idenity theft
I was contacted by a bill collector in Sept. 20014 regarding an outstanding bill from NYC's Con Edison. They claim somebody opened account under my name and SSN in 2004 and have unpaid bills for almost $2, 000. Account was opened with no supporting documentation, just a name and SSN. The bill collector posted negative info to the credit agencies prior to contacting me. I submitted FTC report and police report and all kinds of proofs that I resided somewhere else. Con Edison rep called me a liar and was exceedingly hostile.

over charge to landlord
My tenant closed her Coned account but still using the premise
4 months. Now I open the coned account but coned put the last 4 months electric
usage onto my bill. And force me to pay for it. I called Coned about tenant account. I was
told me it is not of your business. Because I am not the account owner. I don't
get any information of Tenant's utility account.
I have no ideal tenant close their account and still using it and the bill put
in to landlord when l open my account
later( tenant move out).

falsely high bill
For the period of 04/04/2014 - 05/05/2014, Con Edison has assessed a charge for our gas bill that is extremely and undeniably high for this home, certainly considering the usage prior to and after this charge was assessed. The amount charged is $1, 959.86. Below is a summary outlining billing history from October 2013 - this clearly shows a trend that does not support ConEd's billing in April 2014. I am currently renting the first floor of the home where the bill was assessed, and despite my landlord's constant attention to this matter, Con Edison has done nothing. He has contacted Con Edison multiple times, has proven that this cannot be an accurate reading based on typical usage, and yet they insist on full payment. I have now just received my first "late charge" in regard to this outrageous bill, and I cannot stand for this any longer.
The address of this home is 346 King Street, Port Chester, NY, 10573. Please contact the landlord, Lance Larsen, at [protected] with any questions regarding this complaint. We cannot afford to, and simply will not, pay this outrageous bill.

overcharges
I have been on the tel. for the last 3 days, with the Con Ed. customer service trying to understand the over charges without recieving any help.
I have tried to speak to a supervisor, waiting for over 30 minutes without reaching one. All i have been asking is the to remove a $120.00 late fee which they call it a deposit . I am very unhappy about the way the do the meter reading and the way they handel clients. The obligatory high delivery charges even if we are not using any electricity. I have been discoroged again this morning as i was explaining with kindness in my voice, trying to make the customer service aware of my sitiuation.

No power to entrnce of complex for over a month.
supply rate tripled
Just got my bill today, and my supply charge went from 7.2 cents/kwh for the same month in 2013 to 21.7 cents per kwh this year. Is anyone monitoring this monopoly? My delivery and gas were within reasonable range but my bill skyrocketed just to fill their pockets! I am planning on taking this to small claims court for fraud. Lets see them lie their way out of this one. Hopefully i can get back my $350.

SANDRA CICCONE KOPPELSON
My Con Edison bill is invariably in the $58.00 to $59.00 range.
In February my bill was an astronomical $90.00 plus.
My electricity use includes two lamps each holding a 60 watt bulb, and a kitchen light fixture holding a 60 watt bulb. I want retribution NOW. THIS IS CORPORATE FRAUD OF THE MOST CRIMINAL KIND.
i live in a one room studio ( No kitchen ) my bill normally is 40 dollars a month now its 120 dollars, i see a list of 10 taxes and each one mirrors the other. I know my meter reader is not making 100, 000 a year, so where is the money going ? My electrical outlets are still the two prong kind from 1920 so how can con ed justify tripling my bill ? all my bulbs are energy effecient for christ sakes my living room bulb is 7 watts total, my bedrrom is 12 and my bathroom is 4 watts if we continue to pay their rates they will get so powerful all competing electrical companies will be taken out. in this day and age electricity should be free
hiking rates
The latest bill we received from ConEd for the month of January has rate of over 20 cents per kWh. It is more than double the standard rate we have been receiving and paying over the last few months. When I called them I received an answer that this was just the market rate for that month and there is nothing they can do about. It seems to me they are trying to make up for the shortfall they had in 2013 due to repairs after Sandy. I know that our building was not billed for usage for some time as we had broken boxes.
The rate per kWh has never been this high

