When the power goes off because of storms and we call for an estimated time of when the power will be back on, we always get the same message. That they are evaluating the situation and to call back later for an update on the estimated time. This went on for 7.5 hours until all of a sudden the power came back on. This is ridiculous!
We also signed up for alerts/updates on when we would be getting our power back on. Not a one. All we received was a confirmation that our power was out.
This is a huge bunch of BS. It was freezing in our house for 7.5 hours last night. At least let me know how long I should expect to freeze. Freakin' horrible way to do business. Don't offer something if you are not going to provide it!
abuse of poor/disabled disconnected with oxygen machine
A friend of mine takes care of his grandmother in Sumner, Georgia. His grandmother has a need for a 24/7 supply of oxygen provided by her electrically-powered oxygen machine.
About a month ago, he called me frantic because Georgia Power would not do anything to assist them and demanded payment of nearly $900 from a family that makes $650 or so a month total. I assisted in providing a majority portion of that amount, and Georgia Power seemed OK with that and after calling agreed not to disconnect the family before or around Thanksgiving.
Today, I received a call that someone had gone out there and disconnected the power, in spite of proof that the family had an elderly member dependent on oxygen for heart failure. I called Georgia Power, and arranged another payment in order to keep the lights on, however; I was told that they still could be disconnected again in the near future as an enormous amount of reconnect fees, deposits and late charges were added.
I have now filed a complaint with the public service commission in the matter and contacted my legal counsel. At this point, I will give the PSC a week to figure out a solution to this issue, there is absolutely NO way that family uses as much electricity as is being alleged by Georgia Power, furthermore; the company's inflexibility and lack of compassion, even calling the family a "Bad customer" while discussing things on the phone with a manager named Angela is completely unacceptable.
Given the company has been completely unprofessional, rude, insensitive to medical needs and absolutely heartless in regards to value of life, even showing the willingness to take that life by depriving the grandmother of the oxygen she needs to survive, I have decided to make it my mission to resolve this issue. If you are in a similar situation, DO NOT TRUST Georgia Power. They will say what it takes to get you off of the phone, and then do whatever they want regardless of outcome. I have seen this with my own eyes.
Right now, I will wait for the PSC decision, however; I am considering legal options in the matter as well as any form of retribution, censure, or penalty that may be sought against Southern Company/Georgia Power. If Georgia Power makes you a promise, get it in writing. Beware of their cavalier attitude toward poor and those who are least able to help themselves, money is the only language they speak.

Have you had any resolution for this blatant abuse? We were sent a disconnection notice showing we had until the due date which was 9/24/15 but we were disconnected today instead. According to them, even though they sent us a blatant lie that because we missed a payment arrangement they're allowed to lie to us and charge extra fees we obviously can't pay. When we mentioned there's a child in the home we were hung up on. When we asked for a supervisor we were told it would be 48 hours to get in touch with one. They were able to read all their policies to us but couldn't seem Theo end us the bill they sent showing a disconnect date 10 days from today.
property damage
My neighbor had a problem with their electricity, seems trees got planted over their electrical lines and caused them to get broken under ground, so they came out, blocked off my driveway. Put a backhoe on my driveway, broke my driveway, tore up my lawn, ripped out my cable, costing me 2 days worth of work, then told me to contact the cable company myself, and that the cable being ripped out was the cable companies fault. Very poor work ethics with this company. But they know they can do whatever they want.

refusal of service
My poor mother has been without any power for over a month now because they are holding her responsible for paying an outstanding bill that isn't even her account. And when my son moved in with her and leased the house in HIS name they refused him service as well using the "benefit of service" clause and claim that ANY one who might have benefited from use of the power at that address is responsible and can be held responsible for that bill. So even tho niether one of them has ever even had an account with Georgia Power they can't get one til the bill is paid and they have been told if it's not paid then they will NEVER get power in Georgia with them again. And they are claiming the bill is almost $2, 000...plus once it is paid they want more money for a deposit to open the account for them in their name. My mother even tried to get help from charities to pay this even tho she isn't responsible for it but GP refuses to deal with them due to the privacy issues of the ACTUAL account holder they claim they won't or can't discuss the account with anyone except the account holder. This is completely outrageous that with the economy like it is they can get away with this. I have been reading about their crooked business practices like adding extra charges and charging multiple deposits added onto peoples bills when ever they make a late payment...and DOUBLE BILLING in some areas. Seems to me like all of this is highly illegal and at the least morally unethical and something has got to be done about it. I have contacted the BBB..the news stations and consumer advocacy groups and all to no avail but it's time to start going higher up and we ALL should start contacting our state representatives and if that doesn't work then maybe a huge class action lawsuit might get their attention..it's time people knew just whats going on here in Georgia and how they hold power literally over peoples heads to extort money from struggling families...they operate like the mafia and are nothing but a bunch of thugs trying to cash in on people's hard times and there HAS to be laws against this kind of thing and I intend to find out and will NOT shut up til something is done.

I do not feel that it is right for this company or any other company to send you a monthy bill which you pay and then three months later send you another bill, which they call a corrected bill and tell you that you are receiving this bill because your services were estimated instead of actual. It is not the customers fault is this company makes a practice of estimating bills. It is wrong to send people bills with what this company calls three months of actual charges on a corrected bill and then will not divide that large bill so that it can be paid with your regular power bill. This simply feels like another clever way to cheat consumers and when someone has a limited income, what are you supposed to do.
