On Friday, July 17 we rented a car at the Detroit airport approx 12 noon. Record# 679077895; vehicle 2025 SOUL, license FL RGEB45. We drove the car to Battle Creek MI. On Saturday we learned that our flight to Newark for Saturday night was canceled. We were rebooked and had to fly from Chicago to LGA/NY on Sunday. We needed to get approval to drop the car off in Chicago ORD. Saturday, apprx 1:30-2:30 we CALLED Hertz. Customer service (800-654-3131). They insisted they couldn't help us and we had to call the Detroit airport Hertz, Phone 734-941-4747! We called 10 times! The messages included advising us to use the app! We tried the app several times, it wouldn't accept our change. Every time we would call, Press 3 to talk to a local agent... after 10 rings it would disconnect us! In-between we'd call the 800# who insisted they couldn't help us and one operator actually hung up on me while saying "have a nice day". We called the 734# again. We were beyond frustrated as we were heading to Chicago. We had to turn around, feeling we had to go back to the Detroit airport (120 miles and 2 hours away). Since we were in the area of Kalamazoo, as a last try, we decided to call that airport for assistance. After an hour of frustration and anxiety (what to do with the car?), a professional woman answered the phone and within 10 minutes set up the approval and charged us for a Chicago drop off!
Claimed loss: No financial loss
Desired outcome: We have been a GOLD member of Hertz for years and we expect that Hertz would be more accommodating. We found ourselves in a stressful situation with no solution and concern about missing our flight on Sunday.

That is a nightmare of runaround, but you pulled off a win by finding that one competent woman in Kalamazoo. Here is my practical take: next time, skip the 800 number entirely and call the local branch of the city you are dropping off at (like Chicago ORD) directly from the start, because they control the approvals and fees. Also, ask that helpful agent for her direct extension or email so you have a lifeline. Now, call Hertz corporate and demand a partial refund or credit for the Chicago drop-off fee, citing the 10 calls and the hang-up, because you have the record numbers and the approval. You outsmarted their broken system, so use that leverage.
