Dollar General refusal to return a faulty item

I bought a swiffer wet jet starter kit for $20 at my local dollar general where I shop frequently. When I got it home I realized it was used, broken, and didn't have the cleaning solution or pads. So I took it back immediatly with my reciept. All I wanted was a new one. The cashier was more than willing to do it for me, but the assistant manager on duty accused me of breaking it and then trying to get a new one. He made me come back 1/2 hour later to speak to the general manager. I went back and the manager accused me of the same thing! I told him I bought it off his shelf just like it was. He insisted on checking the survalence video! He came back and still after seeing me in the store with my son earlier that day buy it right off the shelf, didn't believe me! He did give me a new one but refused to give me my money back and wrote on the receipt not to return it without seeing him. I was treated like a thief and highly insulted all because they had a broken product on thier shelf! I will never shop there again and have told everyone I know to do tha same!

I think you've inhaled way too many coal dust fumes up there in Nanticoke, PA. "Dollar General" attracts all kinds of vermin for customers trying to scam them. They're merely trying to protect themselves.

Dollar General still suspended

Still suspended, no word or contact from anyone. I called erc as directed and specified that I had issues, concerns, and complaints with my dm about retaliation/discrimination and spent over an hour on the phone with the erc rep, who assured me that my report would get sent above him to a group that does the actual investigation and I would get a call from them within 48 hours. Called back today because I never got that call, and was told that the only thing that they do when an employee calls is email the dm and/or the rm. I informed the rep again that the issue was with the dm and I needed to speak with someone who actually would look out for the employee. (Not gonna happen) the rep suggested calling hirs, which I had done, they handle nothing of the sort. She then advised me she would forward the info to my rm, who I imagine will just call my dm, and the issues will go no furthur. She also said that my dm had until the end of business day on 6/29 to contact me in reguards to the suspension, to either let me know about the progress of the investigation on me, to bring me back, or to terminate me. I also called the alternative dispute hotline, who informed me that they couldn't do anything for me unless I was terminated. Also filed a complaint with the eeoc, who is doing a phone interview with me next week to "fact find" and see if I have a case. Today I spoke with the attourney that advised my husband, and he said again, that the "at will" statement that we all signed is basically protecting dollar general in every avenue. He also said to prove discrimination it has to be specifically against age, race, gender, or sexual harrassment.
I am so angry and frustrated that this company can continue to abuse its employees, and nothing is ever done to correct it! If anyone knows other people within the company or out, that I should contact, please let me know.

In responce to robertsmiythe: Who are you again? 1st: Wether I am brought back to staff is not the issue. The issue is wrong doing, and until it is done to you, don't assume that you know my situation. Read any of the posts on Dollar General? They are a company that treats its employees, and sometimes its customers horribly. If my District Manager is acting unethical, I should say or do nothing? Do you work? If so, if wrong doing is going on, do you just turn the other way like a coward?
As far as I know Princess's are taken care of, bills get paid for them, and they don't have to have a job. You chose the wrong person to insult, as I believe in standing for what is fair and right. Let me guess, you are a Dollar General Executive or Manager that thinks that you are safe? Thanks for your comment, but I believe that I asked for advice, not un-educated opinions.

I am a sales associate at DG and during my first month in the company, I was called a [censored] by the store manager. I was told by the assistant manager, brought it to the DM's attention, we had a meeting, NOT invovling the one who called me a [censored] and nothing happened after that. For about 4 months that is. We moved stores, we had a new one built about 1?4 mile down the road. During the 48 hour moving period, we had many people from different stores come and help out. I was on the heavy moving duty, so I was working with several men. As I was leaving one day, I heard the manager say to one of the men I was giving a ride to the other store with "Watch out, that ### is ###ing dirty". Thats no way to speak about ANY one. I had the two men that heard her say it, and the 3rd keyholder PLUS the assistant manager who heard it write a letter to corporate. We were to give these letters to our Dm who assured they would get to the proper hands and action would be taken. The following 3 weeks, my store manager (who was clearly clued in by the DM) cut my hours to 5 hours a week in a poor attempt to get me to quit, which didnt work. It is now 9 months later and nothing has happened as of yet.

Can anyone help? My sister, who is a little slow but very dedicated and hard working, has been working for DG for nearly 2 1/2 years. She went from 3rd key to assistant manager recently. She had a great evaluation and raise a few months ago. Now they have suspended her for questionable DLC's and are investigating? She has copies of each test she took and gave them to the DM. It has been over 2 weeks. No one has contacted her. She lives pay check to pay check.
She is so loyal to company. What should she do? Who should she call? concerned big sister in another state.

I've tried to go the same route you have, thru my SM, then calling the hotline. I finally got a piece of S*** lawyer who took me through 4 yrs of hell, cause he didn't want to do his job. Trust me, let the EEOC know about it, they are the ones who have been working on my case for the last year. So far they have done a fabulous job. Basically I was sexually harassed and I have proof that I sent to DG and they still deny it to this day. DG specifically states "They are lying" ! So whatever happens in the company that they do wrong, whether overworking and underpaying their employees or harassing or discriminating them; they do whatever they can to cover it up, act like it never happened and move on to other business.

I'm in the same situation you are in, I called on my DM and complained about her and the following 2 weeks, I was suspended, pending an investagation, for violence/profanity used at the workplace, no respond from the RM, who was suppose to call me back in 48hrs, had no kowledge that i was even being investagated until that day. Is there anybody I can contact so I can sue them for wrongful termination due to retalilation.

PLEASE FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISION AND/OR THE EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION - IT'S FREE. ALL EMPLOYEES HAVE RIGHTS AND YOU HAVE YOURS. THESE AGENCIES KEEP RECORDS OF THIS SORT OF BEHAVIORS BY COMPANIES AND IT'S PROBABLY THE ONLY WAY YOU WILL GET YOUR PROBLEM SOLVED. DOLLAR GENERAL WILL DO NOTHING NOR DOES IT CARE. IT IS A VERY POOR RUN ORGAIZATION.