Fees for a "returned check" that wasn't sent for payment
I used an access check drawn on my Capital One credit card to pay my power bill on April 5th 2012. The bill was due April 12th. On April 12th, I received two notices, both dated April 10, from Georgia Power. One related that the check had been returned unpaid and that my account was past due. Georgia Power was adding a $30 charge to the original amount of the bill. The second notice stated that "due to the repeated delinquencies", a $95 request for deposit was being added to my next bill.
I called Capital One to learn that they hadn't yet received a request for payment on the check and so could not have sent it back unpaid. Georgia Power customer service acknowledged receiving the check but said they "had an issue with the maker". For some reason Georgia Power appears to be rejecting the check and acting as if it has bounced. Further, it is odd that they take this behavior and then call the account "past due" on a date 2 days before the charges were due. I have had the account for a year and until this moment, there had never been a dispute. All payments, including this one, had been made on time and with sufficient funds.

I had exactly the same thing happened on me. They charged me two service fee and two returned item fee accumulated up to 3 months 374$ while my actually consuming was 157$. I was trying to pay with debit card and check every month, they were all returned. It drove me crazy! Get penalty of something that I haven't done wrong! I don't know if it is the Georgia Power's strategy to suck extra money.
I was notified by mail that my check had returned, I go to pay the bill and I receive another letter in my mail stating that I owe 145 because of "repeated delinquencies". Snail mail is the preferred method of communication on such serious matters. In an age of email and telephone, this is how they choose to communicate. Their software to handle routing numbers is horrid. I have never had this issue. Going through this, I did find out that they have a bill pay with a credit card, so I will pay the 3.60 to use this service to avoid their incompetent rigged system. You would think for a company that is subsidized by taxpayer money, makes a killing, and is a necessity, that they would be more "user friendly" and up to date. Nope, they are corporate thieves. Have fun power company, solar is on its way. I hope your profits drop you greedy mf's.
We are going thru same thing now. Account always has plenty of money (ten times the amount of the original bill) but they kept rejecting it. Said it was rejected for bad routing information but it was paid online by credit card.
So now I'm sitting here in the dark. And they won't accept anything but cash from now on.
Stupid company
Had the exact same thing happen 3+ times to total over $500 and two service interruptions. Good luck, you won't get anywhere with them.
outrageous deposits and limited time to pay
I have had several problems with Georgia Power. First and foremost is the fact that I monthly receive a bill a week or less before it is due. Because of that, I have an additional problem. I have been late paying my bill several times because they are expensive and have unpredictable bill amounts. They consistently attempt to tack on a deposit for being late and insist that they informed me this would happen when I swear on my life I had never hear anything in the regard before I received my first $600 bill(with deposit included) a week before they demanded payment. What a horrid way to treat customers.

Georgia power. Has charged me full deposit on my lights even.
I tried to explain I was livining on fixed income and need time and asked for apayment
Plan they would deine me and still give me a. Finanl notice but no9eedless to say still paid. Georgiapower they're money even if it I did still take it upon myself and made my own payments. Because gp is heartless and will shut u off even
If tell them u just had a baby they once shut me off wit all my sick kids were home sick from school for abalance I knew nothing about and dfc came and took my kids 10days bbefore christams my kids were away from me because georgia power shut us off
penalizing the poor
My husband has been out of a regular job for over 2 yrs. We are late on "all" our bills. Ga Power has tacked on and extra $150 to our bill every year because we have a history of late payments! Why penalize the poor because they can't find a job? Charge them more! Make them pay more! So what if they can't pay their bill now let's just make their bill higher! It is unethical, are they cold hearted money grubbing socialists. And I want something done about it.
I am equally upset with Georgia Power for charging me $150.00 "late fee" when I have paid them at the end of the month instead of the beginning of the month. What's the difference if they're getting their money? I have never been in the arrears with Georgia Power and have been a loyal customer for 16 years. I was "late" two months--in which they received their money--and my power was turned off. I paid later that day and got a $50.00 reconnection fee that they said was waived as a first time courtsey. So, now my bill is $200.00 higher. How can I possibly pay $441.00 dollars especially since I have been struggling to pay previous bills? Then when you talk to an unsympathic supervisor who doesn't have any solutions but to come up with pay arrangements, it only frustrates customers like myself more. Lastly, I'm told I can write to Customer Service. Really? Yet, they don't give a name or title of a real person. Georgia Power needs a major overhaul in their interactions with customers and their attempts to collect these outrageous fees. What this payment arrangement creates is a mess because customers are trapped in a never ending hole of debt and they know it. Georgia Power creates a no-win situation for customers. Shame on Geogia Power! Lauri W.
Georgia Power allows accounts to become 2 months past due before they disconnect ...Most companies will cut your service off for one month...(which I guess you could say that would be punishing the POOR as well) So anyway because of that..Yes, they do have to secure your account with deposit ..How about pay your bill on time! Imagine that yes "on time" so that everyone can keep their rates lower! Hope this was helpful to you!
