Direct TV / very poor service and unacceptable contract

1 United States Review updated:

I have had direct TV now for about three months and have had one problem after another. I had initially switched from cable to DirectTV because I thought that their high definition service would be superior. Big mistake. Since the time of install I have been through 4 high definition receivers, each one failing for a different reason. When your service goes out with DirectTV your only option is to wait for a replacement box or for a service tech which in my case has taken close to a week each time. My service has been so spotty that I have had to retain my cable so that I have a backup. Talk about spending too much for T.V. service. Now that my experience with these buffoons has soured to the point it has i decided that i had had enough. Unfortunately their two year contract insulates them from having to provide any level of acceptable service at all. Even though my experience has been a nightmare and I have spent countless valuable hours trying to resolve issues they will not offer to terminate my contract no matter how many times I have requested this. I am currently without any service again and I have decided that I am going to bite the bullet and pay the termination fee. I am not litigious person but have considered taking these bullies to court. I can't imagine that I am the only person that has had these issues. I would avoid doing business with this company at all cost. I wish good luck to all those that are in the same boat as me.

My Direct TV contract expired. I canceled received a email saying my final bill was $172 which I would be receiving in the mail shortly. The next day I received a email with a shipment confirmation for my return equipment. 2 days later I received the boxes. 2 days after that my checking account was debited $404. When I called they said they would give me the money back WHEN they got their boxes. Their our soo many problems with this. One the money they took out of my account was beyond the final bill days prior. Two the letter with the box said you have 7 days to return it they did not even give me 2 days. Three the email clearly gave a amount due AND even stated customers with equipment due would receive another bill IF equipment was NOT returned. So I call and they tell me I get my money back after they get their boxes back. This totally contradicts everything they had sent me IN WRITING mind you prior. So yeah tomorrow I will be going to my bank to back me up & if they do not I will stop doing business with them. I am going to talk to a lawyer AND am going to tell every person I talk to what they did. To top it off they used my credit card I use for online billing not the one they have on file..and I do not have automatic bill pay. I use one time payment only. They used that after they could not charge it on the one on file. Their customer service person said if I used it on their website they had the right to save the information for future charges at their discretion..I have never ever heard of a legitimate company practicing business like that.

Direct TV - Sign up offers not given
    United States

Direct TV offered me 1 year of satellite services with the Starz Super Pack free for 1 year with the package I selected plus 100.00 cash back over 10 months and a free DVD player. I signed into their internet site to see my first bill and make sure the offers were being met before the 3 days cancellation time had expired. None of the offers were being applied to my bill. I was charged for everything. When I called to ask why Direct customer service acted as if they didn't know what I was talking about that no offers were made to me. Everyone was getting special sign offers during the period I signed up in Dec of 06.

I would not advise anyone to use Direct TV unless all offers are in writing!

I am now waiting for fed ex labels that "supposedly" were mailed out 3 weeks ago. I got 2 bills in the mail soon after starting the service but no return labels as promised. Direct makes people give a credit card number before they will allow you to use their service. I am afraid the next thing will be a charge on my credit card for equipment I have been trying to give back to them.

    Be careful with this company!

We called Direct TV as we could hardly see anything on some of the channels. The customer service rep told us we would need to pay $75 and they would send someone out to check. When I told him that must be a joke he hung up. We sent a letter of termination which they ignored. Then they send their 'claim' to collections. I wasted so much time fighting with these people that I am seriously thinking of suing them for the time I spend on the phone and writing letters. STAY AWAY FROM THEM AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!!!

Everything everyone says is true. We to have dealt with new recievers, poor customer service and everything else. They are the biggest rip off company ever and all they want is your money. I could type a big long story but everyone here has covered every problem I have had with them. If anyone gets a class action law suit going I will be the first to sign up!

Get a lawyer and sue there butts off. Remember to document everything, even copies off all these complaints.
    I'm starting a e-mail boycott.

I have had Direct Tv service for over five years. I had my service moved and upgraded to my new home on Dec,7th.2007. The installation was very messy, they left wires hanging everywhere inside and outside the house, never connected the ground cable outside for electrical safety, and we lost signal every few minutes. I called and complained and Direct TV sent another tech out almost two weeks later. He stated the first tech was fired and he “fixed the service”. Within 15 minutes we began to lose signal again.

I called and e-mail Direct TV about this, offering pictures to prove the service was installed sloppy and didn’t work.
I e-mailed them several times, it’s easier because their call centers have people that can’t speak clear English and are very hard to deal with and understand. Finally I told them to cancel my service because they couldn’t meet there commitment to me and provide a working service. I also asked for a return autho# to send their receiver back to them.

Around a week later Jan 11th.2008 I received a disconnect e-mail and bill for 93.00 .I e-mailed them saying I had no service for that month so how do I owe them.

On Jan 18th.2008 a box with return instructions was delivered to my house for the receiver.

On Jan 22nd. 2008 I saw Direct TV was pulling $562.83 from my checking account. I took of work and went to my bank to stop this from happening, I signed a stop pay but my bank had to investigate it first. I was told to contact Direct TV and ask them to stop the transaction.

