CarMax Selling a vehicle

On August 4 2022 I went to Carmax in Pleasant Hill, CA to have my 2018 Ram 2500 Laramie assessed for a cash value. It had 31,312 miles on it. I received an offer of $48,000. I let the 7 day offer lapse by a day and went back on August 12, 2022 with only 11 more miles of the vehicle. Since the offer lapsed, they had to retake pics and reassess the value, but one of the employees said it would likely come back as the same offer. About 20 minutes later, someone handed the employee the original offer that I walked in with instead of the new offer. So I was under the assumption that I was getting $48,000 and I decided to move forward with the sale. After another roughly 30 minutes of dealing with my title because it was out of state, the employee called a higher echelon person at a different Carmax location to confirm something and that person told him that the new offer was $32,000. So a day late and only an additional 11 miles of the truck, they’re trying to rip me off by $16,000.

Desired outcome: Nothing, Carmax will never receive my business.

CarMax Payoff - lack of customer service follow through and follow up

Good afternoon,

My name is April Rillo

On May 28th of 2022 I started the process at my local bank of paying off my car loan with Car Max Auto Finance, I refinanced through my banking institution. I contacted Car Max customer representatives and first was given the wrong mailing address for the check to be sent to. Months later I was still getting the information from Car Max stating that my upcoming payment was coming up.

I contacted again at the beginning of July (around July 17th) and inquired as to why they hadn't processed my payoff check yet, it had been months at this point. This is when the CSR informed us that we needed to mail the check instead to a Georgia address. The bank voided the payoff check that went to the wrong state and send out a new check. It has almost been a month since we mailed out the second check and I'm still getting emails stating that my upcoming payment is late.

My banking institution and myself shouldn't have to be making 5-6 separate calls to CSR's trying to understand why it's taking over 3 and a half months to make this happen.

I'm extremely disappointed and frustrated with the lack of customer service assistance throughout this process, I'm frustrated that I'm paying my car payment through my bank's refinancing options and still receiving past due alerts from Car Max. I'm frustrated that what should be a simple and common place process has turned into 3 and a half months of incorrect information, lack of service assistance, and 5-6 separate calls from myself and the bank trying to get this process taken care of.

Desired outcome: If Car Max could make a call to loan specialist Taylor Cauldwell at DACU to answer:1) Whether the check has been received by the Georgia payoff location2) How long it's going to take for Car Max to process this check and apply to my account

CarMax Used car loan

I co-signed on a vehicle for my daughter who got behind on her bills due to Covid. She called Carmax finance to make payment arraignments and inquired about the effect it would have on my credit as co-signer. They assured her they wouldn’t put it on my credit without giving me an opportunity to pay. She proceeded to make the payment arrangement and they did not withdrawal the funds. This is in a recorded phone call. Fast forward to me getting a notification that I have a delinquent payment on my credit report. I never received a call asking for payment or informing me it was behind. Not one. The supervisor admitted they had not called or contacted me and didn’t know why but also didn’t care. They refused to take it off my report even though I paid it in full immediately upon finding out from a second hand source. I am furious. My credit score dropped 80 pts and they don’t care. How can you do this to someone without notifying them or contacting them first for payment? I will never use your company again. I am telling everyone I know what you did and to shop elsewhere.

Desired outcome: Remove delinquent mark from my credit report

CarMax Tires

I recently purchased a vehicle from Carmax. The tires appeared to be worn so we had the manager check them in which they stated they met their standards. We didn't agree as we could clearly see the tires needed to be replaced so we took the vehicle to Discount Tires for a tire inspection. Well...tire inspection returns stating all four wheels need to be replaced and the two front tires have chunks of tire missing. We have notified Carmax and they are still stating the tires on this vehicle meet their standards. It's extremely frustrating to have to deal with something like this. Carmax doesn't haggle with prices and yet still refuses to replace tires. Clearly greed is more important than a person's safety. Unfortunately, we will be returning the car because I don't want to give a company business who is not willing to meet vehicle safety standards. Yes, we can buy new tires for the vehicle but I shouldn't have too at the price I paid for this vehicle. It's been about 12 years since I purchased a vehicle and this experience has reminded me of why I kept my other vehicle so long.

Desired outcome: New tires

CarMax Catalytic converters, gas lines and oxygen sensors totaling $9800 were stolen.

