I’ve shopped at this Publix location for some time and have generally had positive experiences, which is why this interaction stood out.
On a recent evening, about 15 minutes before closing, I stopped in briefly after spending the day at the beach and going out to dinner. I was still in the same outfit (swimsuit with a mesh shirt, sandals, and a Pride hat). Shortly after entering, I was approached by a manager and a security officer and told I needed to leave due to a complaint about my attire.
While I understand that stores may have expectations around dress, the situation was handled in a way that felt unnecessarily embarrassing. During the interaction, the security officer referred to my swimsuit as “skimpy underwear,” and this was said within earshot of others.
I complied immediately and left without issue. My concern is not about store policy, but about how the situation was communicated. There are respectful and discreet ways to address concerns, and this did not feel like one of them.
Update: I’ve contacted Publix Customer Care and understand this has been escalated. Given the nature of the interaction, I’d appreciate connecting with local leadership to ensure this is reviewed appropriately.