I called Direct TV several times, I was told the charges were for an early termination of service. I told them again I never had a working service to begin with. I got nowhere with the call center, the language problem was just to much, I asked for some one that could speak better English and I was repeated the same thing again. Direct TV used a check card I had used before to pay my bill on-line and charged my account without my authorization $562.38.

When I got home that evening I received a bill from them stating what the charges were and it was due immediately.
No one that speaks good English will talk to me from Direct TV, THEY broke the law pulling money from my account without authorization, caused my account to bounce checks, left me unable to buy groceries this week for my family, I’ve lost two hours work as of today trying to clear this up. Tommorrow I have to go to my bank again and to an attorney.

What a nightmare, please pass this on to everyone to warn them about direct tv’s practices

I too have been scammed by directv. I canceled my service because of poor quality with the equipment, and with customer service department. They lied to me and did not honor their end of the contract with me. They lied to me about the rebate, the discount I was to get each month off my bill, installation was from a old beat up pickup-truck and some guy that did not know what he was doing. I was promised a certified directv technician. I was charged for a pole to mount the dish which was never mentioned to me over the phone. I could go on and on about their horrible service. They deducted 421.00 out of my credit card account without my consent, and when I called, I also got the run- around. I spoke with Leann ID# 100242183 in Tenn. trying to get help. I have sent a certified letter to their dispute center at P O Box 6550 Greenwood Village, CO. 80155-6550. I also sent to BBB and FCC. Directv knows they can get away with dishonorable practice , that's why they don't care what you say to them over the phone. I will spread the word to everyone or anyone I know thats thinking of getting directv ... run, run, run. I will keep fighting to get my money back and I wish someone would start a class action suit against them, I also would be the first one to sign up. I also wish our goverment would not allow companies such as directv to continue this kind of practice.

c036Also e-mail if you live outside Atlanta GA or call him if you live in Atlanta GA -his number is on his website I'm thinking of mailing a copy of their letter to attorney general Bill McCollum plus a copy of their bill to him to prove they are lying. Also according to an e-mail I paid an electronic funds payment around January 16. I'd like a company rep to tell me how I made a payment while in the hospital (1/8-1/18/08) and I don't want to hear a bullish story that my landlord and friend took one of my checks and read it to them. Why is it bullish I ran out of Suntrust checks in early December and didn't reorder until late January. If anyone can come up with Direct TV's picture logo send it to me and I'll relabel it and post it to the internet utube: "pissedofftv" Excuse my french but I'm quite angry and irritated when companies like Direct TV tells lies and allegedly commits fraud. Any disatisfied Direct TV customer with billing issues in Volusia County FL contact me by e-mail with your story and mailing address at
[email protected] and my response will explain my strategies for dealing with Direct TV. Again try

we have had direct tv since 3/28/07. I'm telling this site since they DON'T have anywhere to complain on their site! we ordered extra mlb innings last year. It was fine. Then after we got back from europe we noticed on our bill we had it charged again!!! call after call no luck, or help except to take off 5.00 a mth. for three mths. are you kidding. they assumed that we wanted it again, and said they sent us a letter. mabey telephoning would have helped . my god are mail was not seen until we got back home, in which are time to say no had expired.come on now, that would be like a visit to a resturaunt, and returning a year later only to find out they already ordered for you because that is what you had the year before! i think it stinks and i will be canceling as soon as the season is over. I will also tell all the people i care about not to get involved with that rotten company.oh by the way we missed 25 games because we didn't know we had the darn thing. I CAN'T STAND DIRECT T.V.

I decided to go with ATT UVERSE because they could connect my entire house with Networking, so after being with Direct TV for 6 to 7 years I disconnected with them, not thinking anything about it. However... Let me tell you what, I upgraded my Television in my bedroom to a HD so I also upgraded my receiver to a HD receiver, and they extended a contract.. WHAT CONTRACT!! I told them, I upgraded their outdated receiver.. I told them that one would think that being a customer for over 6 years that would null and void a 2 year contract, but NO.. that proceeded to charge me $480 for cancelling early contract, blah.. blah.. One thing on my side was my credit card on their file was expired, I never enrolled in Auto Pay.. I WILL NEVER EVER GO BACK TO DIRECT TV AGAIN.. I never had any complaints about their television, but their customer service just took me and hurled me right into ATT forever and ever and ever.. I will never go back to DIRECT TV for the way they treated me.. ATT UVERSE IS GREAT EVERYONE... TRY IT, IT IS WONDERFUL TO HAVE YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE HOOKED UP TO NETWORKING. installers are super nice and stay as long as it takes to get the job done. Kimn Chartier

When I ordered Direct TV they were having a free HD promo for new customers. On the phone the sales rep explained how the package price didn't come with HD it would be a little extra, but assured me I didn't need HD because there digital quality picture was just as good. So i went ahead and scheduled the install luckily the tech came out during my lunch hour and I was able to meet him and complete the install. 4 hours later when I get home from work I sit down for the first time and turn on my new Digital Satelite TV. The picture quality sucked worse than my old UHF/VHF auto tuner from the 80's. So I promptly give customer service a call to let them know that this is not what I wanted from them as a provider.. SAME DAY not even 4hrs later. There already trying to charge me for a 200.00 HD box and an additional 100.00+ for some other crap they were trying to sell me. So I ask them about there promo for the free HD DVR to new customers. Guess what 4hours into it i'm already an existing customer subject to all there great existing customer charges! 5 hours after they installed the service I was already a previous customer! Way to go puckos! I can't wait to take this nice new dish out to the desert for some skeet shooting!