I received an appraisal online for carmax to purchase my truck. Took my truck in for inspection. I didn't have the proper paperwork for carmax to purchase it. I was told to park in the second lot and I could come back with the title and receive the money. While I kept trying to contact the store I didn't get any response. On July 22, 2022 got a phone call my truck would be impounded. I went the next day to pick up it up only to find out that the catalytic converters were gone, 3 gas lines stolen, 2 oxygen sensors gone. I have an estimate from my mechanic for $9,500. Carmax wants to take no responsibility for this. I can't believe they won't even talk to me. I am going to file complaints with anyone I can. I am also calling the news

Desired outcome: I would like my deductible paid and them to purchase the truck for the amount they promised me.

CarMax We were Sold a damaged vehicle

We purchased a 2010 G37 Infiniti from the Carmax located at 4400 S Interstate 35 Austin TX 78745 in May 2021. The salesman raved about this cars condition and it being accident free. After registering the car, we later found out that the car was in an accident and that the damage was rated as moderate. This is very deceptive and very unprofessional. We called and talked to a sales person who stated a manager would call us back, but to date we have not heard back.

Desired outcome: We would like to sell the car back to them for a full refund.

CarMax Purchase of 2016 honda hrv 06/29/2022

On 06/29/2022 I purchased a 2016 Honda HRV EX from Lancaster Carmaxx. I purchased this car online so the first opportunity I had to look at the vehicle was this date of purchase. The car was inspected the day of purchase. The first thing that I noticed was that the vehicle had white buff marks all over the headlight assembly and the sides of the vehicle which there is damage to the headlight assembly. And a tear on the dash in the leather. When I got into the vehicle from the dealership within my first 10 miles my low pressure light gauge came on. I turned around and went back to the dealership to report this and they filled the tires with air and sent me on my way. When I got home I did a full inspection on the vehicle. The rear breaks and calipers were worn down so bad you could not even see them. They were so bad that I could hear them squeaking. I knew then that this vehicle had had an inspection sticker slapped on it. I popped the hood. None of my fluids were capped off as then I knew the cut corners with this vehicle. I returned the vehicle on 07/18/22 as that was the earliest I could get the car in. They agreed to replace the front two tires and replace the break pads and the calipers. They are refusing to fix the headlight assembly due to it not being anything wrong with them. The issue here is that it is obvious that state inspection was not conducted properly and I believe there is deception in their dealings with consumers. How did that vehicle pass inspection. I spoke to the service department today 07/21/2022 and was told that they are not going to fix the headlights. I am furious. I was also told that I should have just bought a new car. If they are not willing to correct the issues I am returning the car. Investigations need to be done at Carmaxx of Lancaster's Inspection process.

Desired outcome: New headlight assembly and tear fix on dash. This is a major purchase for me. I want to feel good about it.

Jul 21, 2022 11:25 am EDT

I wanted to also mention that every other day until 07/18/2022 the tire kept loosing air and had to put air in the tires every other day.

Resolved

Two days after writing my review about Carmaxx and my experience, the Sales Manager called me from that Location. They buffed out the wax on my head light assembly, fixing the gash in my dash, giving me another oil change, a tire spoke cap and are re-doing the state inspection on my vehicle. Very ethical, would you not agree? But why. As much as I appreciate them making this right, I still do not recommend purchasing anything from Carmaxx UNLESS you know your cars. Thank you Carmaxx for being Ethical.

CarMax Defective Vehicle

I have had problems with this vehicle since 2 months after I got it. It randomly turns off and will not start until some time later. This has been going on for months and I have had it taken to Carmax twice to get fixed and both times they did not fix the issue. At this point, this is a defective vehicle.

I can provide bills of repairs and emails of communications.

Desired outcome: I wish to have total reimbursement or a replacement vehicle.

CarMax Customer Service needs to improve

I was setting up a purchase and was frustrated because the store was not aligned with the call center. The call center set me up with the purchase, placed in financing and scheduled a time to come in store to complete documentation and down payment. I arrive and I am waiting 40 minutes out of my appointment window to even view the car I paid to have transferred in. As my frustration builds because I rearranged my day to pick up a driver to assist with driving my other vehicle for the rushed purchase, I am told I will not be able to pick up the vehicle same day because the delay had the registry close. I handle all suggested processes and as I leave the manager loudly asks the sales rep working with me if she is okay as if I was yelling or threatening. I asked him why she wouldn't be okay and why I was never asked about my experience. There was no response, the employees just gathered and I walked out. I later returned to speak with another manager about my experience and was told he would make a forced apology for the actions of the other but this is not how you do business.