Adding deposit
Georgia power adds $125 + because of being late a few times...my family was so happy that we had given them enough and would see a bill that we could afford . But then Georgia power adds another deposit for being late ... How is this suppose to help me out the hole its getting more difficult to provide lights for my family ... We need to do something, make sure our complaints are getting to the right people... When they see that there customers are having a hard time, they bill you more charges, this is sad and hurting my family in the worst way ... Why is Georgia power doing this to the struggling families?
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Whats up with them charging my daughter an up front deposit of $150.00 just because she is just starting out and has no credit. This will be her first apartment; she has to be concerned with move in fees to have to be bother with an up front deposit to get her electricity started. Companies just do not deserve to own a monopoly; they take advantage of the people it serves.
There has got to be something that can be done about adding extra deposit amounts on our accounts just because we have been late a few payments. Oviously there are financial issues present, adding extra fees is causing more frustration and possible disconnection attached with additional fees to reconnect. Please if someone knows who to write to about this, let me know because the places I have written to has given me no response.
Georgia Power has no real oversight and is allowed to do what ever they want
this is from their rules dated Jan 2011
"B. CREDIT REGULATIONS:
1. A security deposit amounting to approximately twice the estimated monthly bill may be
required of the applicant to guarantee the payment of all bills and the protection of the
Company's property on the customer's premises. The Company reserves the right to require
such deposit to be made by the customer, or the original deposit to be increased, if at any
time in the judgment of the Company such deposit or increase is necessary for its full
protection. "
As you can see Georgia Power has us Hostage
I too have Georgia Power and have been a customer for 20+ years. I agree with the original post. I usually make payment arrangements each month with them in order to keep my power on each month. Their rates are so high that I have to make payment arrangements each month. They do at least send out a disconnect notice prior to cutting off service. That being said, it would be best if they sent the notice in time to respond but that never happens. If they give me 2 days advance notice I feel blessed. Most times they tell me they will disconnect not the next day but the day after that one.
My list of problems with Georgia Power goes on and on but the reality is that I have no choice but to deal with what they dish out because I have no choice but to get my power from them or use a generator. There are no other companies available in my region to choose from.
unfair
I PAID MY BILL ON TIME WITH GA POWER BUT BECAUSE I PAID IT AT ONE OF THEIR SO CALLED AUTHORIZED PAYMENT LOCATIONS( METRO PCS) AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT IT SAYS AT METRO. THEY CUT MY POWER OFF. SO AS THE GUY WAS CUTTING IT OF I SAID WAIT, WAIT I PAID MY BILL ON TIME. LET'S CALL GA POWER NOW AND I HAVE THE RECEIPT. HE PROCEEDED TO DISCONNECT MY POWER WITH MY HUSBAND AND TWO BABIES IN THE HOUSE, AND ALL HE SAID WAS THESE ARE MY ORDERS. NOW THEY WANT TO MAKE ME PAY THE RECONNECT FEE AND PAY THE REMAINDING BALANCE THEY WILL LET ME WAIT TWO WEEKS TO PAY ANOTHER $200 INSTEAD OF PAYING IT NOW, REALLY. THEY SAID IT WAS CUT OFF BECAUSE THEY DID NOT RECEIVE THE PAYMENT YET... OK. THE MANAGER TOLD ME TO FAX MY RECEIPTS OVER AND I DID AND THEY JUST CALLED TO LET ME KNOW THE SERVICE WILL BE RESTORED TODAY. IF THE GENTLEMAN WOULD HAVE ONLY HEARD ME OUT THE DISCONNECTION FEE COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED, AND I ALSO COULD HAVE PAID THE REMAINDING BALANCE WITH THE NEXT BILL. SOLUTION: I will only pay my bill at ga power next time, I will try to move to a place that has other energy providers when we move, and I know now that ga power only wants your money, and kids or not they don't care. Keep in mind I paid my bill on time. What ga power can do for me: waive the reconnect fee, and allow me to pay the remainder with my next bill. Have a nice day!

My business has no power and can't communicate with Ga power. Unable to contact company. All phone numbers ring busy. Judging from their face book page this seems to be a regular occurance/problem. The 24hr customer svs #s (business or residential) all ring busy. How can they give any customer svs when all of their phone lines are busy?
extremely high bill
I called Georgia Power regarding my July bill. My bill was more in July than June and I was out of town 8 days during the month of July. No one was in the home, all of the lights, electronics, etc. were off as well as the AC. I asked for someone to come out and read the meter to confirm it was not malfuntioning and I was told by the customer service rep that they do not offer that service. She said the company does everything remotely. I then asked if they assessed the remote readings to ensure it's working properly. She told me that it's on a satellite computer and everything is working properly so apparently I used more electricity in the 3 weeks of July versus the 4 weeks of June. In addition to the convuloted billing, my household used 400 more kilowatts in July 2010 than July 2011 and the bill is roughly the same. This absolutely ridiculous. My thermostat stays at 77-78 degrees, the recommended temp and it's all for nothing. This isn't the most comfortable temp during a heatwave but in efforts to keep the bill low I sacrificed my comfort. To add insult to injury, Georgia Power has charged an additional $150 deposit when I've paid a $90 deposit already. I was told by the rep that they have the right to charge a deposit 2 1/2 times my monthly average. After I saw that I was getting nowhere with her, I requested to speak to a manager, in which one was not available. She said she would make a request to have a manager call me to provide more detail as to why my bill is more in July versus June. It appears that Georgia Public Service Commission has given Georgia Power tremendous leeway when it comes to billing Georgians and I feel like Georgia Power has taken advantage of this in efforts to build their nuclear power plants on the backs of Georgia's struggling tax payers. Especially since they are the only major providers in the states. They've partically monopolized the state's utility industry with the help of PSC. PSC should look out for the greater good of the public, but according to numerous complaint boards and pettitions, it seems like GA PSC bears the interest of the corporation. I hope this is not the case. Please bombard PSC's websites with complaints. A Commision Committee meeting is scheduled for 9/1/2011 and the electric utility issue is supposed to be addressed. Let's hope PSC hears the voice of the people.