From the first day of contact with DirectTV I have had problems. They assured me the installation technician could set up internet service and that it was included with my package. The technician was 1 hour late showing up and he laughed at me when I asked about the internet service; said it wasn't even an option! It took me 6 months to get the $100 rebate I was promised after the payment of my fist month's bill. (At this point I had contacted our local news stations and sent a copy of the letter to Direct TV.) I got the check within 2 days!

Our service goes out everytime the wind blows, whether it is storming or not. Do we get a discount for the hours without service? NO. And what about the times when it is storming and the service goes out, do we get a credit or refund on that? No!

Several months later we were out of town and I was billed for 2 PORN movies (no one was in my home). I had to pay for one, they were "KIND" enough to remove one of them and tried to convince me that "someone in my home ordered it (although NO ONE HAD ACCESS TO MY HOME at the time.)

On July 17, 2009 I paid my bill in full. Two weeks later my receiver box stopped working. I called to have it replaced and was told my bill was past due for $16.++ and I would have to pay that before I could PURCHASE A NEW BOX. I said "Wait a minute, you want me to buy a box that I pay rent on every month???!!!" And how is it possible my bill is past due when I paid it in full last week? Then the rep told me he could not tell me why I owed the amount. "I have a charge on my account and you can't tell me what it's for? " No maam, you just have to pay the amount and buy another box. I said, "You just hold on to that thought, I think I"m going to cancel my service. On August 3, 2009 I did cancel my service and was told I now owe them $98.00+ How is this possible that only a couple of days later I owe this money? I got a "FINAL" bill for $38.00 at the end of August. (I was unable to pay it because I lost my job due to becoming disabled.) Now on October 29, 2009 I received a bill for the amount of $201.00 that included 10 Pay Per Views during the summer months (not previously listed on my "Final" bill and I know we didn't order them because I have been home bound since JUNE 09) There is also a charge for 1 football game in the month of September, ONE MONTH AFTER THE SERVICE WAS DISCONTINUED/CANCELLED. I intend to fight this! I will not be bullied to pay for services I did not use! I have contacted my attorney!

If this is just a whining spot, CDEINC, then why is it there are class action suits in 23 states against the s.o.b.'s!!! Fortunately for me, when I called to cancel 4days after dreadfully receiving this crap AS THEIR SUB-CONTRACTED INSTALLER- ILLEGALLY ACTING AS AN AGENT OF DIRECT TV- told me I had seven days, like my contract did say and I did read, and they threatened to pull the $480 from me, too!!! They violate almost every law in Michigan against the MI Consumer Protection Act.
The fun part was when their little phone agent threatened me with this I told her "You just do that!" I went the day before and cancelled my debit card, ordered a new one with a different number. I also let her know I work for my brother who pays me under the table, and get social security-disability, which garnishments can't touch!!! I rent and can't drive because of my disability, so they aren't getting ### from me!!! Ooohhh, aren't they clever?
I also filed a lawsuit against the ###s, or more correctly, WHOLE ###!

over $800 was taken from my account without authorization by dirct tv because I allowed someone to use my card to start their direct tv account. There was no notice given me, and now I must pay bank fees and a myriad of other fees on top of the $800. In the end this will cost me well over $2, 000 dollars to resolve. I dont know how im going to pay my rent, my car payment, or any of my bills at this point all because i tried to do something nice for someone. I truely hope someone files a suit agianst them. I'm looking into it, but with my luck it wont go anywhere so I hope someone here gets the best of them.

Hey CDEINC, I think you need to obtain a little more information about these complaints before you jump to such an ignorant conclusion. With Direct TV...THERE IS NO CONTRACT! We called Direct TV and signed up for one of their promotional packages over the phone. The customer service representative we spoke to NEVER informed us that we would be under a 2 year contract by doing so. Direct TV DOES NOT present you with a contract to read or sign when a technician comes to your house to install your equipment. Direct TV DOES NOT send you a contract to read or sign with your first bill. The only time Direct TV informs you of this is when you try to cancel their services. You want to call people "stupid" who are frustrated with this? People who are smart enough to know they should not be legally bound to a service that they never signed a contract for? I will not call you "stupid." But, I will say that you are ignorant in regards to this subject. Maybe you should do more research on a topic before you arr0gantly disrespect a mass amount of decent people with ligitimate concerns.