Dollar General discrimination/wrongful termination

This is my story. In April of 08 I started out as a 3rd key on Galion Ohio. I was quickly promoted to Assistant Manager, due to my work ethic and willingness to break my back to get the job done. Later in that year I transferred to Mansfield store #4638, a store that did a third of the volume that I was used to working in, as Assistant Manager there. My fiancé (who became so after I was transferred) was still the manager at 10401, performing at the top or #2 of our district. In April 09 his store, which was first to be Model Store Certified, was chosen to become a perfect store, so for 12 days he worked 10-12 hour days, sometimes over night, hand in hand with the team from Corporate to get the remodel done. The day that it was completed we had a district managers meeting in my current store (4638). My fiancé comes out and says that he has been suspended along with another manager because they couldn’t find a paper trail from the literacy deposits in either store. No money was missing, just no paper trail. Now if you work for this corporation, you are familiar with how much pressure we have put on us to collect literacy, but it just goes in our store deposits, so he had no doubt that they would find out whatever the problem was, fix it, and reinstate him. WRONG. One week later the DM called him and the other manager into another store and fired them for “Misappropriation of Company Funds”. 1st, literacy is NOT a company fund, and 2nd, no lawyer could help them because as managers they were “at will” employees.
Meanwhile, I am still employed at Dollar General in my same position. I assumed that I would be next because by that time my fiancé and I were married, and I assumed that in the companies eyes, my still being there would be a conflict of interest. I inquired a few times but my DM assured me that he had no doubt that I would be a star in this company, and that he had such big plans for me, and that he wanted me in my own store as soon as possible. One week before I was moved to my own store in Ashland #6729, I caught an employee who admitted to stealing at least $1750 from our store alone (she had transferred in from 2 other stores in our district). I then was promoted to Store Manager of store #6729 on May 22, 09. When I got there the store had been without a manager for about 2 ½ months, so it was 8 plan-o-grams behind, and just a mess. The Assistant Manager who has been there 5 years still cannot do a MAAP, and both the Asst. and Lead forced balanced their tills at the end of the night, just sticking any extra monies in an office drawer. Then if they were ever over that’s what they could pull from. The Asst. informed me that it just got to the point that when things were short, there was never any money in the little “till”. I tried to put a stop to this because I knew the extra money was going in someone’s pocket, but up to the day that I left for Managers School in Columbus OH, she was still bringing me her till to count with the forced slip on top. The day before I left for school I had made it clear that policies and procedures would be followed, or I would start the counseling process. My third key turned in her keys and walked off of her shift that day.
I started school on 6/15/09 after calling my DM (JIM HIKE), and making him aware of what had happened, and also alerting him that on my weekly statement it showed me short $500+ on a day two weeks prior, and that I was concerned because I had no record of this. It was also a day when my main printer was down, and that my credit/EBT machine was replaced on that side. His response was for me to take the statements to the school and maybe the instructor could explain it. In the meantime I had figured out that it was just that my EBT and credit card deposit had not hit that day. When I called to inform Jim of this for 2 days straight, he would not answer or return my calls.
Yesterday 6/19/09, at the end of my day of class, I was called out and told that I had a visitor. It was Jim Hike and the area Loss Prevention guy, Terry Serb. I was told that before I came to my store, there were NEVER, any transaction voids, and that he had gotten a report yesterday on me that I had done several 8-9, in the last several weeks. I told them that I had not done anything fraudulent because I have the logs from other keys having had to do them as well. Of course I couldn’t remember the details on each receipt, so Terry proceeds to tell me they already know everything except the why. He wanted me to admit to stealing whatever the amount came too, and then just be done with me. Now this store has no camera system, which I have begged for, so there is no way for me, or for that matter, them, to prove or disprove any wrong doing. I wrote a statement for them saying that I would willfully participate in any investigation, and that I felt that I was being discriminated against because I am the wife of a terminated previous manager.
This company has so many fishy practices, and they hide behind the “AT WILL” statement that we all sign at the beginning of our employee handbooks. My husband lost a $3000 bonus and 40 hours vacation. The other manager lost the same. When Terry was done reading my statement (I don’t believe that he knew that I was married to a former employee) he then said that he thought he would have to suspend me.
I have been nothing but faithful to this company, even after all that has happened. I would state under oath that I had nothing to do with any false anything. I find it strange that Dollar General employees a District Manager, who owns a bar that is stocked with Dollar General property, who patronizes and lives with known addicts, and the head is turned the other way. The company car sits in the front of that bar EVERY night.
I want my position back, I want my vacation back, I want my STARS reward (for the arrest of an employee who stole enough to get arrested for a felony) and I want an apology. Any questions or comments you can email me at [protected]@yahoo.com. Any one involved with the company, I welcome your calls or correspondence.

Sincerely,

Jessica Baker

2022 here and they are still doing the same [censored] to people after 2 1/2 years I was wrongfully terminated after I was harassed, threatened, called a liar and so much more all because I filed an HR complaint on my dm and proved my loss prevention manager to be incorrect twice in one day and then again another day. He is the type of man who says he is never wrong and damn sure don't want to be proven wrong by a woman.

I see all of these comments are from 2009 and I have to say it is 2022 and Dollar General still has NOT CHANGED! I worked for them for the last 2 1/2 years and was manager for 1 when I was wrongfully terminated. At first they tried to say I was being investigated and put on suspension for theft and when that did not hold up they fired me for failure to protect company assets which is absurd. If they want you gone they will find any and every way to get you gone. My position was given to someone else before the investigation even began or I was even notified. The day I was called in and put on suspension I was made to wait an hour half in my car with them in complete knowledge of me being out of my heart meds (which dg is the reason I'm on them) then once in the office where I was for over 2 hours I was threatened, denied the right to pick my kids up from school with him saying I would be immediately terminated, proved the theft he was accusing me of to be paid for which he said he did not care and I was a liar. I could go on and on but calling ADR and hr does no good when they will simply cover their own [censored] to prevent possible lawsuits and or termination of their own higher management. It is sad and pathetic that they can get away with doing this to people

Same story here. They harassed me over adjusting a price to match THEIR ad. They claimed it was a mistake that everyone knew about but failed to tell us. Needless to say, they retaliated after I said I was being harassed. Then everyone in management went against me because I said harassment was going on in our store to all the employees. I was forced to quit, now they are trying to sue me for a weird $350 for adjusting prices out of their own ad for the customers to honor THEIR OWN AD! Bunch of losers. Kevin Wagner is the DM and he covers up all the nonsense and protects this store manager so she can scream and yell at everyone. She's told me numerous times how worthless the employees are with very colorful language. I got tired of and told her to stop so then she started in on me and tried firing me. When I brought it up to the DM he said it was nonsense, then I'm harassed the next day at work by him and loss prevention claiming I was wrong for adjusting prices to match their own ad that wasn't ringing up right. These people need investigated big time!

I am a previous employee of Dollar General. I worked there since May, 2013. I was recently fired. The reason was because of failure to protect company assets. I was a key holder and I often closed the store nightly . My store manager claimed that I forgot to close the door to the safe. And even though all of the money was there including the tills, change fund and the deposit I was fired for leaving the safe door open. When I watched it on CCTV I couldn't determine that the door was open. Due to it being black and the store lights are on a timer and go off at 10:07 pm nightly. It was impossible to see the safe door. When I spoke to the district manager he said that when he reviewed CCTV he couldn't see the dial on the outside of the safe door. And he assumed that the door was open. He then proceeded to tell me that I no longer worked for the company. This was on December13th, 2016. Right before the holidays. Truly a bad time to be unemployed. They don't seem to appreciate when they have good people working for them. It's now January 2017 and I'm still unemployed. If you're looking for a job that expects you to work miracles for them and then your fired without any proof then Dollar General is the place for you. They should all be fired for false advertising. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I am going through a similar situation. I am calling HR everyday because I was terminated without knowing about it. I have been collecting unemployment and now they are saying I may have to pay it all back because DG terminated me without telling me.

Im a store manager ...Im currently under suspension pending investigation...it was said in our last meeting that they are firing anybody and everybody for anything and everything...Ok i will admit I did have someone in my store that wasnt a DG employee helping me. My DM told me to do what I had to do to get the job done, NO other stores had extra people to lend, no good apps, and i was running 200-300 under payroll a week WHAT A WASTE! Any store manager would agree, ya'll would die for that right? Anyways, there was NOTHING stolen from the store, I have camaras to prove that, during the conversation with LP, wait I failed to mention my DM had "quit" 2 days prior, who knows what really happened, ok...LP...he stated to me and I quote "So if I contact "DMs NAME" and remember I still have his number, he will tell me he said it was ok for you to work a non-DG employee?" I said "NO, he told me to do what I had to do to get the job done" so I did..YES its 110% against policy but either way if my store wasnt done I was losing my job, and if I got caught working the nonDG-employee I was losing my job. However, with the statement he made, contacting my former DM, means he would be discussing DG with a non-DG employee? HMMMMMM 2 wrongs dont make a right...Our region is well I dont know how to explain it, but I will say when you have around 9 DMs w/ the RM, also around 150 employees cleaning up 7 stores in a 48 hr time frame for a Kathleen visit, lets just put it out...would it be safe to say Renting Uhaul trucks and putting rolltainers FULL of product in them, taking them to a disclosed location for 24-48 hrs (until Kathleen was back home) WITHOUT a outgoing transfer AGAINST POLICY? That could fall under employee theft, it was removed from stores by DMs w/ RMs permission...ok so it was brought back...I saw it leave, but never saw it return...So I will lose my job for struggling in a store that cant keep a manager...I run a perfect store before I agreed to take this one...never any problems (after I got it model) I was one of the lucky ones...and DMs and RM will keep their...I see a problem w/ this...Not to mention that LP went outside and YELLED at one of my employees she wasnt even clocked in...I just dont get it guys...

