Qatar Airways review: Worst service experience ever from "world's best airline" details

At Christmas, my family endured the worst travel experience of our lives on Qatar Airways (“Qatar”), an airline that markets itself as “The World’s Best” and claims that “It’s the Details that Makes the Trip.” For me as a volume business traveler for decades, that distinction is damning.

BACKGROUND: Our family decided to take a special trip to the Maldives over Christmas this last year. After researching Qatar’s reputation and appreciating the DFW routing, we booked four business class seats for Dec. 12-23, 2025, at a cost of over $33,000, deliberately opting to return on Dec. 23, 2025, to making certain we could spend Christmas hosting our extended family as we always do. Our nine days at Four Seasons Landaa was the best vacation of our lives and we left the property with perfect memories and in high spirits ready to enjoy the Qatar business class flights home to celebrate Christmas.

THE ROOT CAUSE -- QATAR PLANE’S MECHANICAL FAILURE MINUTES BEFORE TAKEOFF: As the plane was preparing to take-off at 8:45 pm on Dec. 22nd, the Captain announced a “minor” mechanical issue required us to “briefly” return to the gate. We sat on-board an hour with no substantive information before being ordered to de-plane. By then, our Doha/DFW connection was clearly lost and our carefully planned arrival home before Christmas Eve ruined. That should have been when Qatar demonstrated the customer service it advertises, but the complete opposite occurred.

QATAR’S FAILURE COMPOUNDS AT THE MALE AIRPORT: We remained at the airport gate for over an hour repeatedly asking the agent there to rebook us on the 9:40 a.m. Doha–DFW first flight out so we could make the first flight back to DFW the next day. The agent insisted that would be done
About 11:30 p.m., the Qatar agent informed us our plane was so broken that our flight was cancelled so we would have to stay the night. She assured us that we would be re-booked on the 9:40 a.m. flight. We repeatedly asked her why the 9:40 a.m. rebooked flight was not showing up on our Qatar App, and kept saying it would be soon. She told us the Male airport hotel was acceptable accommodations and said that was our only option as we had to be at the airport at 6:40 a.m. the next morning.

THE AIRPORT HOTEL DISASTER & QATAR’S REBOOKING DECEPTION: After clearing customs and collecting luggage, we arrived at the Hulhule Island Hotel at 12:30 a.m.—exhausted, stressed, and hungry from not eating since a late breakfast as we planned to eat on the flight to Doha. Our endless night at that hotel that Qatar forced upon us was worst hours in this Qatar’s comedy of errors. When we walked in our rooms, the chemical stench was nauseating and the floor was sticky.

Minutes after entering our hotel rooms, we received the promised Qatar rebooking email and learned the Qatar agent had lied. We were not on the 9:40 a.m. flight. Instead, we were rebooked on the only other flight out, a 7:50 p.m. departure to Doha, with us arriving in DFW at 3:45 p.m. on Christmas Eve, 30 hours late. This rebooking meant we would be stranded in the small Male airport ALL DAY and if Qatar failed us again on that rebooked late last flight out, we would spend at least another sleepless night in that Male airport hotel with no way home until Christmas Day or days after if flights were full. By then, our frustration and mental stress was at a breaking point

We immediately called Qatar customer service and for the next two hours, we consistently received dismissive, rude treatment. Despite more than ten open business class seats on the 9:40 a.m. flight, Qatar’s agent refused to rebook us, claiming that because our tickets were AA codeshares, it was “AA’s problem” and we had no choice but to take the only offered 7:50 p.m. flight. After we finally persuaded her to escalate the situation and attempt to rebook us as promised, she abruptly ended the call. While we were calling back, we received an email reflecting my wife and children had been rebooked on the 9:40 a.m. flight, but my rebooking remained unchanged leaving me separated from my family for the entirety of the way home and stranded in Male all day until the late 7:50 p.m. flight.

We called back and after more extremely rude treatment, at 2:00 a.m., a supervisor finally moved me to the 9:40 a.m. flight—but by then, my family’s earlier 9:25 a.m. Christmas Eve DFW arrival flight was full—meaning Qatar was still forcing me to be separated from my family and take a flight arriving late Christmas eve afternoon.

MORE FAILURES AT THE FLAGSHIP: At Qatar Airways flagship airport and business class lounge, we spoke with multiple representatives and their supervisors telling them what had occurred. Each said that our experience was unacceptable and would be remedied by Qatar, but only by email. No person there or by phone was Even though there are dozens of employees to address every business class traveler need in the lounge, there was not a single person available there or by phone to address the situation.

Qatar’s only on-site accommodation was a hotel voucher for me since I had to spend the night separated from my family while they traveled home. The “5-Star” hotel they sent me to was more of the same, the bathroom flooded and the food was barely edible.

RUINED CHRISTMAS: Qatar Airway’s failures ruined our family’s Christmas. Rather than getting home the morning of the 23rd as planned and paid for, I got home in the earning evening Christmas eve. By the time my wife got home, it was too late to shop for groceries so we had to cancel our extended family Christmas gathering and had a much muted gathering the day after Christmas.

SURPRISE/SURPRISE – QATAR’S CUSTOMER SERVICE COMPLAINT RESPONSE – MONTHS OF IGNORING EMAILS FOLLOWED BY A JOKE OF A FINAL OFFER OF $300 CREDIT:

Upon our return, the details of this experience were shared with Qatar Airways long before the war began with a demand for reimbursement of our fares and other compensation WITH NO RESPONSE. Follow-ups were ignored. I paused contact during the height of the war knowing it was fruitless, but began anew when flight service resumed. The first substantive response months after our complaint was a hollow apology email. After requesting the matter be escalated and engaging over several more months, the final offer given in July was $300 per passenger flight credit – a slap in the face and no proportional compensation for the harm caused when we paid $33,500+ for promised service.
My hope is that other travel
ers read this review and let Qatar know by booking elsewhere that it should not falsely advertise to be “the World’s Best Airline” where “the details make the trip" when its response to its own failures compounds and worsens them without ANY caring or financial accountability.

Recommendation: DO NOT BOOK QATAR AIRWAYS -- THEY DON'T CARE WHEN THEY FAIL!
