Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) review: Overdraft fees 35

This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback.

I arranged for my mortgage payment to be deducted automatically from my checking account. The online banking site that that "payee will require five processing days to complete transaction". I planned accordingly, so that the money would draft the day I got paid. It ended up being drafted after two days, my account went in the red, and I was charged $630 in overdraft fees over the course of the next three days until my check went in. There was plenty of money in savings, but because it drafted early the checking account was overdrawn. The bank insists that in the disclosure agreement it says two to five days. The customer service representative could not direct me to the relevant passage in the disclosure agreement, however I could readily direct her to the part about "will take five days to draft".

The bottom line is that they care less about my continued business than they do waiving $630 in fines that never should have existed. I am thoroughly disappointed. This account has been open for nine years.

BB&T is the WORST BANK in the United States. I thought Wachovia was because of their lame explanation of overdraft fees, but I just found the worst. I had 5 pending transactions that the money in my account was already accounted for and was reduced from my balance. I made a mistake and used my check card since AMERICA LIKES TO PREACH ON DOING THIS NOW, when i had cash. The store wouldn't void my transaction. I called this f*ck of a bank, and the person I talked to was a rude minority. I asked her "Is it too late for me to deposit this now without getting charged an overdraft fee?" I was already sure it was 2:00 PM. They will not waive any fees for [censored]. She wouldn't give me a straight answer. Her response was "You should just deposit $45 to be sure you're covered." WTF!?!? You won't give me a straight answer and you want me to put money in there just to give you? I elect not to as I don't have the money anyways. I could have tossed $2.50 in there to cover it but with a lame answer like that I just decide to eat the $35. Well here's where legalness comes into question. I had 5 pending transactions already accounted for and deducted from my balance. They just hadn't "officially" went through to the other side yet. This $2.50 transaction was my last and only transaction that was listed and in the negative. So I should just get charged $35 right? WRONG! THESE ### ARE NOW CHARGING ME $35 FOR EACH PENDING TRANSACTION THAT WAS ALREADY PAID AND DEDUCTED FROM MY BALANCE, HOWEVER ONLY ONE TRANSACTION WHICH WAS THE LATEST, WHICH IS STILL IN PENDING, WAS THE ONE TO GO NEGATIVE AND I SHOULD GET ONE CHARGE. NO NOW I'M GETTING AROUND 5. Safe to say i've signed up with Suntrust. Unfortunately my paycheck is direct depositing to this account, for the last time. The smart thing to do with banks is to not deal with them at all. From now on I will be withdrawing all of my money besides my bills that get debited out and not risk this ever happening again. Also i'm going to take the BB&T account and charge a bunch of stuff I want b/c they need to be screwed. I've done this before my credit is still straight. All they have are excuses and pissy customer service reps.

I have been using BB&T Online for awhile. When they first began with the overdraft fee's, I felt maybe it had been my fault. But, after using their so called customer "Fraud Service", I realized it's not really a services. If they refund money to me on behalf of some company that rip me off, within the next few weeks, they will find a way to take that money back and more in overdraft fee's. The last time I was attacked by BB&T was December 8, 2008. I had come down to just a few dollars in my checking, and through their version of "when funds come in, the time, and so on", they completely whiped out my savings. I want to join a lawsuit if one is available. Please advise.

PRIOR TO ESTABLISHING AN ACCOUNT WITH THIS BANK, I SPOKE WITH THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT TWICE. BOTH TIMES I WAS LIED TO. THEIR INTENT IS TO GET YOU TO OPEN AN ACCOUNT REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY HAVE TO TELL YOU. I ASKED VERY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS BECAUSE OF A PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH MY OLD BANK. THEN IN 2 DAYS I WAS CHARGED $420.00 IN OVERDRAFT FEES BECAUSE A CASH DEPOSIT I MADE TOOK THREE DAYS TO CREDIT TO MY ACCOUNT. WHEN I WENT TO THE BANK AND SPOKE WITH A "CERTIFIED RELATIONSHIP bANKER" I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD LOOK INTO IT AND CALL ME THE NEXT DAY. I HAD TO CALL THE BANK MYSELF TWICE AND WAS THEN TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING SHE COULD DO. PRIOR TO THAT, I ALSO CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD I WOULD BE CALLED RIGHT BACK. THREE WEEKS LATER AND I AM STILL WAITING ON THAT CALL.

