batteries sold but no chargers to charge them!
I have a Yardworks grass trimmer that works on a 24v rechargeable battery. Problem is, the battery is still good but the charger does not. Funny thing is, Canadian Tire sells replacement batteries separately but not replacement chargers. In order to get a new charger I would have to purchase a new trimmer. I wonder if this is sly marketing and cash grabbing? I am very disappointed with Canadian Tire and have been many times in the past - both with the rude service staff and the cost and quality of their products (one small example - a cigarette lighter costs over $10.00 in 2008 - in 2007 it cost under $5.00. I will no longer shop at Canadian Tire.
lousy and sexist customer service
I visited the canadian tire store at centre mall in hamilton asking for assistance with a bathroom plumbing problem. The clerk, scott was arrogant, disrespectful and sexist. His response to me when I couldn't perfectly describe the plumbing problem was: "well all I know is that somewhere in the world there is a pipe with a hole in it that needs to be fixed" this was said with a disdainful and sarcastic tone. When I complained to carol, the store manager she chuckled and said:"oh that is just scott's sense of humour" I found this remark dismissive and condoning of his outrageous behaviour so I then called al cunningham (Who is a long way from richie's nice dad...) al said he was sorry and said he would "interview them" and also told me he has never had any complaints about scott before and he was a long time employee. I interpreted that to mean that I was somehow an isolated complainer whose opinion must surely be erroneous. This whole system strived to make me feel disrepectfed and my concerns irrelevant. I compare canadian tire to the home depot who give courses in home repairs to the outdated 1950's style customer service of this inadequate chain store, canadian tire where my friends, family and I used to shop at. Oh and by the way, mr cunningham didn't even bother to ask my name or contact information so I guess i'll just have to assume that he 'gave a good talking to to scott about the little lady who made a complaint'
I't's no wonder big name american stores like lowes are making it a success in canada
Booooooo canadian tire!
I found the same at the Brantford store. Rude assistant manager, and a Store Manager(Jason Adrian) that refused to come out and see me after repeated requests. Avoid that store at all costs. Lowes here I come!
I personally will not shop at the Canadian Tire located in Brantford. I have been treated poorly on several occassions at that location and experienced the same when talking to management. They rate a zero in customer service.
I have numerous friends who have experienced the same and will never set foot in the store again.
I recently shopped at Brantford's new Lowes and was impressed with the friendly, helpful staff. Clean, organized well stocked merchandise.
Shame on Canadian Tire. Thank you Lowe's for coming to Canada.
very rude customer service
Found the Canadian Tire customer service very very rude.I bought a faucet for my kitchen sink, but it was too big and i decided to return it. since i was working I was not able to return it before 5 days that I pursued it. After common customer service questions, the customer service rep opened the package to make sure everything is in package. Then she took the faucet out of package and banged it so hard on the table. By doing this few water drops came out, she got so mad and accused me of not being honest. She was going on and on about it that how home i am not telling the truth! I explained it politely and tried not to interfere with what she was doing. She kept checking the manual and readind it for few minutes. I was standing and waiting for my money to be returned with my receipt in my hand. After a few minutes she started again, by telling me that she has to check it again since company might not take it back and... so on. I said, i never seen such a customer service, people returning the broken stuff! She said, it's because u used it! And she called somebody else to come and finish the return (she just could not handle it with nooo reason) a gentleman came, and I asked for manager. He claimed to be a manager, however, he did not have any name tag or title! I explained the situation. He said that he will talk to lady(still no apology yet). At this time phone rang, the gentleman went to picked up the phone (while there was another lady in customer service who could have done it). He gave me my money back while still on the phone and I left. That's how you will be treated in Canadian Tire in the following address:

You don't believe me go and see!
You can't expect to be able to return something you've already used. Would you want to by things that other customers have bought and used? Since you're paying full price... probably not. Canadian tire won't let you return things that they can't sell when you are the one who damaged the item. If they did, they would go out of business, since so many stupid people try to scam the sales reps, who by the way are making minimum wage, and can't really be expected to care if you made a mistake, and want you're money back.
I agree, if you return something it helps to be completely honest. If they catch you in a lie they won't know what to believe and everything you say become suspicious. You have no idea how many people try and scam the custome rservice representatives on a daily basis. No one likes helping liers.
Well it says original condition on the back of your receipt and this is not as you used it so that is why you shouldnt have gotten your money, as for the weird behavior she was probably having a bad day.
terrible service
In 2007 I purchased a car battery, I discovered that the battery does not hold a charge, I went back to Canadian tire Kanata Location, to inform them with my issue with the warranty and receipt papers, they tested the battery for 2 hours, and the test results that this battery is defective. At this time I was walking around the store and shopping from the kanata location. At that time I had moved into new house, and I was buying a lot of things, for the house to renovate etc... plus a GPS system $350 plus tools for the car that I never used yet etc... I used to spend over $300 average a week at Canadian tire location for over 4 months.
On the same day I spoke to customer service, at the auto-parts department. The manager claimed that he can not exchange it for me and he does not have another replacement battery, because another client was there on the morning of the same day and they searched for the same battery and they could not find it.