extra payment
I was on public assistance and fell behind on my light around $600-$800 when i asked my case worker for assistance; which I got that payment resulted in public assistance paying my light bill every month and they would re-coup it from my cash allowance. Last year i got off public assistance and was paying all my bills including my light bill. i fell behind and went on a payment plan with only $300 left to pay Con Edison sent me a bill for over $2500. I went to their sub station and inquire why and i was told that the money HRA had paid them when I was on public assistance when I came out of the program They had to return the money so I am now liable to pay that money. I went to HRA got A print out of all money that was paid to Con Edison and was told no money was return to the agency whatever they paid Con Edison on my behalf I don't have pay but Con, Edison is insisting that I pay this money. Can You Help? They have also added a Esco electricity supply to my bill that is sky rocking my bill before i only had Con Edison Now I have both Con Edison and Esco Electric. Please help because due to this situation I to return to HRA to try to get public assistance but was denied. thank you
unethical business, fraudulent
Con Edison Should be Shut Down for Ripping Off Hard Working New Yorkers, I wish in my Lifetime i could see this Monopoly and Crooked, Pathetic, and Incompetant Company be brought down by the Federal Government, This company is Horrendous, What they do and have been doing to New Yorkers is Illegal, Why won't any Legislation Slam this Company into the Ground, It is Legalized Stealing? What is wrong with this Country, When a Company as Massive as Con Ed can simply Rape the People of this Great City Year after Year ? We cant switch, as they have their Hands On everything and still have 100% control on Meter Reading and Billing, And they Simply have the Worst Customer Service Representatives that take over 30 Minutes to speak with, They have Rolls Royce prices and Send out Ridiculous, Incorrect Bills, and they demand you pay it or you will not have Electric? How can they continue to get away with this? Once again, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY, This company needs to be Brought Down. Please Someone Help, we need the Government to Step In .
Kevin Burke CEO Con Edison 2011 Keep in mind these figures come from Forbes3 years ago

There is a pension riding on the gross earnings. This is why you have to walk around with your winter jacket on inside your house.
If you live in areas where taxes are higher you will pay much higher rates so others can get subsidized rates. There is no reason that justifies why a CEO needs this much money.
Which controlling body under New York State regulates Con Edison? Who ultimately decides if rates can be increased?
Con Edison is regulated by the New York State Public Service Commission and has been since 1996.
Be rest assured that the New York State Public Service Commission consists of previous Con Edison employees.
In particular those who are key players and decision makers. Its a revolving door. Sound familiar ? Yes just like DC and wall street.
The dollar is worth roughly 2¢ today Feb 2014. The only way to reduce your rates is to physically move. We are all tired of living for other peoples pensions.
what do you not understand con ed has to be stopped I pay every month 4-5 hundred could be more or less but usually more.
Their billing is estimated and when adjustments are made they are questionable. This is only to confuse you. It is an outrahge. Every time I have the opportunity to have all my bills with meter readings I can 99 out of a hundred times find mathematical errors. Simply add things kilo and such multiply it by the rate 8.999% . Do this for a few months and then add up what you paid them and I can almost guarantee you will have been billed more than you should have. They are really going free willy with these delivery charges aren't they cute they will solve the opportunity for us to save by having choice by monopolizing delivery charges and sending them to the moon and exactly what are these % rates related to 11.999 % for delivery. All the talk about how the middle east is the culprit making our energy pricing skyrocket or those oil companies or the carbon footprinting now it is that we have to pay to clean and maintain their system. Why? I have to pay for my own . Why does their profit not go to expansion and upkeep to wring us out dry we should pay for them to maintain ? Stop giving out millions in pay for your ceo and friends . That is not how it should work. Use the money for the maintaining to keep your own business and then give out higher pay or bonuses. This is backwards and corrupt.
Fraudulent Activities against Consumers
My mother has been a Con-Ed client since 1985 and has not seen a bill less than $100.00. Her bill does not descend this amount, but only rises, and has lived in scorching hot summers without air conditioning. We have reported this issue numerous times to the company and they have done nothing to resolve the matter. We are given 1, 000s of excuses as to why her electrical charges are ridiculously high. At age 60, my mother is found constantly receiving TURN-OFF NOTICES. According to Con-Ed she is on the lowest rate plan and that their supplier charges are cheaper than most suppliers. Con Ed's rate is at 11.9 and other suppliers are at 8.9 which makes all the difference when multiplying numbers.
My mother has been a victim of Con-Ed fraud for 27 years! Her light fixtures are constantly blinking as if someone else in the building is feeding off of her electricity. My mother is an ailing disabled individual who cannot suffer the heat because of her COPD and Chronic Asthmatic condition. She suffers from heat strokes when exposed to excessive heat. She lives her life in darkness in order to conserve energy and to date her bill seldom reflects the energy that she attempts to save.
Con-Ed consumers need to come together to file suit against this con supplying giant!

overcharging/high billing
For years I have been complaining about how high my con edison bills have been every month. I live in a very small apartment and my bills every month range from $500 - $800. It makes no since. I hardly have anything in my house that would require so much electric usage. I have a very low income and cannot afford to pay so much. Con Edison is ripping people off. It is not fair. I've asked Con Edison to come to the house to see if there is anything wrong in the apartment that is causing this problem and I am getting no help from them. In January they installed new meters and since then my bills have been $800 a month. I believe that something crooked is going on here. There has got to be someone who can help me with this issue. I may be homeless because of this problem which is causing a great deal of financial hardship for me and my family.

