed through it. I found 3 Kit-Kats that have been expired since 200-freakin-5. I almost staggered back when I saw that mixed in with Kit-Kats that we just got on truck two days before. I let that be known and I'm still hearing about it as a bad thing I did. And whenever I do have nothing to do, I ask the manager on duty. They always only tell me to "Just straighten". That is the only thing they tell me to do, then they (aside from the Assistant Manager) don't talk to me the rest of the day.
3- The Assistant Manager claims she over-heard me complaining to a customer that I hadn't taken a break yet. Why the hell would I complain about not taking a break during a 4-hour shift where I was covering for an injured co-worker? I have pulled a 13-hour shift with just a 15-minute break before without complaining to anyone, and it was my decision to stay. I didn't have to, but I wanted to because I didn't want to ditch my store with just one person working there. Especially since we are in a crap area with bad crime.
4- I came in sick earlier last week, but called in and asked if I could do stocking since that needed to be done so I can stay completely active and work myself out of being ill. My productivity didn't even waver, despite being sick. Now I'm getting criticized for coming in sick because of the fact that I didn't want to call off work at the last second when one associate was just fired for stealing and the other had already called in sick. (So it was just me and the 3 keys)
5- She says is also claiming she hears a lot of crap about the store, mostly about me. Our entire customer base is consisted of nothing but regulars. I know every customer by name and they know me by name. Many have said that they shop there because they know I will be working. They even know my car and some only show when my car is in that lot. So I know it can't be crap coming from customers, so it must be co-workers.

The assistant manager and I specifically stated that "I am not telling you as your boss, I'm telling you as your friend. If you don't straighten up, you they will get rid of you". Why the hell is it that they are wanting to get rid of me? It seems the only reason they're wanting to get rid of me is because I do my job and actually know what I'm doing, unlike the GM and especially the 3rd key. I seriously have to not do my job in order to keep my damn job?

Good Girl! You definitly hit the nail on the head! You obviously have worked in the Murfreesboro Tn. stores. Do yourself a favor and don't transfer here, because we have the same BS. I was starting to think I was the only one that had "Turnips"(which is probably an insult to the poor root veggie) for management. My 3rd key is the same story. It has to be the whole corporation! Another store i help out the assistant manager
(who's pregnant) sits in the office and talks on cell phone, and when needed on floor all she does is complain, and says she can't wait to go home but her husband is manager at another store and is friends with the DM.

Well first I payed for gift card 20.00 then you apply for reloadable card and you put money on it for me it was 70.00 for internet purchases smart right! Dollar general took money but later took no responcablity for the so called visa card that they have put there name on as well as visa for the theft I have tryed for 2 months now and over 500 min. Dollar General bad service / managment

This is my complaint against the dollar general store in my area! I usually visit this store several times a week and now have decided to never ever go there again. Everytime I go I have to wait for several minutes before I can find an employee to ring up my items and when they do show up it's due to the fact that I have to whistle or run around and try to find someone to help me. Then they are rude and disrespectful toward me because I am there and they to do something. Several people usually are lined up before service is available.
Also I have witnessed rude and unexceptable behaviour toward the hispanic race, as if these employees do not like and just don't have time to wait on them, i'm a white woman and not hispanic and still find it to be disgusting how these people are treated in public! Hopefully someone will see this and do something about this store! Oh and for the old lady that works there that makes rude comments to customers and asks personal questions that should not be asked, she should be fired for this behaviour!

Im just going to reply to several statement I have read.
First- DG cashiers are expected to stock one full rolltainer per hour while running register. I wih everyone who has ever complained about having to wait for an employee to come to the register to try to pull that off. stop being so impatient. If we dont keep the store stocked then you dont have the products you want to buy. The company wont let us put a bell at the registers so we have to try to run around and stock and keep an eye out for customers. From personal experience I can also say that many of you who say you have had to wait for 5 minutes are exagerating greatly. I had one woman throw a fit because she had to wait for my cashier for 10 minutes. She demanded to speak to my district manager, so i took her to the office and showed her the tape of her waiting, and she literally stood at the register for less that a minute. Common really?
Second- The company does not always inform us when a product is recalled. When we scan something at the register and it rings up and says that the item is recalled we CANNOT sell it BY LAW. If we do we will be terminated. If it rings up at a penny it means that the item has been discontinued and CANNOT be sold. If we do we WILL BE TERMINATED. Im sorry but im not going to lose my job so you can have your cargo shorts. Just not going to happen.