I don't understand why a power company is allowed to double bill customers with no consequences as to stealing from customers. If the customer owes a bill he is penaltized if late payment is received . The customer has no way of collecting the money that was stolen from them for double billing during the months of June thru September. So who do the people that have been double billed complain to and what will be done to stop this stealing. Karma has a way of coming back and it can't happen too soon for these people. This is a great injustice to everyone that is being double billed and especially to ones that are on fixed incomes and can't afford the hikes. It would be great to be able to go off the grid and go completely solar. If enough people did this maybe Georgia Power would rethink their method of charging people for power.
late charge from automatic bank draft
I had set up a automatic bank draft for more than five years for my service charge. Never had i any problems with the company, until this month. Georgia power had sent me a letter stating that they were charging me 30$ late charge without any warning or alert. I had personally contacted them and they said that they couldn’t get any CASH from my bank. So i went to my bank and they told me that there were no errors or problems and that i had outstanding finance. then the bank provided a letter of proof. I then emailed it to Georgia power, but they said that they didn’t accept attatchment from emails even though they can still email me and tell me that they can’t get the letter i so many times continually send them over and over for a second time by mail and by driving all the way to one of their local offices, which aren’t even “locally” close by, and personally hand to them. And then one time when I had sent them a letter, they sent it back with NO reason whatsoever without my voided check that i had placed in there and made sure was in there. Of course they kept complaining to me that I had not sent in a letter and all that stuff. So, of course I had to continue sending in the letters one after another and now I’m just sick and tired of it all.
Extremely high bills!
Our bill four times what it was in april. This is outrageous! Our bill in april was $165, the bill we just received in august is $638! This is ridiculous! Our bills have gone up each month an average of $118 each month. We keep our thermostat locked on a set temp of 75 and only run it a few hours throughout the day and the bills still continue to go up substantially every month - it just doesn't add up. I called georgia power to complain and they said that we should keep our thermostat on 80 degrees and that our bills would continue to be elevated because they double their rates june 1st-september 30th. 80 degrees, really? Why bother running a/c then, that is not a comfortable inside temperature! And doubling your rates during the highest usage period of the year?! That seems like robbery to me! And of course they can get away with it because they are the only power company in this area. Unbelievable!
I just moved from Durham NC to Pooler GA and I got my first full month bill from Georgia Power which was more than double my monthly bill I have ever paid for the past 3year. I was bill $272.00 for 30days of electricity and I have paid $128.00-$130.00 monthly at duke energy for as long as I can remember. This is fraudulent and I can afford this
You don't live in NC anymore. What is cheap in one area of the country will not be in another.
I agree with all of these comments and it is amazing to me how so many of us are being taken advantage of by these crooks. My position is what are we going to do about it? I work for the county and do not get paid a lot. I live by myself and I pay close to $200 per month and it continues to increase. I looked a t the bill and we are not only paying for electric usage we are also paying for other causes. Look at your bill and you will see. Let me give all of you a run down. This was for the billing period from May 3, 2015 - June 2, 2015. *Current Services-$169.75*Environmental Compliance Cost-$12.51*Nuclear Construction Cost Recovery-$10.79*Municipal Franchise Fee-$5.67*Sales Tax-$13.92 - Total Bill- $212.64. What in the world is going on? This is abusive, unethical, and unscrupulous. First of all I am living by myself so how is my bill $169.75 in the first place and how is it that they want me to go from the $167.75 charges to paying $212.64? That brings me to my next point, why are consumers being forced to deal with such a treacherous company? Why is the government forcing us to do business with monopoly that does not care about the welfare of consumers? We continue to give and give and pay and pay and they continue to take and take and take. Enough is enough and something has to be done about this. When I dealt with Jackson EMC I never had to worry about these issues. As consumers we should be able to select the type of company we want to deal with, we should be able to choose our electric company. The way I look at it if you do not stand for a good cause, if you do not stand for something you will fall for anything. These prices and bad practices by GA Power must stop. As consumers we cannot continue to carry this heavy load. It is time for a petition against GA Power.
There are just the two of us in a over fifty-five community. This is our first year with GA Power and since May our bill has tripled! Despite our early attempts to avoid the steady increases such raising our thermostat setting, installing more double paned windows and a sky light. The increases continued nevertheless. Who do you turn to when GA Power is the only game in town in Duluth, GA? They can charge what they want, no one can prove it and they know it. We also have a gas oven and both work during the and make sure most everything is off. This is an outrageous attack on the elderly (who seem to get these bill increases). They arbitrarily raise prices, bill the helpless and use their power to deny comfort to those who refuse to pay overcharges.
This happens EVERY YEAR! They feel that it's ok for them to STEAL from us because it's time for GA POWER to give themselves a bonus!