I have the exact same problem ! I live in a 1100 sq foot apartment and also don't have many appliances and my bill is between 600-800 per month . I have requested them yo come and inspect the premises and they refuse . Can we file a law suit against con ed ?
bills that can't add up
Con Edison has been overcharging me for years.I just kept on paying. Now I am on Disability and for the last three years my bill fluctuates between 250 an 300 dollars monthly ! Two adults in a 4 room apt who don't even.
have cable, internet or phone services.I use an electrical stimulator (battery operated /needs charging) for crippling osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and fibromyalgia.I also have copd and heart issues. They had the audacity to turn me off during the summer w/o warning for not making a deposit on a payment agreement. All my food spoiled (I receive food stamps)and I had to get out of the house due to my breathing problems. They made me wait four days and then refused to replace my food./After the fact it turned out I actually did not need the payment. They still refused to replace my food. They are getting ready to turn me off again because they claim I missed a payment agreement, .When I contacted them to dispute this and recorded my payments. They asked me not to email them with regard to the account any further, and that my turnoff is pending. Some company. If anyone knows what I can do, [lease contact me at [protected]@aol.comI am about to lose my heat source.I had a lot of problems this month .I re certified for food stamps and still received none for this month as of yet.Con ED does not care.

billing scam
Not only has Con Ed billing skyrocketed with added bogus surcharges, they scam you when you need to vacate your last residence. I moved over 3 months ago, and called over 1 week prior to schedule a shut off date. I explained to them that I needed to close my account on 7/15, and they offered me a reading on 7/15 to ensure I do not get any extra billing. Indeed, when I vacated on 7/15, the electricity was shut off, and shortly after, I received a bill dating to 7/19. I called Con Ed again to ensure the account was closed, and was assure that it was. Now it is late Oct, and I got another bill from Con Ed for the entire month of August, and half of July. They even tacked on a late charge because they never sent the first bill out. And it should not have been sent out, because I had closed my account back in July.
When I confronted them, they say we never shut off residential services until a new tenant request service. Con Ed tells me the only way the bill could be adjusted is if my former landlord sends out a notarized statement that I had indeed vacated the premise at a certain time. Which landlord would do that 3 months after a tenant has vacated the premise, and face the possibility of yet another bill they would have to pay? That means if the residence was left empty, Con Ed will make the last tenant responsible for all charges. This is a money scam masked as incompetence. It should be illegal. It is because they have such a monopoly in NYC that they are still able to run this scam. If anything should be deregulated, perhaps Con Ed should.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense if you called to close your account why didn't you ask them to review the call that you placed back in July? I had an issue once luckily all of the calls you make to them are recorded! So ask them to review the call you placed in July if you spoke to one of their employees they should be able to pull the call that you made proving that you asked to close the account.
ignoring problem
I have for years been having to call con ed about electric blinking on and off long enough to have to reset many timers, cablevision box etc. I keep being told a ticket is written and someone will contact you. it never happens. they say I need electrician, which I had one check my house and found nothing on my end, but neighbors does same thing. I have been on them now since feb and still have no-one reply or check situation. We also know that it is a switching problem con ed has. what does it take to get an answer?
Thank you Jim Galbraith
mandatory shutdown of electrical service on july 22, 2011 during the summer heatwave
Today I arrived to my New York City Housing Authority development Taft Houses only to find my wheel chair bound neighbor sitting outside in front of the building at 11:26 PM . Several other disabled and/or elder people had no option but to sit outside and wait for someone to fix the elevators on a 19 story building. My neighbor is an amputated diabetic. On most of the floors of my building you see wheelchairs parked in the hallways. We also have so many elderly people living in my building; consequently one might see a funeral service posting about neighbor who has recently passed-away on a regular basis. I decided to wait it out with my ill neighbor in hopes that our elevators will be put back on so that she could make her way up to the 9th floor. As residents of Taft Houses waited for someone to come and help them; people mentioned that they called NYCHA Maintenance, 311 and Con Ed. Finally two electricians told us that the building did not have enough power to support both the elevators and the all of the Air Conditioning Units that were definitely on blast due to the heat wave . I instantly asked that they call a supervisor or someone to help my poor disabled neighbor to her home. The police arrived and told us the Con Edison requested NYCHA shut down elevator and conserve energy because they wanted to avoid outages. I understand that it could be worse we could have no electricity whatsoever, but what I don't understand is how Con Edison justifies cutting the elevators in a building were the majority of the residents are older than 60-80 years old, and suffering from life threatening illnesses daily. Why not give out generators to NYCHA developments so that Con Ed can sustain their megawatts at a normal rate? Why not contact huge corporate offices in the city like Vornado Buildings and ask them to send everyone home and shut down the operation at other sites? Why do the helpless have to suffer? I know that life is about survival of the fittest but shouldn't real fittest characters care about the hopeless. Lift as you climb people! The police officer made it a point to mention to me that he lived in a private building with four elevator that remain working fine. The interruptions from Con Ed at private building or office buildings are unheard of. The officer said his Air Conditioner was on high waiting for him, furthermore he suggested that my neighbor go to a cooling center. The woman facing more amputation has to also look forward to go to a shelter for cooling eventhough she has her own shelter and her own cooling system. I feel that Con Ed unjustly singled out NYCHA's highrises because we are the poor and defenseless against big company's. We also use a-lot of electricity granted but so does the rest of manhattan so, why must we be singled out. I would be happy with Solar panels that energize certain parts of Taft housing. Anything but taking away our rights. Solar panels or anything would have worked! We have no Power

