As a new hire at CarMax Sterling, VA, I was given the most difficult tasks right from the start, while others hired after me were assigned easier jobs and provided more thorough training. It felt like I was being set up to fail from day one.
I was micromanaged and constantly scrutinized, while others were barely held accountable for their mistakes. When I raised concerns with HR about the unequal treatment, instead of resolving the issue, they became defensive and accusatory — with absolutely no accountability from management.
The entire atmosphere felt more like a psych ward than a workplace — chaotic, inconsistent “rules,” and nonstop blame-shifting.
Employees are also expected to wear branded outerwear, and I had to buy their branded jacket as a requirement of employment if working there. No reimbursement, no choice — I can imagine how much they are getting back while employees would need additional work clothes while working there.
The so-called manager I was assigned to was completely unprofessional, irresponsible, and lacked both leadership skills and integrity. In my experience, they actively contributed to the toxic, biased environment rather than improving it.
I also witnessed rushed vehicle prep, disorganized operations, and a clear obsession with appearances over actual quality. Nothing I saw would make me trust the condition of the cars being sold.
In my opinion, CarMax Sterling operates on control, favoritism, and cover-ups — not integrity, not fairness, and certainly not respect.
Recommendation: Strongly NOT recommended!