I completely agree that Dollar General will terminate employees for no real valid reasons. I was a store manager for 81/2 years. I felt like this was the job I loved and the company I wanted to stay with for the rest of my life. There were upsets as in any job but overall I did enjoy it a lot. My inventories in my store were under 1.5% for the last few years. I felt like I was bringing the store into a good direction. I did have problems with my asst mgr. He never really got everything done that he was supposed to. I had asked my district managers for cameras every year to help me keep an eye on everything while I was off. I never got cameras. When your store does over a million dollars in sales and the economy is in turmoil and you can only have single coverage every day because you dont have the payroll hours then you know to expect a leap in theft percentages. I fully expected mine to be higher this year, just didnt expect to be fired for "failure to protect company assets". I was told by asset protection that it is all internal. Every employee was fired or suspended for theft. Only two employees admitted to taking something and paid for the item the next day. Left wallets at home or didnt have the cash on them or something. Not everyone was fired the same day which is what really makes no sense to me. The asst mgr and 3rd key were the first to go then 10 days later I was fired after working double shifts every day for those ten days trying to get the store through Christmas. 3 months after I was fired asset protection came in and 3 more people lost their jobs- one of them quit due to stress. How can they possibly fire for failure to protect company assets when they dont give us what we need to protect the assets? Cameras and more payroll so we arent by ourselves would be a good start. My store was robbed in August - the alarm didnt go off because the phone lines were cut so whoever did it had time to take anything and that time of year with all the stock we get in it could be unnoticed. I think they need to rethink how they set up the matrix so we arent in the stores alone and all stores should have cameras. After being fired I had talked to employees and found out that my asst always let them leave before he did. Always said he had to finish up paperwork- which he never touched the paperwork. I had to wait 31/2 months for unemployment to go through because it was denied. I was so far behind on bills and stressed because of it. I think the company could treat the employees so much better after all that we have done for them over the years. I didnt get my full pay on my last check even though my DM said I would. I had 39 hours in when I was terminated and still dont know how they figured up my last check. But not stressed any more trying to keep a store in order on minimal hours!

betting the corporate at Goldman Sachs and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co [KKR.UL] are not aware that those below mentioned FOUR employees are so abused! "The chains also save on marketing -- basically, by not doing any. They approach labor the same way: Dollar General and Family Dollar employ about four people per store. And all the chains rely on closeout and stock-overrun merchandise for a portion of sales." from Businessweek.com May 2004. . . 6 yrs ago and not many changes

It's all about the DM and up, and even the DM's get the boot VERY often, been a merchandiser in these stores since 2005 and that is longer than any manager OR DM for DG. Am currently under fire for OFFERING and offer accepted to PRAY with/for a very stressed out mgr... AFTER work was complete, BEFORE her store closed, and WHILE she was SITTING in her office, NOT WORKING! I am reported for saying THEY should put out particular merchandise, that I as a merchandiser have NOT done a particular job (because THEY did it themselves, therefore I did NOT get paid for MY job!)

Dollar General employee rudeness

Everytime I walk into my local dollar general I get to hear how one of the associates is continually saying stuff about me. This associate has tried to lie about me to get me banned and when that didn't work she has continued to try to make me feel uncomfortable in the store by spreading untrue accusations. This has been brought to the managers (Michela) attention that these are just bold face lies yet she continues to ask other employees to verify the information is true, when she finds out it isn't she says nomore about it to the other employees. Then that gets dropped and they have to start a new one and the cycle continues. I don't believe that as a customer I should feel belittled everytime I enter the store. If I cannot feel comfortable in your store and the management in them won't do nothing about it this was my last resort. If this does not get resolved and I don't recieve an appoligy (Written or a phone call) from the two employees (Barbara demmick and bambi english) that are doing this and the manager I wiil proceed with this issue to my lawyer and will take it to court, as for this is a form of harrassment that the manager in the store will not stop from happening.

For one it is kind of hard to say they aren't talkin about me when my name is mentioned. Also when I am confronted about the lies they say by the manager of the other store its pretty obvious. For another thing i have contacted corp. and have talked to the upper management who said they will get disiplined. glad you are not high school enough to copy and post the whole message.

I worked at dollar General for 10 months and the customers were all ###s. One woman cussed me out for 10 minutes and called me a liar because she did not like the price of transmission fluid. I said nothing except to say the price that was calculated by the register was correct.
But she was adamant that I was cheating her because she decided nothing in the store could be sold for more than one dollar. Said she would never shop there again and could get the fluid cheaper at Wal Mart. I checked there and it was 50 cents more than ours. She tried to have me fired for my attitude as well as trying to cheat her.

sorry ... but i haven't been in ONE dollar store that doesnt have the hours CLEARLY posted on the door. Who are you to think you are entitled to stay the extra 15 minutes? I have never worked retail or any job that had customers come in but I am still VERY aware of closing times and people who work these thankless jobs because I know they suck and I don't want to make their life suck more.

Also, who doesn't present a coupon BEFORE they finish an order? If you presented the coupon when you needed to, i'm sure it would have scanned. They hit the total out button, and im sorry, if it's not within the rules ( and yes, its always BEFORE TAX) then after it's totaled out, they cannot change it. I have had cashiers take my coupons, find they are within parameters and wouldn't scan but, since I was so nice would just key in the amount off for me because they can.

Also, who leaves the house WITHOUT their license? You are nuts, your whole post is nuts.Get a grip, realize that The customer is NOT always right and you are prime example. Learn some simple manners and stop being a darn jerk.

I had a Grand shopping experience at DOLLAR GENERAL in the new store in a small town. Several days ago I bought stuff there and they gave me a receipt-coupon for "Spend $20 get $5 off", a time limited offer. Tonight I went there at 8:38 PM (they close at 9 PM). There was not a single person in the store except the cashier and the seemed to be a Mr. Manager. They did not tell me they close soon nor they told me anything while I shopped there. Then when I was sure I had $20 worth of goods in my basket (I thought I had something like $21 in my basket) I went to the cash register and she rang and i gave her $20 bill because the total was $20.02 and I said there you go I get a $5 off and presented the coupon to her. The manager came and he told me I can't get $5 off because I have not purchased for $20. They apparently were not ready to give discounts to guys (me) who fail in arithmetics at school! He said the $20 must be pre-tax. OK I said I will get a couple more things, but he said he can not reverse the transaction. Perhaps those are the Rules, but they could be a little more flexible. So I told him I need the $5 cash to buy gasoline, so I can't purchase that stuff full price, but I said I will buy just SOME of the stuff and leave some. He told me I can't do that, they won't do that, then he told me it is already late and I told him I came in at 8:38 PM and they did not say a word to me that the store will close soon. Then he showed me a watch it was 9:15 PM and I suppose I shopped there for half hour or so, so I said I'm sorry customer always wrong, he was unhappy and told me he will give my money back, although I said I still need the stuff, he told me it can not be reversed as he already started the refund process, then I said I will just buy some of those and he said no, because they are already closed (with a customer still inside), but suddenly he told me he can not refund my money because he needs my ID my driver license, and I told him its in my car, he told me go get it, he opened the door, I then remembered that I left my DL at home ([censor] my bad), about 1/2 mile away from the store, he told me I could get a Police ticket for that, I told him to relax, no big deal, although of course I AM WRONG ALL THE WAY! I felt like a criminal, buying for $19.70 not making for the $5 discount and the total was $20.02 which I thought was fine, so for the difference of those $0.30 they could just make an exception and I could buy from them a LOT MORE in the future, and I already shopped there 3 times before, but NO he insisted to a NO and lose a customer because of 30c and all that other [censor]. So I said you are hurting your company's name and I will not shop there anymore and he told me that will be fine. Again. I am wrong, but the whole coupon thing sounded like a complicated GIMMICK. They got me, they can't refund because my DL is at home! Sorry! never happened before! I guess I ran excited to get a $5 off, which I was going to use to buy gasoline for my lawnmower. I was stuck there, I was hanging there for minutes not knowing what to do, because they got my money they won't sell me goods, they will not refund because I got no ID on me and they will not sell to me again because the damn store is NOW CLOSED! So I thought well all you got to do is to call the police and get me a ticket so I can get my money back and go home from this [censor]ing new store with no customers! Then he finally decided to give my money back and I still thought I should still buy but oh well, not, they are closed, as they said, then fock it and I left. That's it. And I went to a FAMILY DOLLAR (old dirty store nearby), it felt very old and very dirty after the new DOLLAR-GIMMICK-GENERAL store. And I bought some stuff there, but I did not find the other stuff I needed and I think now, how this frogging corporate UNFLEXIBLE foxhole works for the People? ;-)

What do people expect? A person is slave driven when they work for dollar general stores, they are mistreated, and receive condescending remarks from store managers making them feel like second or third class workers and citizens. Dollar General as a corporation treats all employees as trash. It's their big corporation way. So when you say dollar hires very rude people? well, it comes with the territory, the wages stink and they're treated like crap, and you expect someone to have a positive outlook and treat customers with respect with this happening? get real. Next time, go buy your stuff at Walmart, where employees are only treated marginally a bit, better.