If they were a honest company they would not do this. I've called and have been told the same thing, turn the temp to 80...when I asked them if the A/C was set to 80 in their office they would not answer.
Then they had to nerve to say that it costs more in the summer...it doesn't. It cost the same year round for them to produce the power. But how can they meet the bonus payouts they have to pay to themselves if they don't rip off the people that keep them in business?
The only thing you can do is go solar...or wind, and when they raise the price...turn it off!
They are dishonest...and deserve no respect at all...even the people that keep the lines up are crooks!
PEOPLE ARE TURNING OFF THEIR HEAT AND AIR FOR WHOLE MONTHS AT A TIME JUST TO PROVE GEORGIA POWER IS CROOKED, FRAUDULENT AND OVERCHARGING PEOPLE ESPECIALLY THE ELDERLY AND THEY'RE TURNING OFF THE HEAT AND AIR TACTIC HAS ENTRAPED GEORGIA POWER AND HAS REVEAL THAT GEORGIA POWER IS NOW CAUGHT UP IN THE WEBS OF THEIR OWN LIES. WHERE IS THE PENTEGON AND THE WHITE HOUSE WHY DON'T THEY COME TO THE RESCUE OF THE ELDERLY AND OTHER PEOPLES OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA.? THEY DON'T GIVE A CRAP, THEN YOU GOT THESE HYPOCRITES THAT KEEP PAYING THE BILL NO MATTER HOW HIGH IT IS AS OPPOSED TO HOW LITTLE POWER THEY'VE USED, WHILE THEY MAKE IGNORANT STATEMENTS THAT INSINUATE THAT PEOPLE ARE JUST USING MORE POWER THAN LAST MONTH LIKE GEORGIA POWER SAYS THEY ARE, "JUST PAY YOUR BILL" . THESE ARE THE SAME DUMB STUPID (AS IN IGNORANT) PEOPLE THAT ARE 1000% (YES I WROTE ONE THOUSAND PERCENT) ARE GONNA BE THE FIRST ONES TO RECEIVE THE MARK OF THE BEAST AND MANY OF THEM PROBABLY ALREADY HAVE RECEIVED THE MARK, AND THEY'LL BE THE VERY ONES TO TELL THE PEOPLE THAT REFUSE THE MARK, "AHH JUST RECEIVE THE MARK AND STOP COMPLAINING", AND WHEN YOU REFUSE, "MARK" MY WORDS, THEY WILL BE THE FIRST ONE TO TURN YOU IN, RAT YOU OUT TO THE ANTICHRIST AUTHORITIES YOU CAN BANK ON THAT MY FRIENDS, BANK ON IT INDEED. This company has been over charging my elderly mom for a few years now and it's only getting worst, she was not home for nearly a month and her bill was well over 200$ Again, while her neighbor in the apartment in the same unit was home all month and their bill was under 100, and other neighbors bills were jacked up also. My mom was nor i was home for nearly a whole month and upon our return our power blacked out during an ice storm, also my mom turned the heat off for about a week put her health in danger at 79 years of age, and her bill is still well over 230 dollar, and she paid the previous month and only owed 40 dollar after paying most of it. This kind of dishonesty has been going on for a very long time now nearly three years and when ever she pays the whole amount they still overcharge her the following month. 240$ - 390$ a month with barely any electricity being use to bring the bill down, is a crooked operation, that takes advantage of the elderly.
I paid close to $700 in less than three weeks to Georgia Power eventhough I cook maybe twice a month for about 30 minutes, I live by myself with only one tv that is unplugged when I am not at the apartment, never turned on central Heating/AC ( I use portables for each), and lately, I shut off the breakers for the stove and hot water taking shower at the gym instead, but electric bill is still outrageously too high. I tried and tried to talk to someone who would care at GA-Power but all I got is more shocking bills. It is shame that the company takes advantage of people especially in this economic environment. Sprint used to rob it's own customers the same way as Ga-Power, and then 600, 000 people deserted them in one quarter plus the bad publicity permanenly sank them (thanx to Metro Pcs and other low flat-rate wireless carriers, robbery by cell-phone companies are no more) I live in an area where there are a lot of Mexicans and my first thought was that the company is probably in the habit of overcharging certain demographics. There is no question that Georgia Power is overcharging and getting away with it all over the place. It is wrong and it should be illegal. Look at Apple: there is no overcharging at iTunes or the App Store while even holding to your credit card information and their price is low and reasonable. Why can't Georgia Power and others do the same considering their monopoly. Criminals and greedy people run some of the utility companies.
I had same problem, I turned my A/C off period and didn't use washer/dryer for whole month. It only made a $25 difference. Doesn't make any sense. I don't think they are sending their meter readers to take readings. All bills are based on your average pattern.
cash only
We have been Georgia Power customers for over 11 years. Not once has our service been interrupted. They draft from our checking account at the end of each month. My husband is paid once a month. When things began to get a little slow for us, we contacted Georgia Power to ask about having the payment due date extended by 5-7 days, in order to ensure available funds.
They would not work with us. We STILL were able to ensure timely payment. In 11 years, we have twice had insufficient funds and now they have told us we are cash only. We can't go back to the days of snail mail and even mail a check! We can't pay on line, as we have been blocked by bill matrix. We actually have to PHYSICALLY take cash to a payment location, which is no where NEAR our home! We both have over 700 credit scores, work hard to keep them there, work hard to communicate and avert any negative financial problems and yet we are reduced to this?