Desired outcome: Open to suggestion

CarMax Selling lemon vehicle

I initially purchased a vehicle from CarMax July 2020. From the inception of purchase until approximately May 2021, I had continuous issues with my Buick Enclave. My vehicle was sent to a Buick Dealership for the same issue over and over and finally after going back and forth with CarMax, they agreed to buy my vehicle back from me and reimburse me the payments I had made on the vehicle. At that time, I should have walked away but instead, I allowed them to put me into another vehicle with a 3rd row and it was not a vehicle i chose but rather the only one with a 3rd row. Fast forward now exactly 1 year later, and the vehicle I purchased, 2019 Nissan Pathfinder with only 60,000 miles (as of today) is in the shop and needing a new alternator. It blows my mind that I could have issues with 2 vehicles back to back from CarMax. I called and spoke with the Service Manager and during my conversation when I expressed my frustration and told him I wanted them to take this vehicle back, he apologized and told me he has had this conversation with several other customers in the past who have had this issue. To my surprise, there has been other individuals that have had repeated issues with vehicles and have had to have CarMax buy them back! He admitted that they wouldn't tell this to customers normally but that he was just being honest with me! I know that dealerships do not have control over when vehicles have issues but the fact that I have had repeated issues with vehicles that I have purchased from CarMax is very concerning. What is even worse is rather than taking my vehicle back to CarMax to get checked, I chose to take it to a mechanic from the warranty list because I do not trust the technicians at CarMax due to my prior issues with my other vehicle. In a 2 year time span, I have had issues with 2 different vehicles I purchased from CarMax. Similar to the last vehicle I had, I just made my car payment and am now without my own vehicle.

Desired outcome: I want them to: (1) buy this vehicle back from me; (2) a refund for the warranty amount of $150; and (3) reimbursement for the payments I have made on my vehicle.

CarMax Car

Hello,

I purchased a 2013 Ford Focus on 3/29/2022. When I first purchased the car I took it to the Ford Dealership to get a diagnostic done on it, and everything with an exception of the Driver toe link checked out. I took the car to carmax to have it fixed (which was ordeal) but they fixed it. Not even a week or 2 later the battery died , took it back to carmax on 4/8/2022 and they replaced it along with an electronic steering gear assembly, because the wrench light came on as well. I let them know at that time that one day I was parked at a car wash put the car in reverse and the car wouldn't reverse that has happened on more than one occasion , and the car would not start. They found nothing wrong.

Fast forward to this weekend Sunday the 10th went to get in the car and the car would not start had to call AAA for the 2nd time for this car, the battery died again and it was just replaced. The guy said drive it around it's a new battery not sure why the battery is draining. The car was fine , today the car has died again today. I am done with this car what do I need to do to give it back. I will get a lawyer if need be, there is no way in 3 months I have this many issues with a car and I keep bringing it back. I have to call AAA for the 3rd time for this car today and hopefully I can make it to the carmax, but changing the battery obviously isn't the problem and I no longer want the burden of a car that shouldn't have been sold to anyone . Thank you for your time. Andrea Cooper VIN 1FADP3R46DL126040

Desired outcome: I want my money back for the car - the 3 months I had it and I want to give this car back. It is a lemon and should not be sold to anyone, or I want to trade it in for something else comparable .

Another update, the radio has since died on this car, I am trying to sale this car, but can't get it to work long enough to sale it. Recently the car batter now will not keep a charge this is the 2nd occurrence of this happening. They have it now and have to tow it back to the Ford dealership, interesting enough I took it to Ford 1st, and they couldn't figure it out. Took it back to CarMax just so they can take it back to ford. I just want my money back this car is a money pit and they sold it wrapped up nicely. 7 months in and I have cried and cannot find any help. . This has been the worst experience I have had with purchasing a car.

