MagicJack review: Doesn't work with dsl as promised 222

This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback.

Magic Jack does not have a customer service rep when you call, they try to force you to order on their hotline. They tell you it works with DSL, sure, it does, but you still need your phone service to use your DSL, therefore, you still have two bills. one for their product and one for your dsl. If you have a cable modem, then you may want to get it, but if you google: Magic Jack complaints, you may want to think twice, because the internet is full of complaints from them. Which is how I found this site. BUYER BEWARE!

There is no customer support to let me know how to return this device. It didnt work and slowed down and damaged my computer. They claim an easy return but unable to return.. Can you help me to get a return address?

I just wanted to tell you guys about my experience with Magic Jack. I've had it for about 2yrs now
and it worked flawlessly with my Cable Internet. I've been using it over a 4G cellular network (Virgin Mobile)
more recently and I've noticed a few things...1) The 4G available bandwidth DOES degrade the quality of the call, unless
it's completely dedicated, meaning, I close out my web browser. and 2) I've noticed that Cellular Networks generally seem
to have a nasty tendency of disconnecting ever so often. So, with that said, I LOVE my MagicJack but would recommend about
2 to 4Mbps of dedicated bandwith across a reliable internet connection to really reap the rewards.

FYI, the MagicJack "tunnels" (VPNs) back to a Cisco Call Manager and Call Manager handles the IP routing so No,
the ISP can't charge you for the long distance calls. The Traffic is encrypted. Don't ask me how I know this, just be happy
that I could contribute.

Have a great day!

Best thing - pick it up from a store near you (I know of two) who will allow returns for 90 days. Do not get it by mail! Try it. If it doesn't work, return it. Case closed!
I am buying it mainly to call overseas where the costs can be prohibitive. It is not practical to think that most people can do without the Internet, anyway. So, that part of your cost will remain constant.

Aye folks, so much scrutiny going on about the MJ plan, it's OK, to put money in your pocket, but one thing very important which I noted, some ISP DSL works are not equal, some do not work with the MJ, and some do. Find out which ones. Also make sure your computer is working good.
What do you expect real magic? Even magic like turning wine into buz has hidden mechanics, yes solid of dimensional transference. How's that?
Good Luck!

Following nearly seven hours on the chat window with seven representatives the Magic Jack still did not operate. The reps basicly tried the same solutions over and over despite indicating they had read the previous reps tried solutions. Iasked the last rep if the chat window text could be forwrded to a supervisor to review the tried solutions and then email me at the address supplied with a possible solution. The rep said she could not promise anything.
I asked if the supervisor could conmtact me via email and she again said she could not promise anything. I should have asked if they could call me from their MagicJack.

I had got this for a gift and we brought it home. I hucked it up to my computer and it worked for three days. I have not been able to get it to work for 4 months now. I have been tring to contact the company to no avail. I am sick to death of being ripped off by stupid companys that you can' even find a phone number for.
I recived a number for the magic jack but, it will not connect to the internet. people who call can't reach me and i can not call out.
Who do you contact for this problem? I have found 100 web sites but, nothing to contact someone to figure out the problem!
I just want help not a bunch of crap that never helps anyone!

I have been using the Magicjack for about 5 months, and it worked ok. Sometimes the connection is garbled or has an echo, but about 75% of the time the sound is good. It has saved me a lot of money in long distance phone calls. I use it as a second line for outgoing long distance calls only.

But, lately I am getting the "broken storage" message, and can't start it. I've been on the chat help with them for hours, and we fix it. Then the next day the problem is there again.

I'm going to try for a replacement...we'll see how it goes.

I just purchased the magicjack and I can't even get it to work. I am sending it back.I got this on the 30 day trial then pay for it. I am disgusted with it and am sending it back before the trial ends so I won't lose any money. They said to just plug it in and do everything to register it and I did and it still won't work. It is a good idea but not worth it if you are getting the run around and can't even get in touch with anyone to help you.

Bad customer service, I have been waiting for resolution with my request for 2 days now. After talking to 6 custoer service reps - nothing.

No phone numbers to escalate a problem. All support are done in chat. Customer Service offer bad service and and theres nobody monitoring them. No checks and balances. They are free to do what they please and even say

"Marykate: If you still insist regarding your issue, I might as well end this chat."

DO NOT buy the product. Its been hell dealing with them.