Well, as someone who has worked at Dollar General for a while, I can help explain some of your concerns. I hate my job. My stomach churns every time I have to go there. I am a recent college grad who has not been able to find anything yet in this economy that has to do with my degree. I get sick of customers day in and day out who are rude and expect you to bow to them and their needs. Sometimes I don't feel like talking and greeting EVERYONE who walks into the door. While I am not outwardly rude, I may get that way when a customer has been rude first. I hate dealing with the public and customers every day. But in this economy, this is all I have. This is all any of the cashiers where I work have. So for the most part I put on a fake smile and act like I like you, when I probably really don't like you and don't care if you shop at Dollar General. Many of the cashiers are rude because of management and corporate issues. Dollar General does not do a good job of making the employees feel appreciated. They overwork you and underpay you for the crap you have to deal with on a daily basis. You might ask why people would work there if they know the place sucks and doesn't pay much...well, again, in some situations this is all people can get right now. When you see a new cashier every week, it's probably because the management team sucks and the cashier just couldn't take it anymore. I do agree that their are many Dollar General's who hire very rude people. In that situation...if you aren't going to call corporate and tell them, nothing is going to get done and you probably should just stay away from that store then. Anyways, that's just my take on why some cashiers are rude. Why don't you just try to be the nice customer who doesn't give any problems and dwell on every thing the cashier doesn't do-like greet you at the door or know what the hell is on sale. I hardly ever know what's on sale! Plus, if you paid attention to our prices- our sales suck! Half the time they advertise the regular price just to get you to buy it because dumb customers THINK it's on sale. haha

Dollar General searching employees

We had a manager's meeting today, and when my manager got back to the store he had a list of new procedures the employees are to follow to "prevent theft."
We are now expected to open purses and packages to let the video camera see inside them anytime we enter or leave the building.
We are to search the vendors when they come in to the store and leave.
Any "bulges" on our person are to to be exposed or "patted down" by the employee in the presence of a manager.
These requirements are on top of an etremely complex system of policy and procedure used to intimidate and scare employees who are mostly uneducated and working for minimum wage.

I almost tripped over some merchandise stacked in an isle at the Dollar General on East Main Street in Laurens, South Carolina last Wednesday. A dollar general employee, with shoulder length stringy, brown hair, thinly built, sort of short, and around 50 years old, gave me a dirty look, rolled her eyes and walked over to a customer who she had been talking to when I first got there, and told her that I tried to purposely trip and fall so I could get some free money. If that was my intention, I would have fallen, not almost fallen. What kind of nuts are operating Dollar Generals? I put back the items that I was going to buy and left. I will not ever shop there again!

Dollar General stores in Alachua County Florida is epidemic in its customer service and general store upkeep. The last straw was when I purchased a 4-pack of socks in which two pairs had numerous holes. Returning the socks I had to endure the store managers accusation that I pulled on the plastic tie and tore the holes myself. The fact was I carefully used a pair of scissors, taking extra care as not to do the very thing this manager accused me of doing.

Other events of disgust are one person in the entire store on a busy Sunday with at least a dozen in line at the checkout. Go ahead and take whatever you want. So much for the safety of their employees.

How about the time where the aisles were literally strewn with merchandise actually heaped into a disorganized pile of various products? One couldn't even go down that aisle due to the clutter.

Here's the last one. (And there's more but I'll spare you). I was purchasing a bottle of shampoo and the cashier asks me how much it costs. "I don't know, I didn't look" I said. The cashier says "why not you should know these things". Yea, like it's my mission in life to learn all Dollar General's prices.

Message to management: How about hiring people with normal cognitive powers and not ###s? Secondly, how about training your managers and staff in customer courtesy. I highly resent the attitude and treatment of your managers and employees. Dollar General website has no customer service link! Does anyone at this corporation even care?

We have an electrical company and have done some work for Dollar General. The work was completed in November of 2007 ann we still have not been paid for the work done. We have contacted them about this and they keep giving us the run around with forms to fill out. If you are a contractor and they contact you, you might want to think twice.

Dollar General employees standing directly outside the door smoking

In the state of Illinois the law is no smoking 15 ft. from the main entrance to any public building. The employees of the Dollar General Store # 09938, 412 Limit Street, Lincoln, Illinois can not get past the front door. No matter what time of day you drive by or actually stop at the store there is 1 if not more employees standing at the door smoking. You walk in the store and it smell like cigeratte smoke. Tonight I visited this store, 2 employees were standing directly outside the door smoking. I was looking at the greating cards so I was in the front part of the store. When a customer came up to the register an employee that was standing outside came in to check them out. Once they left she went back outside. At this point I think anyone could rob them blind and they would not even know it. Which I am sure it has happened. At one point I thought of complaining to the manager, but I believe the manager is as guilty as the other employees. I think my next step is to complain to the authorities of the town, maybe they will fine the employees or the store for breaking a Illinois No Smoking Ban. It is bad enough when you see a customer throw there cigerate down right before entering a store, but to have the employee violate such law.

I work at Dollar general & I know at our store the employees never smoke any where near the door but the customers do! The customers do not even have the respect to keep the door closed, they will smoke with it open & when you work the register & allergic to it, it is very difficult to breath. I have asthma. Not sure what ever happened to people having respect for others.

Dollar General racism

On 4/24/09, I went into Dollar general, my 12 year old was in game store just a few doors down, I told him when he got done if I wasn't in car to come over to Dollar General, When he came in store I was just heading to check out, and I turned to ask him if there was anything that he thought he needed (hygeine items), He said Mom I need something for my hair, so I looked around and did not see a section for his hair products, He is african american, So I said ask the lady up in front, so he did and she said it is 2 isle's over, so we looked and there was only perms for caucasian, So I went up to register and my son was behind me and I said Mamn I'm looking for hair products for my son's hair, she looked at him and then me and said well we probably don't carry it because there isn't that many of them down here. Needless to say I was like dumbfounded that she had just said this, My son looked at me and I calmly asked her for corporate number and told her it had nothing to do with her, just to keep a scene from happening. So then the shift leader came up and gave me number and also gave me the number to the store manager and said she would be back on 4/27/09. So on 4/27/09 I contacted her and she was very apologetic, and I told her that I was going to be calling corporate and that I would be bringing a letter by that I was also going to be faxing to corporate. So on 4/29/09, I picked up my son from school we went to dollar general to hand deliver the letter, So as we are both standing back there talking to manager, this employee comes around the corner and was told only to apologize and instead starts stating that she didn't make any racial slur and why did I tell her it had nothing to do with her. Needless to say this was very upsetting, my son walks out and I looked at store manager for her to stop this and she just looked at me with a smirk on her face. I guess they think nothing of this, since there is not alot of diversity in this area. So on 5/1/09 I contacted Corporate and was told that Justin Comer would be calling me back. On 5/8/09 still heard nothing so I called corporate again, The lady said "Mamn Justin said the District Manager will be calling you, as I'm on phone with Corporate my cell phone rings and it was Gene the district manager. He was very apoligetic, and said that they would be getting back with me by end of the following week, well today is 5/18/09 and still haven't heard anything. Any suggestions please email me at [protected]@hotmail.com

I'm sorry. but I have to agree with the employee on that one. As one who has worked for Dollar General for a few years (unfortunately!) I have many times had to explain to people why we do not carry African American hair products. Of course I don't use the words as she did, however, I do mention that there isn't enough interest in the product to carry it. I think I would just let this go...she may not have known the correct way to go about the issue because so many African Americans take things the wrong way.