CarMax General lack of caring by everyone

I purchased a car on July 4,2022 in Indianapolis, Indiana. We left my old car there so ne and my husband could try out the new car together. The salesman said that was fine. My husband came to get the car with his truck and trailer ( mind you we live 2 hours away and gas prices are terrible) it was 109 degrees and my husband couldn’t get the car loaded. No one Helped him and he had to cone home overcome with heat. He went back made the 2 hour drive and his hitch had been stolen, his spud wrench and blue vice that his deceased dad gave him . We called carnax to see about cameras and report this and no one could help us. Finally me and him went back again with a hitch and the truck and not one staff member even asked if we needed help! The car had to be rigged up as the exhaust had gotten lodged up under the car and wouldn’t start. At least 10-12 staff members stood outside the service area watching but not anyone asked if we needed help. I’ll pay the $50 and have my vehicle fixed if needed under warranty . I may not have gotten this vehicle there but I bought one the week before and the human thing to do would be ask if we needed help. Couldn’t even tell us if there were cameras. My husband didn’t want to call the police but most reputable places would care if someone or an employee was a theif. I’m watching them all walk to their cars right by us and not one word. I am a nurse and I’m sure if my customer service skills were like theirs it would not be appreciated. Honestly they have the things to have gotten the car on the traiker much easier yet not even an are you ok . Staff even drove right beside us and looked right at us , not anything . I am so disgusted in this staff , terrible customer service! And this occurred on their property. Just putting this out there , I know if one of them were my patient and I ignored them would make every one of the rude , disrespectful staff members mad!

Desired outcome: I would like an apology for the rude behavior and the money they said they were giving me for my lunch as they took my lunch receipt. This was very costly ( over $300) in trips back and forth . My lunch paid as promised at least

CarMax My car is broke down and Eligible under my MaxCare for rental assistance but was denied

My car broke down as I got it to a shop in time to be diagnosed and sent over for a rental car over the weekend. I spoke with a representative at Carmax Max care which told me that I was eligible and all they needed was for someone to contact them from the dealership. Once contacting them and doing everything that was supposed to be done I still was not processed. Now I am without a vehicle until Tuesday which today is only Friday due to the holidays. I can not get to work and am without A vehicle due to Max care not properly handling the situation which has been taken place since 7 o’clock this morning. I need reimbursed for the Ubers and rise that I have to pay for from now until Tuesday due to the neglect of Maxcare. This is very inconvenient and I need for someone to call me immediately to handle this situation.

Desired outcome: I need a vehicle while my car is being fixed. After Confirming that I was eligible I still never received the processing number for me to receive a replacement vehicle through my max care

CarMax Defective car / shipping refund requested

Carmax:

I am requesting (edit: demanding) a full refund for the full shipping I paid for a defective car

1. The car’s safety ⚠️‼️feature system was not working. Feature: “lane alert” & “lane assist” was not functioning / working at all (I even immediately scheduled an appointment w/toyota regarding this) (which I can get verification for if necessary) (I ended up canceling the appointment, deciding I would return the defective

2. Another one of the car’s safety ⚠️‼️feature system was not working consistently. Feature: cross-traffic (relying on safety sensors) alert would miss several objects and vehicles (from various directionally) and only alert me inconsistently, despite clear individuals, bicycles, and vehicles, objects being in front of it (the various sensors)

Vehicle instead, when I started to experience more problems w/the car)

3. There was a huge constant rattle / crackling / ‘popcorn’ sound coming from the dashboard / transmission (where you shift) area nonstop at high (70+ speeds) - extremely loud and nonstop
4. The panoramic sunroof’s 4 different seals had not been properly replaced (they were cut and glued in), so when I went to the carwash the 4 seals came out (these seals should have been properly replaced by toyota, but were not) (this 100% will lead to leaking)

5. I would fill the tank up with gas and the “distance to empty” (which should be consistent because the tank should hold the same amount of gas every time) would fluctuate from 250 to 324
5. The automatic transmission gears shifting were jerky
6. The dealership forgot to give me my $2,000 check for the price difference of the trade-in! Despite mentioning that I would get it same-day - they completely failed to give it to me, so I left the store and back to my homestate without a check deposit