Who ever said morally wrong was exactly right. I have had a BB&T account for 6 months. During this time
I have been feed a total of $925.oo . How can the government allow these banks to rearrange your spending in their favor. I 'm a newly laid off single mother of 4. They took $200 from me this week. Domino affect. I'm sure you all know what I mean. I have asked them for help. All the employees do so well in understanding and then telling you there is nothing they can do. They will fight you on it until your worn down and depressed. Me and my children have no money, no job, and soon to be out on the streets. I wonder how much money BB&T makes every year on bank fees? What are they doing with all this extra money?

Here recently I was charged twice for this months auto insurance payment. My auto insurance company admitted it was there mistake and refunded my a payment but charging me twice made my bank account over withdraw.

When I explained this to my auto insurance company they said they would be more than willing to get a hold of BB&T and explain the situation and help resolve my problem. When I went to my local bank they informed me I would have to email them from there site and they would pass it along to the person that was in charge of that field.

When I got back home the first thing I did was email them and explained the problem and gave them the number to my auto insurance provider. Well three days later and 5 more overdraft fees on stuff I originally had the money for I got a email back.

They informed me they had no plans to contact my auto insurer and told me that "even if it was a mistake on there behalf it was still a charge towards my account and I was responsible for it."

I sent them a email back saying how was I supposed to know this was going to happen. Any other bank would have denied one of the charges since I didn't have the money for it. They haven't sent back a reply.

I was charged over $200 in overdraft fee because of the way they deduct checks frm your account, doing the largest check first, which they admitted.
This is an outrage and I will be switching banks in the near future.
They are a horrible bank when it comes to overdraft fees.
By the way, the lady I spoke with from BB&T was very rude!

Yeah..what's really great is if your account goes negative...as a courtesy they allow you to use your debit card so you can be charged another fee, and another fee..the best part is when you deposit money in the atm at night...and you use your debit card the next day and you are charged an overdraft fee because the money in the atm...showing as being available is not "actually posted" to your account...so the debit card transaction causes your account to become negative, and you are charged an overdraft fee...even though the money was there the entire time. Banks like to do debit first, credit last. Greedy S.O.B.s!

Compared to BB&T Chase was 100% better. Ya I had a few mix ups with Chase but they where more than willing to work with me to fix the mistakes.
BB&T may or may not admit it when they make a mistake. Like I said when I wrote this I was charged twice for my Auto Insurance and any other bank will deny one of the charges since I didn't have the money to cover it. But BB&T is more than willing to bring a charge over to your account and have your account get over-withdrawn just to make them money.

BB&T Branch is a disgrace; they have used manipulative tactics and charged me $2, 135 dollars so far THIS YEAR, in 2009, IN OVERDRAFT FEES. The customer service is horrific, they are not willing to help in any way, it is a shame that they have not gone under already, they will not last long with the customer service they provide to loyal customers who have been banking with them for YEARS! Never EVER bank with BB&T.

I had to get the Better Business Bureau involved over a fraud charge that was charge to my account this month and last. Once they received my complaint from them that really got there ### moving. So my suggestion to any one else who has an account with BB&T is if you are really having a problem with them get the Better Business Bureau involved. There wed address is BBB.org.

I FINALLY OPENED AN ACCOUNT WITH CHASE. SO IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF A FEW DAYS TO A WEEK UNTIL I AM FREE OF BB&T!

