Hello,
I forgot my phone in a shopping cart earlier today, it took me two hours to notice so I was fearful it had been stolen.
I have an iPhone so I immediately had my sister track my phone with "find my iPhone" app. It was "on" and located at meijer, just where I thought. My friend called and was out on hold for about 20 minutes so I went alone without a phone and figured she'd explain what was happening.
When I arrived I waited outside the customer service counter for about 5 minutes, it was 20 to close. I then went to ask a cashier if the customer service was open. She said it was. I went back to wait for about 3 more minutes and no one showed up. So I went back to the cashier and she then pointed me vaguely to a man in a blue shirt at the U-Scans.
I approached the man at a safe distance (wearing a mask) and said "excuse me, I left my phone here a little while ago-"
He cut me off. "No phones have been turned in." He said very cold and short. He didn't even look at me. I was shocked
I continued with "Well... I tracked my phone on... on..." I was very shocked still and couldn't think of the word I was looking for. He bounced his head in a condescending was as I stuttered what I was trying to say.
"Look no phones have been turned in!" He said more coldly than before still not looking at me and definitely not doing anything else. He then turned all the way around so his back was completely to me.
I tried to choke out more words feeling incredibly foolish but he began to walk away. Never looking at me once. Never asked to take down a name or number.
I've been in customer service for over 10 years and my father was a customer service trainer. The correct way to handle this would have been as followed.
Turn to me, smile, and listen. Then say "hey sorry about that, I haven't heard about any phones being turned in but if you give me your name and a number to reach you on, I'll let you know if I find one.
Or
"Let me go check!"
This is the first time I've ever complained about customer service. I wandered to the parking lot crying after because it was SO much ruder than words can describe. Every customer service employee I passed immediately looked to the ground and ignored me.
My friend arrived quickly after saying she talked to an AWFUL man on the phone named Kevin who was the "store manager" and she quickly came to warn me not to talk to that man. He was wearing a bright blue shirt and the man I talked to was the same Kevin.
Eventually (this is the good part) I wandered in to the other side of carts, to keep looking. And a woman named Mary Joe was there and helped me SO much. She comforted me because it was clear I had been crying and I told her I was too afraid to go near that scary man again. She was very apologetic and stayed with me, called a woman over to help.
She went into the customer service area and unlocked something to find MY PHONE! What do you know? It was in there the WHOLE time.
That man is a terrible representation of your business and I will not be shopping at that Meijer again, even though Mary Joe was amazing. Kevin literally made me never want to go again.
Please make this aware to the Wilder Rd Bay City MI Meijer. No one should have to be afraid of a manager in a store they just spent 200$ in.
Sorry for the long story, thank you for listening.