Desired outcome: Full Shipping Refund requested

CarMax Carmax Sales Service

On 06/26/2022 I went to CarMax for an appointment with a list of vehicles they had on their lot that I had researched for test driving. I provided the list to the sales person who reassured me that each of the vehicles were available to test drive. First one I had on my list was a 2018 Subaru Outback which the sales man went to get and provided to me. I informed the sales man I liked that car and proceeded to test drive another which was a 2019 Subaru Impreza per my request and I like it as well. However it was an extremely difference in looks. I pointed out to the sales man that the first car the 2018 looked different then the pictures online I had reviewed. He reassured me that car he had me test drive was the 2018 model Outback. Again I insisted to him the odometer reading was not matching what was online. He still told me no it was in fact, the 2018 Subaru Outback. The salesman showed me online the prices of the two vehicles and I was astonished the 2018 Outback was not much of a difference from a 2019 Impreza, which influenced my decision to sign all the paperwork for the car I saw for that sticker price. Sales man gave me the keys and I was in love with my new car. Unfortunately my dreams were crushed when I received the call from Sales Manager Freddie on 06/27/2022 to verify the VIN on my new car with the one he said was not matching. After realizing the VIN was not the same as the vehicle I signed paperwork for he asked that I return it as soon as possible or they will come get it. The sales manager explained they were looking all over for this car on their lot and I am not supposed to have it because it was a 2020 Subaru Outback Touring. I was not happy about the incompetency from Carmax salesman after I had repeatedly told him that day the car online was not matching what I had test drove. The Sales Manager Freddie did not apologize instead made me feel like I had screwed up by having the keys because he told me 'you have our keys.' There was no indication that Carmax took ownership of their mistake instead made accusations their customer, me of wrong doing. When I asked for an apology he stated "yes, we made a mistake.' I was at work and there was no way to get the car 45 minutes away. Not even a mention of giving my trade in car back to me for this inconvenience. Carmax staff baited me with a car I could not afford in hopes I would fall in love with said car that was purchased to me. I no longer wanted the 2018 Subaru Outback because the car I bought was the sticker price I agreed to. CarMax made multiple mistakes in treating their customer with disrespect by accusing tone for their own management freak out. They told me to take the car I had on the paperwork as purchased however, I was never shown or test drove the 2018. Mind you I was there 06/26/2022 for my appointment from 2pm-6pm. After some days of sales manager Freddie and Business Manager Mathew from Fresno calling and harassing me while I was at work. I turned the keys over and had the 2018 dropped off to me which was a huge mistake. Because now that I have test drove it the vehicle has major steering/alignment issues. When I called Freddie after work he proceeded to tell me to wait at service center for the repairs. No apology. Again I live 45 minutes away so why am I inconvenienced again? Which I have the wrong car because when I signed those papers it was for the 2020 Subaru Outback Touring not the 2018 Subaru Outback. I was misled when signing a contract by the staff of Carmax and everyone I spoke to never took accountability for the waste of time they have spent on this situation. My impression was the car I signed paperwork for was the car I test drove.

Desired outcome: I would appreciate to have the 2020 Outback Subaru Touring for the price of the 2018 Outback Subaru that I was provided from salesman and signed paperwork for.

CarMax New car delivery appearance

This one star rating is strictly based on the last step of the Carmax buying experience when you receive your clean car and it has a big yellow bow on it.

Every step in the process beginning with my decision to purchase I felt like a valued customer and my review was 5 stars. But I waited 45 minutes after all transactions were completed for my car to be detailed. To my horror it was not! It was rinsed not washed. Bug matter was heavy on the headlights and front window. Side windows were dirty. The interior of the car was so dusty I wrote my name on the dash. The interior was not vacuumed or wiped of stains in front and back cup holders, seats, and inside armrest was dusty. My son got somebody who offered to detail it if I came back. Another guy wanted to still put the bow on it. I told him no I expected a clean car. I said I'm not putting a bow on a dirty car! All of this should have been done while I was waiting.

I was upset and also spoke to the 4 young guys that appeared to be detailing the car 30 minutes prior (car was wet and doors were open). I did not feel like a valued customer when I pulled off. Since this was not my first Carmax purchase so I was so very disappointed. I did a Google review afterwards and uploaded 16 of the 30 pics I took of the car delivered to me. I wish I could have added them to this review. The advisors get 5 stars!

Desired outcome: I was told by the mgr at Potomac Mills I would get reimbursed $125 if car was professionally cleaned but reimbursement should also apply to customers who can prove car delivery state. I waited more than 45 minutes. See attached pictures.