When we contacted customer service, we were unsuccessful in any attempt to try and resolve the issue. They told us that pretty much the "buck stops with them" and that ALL POLICIES ARE IMPLEMENTED BY THE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION. NOT TRUE! The public service commission only approves or disapproves the policies that GA POWER implements... The worst part about this: They are the only utility in this area... can we say MONOPOLY? Any ideas on what we can do? It's just not feasible to physically drive 40 minutes one way to stand in line and pay cash for a bill, when we could just as easily send it electronically! No other utility companies service this area!

electricity bill
My power bill has increased tremendously. According to the bill, I have used 1000 more kw this same time than last year. This seems very unlikely. I have spray foam insulation throughout my house, my thermostat is set at 75, my filters are cleaned regularly and we rarely use the oven in the summer. I have heard many people complain that their bills have also gone up tremendously. My bill went from 237.32 last month to 643.56 this month. I realize it is hotter, but not that much higher. I have been told by many other customers that Georgia Power increases their rates during the summer. They have a monopoly on electricity and it's time something be done about it.

Same here bill in June -- August runs over 700.00 we keep thermostat at 78, have Ga Power come out an do a free audit check to see why bill was so high could not tell me why, they are taking us to the poor house
failure to install service
I called to start service with Georgia Power 6/24/11 to request service @ 3866 Castle Pines Mobile homePark. I stated that I need to have electric service at lot#165. I was told it would be connected @ the address given by the 1st of July unless Iwas called later that same day to say It could not be done. I went up the the mobile home on the seprate...

I have been charged a $150 deposit now for requesting extensions on my bills. My power has never been cut off, I always pay my bills on the arranged days, and I always confirm with the customer service representative what fees or negative feedback will be placed on my account due to the requests. I have never been notified this was impending. I also was told when I signed up for service there would only be a $90 deposit to receive service. When I called to discuss with them and see how I was responsible for something that was added when I'd made sure to see any penalties for my actions and this was never mentioned I was told "if you don't like it, all we lose is a bad credit customer... we're the only electric provider in your area, I hear generators are pretty cheap." I asked to speak to her supervisor (she is a manager) and she told me she was the only person I'd ever speak to, she was the end all be all for me, and that even if I tried to call back and talk to a different manager, she'd flag my account and interrupt any attempt in communications because I don't deserve to waste anyone else's time as such a bad credit person. Again. I pay my bills. I've never been disconnected, and though I have had one disconnect notice (from last December), I made an arrangement for that balance, and paid it off. Between not being informed during every phone conversation I've had with them this was happening and the service I've received when trying to figure this out, I'm not sure what to do.

I received a $150 deposit after service was started. I recently moved due to an illness. I downsized everything from the home to my personal bills. I had not received an income in 6 months. I kept up with my bills by the skin of my teeth through savings and unfortunately my credit cards. My credit score had gone down but I was still in a good range. When I called to have service connected, no deposit was required. My first bill came out and it was $127. That sounds great, only my cost of moving was over $1000. This bill came out about 26 days after I moved in. Any deposits that I had coming back to me didn't come back until 30-45 days and so I paid other services that did not have any type of extensions first. It did not state that a deposit would be required for making an extension anywhere. The next month, I received a deposit of $150. It stated it was a past due bal of the deposit. Hmmmm. HOW? Well I will only be in this home for 6 months. Therefore, I will forgo the deposit by continuing to pay for service. Nothing more nothing less. On the bright side of things, for all of those struggling, Be patient. I am a distributor for a company who offers electricity services. GA will soon become a state with deregulated energy for electric. We missed it by one vote this year. It will happen without a doubt. That will be when GA Power and Jefferson Electric get their minds together and start to look at things in a more compassionate light for the consumers. Because the industry is monopolized right now, they have the ability to do what they want. Don't stress about it. Do what you can. Things always get better. I know from experience. In the meantime if you need gas services, check out what we have to offer and when electric services become available, you can simply have one bill for both among our other great services. You also can earn credits towards your bill for referring others up to 100%. Ask me how! GA Power nor Jefferson Power will ever reward their customers. https://pcarter.mystream.com/
I've been charge a higher deposit because of my credit. I was hurt on the job and my income had decrease. I had to go on a payment arrangement from a $330.00 past due, to a sky rocket fee of $840.00; this is unbelievable. They said that my deposit is $544.00, because of my credit. This shouldn't be a factor if someone is having hardship and can prove it. I wish there were other electricity companies that can take customers from Georgia Power. I've notice when winter season is here the bill goes extremely high and I use the same energy as in the summer. I have only two bodies in my home and we're at work most of the time, so how in the heck is my bill running high. This is ridiculous and something needs to be done about GP. My daughter is moving into this property and apparently, the other residents had left an unpaid bill. GP said that my daughter deposit will be $330.00 for deposit and that it will be credit back. I don't see why her deposit is high when her bill is zero. It seems to me that they are trying to get her to pay someone else's bill, how unfair is that. I'm so frustrated with this company because GP didn't used to be like this, charging higher deposits and increasing monthly payment, when we as the customer are monitoring their own resources usages. GP is becoming a scam!
