I am writing to raise a formal complaint regarding a purchase we made at Pure Gold Jewellers during a recent layover at Abu Dhabi Airport. (2/5/2026)
We purchased a 22k gold necklace weighing 7.45 grams and were charged 8,720 dirhams. After reviewing the invoice and comparing the price against the standard market value of gold, we believe we were significantly overcharged. In fact, the amount paid appears to be more than double the expected value based on current gold prices.
What is most concerning is that we were never clearly informed of the necklace’s weight or the full pricing breakdown during the purchase process. We only discovered the exact weight after later reviewing the invoice ourselves. At no point were transparent pricing details provided while the jewellery was being shown to us, leaving us unable to properly assess whether the item was being sold at a fair and reasonable rate.
The salesman also explained that the necklace was originally part of a set but could be sold separately. Given the limited time we had during our airport layover, we trusted that a business operating within Abu Dhabi Airport would provide fair and honest pricing. Instead, we now feel that our circumstances and time constraints were taken advantage of, knowing we would have little opportunity to question the purchase or return to the store.
We have visited Abu Dhabi and Dubai many times over the years and have previously purchased gold from other retailers in the UAE without any issues. Until now, we have always viewed the UAE as a trustworthy and reputable place to buy gold jewellery. Unfortunately, this experience has seriously damaged our trust and confidence in purchasing gold within the UAE, particularly from airport retailers that we believed operated to a high standard of integrity and transparency.
Since this incident, we have also found numerous online reviews from other customers describing very similar experiences, which has increased our concern that this may not be an isolated case.
We would appreciate a full explanation regarding the pricing of this item, including a breakdown of the gold value, making charges, and any additional costs that contributed to the final amount charged. We also request that this matter be reviewed fairly and urgently.
