Welcome to Walmart, I’ve seen many things, however in 68 years of life and I could never tell you, how many visits to Walmart my family and I have made from all over the United States.
Today, I had the displeasure of what has happened to others that I have seen over the years finally happen to me. I must say that in recent years it has only got worse in how customers point out pricing discrepancies and are treated with such disrespect when frustration arises. I have said something about unmarked items, as by the time that you reach the register you can’t remember the price and unless you possess a photographic memory or only have one or two items you can’t remember pricing at the register at all. And yes, I have had to make them change items to match prices stated where you picked up the item and when you reach the register, surprise it rings up at a different amount.
Today I went to Walmart looking for meat. Upon entering the door, I noticed that there were pumpkins at the entry of the produce door. It had a sign placed on it that read “Starting At $3.97”. However, the issue quickly became confusing because all of them were of different sizes. Some very large and then some very small. The ones in the back near the bakery were a small cool design and were clearly marked $4.97.
How do you know what you’re going to be paying for the pumpkin that is marked Starting At $3.97? All different sizes with a sign that states Starting At $3.97. Okay, ask someone that works there. According to the sign, the pricing starts at $3.97 and can climb to whatever. Because you see that what the words mean when thay say Starting At………
I then asked one of the team members in produce what the price of the Pumpkins were. All he could do was smile at me and shake his head in bewilderment and just walked off. I then said as he was walking off, “If you don’t know, how does the consumer know”? I shook my head and went back to the meat department.
I found what I was looking for and returned back to the location that I left my wife in produce I believe. I found another team member and again tried to find out my answer to the mystery question of “Pumpkin Pumpkin How Much Is the Mystery Pumpkin. Well that produce team member could not answer it as well. I then asked for a manager please. A Woman came up and I asked that she follow me and when we arrived at the pumpkin, I then questioned her regarding the price of the Pumpkins. Well after stumbling around for an answer, she finally stated that it was $3.97 for the Pumpkins.
Okay I then questioned why the sign stated “Starting At $3.97” if they were all the same price regardless of size, the sign was confusing folks and I could have been done already if someone could price things correctly. She started questioning why I could not understand the sign it said that it was $3.97. I smiled and let her know that the reason she was here was because her two produce team members did not know and could not tell me, then she had to take up a moment to fish up an answer, what would make her think that I was going to know that the sign meant something different that was written? How should I think differently, it clearly stated "Starting At", it did not state Each or by the Pound. As soon as I questioned the way the sign was confusing and should be changed to correctly state the price as “each” or by “weight”. A Sign that would state “Starting At $X.XX. would be expected to be found over a location with multiple prices throughout the offering, usually priced individually.
It was then that the managers ego had been streatched into a difficult position, and she was struggling to let it change. Having had her lack of ability to understand the translation of her own sign as well as it placing a great deal of stress upon her newly ego challenged position regarding understanding what the sign stated, was just too much for her to handle.
Well, I guess her ego went off the deep end, and she immediately called for security and stated in a voice for all to hear that I was to leave the store. I was no less than 20 feet from the door and was already at the door leaving the store. When she started barking her useless commands.
When I arrived at the door, I was greeted by two individuals in plain clothes, and then by a uniformed Allied Guard. I informed them when they hit the door it was no doubt me that they were looking for, however I was already leaving the store. We then discussed the situation. The large Black man in plain clothes has definitely been exposed to conflict resolution. From start to finnish of this interaction, this man was completly professional without question. If nothing else comes from this, he is the right individual communicating at the store. The others involved, not so much. I explained the situation, he listened, I explained my biggest frustration was that I was being told what I was reading I did not understand. I explained I understood fully, whoever wrote the sign did not know how to communicate the English language, in such a manner that it was to be clearly understood by the consumer. The guard that I referenced above stated that he was sorry and understood, could he assist me in getting the product that I wanted. Bottom line, he took the flame right out of any fire that was happening. His professionalism stood out very clear.
The other individual that was there from security and speaking with the woman who identified herself as a manager of produce to me. At this point I did not get either of their names. If I remember correctly, we had selected the Pumpkin and were getting the meat which I had previously put back. When the other Guard that was speaking with the team manager came up and said that we had to leave the store and the other security member could no longer assist me. I looked at the other non-uniformed store security guard, who had a look of complete confusion on his face, saying he was sorry but had no control over the situation.
How you can have your employees be able to be so incorrect in handling a situation, obviously having challenges in communication with people shopping regarding pricing even if they do not understand it themselves is beyond me. And then when they are questioned and eventually challenged regarding misstatements that they are seeming to defend until their last breath, the individual that has been shopping in your stores without ever an incident since the mid 60’s is told to leave the store. Really? Guess this is where you have no problem, as it seems that your corporates new way of conducting their business is to conduct yourself as all mighty and powerful WALMART, and furthermore conduct yourself in any manner you see fit, regardless of how you are appeaing to just about everyone that deals with your stores.
I will close with this. It is almost amusing, all the videos that are online regarding Walmart and how customers are treated tell a story that is much greater than this situation that just occurred. How Walmart is of the impression that they control a segment of the economy and speak to customers in such a poor manner when questioned or called out seems to be just another day at the office. While I have witnessed this happen at many stores, I just never thought that it would happen to me. It seems common practice that having them removed from the store is your first go to answer, like I said Ego Trip/Power Trip. It is viewed by the public as for the most part unnecessary and out of hand. The management may not view it that way, however their actions are proof of just how far detached they have become from reality.
Before you say anything about what I’ve stated I would ask that you first, take a moment and research your reviews on Google, Yelp, Trust Pilot, X, Facebook and the BBB, plus many others. Yeah, I’m pretty much thinking, the majority of all of your company reviews are in agreeance with what I’ve stated. I will now give to you the name that I requested from the other store plain cloths security agent of the produce manager that I was dealing with. Oh sorry when he went and requested that he be allowed to give me her name, he returned and stated that he would not be giving me her name. Agan, Really? Sure sounds like the two of them are real confident in their position in all of this, NOT. Might I suggest that you state that your employees need to be able to articulate in such a manner, the actual price of something that you have posted on products in your store, understanding this needs to also be in English. Just repeating your own requirements.
A Manager that refuses to give out her name is obviously wanting this to now end that she has positioned herself as completely exposed in not knowing how to actually run a department nor how to simply fix a problem instead of defending it to her last breath.
As I wanted to write a review to the manager of the store, I also found it amusing that your own Walmart Page at Walmart.com states that to write a review under product guidelines, ‘MUST BE IN ENGLISH” you might want to include in your employee manual the same requirements that your give to the consumer, the ability of your own employees to be able to clearly explain your Mistery Pricing Standards, as you have clearly spelled out the importance of it once again, it be in ENGLISH. Had this have occurred when this all started, this would have never been an issue.
Have a great life, better head to WINCO to grab some meat and pumpkins. Now you may want to ask yourself the question, why did I say that I was heading out to WINCO and not Walmart or Sams Club. Because you see, I can. The only reason that I shop at both places is because I Can. When you feel that my questions are just to damn tuff, I would suggest that you look in the mirror and ask yourself what happens when they keep this up at the senior management level and are driving away customers. If you have never tied WINCO, I strongly suggest that you do. Great Employee Owned Company, with greatly discounted products. And here is the kicker, while they are defently less expensive, the employees make you feel like they are glad your there. You are not the only game in town, even if you’re of the impression that you are. Asking me to leave the store, sorry you’re a little late for that one. You only get to make that comment once in 60 plus years
Recommendation: WINCO, No fake pricing, great value, polite employees. Don't remember seeing Winco Employees mugging customers at the door.