We have been with BB&T Bank since Sept 2008 and they have charged us over $3000 in overdraft charges. In April of 2009 we paid over $300 in overdraft charges for little things that was not our fault. BB&T is a non-FDIC Bank. We found this out after we filed a complaint with the FDIC. We live off of a limited income and we can not afford this kind of ripoffs. It looks like everyone is going to have to get together and file complaints and get BB&T shut down. This is why they are not having to accept the bailout funds. They are cheatingt heir loyal customers.

3 days to get the deposit you made at a BB&T office into your BB&T account ? In the time when everything can go instant trough electronic systems.

There can be no technical reason for this, the technic can do this instant, but above the big money they earn on fees it must be nice for BB&T to own/loan your money for 3 days to use it and make money with it as they please, multiply that to all the customers and they got some room to party.

Ones again they have there own profit above honest care for there customers...

banks only post monday - friday nights. If you make a deposit after cut-off time on Friday then you won't have availability until Tuesday morning. Because after Friday, , Monday night is the first processing night.
Everybody knows this.

Well, you made your first mistake in thinking that they give a s**t about you or anyone else! They don't! I have been in the same boat with BB&T and the smartest thing anyone can do is to change banks. I have that credit unions treat their customers MUCH better! The only thing BB&T is interested in is how much money they can steal out of our pockets to line theirs with. They should be sued!

First you (Jenoio713) need to learn how to spell irresponsible. Secondly, BB&T most certainly has their system set up so that they are able to collect overdraft fees from people. I have a friend who worked their and it is true.
I have been taken to the cleaners by them in the amount of thousands as well. There is indeed a flawed system that inables them to make large amounts of money from people due to overdraft fees.
I will be most Happy to join any lawsuit regarding this matter with BB&T!

I used to work for BB&T as a "Relationship Banker". One little mistake in your check book can lead to thousands of fees...it snowballs. I got sick of BS'ing clients who incurred overdraft fees by telling them "we are loaning you money interest free...blah blah blah". I was eventually let go because I spent too much time with these clients trying to help them. BB&T wanted us to sell more and serve customers less. They incouraged us to sell banking products (credit cards, fraud protection etc.) even when the client didn't need or want them. Then if you ask for help (on top of the embarrassment), they are condescending and most of the time unwilling to help unless you have ump-teen accounts and high average balances. If you have a lot of money in BB&T, everything is free...because those that are NOT rolling in the dough are paying for the rich clients' free stuff! They are despicable in my opinion.

OK - i find it sort of humorous that "realitybites247" found it necessary to correct "jenio73" on the spelling of irresponsible and they chose the wrong there/their/they're. Has to make everyone including themselves laugh.

BOTTOM LINE - overdraft fees are a rip and it sucks.

I was charged two overdraft fees on the 3rd of November totally $70. I called to complain as I felt that I did not deserve the charges. On the 5th, I was told that there was a bank error and $35 would be refunded to me. Also on the 5th, I was charged two more overdraft fees that would not have been charged had the $35 they replaced been available on the 3rd when it was initially removed. Due to those two overdraft fees of $70, was then overdrawn again and charged another $70. So I sent them an email complaining about the unfair charges to my account due to their error. I did not get a response so I went to the main branch on the 17th to clear this matter up. After approximately 30 minutes of explaining myself, I was told that the $140 would be returned to my account. I left the bank satisfied...until I received a phone call today, the 18th, and was told that the $35 that was refunded to me was a mistake by the representative that refunded it. In other words, it shouldn't have been refunded. She had mistakenly refunded money that shouldn't have been, therefore I would not get my $140. I should have known that they would find a way to keep that money. This is not the first time I have had this problem with this bank. They have unfair fees and should be put out of business. I am notifying the commission and making sure that this bank does not continue to steal people's money.

I am leading a campaign against BB&T. For legitimate complaints, file a complaint with the North Carolina Commissioner of Banks, BB&T's headquarters is based in NC and the complaint must be filed with the NC Commissioner. http://www.nccob.org/nccob and click on "Consumer Assistance." From the drop down menu, select "Complaint Information." On this page, select "How To File A Complaint." Then click on "Consumer complaint form." After filling out the form, click "continue" and you will be asked to print out the report and either fax or mail it to the North Carolina Commissioner of Banks. I figure if we flood their office with enough complaints, then something will be done.