And Carolyn dear dollar general corp has been getting away with firing people for the wrong things for years i hate to say it but unless they get a new regional and a new district manager you won't be hired back and usually when your let go they put down no rehire believe me i wished they gave me a another chance they always seem to take the word of part time employees rather than the ones actually working hard

I thoroughly agree that most of the grammar and writing on here is just deplorable. If you want respect and you want people to listen to you, then you have to communicate clearly. If the grammar in this post is any indication of how this person communicated on the job, well...

It DOES matter; it doesn't make a difference if it's a post on the internet or if it is direct business correspondence. Spelling, grammar and clarity do matter.

Dollar General bad customer service

I was in the Bronson, FL store the other day and normally I am greeted, but this day I was not. There was a guy at the register his name is Brian and he just gave me a nasty look. He was rambling under his breath and was steadally giving me a nasty look. I kept going about my business because I needed diapers for my baby. I walked around the store for about 15 mins and I noticed he was following me around. I went up to him and asked him why he was following me around he told me not to worry about it..I asked to speak to his manager he told me that he was the manager.. I have never had any problems with this store. I have shopped there for over 2 years. I think that this store needs to be inspected a little better..I could not believe the way I was getting treated. I put the diapers back and went to the gas station to buy them even though they are more expensive there. I would rather pay more money somewhere else than to deal with that stores bad customer service..

I was in the Stockton, MO branch of Dollar General, and saw a rack outside with clothes for 90% off. After I waited in line for five minutes before the manager opened another lane, I was told the pants that were on the rack, along with about nine other pair, that I picked out were not on sale. In the middle of my purchase she left the register and went outside, took the other pants off the rack and refused to give me the sale price. She then blamed the mistake on her staff. I do not complain often, but since Rosalee has become manager at this store I have seen her sit around while her staff is frantically running to do their work. I have also seen her reprimand her staff in front of customers in the middle of their check outs. In short she is not a good manager or co-worker and her customer service is left very wanting.

Dollar General store hours

I don't not understand how dollar general can be so greedy for the all mighty buck that they have to have thier stores open from 8:00 am until 9:00 pm 7 days a week! Since when does this store try to be like walmart?. The reason why dollar general is doing so well is because they aren't like walmart! Or I thought they weren't. There is no holidays that are concidered legal except christmas. So having the store open that late is not only stupid, but idiotic. Dollar general runs the risk of being robbed and don't seem to care about the employees that have to work the hours they now have to compensate thier lives for. I live in ny I know what i'm talking about. I will not give my name due to being fired from my job for being honest in how I feel. I know how big companies work. They want employee feed back, but if they hear something they don't like they find any excuse they can to fire that employee. The little people within the dollar general company have lives to. If it weren't for the little people being willing to work then the higher ups would have to really work to earn thier paychecks. You higher ups come up with these so called great ideas on making a profit, but don't stop to think of who really makes those profits work. Its's us little people and the customers who shop at dollar general. There was nothing wrong with having the ny based stores open 8:00 am until 9:00 pm monday-saturday and 9:00 until 8:00 pm on sunday. Sunday hours should have stayed as it was before the new hours were posted. 9:00 am until 6:00 pm. That gave cashiers, managers, and other employees time for nightly services at church! Now there is a problem with making services due to the hour change! I'm sure you higher ups can sleep at night, cause instead of counting sheep you could dollar bills! Ok end of my rant... Thank you for your time

I feel sorry for the employees. They don't have time to do the register and put away stock. The Dollar Tree is so clean and stock gets put away. They have a person just for that.

I too work for Dollar General. I'm grateful to have a job. The hours are long with 1 break. If you work for 5 hours, you don't get even a 10 minute break to do anything. My store is in the worst area. People stealing, fighting, loud and robbing others. The store down the street was robbed, manager was shot and killed. The store on the next corner was robbed and the clerk was shot along with 2 customers. They want you to, get back the stolen items, chase these people out of the store and risk your life at the same time. If I only knew what the store was like before I was hired... I never would've taken the job. I really don't want to quiet this job, because jobs are hard to find these days, but I'm getting really tired of working in danger and working my schedule and other's too. The manager NEVER have a complete schedule up. So you really can't schedule anything with your family. If you have any days off, he's calling you to cover someone else shift. I love to work their hours if they do not want them... but not if I'm feeling afraid to go to work.

I am a DG employee and I totally agree. Our store is open from 8am to 10ph EVERY day. The only days we've closed early since I've been there (whch has been over a year) is on Thanksgiving (8pm), Christmas Eve (6pm), and Easter (7pm). However, somehow our Store Manager seems to magically get every holiday, PLUS every Sunday off, only works 6-11 every Saturday and takes her week long vacation during the week of July 4th and since thats always a day or so after our inventotry, I think its malarky.

All of those who are commenting about "be glad to have a job" clearly have never worked for this company. Maybe you need to get a job application and begin work there at a Dollar General store, because you clearly have no clue as to what is going on here. Do a little research. Why does the company have such a high turn-over rate? If you know anything about management you know what that means. Why is Dollar General involved in so many labor board class action suits? You shouldnt judge a person's circumstances until you have once filled their shoes. This company is a horrible place to work and they do not care anything about their employees, nor do they have a problem letting these employees know how much they dont care. I am currently a store manager and wouldnt wish this job on anyone, whatever level of employment.

You got the job, obviosly because you need the money. Be thankful that you got one, and one that offers you a lot of hours. Work is work no matter what, have some work ethic. You don't see professional complaining when they get called in to work, like for example doctors. I have realized that a lot off people in this country are not thankfull for having a job, for having money in their pockets. I say so, because from my work years i have heard a lot of people complain and [censor], about work. I hear people say :: oh my god, i have to work those days:: than the following week when the pay check comes, i hear :: i have not money to pay my bills, i don't know what im going to do:: over all, people here want [censor] handed out to them in golden plates, with of course nothing return. Just one last thing i wan't to say to people, shut up, and do your job, and if you don't like to work on the holiday's than quit your job, oh and shut up.

The Dollar General may have low prices for some of their items compare to other stores; however, the employeees are extremely rude and fail to take responsibility for their actions!

(The following is a copy of my complaint)

I am writing in regards to an incident that occurred on October 16, 2010 between 8:00am and 9:30am. Until that day, I have never been to a Dollar General Store but I went to the Dollar General (Located on 501 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA) to take advantage of a $10 gift card for its grand opening, to use a $5 mail-in coupon after buying $20 worth of items, and to use three $1.00 off DG coupons for buying selected items.

After shopping around, I selected items that total about $26 (without including the tax). When I came to the register, the cashier (the store manager) rang up the items to $26.38. I then gave her the coupons. She proceed to scan the 3 $1.00 off DG coupons and place the coupons along with the $5 dollar mail-in coupons in the register. The total of the price came to $21.38. I then gave her the $10 gift card. The overall price came to $11.38. I thought something was odd so I asked the cashier if the $5 mail-in coupon and the three coupons were used. She quickly responded yes and said “waiting for the customer” in a hasty manner to get me to pay for my order. So, I paid and tried to look at the receipt in her presence but then she told that she scanned all the coupons and that I would see it on the receipt.

After stepping out the store, I went over the receipt and did my own calculations and realized that not all the coupons were used. Initially, I thought that the $5 coupon was not used so I went back into the store and told the cashier that I thought the $5 coupon was not used and that the total price should be around $8. She yelled at me, claiming that all the coupons were used and made sarcastic remarks about “not doing my math right” and “not thinking right” but went over the receipt with me.