I just came from the Dollar General Store #00971 in my area. I was buying a chemofloge pair of shorts. It was priced $4.00 but they rang it up on the register and it rang up $0.01 and they said they couldn't sell it to me. I was very angry with them and refuse to ever go in there again. I thought it was policy that what price the register rang up they were supose to sell that item for that price. Please tell me if they were in the right. Didn't think they were supose to refuse to sell any item in the store.

I agree. I also work at Dollar General. It literally sucks the life out of you. They will not allow us to have a bell either so I have to continuously run all the way back up to the register every few seconds to check to make sure no one is there & people still get mad. We have stock to put out, help people on the floor, straighten store, work register & so on. I work minimum wage & have been there for over a year. I only get 24 hours a week. I get a 15 min break to have a quick bite & use bathroom. They work us like dogs & we get treated badly but yet the customers still treat us like we are beneath them & trash. No matter how the customers treat me I still smile at them, hold door open for them to make it easier & I feel like crying when they are so hateful but I just keep going. I need the job to bad to quit.

As I can't explain the racist part of your complaint, however, I can try to give you some insight on why a cashier is not around when you are ready to check out. I am a cashier at Dollar General and when I am cashiering I am supposed to be working on other things as well. A lot of times in the morning they only have single coverage and the only person working is supposed to be doing other tasks. Also, corporate does not allow us to have a bell! I think this is ridiculous that they want us to do all this other stuff and then not be available when a customer is ready. Now, when I am working register and supposed to also be doing other things, it is an annoyance to ME when a customer is whistling or yelling at me to tell me that they are ready. I prefer when a customer is about to go up to the register and they come to me and tell me that they are ready so I can then walk up with them. I know that it is annoying to the customer also, but we as cashiers have many things we are supposed to do WHILE running the register. They (corporate) expect a lot from us and then we also have to wait on the customers. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, but from my perspective, this happens to me all the time and I know that the customers don't understand, however, it can get annoying and I can understand why the cashier might wear her feelings on her sleeve and come off rude. I hope this gives you a little bit of another perspective.

Dollar General work

I've not been employed with the company very long, and while I am still employed I have noticed more than a few things that send warnings off in my head. We are insanely short staffed, when I began my job I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they had no employees. The managers of the store I work at were more than polite as was the other Cashier, however thing's have began to reveal themselves to me slowly.

1. If you dare complain about the company ( I.E. Not getting breaks when you are meant to they will find any logical reason they can to let you go.)
2. Open packages within the store, If Loss Prevention notices them before you happen to, they will let you go with the accusation that you are the source.
3. If you are lucky enough to get a break, and happen to be stuck in a line and open you're drink before paying, they will let you go regardless on if you pay for it after the fact.
4. Customer is always right, it doesn't matter if you've caught them stealing or not.

I have had my life threatened more than once while working at this establishment and each time it is brushed off with the " The customer is right" alway's trailing in tow.

We have Outside management because the original management has been let go, with no real logical reasoning behind it of course.

I am really at a loss on what to do.

Dollar General overworked, underpaid and abused!

I've been working for Dollar General for nearly two years now. I've put my blood, sweat, and tears into this job (litterally). From the moment I applied for this job to the present I've been abused. It all started with my first store manager. She hired me in November of 2007 but wouldn't let me start until January of 2008. And never informed me of health benefits even when I asked. She finally told me that I was eligable for Cigna. But ofcoarse, by that time, I was no longer eligable. She had told me too late. I had to wait six months for Blue Cross Blue Shield. When I finally was eligable for that the insurance company tells me my supervisor would have to make me full time. She was no where to be found. Then she requests that I transfer with her to a Dollar General in Gallatin. I agree to it and still, she was no where to be found. I was working in a strange place with strange people and I wanted to go back but they had replaced me. Then, my manager resigns in a text message over night. I was alone. And wasn't even in the system yet.