City Scorcher Leads To Record Usage For Con Ed
By: Zack Fink
Con Edison's system is being pushed to the limit, but officials remain confident that it'll stay online as the city heat wave continues. NY1’s Zack Fink filed the following report.
Demand is hitting an all-time high for Con Edison as record temperatures lead to record energy usage.
"The current load, as we see it, on Con Ed's system is about 13, 170 megawatts, which is a record for them, ” said Joseph Bruno of the Office of Emergency Management.
As a result, Con Ed reduced voltage by five percent in neighborhoods all across the City.
Areas in all five boroughs were affected.
People were being asked to conserve power by turning air conditioners down and avoiding using appliances like dish washers and washing machines in the daytime hours.
"To this point I think the system has been performing well, but as expected we've been having some scattered outages throughout the city, and we expect it to continue probably throughout the weekend until we get through this heat wave, " said Carlos Torres of Con Ed.
The city activated its Office of Emergency Management, pulling multiple agencies under one roof to respond to the heat wave.
It also extended hours for public pools and urged people to take advantage of cooling centers.
For those who had the day off, the city's beaches were the destination of choice.
Some even ventured into the water despite some trepidation.
"I'm going into the water, ” said one beachgoer. “I hate New York water, but it's hot. The sand is burning, I'm having fun with my boogie board. I'm having a great day."
“Well I’m a surfer, so I always find a way to get in the water or something like that to stay cool, but this isn’t the hottest. Come August, this’ll be a different story. Everybody’ll be angry about the heat then, ” said another.
Even by the beach along the boardwalk, heat and intense humidity made it difficult to catch a break.
"The humidity is just over the top today, it's hard to breathe, ” said another. “But you know the beach — today is the perfect weather to go to the beach. If you're hot, you jump in the water and that's it."
City officials warn that those looking to beat the heat should not swim in the ocean without lifeguards present.
For tips on how to deal with the heat or to find the nearest cooling center, call 311 or visit nyc.gov/oem.