I also lost my income. I was shocked that after living without electricity for 9 days due to lack of income that in order to restore service, they would require another $150 in addition to the already $150 deposit on my account. They split the $150 into 3 $50 payments. If electricity was disconnected due to circumstances beyond my control, why would Georgia Power add to my burden of keeping electricity service on by charging me a whole lot more as a punishment for having a financial crisis. I do not understand how this is legal. How can a customer be charged extra for not having money making the situation worse, making the crisis harder to overcome?
Thought-provoking article ! I learned a lot from the info . Does anyone know where my assistant might be able to get a fillable GA T-8 document to use ?
I have read numerous of the posted complaints. I agree with some of the statements from each post. What I think should happen, every consumer should have several power suppliers to choose from, much like the gas suppliers. When a company controls the only source of something, it becomes a monopoly. Often times, they add charges that otherwise would not be added, if they were competing. So, why not have several power suppliers in every area to rid monopoly? I have made several request to Georgia Power, to provide me copies of the regulatory calibrations that is used to justify their meter reading. They have failed to do so. When a measuring device or monitoring device is used, it should be met with a calibration device to determine its accuracy. Much like a police radar. It has to be calibrated daily to determine the accuracy before use. I would not expect a meter to be calibrated daily, but, I would expect to see at least an annual calibration. Please know, anything that is human designed may malfunction. I also understand the expense of running a business. Employers of Georgia Power are expecting to get a check so they can pay their power bill as well. Georgia Power has a ton of cost we know about and even more that we don't know about. But, I think if we can create a market where we have multiple choices in all areas, some of Georgia Power expenses will dissipate. Thank for allowing me to share my view on this issue.
Everyone needs to try to start learning to be able to adapt to living without modern age electricity because when the crap finally hits the ceiling there won't be any Georgia power or any other modern day power companies or any other kind of modern day power sources. People, its coming and soon so stop relying and depending on these money hungry giants and start learning to survive without them, they are just filling your mind up with thoughts and feelings that make you think you can't live without there services which is not true, if you would just look a few generations back in time we did just fine and as a matter a fact a lot better then in a lot of ways then we are now. I say to you learn to live without it because so you will have to.
For over 8-months I have been getting automated programmed calls from multiple numbers all belonging to Georgia Power. I complained to them to ne avail. Every week I will get 20 or more calls a days, all exactly one hour apart.
I have been receiveng automated programmed calls from multiple numbers at Georgia Power that sometime occur every hour 20 times per day. It has been going on for over 8-months. I contacted the company but they said it wasn't their fault.
I have also been with ga power for years and I have been making arrangements bc I am now unemployed but never been disconnected and make my payments by the arraigned date. if I am struggling to make my normal payments how in the hell do they expect me to pay another 150 also? making my bill $480
Georgia Power can and does what it wants because they monopolized the electricity production. They know that you can't go anywhere else so they don't have to provide "customer service" because their attitude is we just cut you off. GA Power is a perfect example of a Republican ran organization with the backing or their constituents or what they like to call free enterprise. The same thing what the banks were doing with fees on overdraft and robosigning foreclosures until Obama stepped in. So if you are Republican or voted Republican you don't deserve to complain because that is exactly what you voted for. Do you think the GA Power cares about your financial situation or your payment arrangements? Quite frankly, what exactly are you going to do about it but complain about it?
GA Power will continue to do business, grow and you will continue to pay those deposits like you have until someone steps in like Obama did with the banks and forced them to play by a rule book. They will do as they please.
Also, if you check your bill they charge like an additional $5+ for the build of a new power plant that all customers are financing. Sorry to rain on your parade
Electricity bill is too high
Ever since AMLI @ Nothwinds changed to Georgia Power, I am getting very high bills. For the past one year i was paying around $60. Now my bill has started with $93 in the first month and then $179 and then $140. Not sure what is going on. When i called them they told it is because of heater and advised me to keep it in auto. After doing that also my electricity bill is too high

I'am writing this complaint in reference to the budget billing plan. I was mailed a $929.48 bill in March. I was not aware that I must pay the amount of $183.00 monthly even if I only use $80.00-$90.00 a mo. on power. Georgia power waited five months and mailed a bill for $929.48 this is so unfair, I 'am a disabled Veteran I'am also on oxygen 24 hrs. I asked a rep. where is My money going she was unable to explain to Me. On 5/7/2013 I was mailed information on the flat bill plan. upon reading the info. It's no different from budget billing just a different wording. flat billing, upon getting on budget plan nothing was ever explained, they just sign one up. I would have appreciated a letter in the mail @ least the next mo. letting Me know I must pay that amount. on 3/11/2013 I was mailed a letter stating that if payment arrangments were not made, A load limiting device will be placed on meter. only to operate the medical equipment. It will not allow full power. I'am on a fixed income and can't afford food. this is very unfair.
I am not a very happy customer since we have gone to the smart meter. My bill as almost doubled since installed. I am seriously think of going solar. We are paying way to much for a bill when I have not changed a thing in my home. I've even tried to cut back on the amount I use and nothing is working.
service charge
I requested new service on 01/03/11. While this new service was on, I had requested that the other property be left on and not turned off until I called back. The guy I spoke with told me ok. Well, they turned off the old property anyway without my permission. No surprise. They are now charging me 30 dollars to reinstate it AND gave me a new account number. The supervisor I spoke with on the phone said I had to pay it anyway. It is a scam to get more money out of consumers/me.