Weeks later we finally get a new store manager. I ask her to make me full time and she does so without hesitation. I liked her. She seemed like a good person. That was until a year later (now) she has my salary at the new mininum wage (7.25) even though I've been working there for nearly two years. I'm a very valued employee. I close every single night. I am the best compared to the rest and she treats me like ###. I called her and from the moment she answered the phone she had a tone with me. I told her that I appreciated the raise (I was expecting a raise at the time) going from 7.05 to 7.25 but that only got me up to the minimum wage. I told her that I had two raises prior and was expecting another and that my salary should be around 8 dollars. She freaked and said no. She said something like the Federal Goverment won't allow her to do that and that she has no power over my salary. That was a lie right there. Every idea/ attempt to being justified here has been destroyed. I can't do anything about this so I'm complaining.

Hi I worked for them to and got the same treatment. I even would work my breaks and lunches with out pay and run stupid erronds for my manager. If you start a suit or anyone starts a suit let me know. Keep copies of your clock ins and outs.

Dollar General innappropriate manager

The day manager in this store is ver rude. She argues over advertisements which are clearly stated. One time my daughter spilled a little bit of pop on the floor in the store. I couldn't find anyone to report it to. Shortly after the manager and another employess were making a big deal out if it and were loudly pointing out my girls. They were saying, "there are the girls, wheres the pop?" They made my friend and I feel so uncomfortable. I had to hide the pop on the shelf because I thought they were going to search my cart. I will never go back in there again!

im a 45 year old woman just decided to go back to work help husband maybe he would retire early get hired 3 weeks ago the manger of this sotre is rude and over bearing just waits for you to mess up its uses bad langue i really was liking the job i was real good with the money but this person is not a people person her attitude is a viper i had to quit bad experiance for the first time in years i tried to go back to work im a christin she used slurrs such as bible thumper who do i complain to kathy help

Dollar General donation

I recently took their on-line “survey” and consider such a survey a joke as only one question was used. The question concerned about the satisfaction I felt while shopping at your establishment. A survey that includes only one question does not supply you with a large enough population to accurately measure results with any certainty.
While I was checking out, the cashier asked me to donate to the Literacy Fund with some of my loose change. Who are they attempting to con here, I just checked their web-site and there is nothing supported within 25 miles of my community concerning any type of Literacy Program Grant from Dollar General Stores. The stores were founded in 1939 by Cal Turner in Scottsville, Kentucky. Turner was illiterate and later created a Literacy Fund which helps people learn to read; the fund is supposed to donate computers and books to local schools and libraries.
I suggested that instead of asking for more donations from areas that they do not support, that they support the communities that do support the Literacy Fund such as mine. I do not feel that I should support other communities as I keep my purchases within my local community and do not make donations to be used in other areas.

This is apparently a corporate initiative that the we the consumer is supposed to support. Dollar General Corporate does not support all local areas as evidenced by their 2009 Dollar General Literacy Foundation Adult and Family Literacy Grant Recipients report. So the next time I am asked for loose change at the check out process I will lay my purchase down and demand a refund due to their inflexible corporate policies concerning the generosity of their customers. I reminded them not forget the current economy is tight and the donations that they grew to rely on in the past are shrinking, and that they get used to this current economic situation and deal with the economic pressures exerted on everyone.

Dollar General should be grateful that some people actually do donate to this program. I strongly suggested that a sign on the collection container would meet their requirements much better as most do not like to be asked to donate and will leave without leaving anything, but a silent request made by a sign can gather more donations than the cashiers requesting donations from every customer, thereby slowing down the checkout process making other customers dissatisfied with the checkout process. I also suggested that they re-write their corporate policy on this, as the current corporate policy and practice is severely lacking in actual practice by the local manger at the Dollar General.

In closing I expect to see revisions to this policy within the next few weeks or my patronage at the local Dollar General will cease. I really doubt that they really care but who knows maybe this complaint can make a difference.