She told me that the whole price came to $21.38 after using the coupons (the 3 $1.00 off) and that she then took $5 and the $10 off to get $11.38. Going off her logic, I said that $21 minus $10 would get me $11 and that if the $5 was used, the total price should be about $6. She then got nasty me and continued to say that all the coupons were used and they would show on the receipt. She then pointed to where it says $5 savings; however, I still pointed out that the price is not reflecting that if the price was about $21 before removing the $10 and the $5. I then asked for the store manager and then she told me that she was the store manager and remarked that I should just go to another store.

I continue to insist that the price was wrong if all the coupons were used. To show me that the price of $11.38 will appear, she voided my items, took out the $10 gift card that I used and the 3 $1.00 off coupons from the register, and then proceeded to scan my items like before. I realized then that the whole price was initially $26.38 and that the $5 was subtracted to get $21.38. She then used the $10 gift card to get $11.38. It was then that I realized that it was the three $1.00 off coupons that were not used and I pointed this out to her. She then claimed that she told me three times that the coupons could not be used with the $10 gift cards, yet she initially took the coupons from me, put them in the register, claimed that they did scanned, and allowed me to walk out of the store without them.

I asked her why since the coupons were directly from the Dollar General Store website and that nowhere on the $10 gift card and the $5.00 off coupon does it say that other coupons cannot be used. She replied “I don’t know” and that “maybe the system just won’t allow them.”

At that point, considering that she was the store manager and that I did not have time to go to another store, I decided to void some of the items that I planned to have the coupons pay for to get a total price of $5.88. She then helped pack my stuff and gave me back my coupons and I left the store.

She was right that the $5 was taken off; however, what concerns me was that she illegally took the three $1.00 coupons from me and would not have given them back have I have not pointed out the discrepancy in the price. She tried to twist it as if she knew that the three coupons were not included and that she told me but only gave them back when I came back to store right away to question the price. On the other hand, if she knew that the coupons did not scan but originally took the coupons, then she knowingly robbed from me.

Today may have been their grand opening and they may have been under a lot of stress; however, that does not excuse the store manager for being rude to not only me but to other customers who asked for help.

If there is a problem with your hours you should consider doing something like, oh, I don't know, submitting a documented availability sheet. Or you can consider looking for a new job.

What makes this such a moment of fail is that you are complaining about your hours at a job that YOU applied for. You should be grateful that not only do you have a job, you seem to be getting quite a bit of work without having to travel between one or two other jobs to pay for your bills. (Albeit, I'm assuming that's what this means since you didn't mention a second job.)

You have a life beyond your work? So do the other 8 billion people on the planet and I'm sure a good portion of them here and in other countries are much more grateful for the money they are bringing in. If your life outside of work is that much more important, then quit. But seriously, you are far from a martyr for doing what is in your job description (which I highly doubt you are accomplishing that.)

Greed for changing their hours? No. It's called a fallen economy and a GREAT business move. Too bad the people that were seriously affected by the economic fall, that got laid off of their jobs, that would give an arm and a leg to HAVE a job, don't work where you do. That's why service with a smile is a thing of the past. Because of people like you that take for granted what you have been PRIVILEGED to get.

That is all. I wish you (and your employers) the best of luck in the future.

Dollar General the new manger

I had been working for Dollar General since Septmber 2008 and i loved my job my boss at the time understude that i had two small children at home and really worked with me about my hours that i worked and taught me a lot when i got hired i became a third key holder so i was really happy. But then we had a new manger take over the store and she was opening every deposit that i made why i still dont understand that she also had me working every night never day shift and she never would work night shift. When my old boss left the distantant manger offord me the the assisant manger job with more pay and i say yes i ran the store 5 days by myself and did a good job then when the new manger came along I called the big boss back to ask about my pay because i never got it she said i was not the assisant and that it was up to the new boss if she wanted me to have that postion or not. I fell like i was used and i think somthing need to be done about it.I finally quit Febuary 3 because i has call my boss and told her i would be comming in late sue to my kids and she told me i was going to get wrote up for it and that i need to find somthing else to do with my kids she was upset because she had to leave early to take her husband to the docotors.. i feel like if she is the boss it is her job to stay there until i can get there.I also had a bad problem when one of the cashiers there was taking money from the cashregister and when i call her she wouldnt do anything about it so i called the big boss and she told me to just keep my eyes on her. I feel like they reather have people there who are stealing money and there products there instead of people like me who was doing so much for the company and trying to help out and stop the people who was stealing i couldn't work around that stuff anymore. And when i went to get my last check i didnt have one i have my clock in paper that shows i worked 14.50 and still to this day have never got paid for it. But my old buss sopsely got fired for cutting a persons time by 15 minutes.. So i really think you guys need to do somthing about this...PLEASE i loved my job and hate i quit but i could no longer put up with this kind of stuff going on and nobody seemed to care but me...

May the p0wers that be help you should you need FMLA. This market has the highest shrink in the Country if you believe the mumbo-jumbo corporate dishes out. I have never worked for a company that thinks employees steal m0re than the public does. Spend a friday at any store here and I promise you I can prove them wrong.
I have done all that has been asked of me. I worked long after I went to the doctor and was placed on light duty. Suddenly I was no longer allowed to work because there wasn't anything I could do that was considered light duty.

Long story short? They told Unemployment I quit. What? I am providing all paperwork and have been released to full duty and I quit? Are you kidding me? Oh and my manager whom I love working with has her hands tied. Corporate will not allow her to put me on the schedule. Why? She has no idea and has called our DM and RM repeatedely to find out why. I have recently accepted a position elsewhere and I feel for those like me that need to support a family and get caught up in the mess that is Dollar General

He was a ###ing slave driver. I hadn't gotten written up ONCE or had ANY problems, until he started. Apparantly, no store wanted him but they wouldn't firee him cause he was management, so they just transfered him around to different stores. This chinese wok head would barade you verbally, and put you through hell. He made me clean ###ing door hinges with a ###ing tooth brush! ###. I put up with him only cause I needed the job. I finally quit because he loop holed the union and stole my vacation hours, tried to say they "weren't in the system" so he gave my time to the other guy in my department. Complete bull ###. People like this guy should be BURNED ON A STAKE! Once more, he wouldn't give me full time, but the DAY my vacation wqas supposed to begin, he gives me full time hours. ###. Im glad I quit, I like my current job because atleast the management AND employees there are actually respectful to everyone around them.

I agree with this girl. I went through something quite similar. I was promoted to 3rd key back in February of this year and was doing everything that 3rd key was suppose to do the only thing that I had not done yet was close the store . But that is because my manager stated that the DM told her that 3rd key was not allowed to close the store. I did open with her on a few occasions. I had asked on a weekly basis what was going on with my pay and why I had yet to get any raise. Not just for the promotion but for the time I
had been there because according to the hand book after 6 months of service I was due a
raise. On a weekly basis I was given the same excuse " I have to talk to the DM" and until a
little over a week ago I had the 3rd set of keys to the store and was doing everything that
3rd key was suppose to do. Then the old assistant manager came back and boom somehow
I got kicked under the dang bus. When on Monday of this week I again asked her what
was going on and now why none of my codes worked I was told " that it was my fault"! I
asked her how it was my fault. She said that it was because I could not work the required
hours that are required for 3rd key.the funny thing was that I had been working the
hours that were required for 3rd key. I came in when I was suppose to and when ever they
needed me even on my days off. 3 weks ago I had to ask for some extra time off because my
husband and my son were both sick and I was taking my husband and my son back and
forth to the doctor. I even gave her the notes from the doctors. And on Friday of this past
week my husband had to have surgery granted the surgery went well for him. and he is
fine now. I thank God for that. But I am being punished for caring about my family. So
yesterday I called human resources to ask them about this situation and I was told that
I do not show in the central computer as ever being promoted. I said what? She stated it
again and I said that is not right I was promoted back in Feb, and since then I had been
doing everything that 3rd key is suppose to do including checking in vendors, doing
refunds, voids, bank drops, and running the reports for the drawers. something is not
right here. she told me to contact erc and they would contact the dm by email and go from there. I know that the old assistant manager who is now back in the store where I
worked had been promoted to manager and had her own store and the new dm basically
kicked her back down the ladder and back to our store because the guy filed a complaint
with erc, and erc just sent the email to the dm. there is alot of problems with dg and I have
seen it first hand and have heard our manager talk bad about other managers, and employees. I do not think that this kind of behavior by people in charge is right. I have even seen our manager call and cuss out one of the other assistants and complain because
they could not or would not drop what they were doing and run to the store so she could
go home because she had a headach or she didnt feel good. Total sht with dg. they work
you like a dog . the good employees they screw over and use and lie to. and want to only
keep the ones that like to steal, call in all the time and are just plain lazy. it is total bs...

