I booked a rental car with Sixt in Barcelona for two days but ultimately only needed the car for one day. At pickup, the company charged my credit card an amount roughly double the rental rate as a deposit.
When we returned the car, we were instructed simply to drop the keys into a lockbox. I found this unusual, so I went back to the counter and specifically asked whether I needed to sign a vehicle-return form or have an agent inspect the car before I left so that my deposit could be released. The agent assured me that everything was fine and told me that I would receive my refund within two days.
Based on that conversation, I reasonably assumed the vehicle would be inspected after we returned it and that the deposit would only be refunded once the company confirmed there was no damage.
Two days later, I received the refund and an invoice by email — only to discover that I had been charged for two days instead of the one day I actually used the vehicle.
Then, six days later, I received an email claiming that the vehicle had been damaged. The car was not damaged when we returned it. Even more concerning, the link provided in the damage-claim email to respond to the allegation did not work.
The entire process is extremely troubling. Their return procedure provides the company with all the leverage while leaving the customer with virtually no protection. Customers are instructed to leave the keys without an inspection or signed acknowledgment of the vehicle's condition, the deposit is refunded, and then a damage claim can apparently be made days later.
I have already contacted their claims department to formally dispute the damage allegation, request evidence supporting their claim, and demand an explanation and refund for the apparent overcharge.
Based on this experience, I strongly caution anyone against renting from this company. At the very least, I would recommend thoroughly documenting the vehicle with photographs and video before pickup and immediately before returning it, and insisting on written confirmation of the vehicle's condition and all charges.
What should have been a straightforward one-day rental turned into an unnecessarily frustrating and concerning experience.