I'm currently working here and the donations has not change. I get haggard and even threatened to constantly ask customers to donate. We are in an inflation period and half of the customers pays with EBT. The changes that are donated into the donation box doesn't get counted and added to workers invoice on the computer. If most of your customers donated into that box it doesn't count. Nowhere on their policy stated for workers to obediently and continuously beg customers for donations at all. To get fired over this will be the most ridiculous situation to encounter.

Being a manager at Dollar General, these people that have posted about basket size are correct. Management does get fussed at for not having enough Literacy at the end of the week. The basket size is their indicator of people who are "sliding" merchandise, but with that said honest employees are fired because of it. When people have returns, it causes it to drop and when we have voids where people change their minds it drops the basket size. When these things happen it does cause a chain reaction, because as a manager anything over $5.00 we have to review on video to document what exactly happened with that transaction and ensure merchandise was put back on the sales floor if customer did not want. For example, you work four shifts in a week and for 50% of those shifts you did not meet the store basket size and you were more than 50 cents below the store average basket then you get your coaching. It stays with you for three months, you keep getting them they say it is a sign of employees stealing and therefore you are written or coached out of the store. Upper level management harasses each store for the amount they have in their "fund", I do agree however this person who asked why you wouldn't donate is really unprofessional and should be addressed by store management. That was crazy, if some one had told me this had occurred in my store there would have been action taken. Managers do not always know what is going on with their part time people or even their other managers unless someone notifies us.

I live in Starkville, Mississippi where we have 4 Dollar General Stores. I am contemplating never shopping at Dollar General again due being repeatedly harassed by Dollar General employees about donating to this ridiculous literacy fund. I usually shop at the store located at 616 University Square Plaza, which is the location nearest my house. At this particular store, the "literacy fund" boxes have no signs on them. The managers and cashiers are ever quick to ask for donations. I have asked them, including the manager, what this fund was for, where the money went, and did it help anybody locally. None of them could answer this, so I stopping putting money in there. Despite knowing who I am, the same cashiers continue to harass me about it. Very annoying. Recently, a new employee, a middle-aged, shaved headed, tattooed fellow, asked me for a donation. I said no. He then asked me why not. Not really any of his business., but I said that nobody had ever given me a satisfactory explanation about what the fund was for. He then told me it was for literacy. I said, yeah, but what does that really mean. He then defined literacy for me. He said, "literacy is the ability to read". I said, yes, I understand that, but what does that mean here. He again defined the word. I was not getting through to him. At this point, the employee was angry at me and behaving aggressively. Meanwhile, the people in line were having to wait. I just wanted to get the hell out of there. Then he commented that it was for children, so they could read. I said, "don't most kids go to school?". I walked out the door as he was still angrily talking to me. Good gosh, customer service is bad enough in this country without being harassed by checkout clerks about donating to funds that are not even labeled, and about which they don't even know what the funds are for. If this is really a company wide policy of Dollar General, then they should consider changing it.

I went into a DG Market, in Antioch, TN. There was a tip jar at each register. I understand the concept of tips, when i'm at a restaurant, but at the Grocery Store, where it's supposed to be a cheaper place to shop. Just wanted someone else's opinion. It threw me off when I seen it.