I was out of State, in Colorado, because my grandmother fell extremely ill. BB&T does not have branches in Colorado. I was having to call the toll free number to check my available balance each night. On Tuseday 1/19 I had $12.67, on Wednesday 1/20 I had -$335 and on Thursday (the day my grandmother passed) I had -$750. I contacted the bank, advising them I was relying on their system and that I would like to discuss the fees. They refused to do anything to help. They said I did not have eneough rapport with them. I asked them if getting direct deposit every two weeks, never over drafting and always following my bank accounts was not enough raport. At which point they literally said no. I reached out to the teller at my branch in VA. Sure enough she said she would call back, no call back, no credits no help. I called work to cancel my direct deposit, after all, I needed my money to be able to drive from CO all the way home to VA. The direct deposit still went through, now my account balance, between savings and checking is only $6. Furious at the fact that the bank stated that there were no bank errors I proceeded to investigate my account. On 1/16/10 I requested a transfer of funds from my savings to my checking. The account went over draft on the 19th, which happened to be the same day the bank decided to finally transfer my money. The bank tellers and the website state that transfers on checking and savings account are immediate. If immediat means 3 DAYS! They transferred the money after debit transactions went through, which means while my money was sitting to be transferred they hit my account with overdraft fees and took my whole transfer to cover fees that were not my fault. Since I discovered this I have taken further action with the BBB and am making an in person visit to my bank. If they refuse to take responsibility I will close my accounts, take my $6 and let BBB do the rest.

Ok I just answered another complaint so I will make this one more brief. To everyone reading this post disregard pretty much all the complaints you see on this website as they all have been the peoples own fault. What the person who wrote this complaint did not state was that MLK day was on the 18th so the bank was closed and he or she made the deposit on the Saturday before. They also did not say that they used their debit card on Friday and before they transferred the funds on Saturday. so heres how it went they had 15 dollars in their account on at 12 pm on thursday 1/12/2010 then they went and swiped their debit card for multiple transactions on friday and saturday and then realized i need to transfer the money before those transactions hit my account but what they do not realize is those transactions are immediate as well so evern though they did make the deposit those transactions occured before the deposit was made. Lesson to be learned ---- when you have less that $100 in your account USE CASH not your debit card because you will not be keep up with your transaction!

i asked bb&t for overdraft to be put onto my account, well they tried to put some credit thing on their, and stated that i needed a co-signer and everything. how stupid is the workers for bb&t? really, i mean when you ask for simple overdraft to be put onto your account, that doesnt mean a line of credit or anything like that...it just means that you want overdraft, so if you dont have the funds to cover something or your in a really bad situation, you can overdraft your account and then pay it back. but when i was finally able to get overdraft, it does not work, everytime im in a horrible situation with something and in really bad need of money and when i go to overdraft my account all i get is a paper stating "insufficien funds" i mean if you offer overdraft and you do not let the customer overdraft their account, then why even bother with it? i believe bb&t is just a scam to rip people off

BB&T are crooks! They took $384 out of my account without notice to cover my sisters negative account! I signed secondary on heraccount 15 years ago when it was a different bank. The reason I was given to sign with her was in case anything happened to her I would have access to her account to pay her bills. I have been looking at her account and she was withdrawing money from the ATM while she had a negative balance! How could that even be allowed? They were letting her get money when she had none in her account and then took what she owed out of my account which caused my bills to overdraft because I had no clue that they were going to do this. When I went down to the bank they wouldn't do anything to help me but they said her account was still open! How could they take my money and still leave her account open? Needless to say I closed it while I was there but they also said they did not have to notify me in order to take the money out of my account but what I want to know is why was she repeatedly allowed to withdraw money when her account was a -280.00?