Ignore the professional trolls comment above. Your absolutely right. I also live in a NYCHA apartment. They cut our power again today. But its not just the elevators anymore, its our apartments now too. It started on the 14th of this month, and happened again on the 21st, and today as well. Currently, we're working with just two rooms that have power, and its not even consistent, shutting on and off at random times. My grandmother needs her oxygen and medical equipment, as well as her air conditioner. So he set up some extension cords to keep them on. Same for the refrigerator. We also have to worry about my newborn nephew. And its not just us. It seems to be at the least a building-wide shutdown. We also have a lot of elderly and small children living here. There definitely needs to be some cutbacks on the power to prevent a blackout, but why some of the poorest residents of the city? And on a Sunday? Its not like we have many options about who to negotiate with either. Who can we call? Everyone just gives lip service. NYCHA maintenance promises to send an electrician within 24 hours, which outright denies the fact that its done on purpose by NYCHA and Con Edison. Con Ed also pretends to know nothing when you call them. This is despite an advisory that was posted by NYCHA on the wall of my lobby that described the power shutdown as temporarily and manually performed for four hours on the 21st-- three days too late. 311 just connects you to Con Ed by the way. So I suppose we just have to suffer while plenty of places that don't need their level of power use 24/7 are unaffected. Unless we get serious about this. But being a lifelong resident of NYCHA makes me doubt that. Unity and civil action are unfortunately not the hallmarks of our neighbors.
overcharged electric bill
I moved into a new apartment in a private house on june 2010 and was pay my electric bill on time every month. On september that very same year i had received and electric bill that stated "amount due none", so i called the company to find out if there was an error on my bill. They told me that because i had overpaid on my last bill the remaining was rolled over to the next month, meaning i had paid two bills in one month. Then from the month of october 2010 i had received the same bill stating "amount due NONE", so i called con edison again. On november 2010 they finally decided to send an inspector to my apartment to see what was the problem and his response was the meter box was removed so they couldn't get a reading. When i asked con edison who would be responsible for removing the meter box for my apartment they said that i had to biscuss that with my LANDLORD who lived on the first floor in the same house, so i did. His response was there was a storm and the wind blew the meter box away, and that con edison was responsible for fixing it which i obviously did not believe. The BIG MYSTERY was were was i getting power if my meter box was removed. Anyway this mess went on until febuary 2011, to make a long story short i have this month alone i had received three electic bills all due in the same month for $800. I strongly believe there is somthing fishy going on and i am going to get to the bottom of it, what should i do?
I agree something strange is going on. I also just got an adjustment made on my bill & they are saying my bill now is $1930.00. Absurd.. I've never heard of such a high bill for someone living in an apt coming home late at night. Its ludicrous
We just received a bill for $700+... something about estimated vs. actual readings for the past 3 months?! Going to get on the phone and try to work this out...
gradual charges
When I first moved to this 3 bedroom apartment was in September 29th, summer was just ended. It's me, my wife and two children that live here. I had only one window AC located in the living room that I was using regularly to cool the whole place. Con Edison came in, read the meter and they initiated my first bill for $ 107. I thought It was phenomenon.
My monthly bills were as follows: October $98.00, November $96.00. Toward the end of November a company named Just Energy showed up to my door and talked me into an energy saving plan. They said that they will supply my electricity at better rate and also make sure that Cons do not charge me more than they should. Great I thought so I signed up. December bill came $129.00, January $ 135.00. Now the one that makes me boasted is this February bill for $182. I do not where this is going but if this is continue, we the people must take some action on a federal level if the State of New York can not help.

con edison customer service
I've dealt with some extremely unhelpful low-level employees in the past. I've worked previously for a federal govt agency, I'm a veteran customer of Verizon, and I've read Catch-22 a bunch of times -- so I know how absurd these interactions can get. But NOTHING comes close to the mix of gross incompetence and outright abuse I've endured at the hands of Con Edison. One of their customer service representatives in particular (who identifies himself only as "Mr. Acevedo") should be fired or perhaps shot.
Also, please never (even implicitly) accuse me of reading The Da Vinci Code, ever again.
@psuguy: It's a joke, ###.

for some reason this posted here ? im not sure how to delete this comment on the wrong issue
it's quite simple actually. call in your own reading if you do not want to wait. you dont even make sense with your complaint. con edison does not charge you a no entry fee if they dont get access one month to read your meter. ?
unfair practices
I lived in a six story building and ConEd has more than 70 meters in the basement. Recently, I sent the payment and they received the payment on Moday, May 10, the same day, they decided to remove the meter. Contacted them, they advised that they received the payment and they will send a tech out to connect the meter. The next day, Tuesday, there was still no light, I contacted them and they advised that the tech came in, but could not get accessed into the basement. There is a leaving super in the building and normally the techs will go into the super's apartment and chatting with him and his kids. I don't really understand this and today is Thursday, I'm still without light in my apartment.

deposit & harassment
I have a business account with coned and I am enrolled in direct payment plan. Payments are never late. Coned every month mails out harassing letters that they are shutting my service off. It has become a quite alarming knowing any day I can come in to work and our electric would be turn off for no reason. I called coned to inquire and tell them to cease...
Read full review of Con Edison and 5 commentsdeposit requirement
I was hurt at work back in July 2009 and as a result fell behind on my rent and bills. My job which initially didn't want to take me back until I filed for Unemployment finally did, but at 2/3rds of what my pay was.
I managed to pay off my Phone, gas (National Grid), and electricity(Con Edison). Six days after I paid the electric bill fully I get a bill for the same amount, plus $112, which from what I can tell is not what I owe but a "deposit requirement". Basically the letter says that my electricity will be cut off if I don't pay it.
Not being homeless is my priority and I'm not going to be able to pay anything until the beginning of February. And that still won't be a $112 deposit.
Can someone advise me on whether or not I have any legal recourse?
Thanks.