There is no excuse for bad employees in this day when so many need jobs that employers have a large choice to pick from. This is the basic email to a district manager with just the frame of what happened to me today. I hope this message is reaching someone who can take care of this matter. I went in to the store near my home today where I have shopped since moving here in August, as always with my vested medical alert service dog at my side to be attacked by an employee. I say attacked because I have dealt with many rude or untrained employees regarding my dog in the past and have always been able to calm the situation and educate them in an adult manner before this incident. I have had enough time learning to do this since I was injured in 2001 at the Pentagon 911 attack search and rescue mission. I use a German shepherd who is well trained, well behaved, and committed no wrong doing in the store. I did not know while there she is actually the manager. I even asked for a manager to which she still had not identified herself nor offered the information.
I went into the store with a cart, went to the kitchen supplies and got a cheese grater, I turned into the next aisle over Jennifer appeared at a run to the other end of the aisle and screamed down at me is that a real service dog. I said yes, he is my medical alter dog and I turned him sideways so that she could see his vest patch. She then said anyone can get a vest and that she has to protect her customers from a large vicious breed like mine! German shepherds have been service dogs since the beginning of the program. I would rather speak in person or phone with you further as I understand this goes to your black berry and I am unsure how long to make this with the rest. I also offered her a website on how to handle asking about service dogs to which she claimed this is how dollar general trains their employees again not identifying herself as a manager. I was so upset I did not get her name and had my son call there when I returned home after getting my groceries next door at the food lion where as usual I had zero issues with having my service dog along in a GROCERY store. Anyhow when my son was speaking to her she then identified herself as manager because he asked for a managers information. I would like to discuss and resolve the matter before taking steps turning it over to the Americans with Disabilities office for them to handle. I do understand people abuse it and I am actually one of the people fighting for stricter laws regarding true service dogs. I tried to speak with this person and she did not wish to hear it. I tried to educate her and help her and her only reply was, she did not have Internet access... I even apologised for saying yes he is a service dog in what she called a rude manner trying to defuse her and get her to discuss rationally, but she refused to act like a manager and leader of her crew in a professional manner. Customers even walked out and she followed me to the front of the store when I left my cart and decided to leave because she was still yelling at me. If my dog were aggressive and ill behaved, he would have at least barked at someone yelling at me would he not? I felt degraded and attacked she did not approach and ask me questions in person rather then yelling it across the store embarrassing me in front of all customers at a busy lunch time crowd. She essentially broke every single federal law regarding service dogs set federally bu the Americans with disabilities act.

One of you said, "at least the money is used for what they say its for". It's not. I am currently a cashier at my local DG, and have been for the past year and a half. I have seen on NUMEROUS occasions, money from literacy be used to cover up employee mistakes. Some nights, the drawers were counted and the cashiers' drawers were short. To compensate, the store's managers would TAKE MONEY FROM THE LITERACY FUND to balance the cashiers' money. Dollar General is a corporation based largely on lies - shop elsewhere!

I am a Dollar General Employee. We are required to ask for Donations to our Literacy Fund. It is used to help people learn to read, write, and to supply libraries and schools with computers and books. All of our Donations are deposited into a bank account and checks are wrote to those in need. Therfore all donations ARE sent to people in need, nationwide. Thank you.

I Completely agree with everything you had to say in this column. The survey is a joke and so is Dollar General. I am all for giving, but I personally don't like to be begged especially when I am shopping for already to expensive things. I am trying to teach my children what is right helping out others and being kind etc., but I find this task difficult when I manage a store for a corporation that is based solely on greed. In response to getting asked everytime you shop, as I do not agree with this policy and do not inforce it whole heartedly in my store I can say what our company does for us if we do not ask. According to our Dollar General handbook. It is mandatory that we ask if we get caught not asking we face automatic termination. Which I feel is crap! Get caught stealing from Dollar General and you can sit on your bum for 4 years and eat up unemployment, but get caught not begging for money your out of here. Is there something wrong with this picture? I most certainly think so. Also district managers have one upped the Dollar General policy, now we don't have to just beg for spare change, but we must obtain $50.00 or more aweek. THAT''S RIGHT there is a price on good will! In conclusion I do not blame you for not wanting to donate outside your community, Lord knows the goverment does enough of that. I applaud you for speaking out I feel more should do this to these corporate tycoons put them in there place they need to realize, as you said, times are tough and Lord knows we need all the help we can get. :)

Dollar General discrimination/wrongful termination

I was called in to another store to meet with Jim Hike this morning. I walked into the office where a DM in training was also present. Jim told me that this meeting was to "separate". He said that "they" decided to terminate me, and the company codes that were used were 43 and 46. #43 states: Mishandeling or failure to protect company assets and #46 states: Violation of company policy/procedure and that comments were required below which were: Violation of Transaction Void Policy and Code of Ethical Conduct Policy. 1st, if you remember I was suspended because I was told that I was being suspended because of to many transaction voids. 2nd, there is NO policy at all on transaction voids. 3rd, it doesn't state how I violated the code of conduct, but I am sure it is because I voiced my opinions and concerns about how DG and Jim Hike handle situations and conduct themselves. I have called the Alternative Dispute Resolution number and filed a dispute of the termination, because I feel that it was wrongfully issued. I have NEVER been wrote up for anything at this company, I loved my job and through my work I showed it. I have received compliments from both the customers and the upper management towards my work ethic. I'm afraid that at this point everyone at DG will sweep this all under the rug and act as if I have said nothing about Jim's misconduct.
I do have a hearing with the EEOC on Monday morning, and I do hope that they decide to file a suit. It's about time that someone stands up for employee rights at this company. Any words of advice or encouragement would help tremendously [protected]@yahoo.com or leave a comment to this post.