One hour. that is nothing. this morning and before i WAS a big magic jack fan. Today I spent SIX hours on chat trying to fix an error three problem. You get support and in the past it has been good, so they are still better than HP and so much better than MicroSoft Windows, the worlds more defective product, but still SIX hours. And with each disconnection, they would not pass me back to the previous person so I could continue where we left off. Not a clue these people. I have two Magic Jacks. I have just lost over 6 hours of my life. Zero progress. Neither works. No more. whatever money i saved i just lost. No more. I am throwing my magic jacks in the trash and will use the regular phone service if necessary.

call a consumer attorney and see if you state has a telephone consumer protection act. Ohio does specifically applies to cell phones and they can get penalized $$$ per call plus attorneys fees, etc. under the statute.

I am hoping they are working on a new one to pull cable tv through the phone line if they can pull the phone thing off Hats off to them for saving me a ton of Money!Nothing but satisfied with their services and like I said Get the Magic TV out there guys! Screw these Outrageous amounts of money these big corporations are charging for Cable TV with ### customer service reps who take your $$$$$$ but do not provide great Service! Magic Jack has ripped me off for $81.64 for the PLUS which I sent back the day after I received it in January 2012. They keep stalling and stalling saying "it''s in review". Their call center idiots are liars. There's no "in review". They just think you'll stop botherig them.

I have had Magic Jack for about five years. I've had to replace it about three times due to the USB attachment being very delicate and breaking off. However, for $20 a year, with all it's little quirks, I still rely on it and it does its job (when my computer is not doing something else, like receiving emails). I order the Magic Jack Plus back in January 2012. It cost me $81.64. The day after I received it, I returned it because although it "doesn't need a computer", it DOES NEED A ROUTER. I sent it back through the USPS and I still have the reciept with a USPS number. My credit card has a suspension on the charge, but I don't know how long they will keep that suspension. After constant "chats" on line, I'm still being told it's "in review". There is no way to contact these people except through the chat lines. Someone has to look into this company's underhanded practices. I have been a loyal customer all this time and they still treat me like slime.

What you NEED is "stand-alone-DSL" NO phone service needed..althought the DSL and phone service come over the same line into your home and use the same phone jacks in your walls! I just had mine changed over by ATT.. Cost me $24.95 per month NO tax..Eliminated my monthly phone bill of $50 Month...The Magic Jack Works just fine..the quality is as good as att..I can fax through magic jack and receive fax..too many of you people are Professional Complainers..Hell, I'm 70 years of age and it works fine for me!

I've had the same problem with my MJ. I can't call some numbers within my area code, I just get a busy signal, three times, then it cuts off. I've checked with customer service and they referred it to engineers.

Un instal and follow the instructions and you will have no problems. If you say you already did this and it still does not work, then you are in denial and/or have other computer or network related problems. Make sure that you follow the instructions regarding setting your cmos to "do not hybernate." This is the main instruction that most users do not understand and it will definitly give you the problems that you seem to be having. Like I said uninstall and set up correctly following all instructions. If you do not understand the step then find someone that does, if you skip it you WILL have problems.

Magic jack works intermittantly. You have to pull plug and then re-pludg it in. most times there is no dial tone and it reads "connect to internet, error message 3." I was connected to the net. When it "fires up" it takes the middle of your monitor and can't be moved disabling use of your computer for a couple of minutes or so. My time is valuable as most persons and they should correct this. Tell everybody not to buy it and look for a competitor that is responsible, reliable and trust worthy. if you know of one, write back.

I have four magic jacks and they all work great. I do think they should give you a new one no matter what.
But there is a customer service live chat on the page. I will try and find the link and repost it here later today.

I had issues with an older computer that gave me terrible sound quality, but I put that one on a new computer and it's great. The other issue is the internet connection quality. That can cause troubles too.
I know it's hit or miss with products like that.

But, have you seen Google Voice? Just Google "Google Voice" and it's free too.
That quality is about the same but if they are having problems on their end then you will know it.
I love it and it has great features like you can record incoming calls (woe to the bill collectors that break the law!).

my experince exactly...i thought i was at fault...and was just getting ready to retry installation. i got this thing in april this year. i now realize that not having done this successfully is probably the best thing that could ahve happened to me. i only want my money back and to return the product and not have them charge me for a second year. whewww! what a rip off. by the same token this was recommended to me by friends who have successfully used this for more than a year. they got theirs however from Radio Shack and not from a TV ad.