I want the 30 dollar service charge removed for their error.
bill
I recieved a bil for 320$ in the middle of winter. It was cheaper in the heat of the summer. I called and emailed them and they said it was bc of the unusualy cold winter month, thing is i did not change my settings it lowerd them there no ecuse they can come up with it went up by 150$ for no reason Georgia needs a new power company, and a fair one. Georgia Power has a monopoly on electricty in Georgia. They can charge whatever they want and they do.

I have been making payments online to Ga power from the same bank accounts (2) as long as we've had these two bank accounts. I have made 3 payments back to back, 4/1 = $280, 4/9 = $300, 4/11 = $242.04, and all of a sudden they say the info that was entered, a YEAR or more ago, is now wrong. They are charging us nsf's and $150 dep for those returned items. I checked w/ Bank of America and spoke w/ many people, and departments, and Ashley verified that the amounts show in transit through a 3rd party, they were debited but not returned. That Ga power keyed in the wrong information.
Danielle, in collections at Ga power, informed me that the last number of the routing number was not entered - she is who I spoke with FIRST, before contacting the bank.
After the bank phone call I called Ga power back. I spoke with Tara at ext 33115. I'm sure that call is recorded and it can be retrieved from them.
She stated that they intentionally drop the last number for security reasons - WHAT? Then she put me on hold for a long period of time and came back with an excuse that I transposed the routing and account numbers. Again, WHAT? Why would I change anything that had been entered LONG LONG ago? Isn't the purpose of them having the page saved so we don't have to constantly keep looking it up?
I am so appalled at this company - we, as consumers, have zero choices and apparently they can take our money any way they please?
She very bluntly told me that this was no error of theirs and no fees would be reversed, then I bluntly cursed her.
THREE excuses, NO owning up to their mistakes, ZERO compensation, ZERO consumer rights. They are thieves and this type of practice needs to be dealt with please.
rate hike -2011
I guess Georgia Power has its way. What did I tell you that PSC has them in their pocket. Now the rate increase is 14 days. Wow this sucks, trying to get more money out of consumers when the economy are tough. I guess it is time to go to budget billing. This is absurd to have a rate hike before Xmas and want the rate hike wtihin 2 weeks but when time comes they want their money they don;t give consumers time. I guess Georgia Power Exces are greedy. Right now even though the bill are going up $10.00 and with other fees it is about $13, 00 rate hike. Lovely. I don;t see how they are still the lowest. Wrong.
Bills to rise $10.76 a month for residential customers * Utility revenues to rise $562 million in 2011 * Customers to pay for new nuclear plants NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Georgia utility regulators
have approved a 10 percent rate hike for customers of Southern
Co's (SO.N) Georgia Power utility starting in January, a
company spokeswoman told Reuters on Tuesday. Bills for the average residential customer using about
1, 000 kilowatt hours per month will increase by about 10
percent, or about $10.76 a month. The rate increases would increase the utility's revenue by
$562 million in 2011, $189.7 million in 2012 and $92.6 million
in 2013, spokeswoman Carol Boatright said. Even with the increase, Boatright noted Georgia Power's
rates would remain below the national average. The rate hike will allow Georgia Power, Southern's biggest
unit, to recover funds already spent on environmental controls,
infrastructure upgrades, the addition of three 800-megawatt
natural gas fired Units 4, 5 and 6 at Plant McDonough in 2012
and 2013, and smart meters, among other things, Boatright
said. In addition to the rate increases, Georgia Power will also
add a nuclear rider to customers' bills in January to recover
financing costs on funds borrowed for the construction of two
new 1, 100 MW nuclear power reactors at Plant Vogtle. The nuclear rider will add an additional $3.73 a month to
the average residential bill for a total recovery of $218
million in 2011. It will boost residential bills by $1.44 a
month or $91 million in 2012, and $1.50 a month or $97 million
in 2013. Geogia Power hopes to get a combined construction and
operating license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
for the new reactors by the end of 2011. The new units are
projected to enter service in 2016 and 2017. The new reactors will cost Georgia Power about $6.1 billion
for its 47.7 percent stake in the project. The other owners are
Oglethorpe Power Corp (30 percent), Municipal Electric
Authority of Georgia (22.7 percent) and Dalton Utilities (1.6
percent).
Georgia power Execs are jus greedy this power plant thing is a lie and a scam to get more money from southerners already having a tough time. Our last bill was $500 and thats after we started using ways to save energy Georgia power is full of ###.
The $10 is a lie, I just checked my bill and it is up $40.
I just compared my usage from last year 1/20/2010 which was 3242 kwh and I was charged $298.16
this year on 1/20/2011 the usage was 1968 kwh and the bill for this was $210
going on the rate charged in 2010 this years 1/20 bill should be $170.
So Georgia Power is totally ripping us customers off and it's ok!

Georgia Power customer Service is Full of BS. I have been calling the past two month to fix my meter readings. I have been paying for mix power reading for almost a year now. Every time I called customer service they do not have good information all they say is call back with in 3 days. It gets me beyond frustrated when such a huge organization like GA Power does not have a good bridge to communicate with customers. Who I should call to get my problem fixed... Not customer services employees or their clueless supervisor...