I was manager of the dollar general in Roxie Miss. I was threatened by my assistant manager for days and I told both the DM and RM of that district. But on May 19 th the DM come to have a word with me and told me let's walk outside. He them told me that we was not gonna talk about the assistant manager Kiota Hunt nor anything else that has happen cause he was sent there to terminate me just cause of roll containers in walking area in the receiving room which the asset protection seen a month before. Why did they have to wait a month for that? Why didn't they do anything about the threats toward me? The ASM has nothing done toward her cause she is in with them. She gets her way and gets managers fired from that store. I was the 6th store manager she had fired. Of course I had customers coming to me telling me she was selling cigarettes to 16 year old and cutting prices for her family. But who will even listen to what all is being done? I loved being a dollar general manager and watching my customers loving what I have done within the store... Now I have been told the store was closed for days, which mean loss money... Oh a and by the way I was never trained for two weeks to even be a trained store manager... Wish the higher up management within dollar general area all this... Dollar general in Daytona Beach, Fl. twice lately when standing in checkout I have been verbally threatened by customers for letting people in line when a new checkout opens and they say they will take the next person, so I let that person go. The threats were full of vulgar words and promises of bodily harm and the clerks just stand there and ignore it. I contacted the store twice by email and get no reply at all. The customers know the clerks will do nothing and bully the shoppers daily. Shame on you Dollar General! Don't ignore you customers, and provide a safe place to shop!

New employee jody at dollar gen. in sabetha ks. was lazy and unhelpfull. she would not even help to find what i was looking for or if they had it. way would a store hire a person like that.with the way things are today you think a store would care who they hired.hire a young kid that wants a job instead a lazy useless person.just because they think they look good or think they are somethin does not mean they can not care for a custmore.the store needs to make a change in my way of thinking.

Well from my experience and I worked a one of these stores in Hartford, Mi. The employees do not want to do there jobs because they are liked by the Managers and the Managers don't care because there management goes to there head and they don't think they can be fired. The store in Hartford I had to make the boss realize that the managers were just letting 6 ti 12 customers stand in line and the managers would not open there line up and call the customers there so they know another line was open. The best thing to do is to just go to a different one or just go to Family Dollar, they are owned by the brothers of the family that own the dollar stores.

I started working at the Dollar General in Evansville In and the assistant manager treated me like terrible on the second day. I volunteered to go in on a Saturday evening which was a big mistake. We were very busy and it was just the two of us.I had only worked the register for 1 hour prior to coming in. No one took the time to show or explain anything to me. She would leave me alone with tons of customers asking questions that I couldn't answer. I worked 7 hours with no lunch and a 5 minute break. When I got home I was so upset I cried most of the night.I could tell she didn't like me from the get go and was hoping I would quit. Long story short, I called the manager the nest day and she took up for her! I said I would call the corporate office about this matter and she said I am no longer having this conversation with you and hung up. Now I have lost my unemployment and have no job!

That is a wrongful firing if I ever heard of one. And they can not fire you if you can prove that what you were fired for was not your fault. on top of that if it was your second day they should of stayed with you or told you if you need help then page me with the bottom (stand for the phone ) when the managers have the phone the phone makes if sound and then it lets them know that you need help. Bring this event to the corporation's attention and find out if you can be hired back and wy you were let go and then let them know that it is on tape please look at it and let me know what day you are going to do that so you can be there to watch it with them. remember the date, day, and the time so you can tell them all of that . And remember the tape is only recording for 30 days that is all the recordings are recorded and saved .

When you hire someone, they may end up differently from how they seemed in the beginning of the interview process. Did you ask to speak to a manager? They can't know there is a problem if someone doesn't alert them.