I used to work for Dollar General in Chariton, Iowa and my boss was great!
Everyone I worked with were hard workers, kept the shelves stocked, the room that held all the inventory was well organized and the store was clean and not cluttered... It was actually FUN to work there! BUT when I see all the complaints here on this site, it infuriates me as to why corporate would allow this in some of their stores...a clean and well organized business will no doubt bring in more customers and in turn make more money AND treating the employees with dignity and respect will provide a better working environment for all thus again bringing in more customers, making more money...isn't this the whole concept? Corporate is more interested in $$$$ than they are in their employees, which is sad! It should all go hand in hand... All these complaints needs to be brought to the attention of the BIG GUYS...I believe in the chain of command but sometimes it's necessary to go over their heads and go to the Big Kahuna!
With the economy the way it is now, I would think that the dollar stores are doing more business than ever before and qualified personnel need to be instilled instead of positon hungry mongrels with no respect for her/his employees...good luck to you all!

I agree, Kelly! You all need to band together and fight for what is right! They've gotten away with it for so long that it's the norm for them ... they need to be stopped! I'm not a lawyer but I do know that Iowa is a right to hire and fire state, which stinks! shavon, sounds like they used you to me! This new boss seems to want corrupt employees instead of ones that go by the book...I'm wondering if that's how this new boss got her position? I mean, sounds like maybe you were a threat to her in some way in HER mind and she was trying to run you out of the store...It's too bad when they won't uphold their devoted employees.

Jason, somehow I find it hard to believe you are 17... what's it to you anyway that these people are having complaints about Dollar General UNLESS you are in management yourself or a BRAT of management...I see NO complaints from you about Dollar General on this forum post but you sure have a lot to say about the ones that have a ligitimate "gripe" with the company...every word that comes out of your mouth is against those that have complaints...AND you think just because of ones sexual preference that it affects their work performance? Dollar General employees mouth

It was by far the worsest expirience yet in dollar general and please excuse the capital letters and the abscence of periods and exclamation points. First thing I hear is dont skate in the store. Dollar General open on easter!

Http://www.Thepetitionsite.com/2/stop-dollar-general-from-being-open-on-easter — sign here, copy and paste the code in your browser. Dollar general has now decided to stay open and make its employees work on easter! For many years, the only days dollar general were closed were on the days of the lord: christmas and easter. Many of us thought they were pushing it by being open on thanksgiving, but this is ridiculous! Easter, as well as christmas, is a time for our lord, and family. Even those who do not believe in god should respect the beliefs of others and keep this day holy.
It's bad enough that dollar general stores stay open later than 6pm on sundays, but now they want to force employees to work on a day that should be spent with family and worshipping their lord?

This is an outrage. I am truly disappointed with this company and its decision to disrespect so many of its employees' religious beliefs. If you agree, please sign this petition, and we'll get it back to corporate. Also, do all you can to keep your store from being open on easter.
Do not shop at dollar general stores on easter.
Let's let them (And all other stores open on easter) know that this is wrong. Spread the word by passing this on to everyone you know!

Please, even if you don't believe in god, show your respect for others' beliefs by participating in this. Sign this petition and refuse to shop at dollar general on easter. Thank you.

Deuteronomy 12:28-31

"28 Be careful to obey all my commands, so that all will go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and pleasing to the Lord your God.

29 “When the Lord your God goes ahead of you and destroys the nations and you drive them out and live in their land, 30 do not fall into the trap of following their customs and worshiping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations worship their gods? I want to follow their example.’ 31 You must not worship the Lord your God the way the other nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods every detestable act that the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to their gods."

Looks like you did find time to use google oparch. Calling someone a [censored] that is a [censored] does not weaken my arguement. It's about work ethics, profit and corporate's bad decisions period. @LiL3. There is no arguement. You just are clueless to the functions of a retail store and how profits/losses determine if your employees get more hours, raises, and what not. Then to top that all off we get to listen to upper management ### about our ratios when it is out of our hands. That's about as far as I'll explain it to you since you'll obviously never understand the corporate ladder

The profit of my store IS my business because overhead effects my budget for my store and if it is really low like on Easter then YES it is my concern [censored]! Are you an Avon lady or something?

@aggrevated hopper. Actually no. Most of our customers were not coming out of church at 5pm just people with foodstamps popping in to see if our EASTER candy (should we dare call it that) was 50% off yet then leaving. It's fine though. I was paid double time off of them and did little to nothing all shift. So I guess it was a paid holiday for me! LOL!

Yes there is proof. It is called our daily profit report, LiL3. It was simply a bad choice becuase the competitor was open. Hey I got paid double time, but missed our family dinner. I'll bet you stuffed your face with your family though didn't you?

My point is and still is if it is all about the corporate dollar then they loss their ### remaining open that entire day. You sound like a brown nosing cheerleader! " Hi Mellon...sorry I didn't properly acknowlege you sooner". HA. A union will fix these types of corporations. They dread it! Other cultures DO get to request their holidays off by the way because they are NOT normally requested off due to it NOT being our native culture! Smart one!

Dollar General fraud and cheating

On February 10 I bought a 'Wireless Gear' mobile phone charger 'for use with all Motorola, Nextel, and Blackberry phones' at Dollar General. I paid $7.00 plus tax. The charger would not work with my Motorola TFC139B. The next day I carried it back to Dollar General.

I was told that Dollar general does not warrant electronics, and that I would have to call the technical 'support' number on the merchandise box. Reluctantly, I did. There was no toll-free number, so I decided to spend a little extra to confirm what I already knew--'there is no one available to take your call.' This was on Wednesday morning at 9:00 and 9:20 AM CDT. If there is no one at these times, most likely there will never be.

But there was a remedy! I could return the merchandise (at my expense) to the importer with a $5.95 shipping/handling fee under the terms of 'ESI Cases and Accessories'' 'lifetime warranty.' No thanks! Being ripped off once in one week is enough.

In effect, Dollar General is selling cheap electronics at a not-too-cheap price with absolutely no customer support. Dollar General will not warrant it. The 'world's largest manufacturer of cellular and IPod accessories' did not have anyone to answer the phone in the middle of the week, but they have an air-tight 'lifetime warranty, ' if you are sucker enough to exercise it.

Over the past ten years, I have bought a little over $200.00 in electronic merchandise at Dollar General. Never again! That will cost them a lot more than seven bucks. How many hundreds or thousands of people will read this? How many of them will avoid electronic merchandise at Dollar General? Circuit City shot itself in the foot with this kind of customer service. Dollar General, take heed.

The two comments above from Dollar General employees are a perfect example of how inconsistent Dollar General is - one person at one store believes that this return is acceptable while another at presumably another store believes it's not because some twobit district manager somewhere said so. I've decided to stop shopping at DG myself, after I was recently asked to show ID for a ONE DOLLAR PURCHASE on a Visa card because "it's our policy, we have to ask" even though I've NEVER been asked for ID before and they asked NOBODY else for ID who was in line in front of me using credit cards for signature-based purchases. I have news for you, Dollar General: With the lackluster product variety you have and in our current economic climate, you would be foolish to drive customers away with on-the-fly policymaking that does nothing but drive shoppers away. You need us more than we need you.

I work for DG as well and the policy is that we DO NOT refund car chargers or any other items that have been opened, receipt or not. That is per my DM per her RM and so forth. There are too many returns on stuff like that as it is and our stores were taking to big a loss to keep doing it.

But that doesn't mean I sucker customers into buying products even I know probably won't work for them. Since we sell only four types of chargers, I make sure I ask a few questions before recommending one and my associates are instructed to do the same. These chargers will not work on the newer models of the brands in particular, for example and we point this out. The same goes for Tracfones. They do not work in my area and anytime a customer asks about one, I don't recommend it to them.

But then you have the ones who won't take your advice, buy the product anyway and come back the next day wanting their money back. I tell them no. They complain and I still refuse. My DM said no and I'm not losing my job over excessive Tracfone returns. We lose money on them when we take them back. It's the reason they had to have the big promotion where you got the phone for a penny if you bought $30 in minutes. Too many people were returning them, ultimately costing DG money as the companies had to repackage a non-defective product and in turn passed the cost back to DG.

I work for Dollar General. There is NO policy that states you can't return a cell phone charger or an eletrical product, as long as you have the reciept. If you don't have a reciept you may exchange it for any merchandise.Who ever was working at that store should be flogged. I let customers return cell phone chargers and other products on a daily basis. Dollar General is commited to making customers happy. The only thing we don't do returns on are cell phone minutes and Zone games that have been opened (Zone games can be exchanged for the same Zone game ) I would ask for Dollar Generals corporate customer service number !

Dollar General consumer threatened

My Mother-in-law ( Faye) and I (Mindy) went to the Dollar General to get a few last items we forgot in our shopping. As we went to check out. Faye was going to pay first. She handed a $100 bill to pay because that is all she had on her. The cashier looked at the dollar bill and just kept looking for a long time and could not look at us in the face and said" This is a fake bill...It does not have a line through it or a face" and Faye ( nicley) said" well it better not be because it is an old dollar"..." she did not even look at the date or dollar again and said that she would have to keep the bill and she can not give it back to her..Faye said "why can 't I have it back"...and she said she will have to call police and it was policy...so we said that we will wait for the police and ask them . Well as she was calling the police she told us "whether you talk to the police or not, you will NOT GET IT BACK". She was so rude and could not look at us. We then found out she was the " Store Manager"... I did not appreciate her mean and threatening words when the police have not come to verify it yet...my mother in law was livid and really upset. When the cop came, he looked at the bill and told the store manager ( name Sherrie) that it is okay because being that the bill is older, m it will not mark with the pens because it is an older dollar...so he said it is our dollar and we could have it back...she was kinda rude to the cop too and I told the cop myself that i understand the policy deal but her attitude did not have to be that way and could of been handled differently. She still after all of that could not even apologize to Faye and she went to the back of the store...talk about customer service..how do people get away with treating customers this way and still have a job?

WE WILL NEVER BE BACK IN THAT STORE AGAIN AND WE WILL TELL ALL OF OUR FRIENDS HOW WE WERE TREATED IN THAT STORE AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT WE SEE!

I am sorry you were treated with such disregard. I work at Dollar General in MS and I would never treat a consumer with such disrepect. I am only a cashier but feel the urge to apologize for poor management skills in your store area.
I feel companies should look into complaints such as this and make the employee go through a trainging course if nothing else... to be a better service to the community that pays for the checks we receive each week.
Once again maam I am very sorry you were treated like this.

Dollar General worked through my lunch with no pay

Where I work the management robb people of their hours. I was not given a lunch break and I have my slip to prove that I worked 8 hours and 15 minutes straight. On that same day my manager fixed my time on the computer to show that I did clock out for a lunch. I called the # on the slip to only wait and find out that they really don't do anything. I am now calling another # hoping that someone can do something before they try to get rid of me. They jump on other tills and people come out short at the end of the day. They get items at red cart prices for them and their families. They get away with a lot and people like us just end up quitting or getting fired when we make our complaints. Headquarters need to make a lot of changes in the system. We are not robbing the stores, the customers are not robbing the stores, it's Dollar General's own Management that is robbing the stores in a slick kind of way. "O" and I do work to the best of my abilities, I am on time, I do not call in, I do not drink, I do not smoke, I am a hard worker that deserves better. I am complaining about store #7425 in San Antonio, Texas. Managements are Veronica T. and Mario H. ...

After three weeks I'm out after having the exact same problems at my store. The job is nothing like the ridiculous films you're forced to watch on your first day. On top of missing a few of my breaks and lunches, sweeping and mopping (when only two people close like you and your manager, and they sit behind a comfy desk while you bust your booty!). I was also snapped at like a child (once in front of customers) and had as many as 7 or 8 customers in line waiting to be checked out because this same manager was too busy stocking shelves to open up his register. My Manager was also using my register when I did go on break one day instead of using his. So much to document so little time. In any case, HE is still there with a nice cushy job while I go looking for another. Thought I was going to get some support from my Assistant Manager but as of now I've heard nothing. It's an absolute shame what some people are capable of getting away with.

Dollar General hiring practices

Why is the manager of store number 07395 being allowed to hire her own sister to work in the same store in clear violation of company policy . The store management has been damaging products and putting them on half price racks to buy them later every since I started working there in Feb. of last year. I think that is what was behind my getting fired .I told people what was going on. That and the fact that I pointed out the fact that the assistant manager was stealing the lit. fund money and she got fired. The manager didn't like that at all.The rest You will find out when my lawyer brings suit against Dollar General.

Carole, that was REAL smart pointing out the theft by management TO management and NOT expecting some sort of reprisal.

And, elpasotexastejano is absolutely correct...if you have money to hire an attorney to take on a corporation, what the hell are you doing working for "Dollar General" in the first place?

If you're going to bluff, you have to make sure it's a believable bluff. Yours isn't.

If you ever have a thought or a brain cell that lives, you might actually make something of yourself. But then again...I doubt it.

Who care about dollar general, if you had $5000 to hire a lawyer in the first place you wouldn’t be working for a dollar store making minimum wage. Leave the Dammm place before you get old and trapped there like your managers did.

Dollar General wrongful termination/discrimnation

I worked for the doolar general 6 mth n for the first couple of months I workd at the onein arlington tx off randoll mill n I got moved to the one in pantego, when I started working there my life became a living hell. The manager (Teresa) for one fired me while I was on my maternity leave for no reason at all, in fact she wouldnt even give me one in I thought it was wrong because she had a girl who was the same race as her which is white working for her n she used to leave the job in the middle of her shift without even telling anybody. And she has also stoling from the job she would come in out of dress code and teresa never fired her! The only reason why she actually let her go was because the dm told her she had to! Teresa has fire a girl of my race for going to chruch on a sunday, when I was 7mth pregnant she made me work almost 2 wks without any days off which caused me to start having labor pains while I was at the register. And she wouldnt let me go sit doen or anything unless I was lookin like I was bout to pass out! There was a time when I was at the register and I started to get really hot and dizzy and I was bout to pass out and she didnt say anything the customers had to lether know and to let me take a break, the customer was even nice enough to buy me somthing to eat and drink! Teresa wouldnt even let me go home and my asst manager shamica can tell u everything im tellin you. There was time when teresa called to the job drunk and was talking bout me to shamica, she said teresa told her she told aother manager at a diffrent store "yea, I got a pregnant girl working at my store and I make her mop and everything" I felt that was very disrespectful toward me! And she already have a other employee who works there who is going to file a lawsuit against her beacause teresa gave away her hours! And this is my first step to get rid of her from being a manager anywhere esle... And if nothing will be done about this I will be taking legal action! And if u need proof of the discrimination I have witnesses

Yeah, there's this little thing called the "Family and Medical Leave Act" which says a company cannot fire you for going out on maternity leave. Granted, there's paper work to be filed and such, but if all that was done (and they have to do it, they cannot refuse to do this) then you get your job back after six weeks.