I stayed there for over that hour just calling for my rights to exchange the battery and reminding the staff of the Canadian tire policy for exchange and replace a defective battery. They refused to help me, because they do not have another batter in stock, I was told go to another location "Bells corners" they might have one or the "barhaven" location. I refused to believe that they do not have another replacement battery, for a brand of batteries that only Canadian tire have access to or owned by Canadian tire stores.
I went by my self the shelf of batteries, I searched carefully and then I found the same brand and model of the battery that I have. I called the manager and I pointed out the battery, and then I requested again to exchange the battery for me. Finally they did honor the Canadian tire policy, and they accepted my request to exchange the battery. The total amount of time and frustrations was over than 4 hours, from the minute I walked in with a defective car battery to the time they exchanged my battery. I continue to be loyal customer to Canadian tire, kanata location.
Later on I discovered that the second new battery was also defective and does not hold a charge. I went back again. At this time, as a repeated client for the same problem, I already know where the battery testing machine is and where how to connect it and test it. I went strait to the location where they test the car battery and I called on a staff member. A young employee with full of energy, hooked up the battery to be tested, and told be the that to come back in 2 hours.
I came back to find out, what I already know that this second battery is also defective and does not hold a charge either. A yellow sticker note was attached to the battery indicating that battery defective. I carried this to another near by desk to exchange it, but the have over 15 batteries is stock. I spoke to a manager at the car part service area. they requested my receipt. I looked for my receipt, I did not find it at that time. I went home, searched, and searched, I couldn't find it.
The battery receipt just disappeared. I went back to Canadian tire, kanata location, I spoke a manager there, he said sorry my friend I need you receipt other wise I can not do any thing for you. I continued talking to the manager. He offered me $10 for the battery and I will have to buy another battery. I did not take the offer.
He offered me something else, he said:" give me your battery, but take the top sticker from it, and keep it somewhere safe, and whenever you find your car battery's receipt you will come back and we will deal with it, because you really do not need the battery to clam your refund you need the top sticker number with the receipt that matches the same number of the sticker and I will deal with it." he added : "At the mean time I will you have to buy another battery and pay."
I did not feel that it is right to pay for another battery where the defective battery still under warranty. I told the manager please look into your records, search your database under my phone number, and you will see that truly I purchased the battery from your store from this cashier just two months ago.
The manager searched the database and truly under my name there is a receipt indicating that at the car service department, I have purchased a battery with all dates and number to validate my clam. With original receipt in the database, and the battery number is there, they refused to serve me and exchange the battery for me. We ended up the conversation at the point of, I buy and pay fully for another battery and they will refund me when ever I find my receipt. I agree and I took the offer.
After two defective batteries in a row, and some other client on the same day returning a battery, so I lost trust of buying batteries from the same Canadian tire kanata location, because I did not have good experience using their batteries at that period of time and this specific location. Do not you? I went a cross the street to a Wal-Mart store and I purchased 3rd batter in just few months. the Wal-Mart batter still doing very very good and I have no problem with it.
After few months, the Canadian tire battery is sitting in my garage. I decided to do something about it, either I recycle it or I look for the receipt before I do so. I searched the house extensively, for two days. I found the receipt. Great. I went back to the Canadian tire location in Kanata. I called for the store manager and a tall manager with name ADAM came, I spoke to him, he investigated the receipt carefully, he verified the numbers, and he found that I am in title for another battery, I told him that I have bought another battery from Wal-Mart, and exchanging it does not do me any good.
He said:"bring me the Wal-Mart receipt and I will give you full refund."
I said: "Are you sure?"
Adam Said: "YES! I need a receipt to photocopy it and to show them a proof of purchase." He pointed his finger up, and he looked up while he is saying this to me. I understood that he wants a proof to show his superiors that he is doing his job properly. I agreed, I left very happy, on Monday June 2nd of 2008, at 6:30PM. I came back on the June the 3rd, the next day and I asked for Adam, the store manager. Some one else with name ALLAN, shorter than the manager that I met on Monday, I said: "Sir, I was here yesterday, it is a really long story, I want to cut it short, If you can call the other manager Adam for me please?"
He said ok, he called ADAM, on the phone and ALLAN, started harassing loudly ADAM on the Phone, saying loudly: "I told you that you can not do this."
ALLAN added : "NO! NO!"
and then ALLAN said to ADAM on the phone :"I AM YOUR MANAGER, YOU DO WHAT I TELL YOU TO DO!"
and then ALLAN added: "YOU CAN NOT DO THIS!"
ALLAN hanged up the phone and ALLAN turned up to me saying:"So, this is the mysterious Battery receipt that all the sudden surfaced up?"
I said :"Well, I had to search the house for two days, because I needed this issue behind my back."
Allan said: "I am the Store Supper Manager and MY decision will over rider Adam's decision and this battery will be refunded, it will be exchanged."
I said: "well sir, by doing so this battery does not do me any good. because I have no use for it, Would you please honour Adam's verbal agreement yesterday, and refund it to me, I do not care if the money was Canadian tire money, I would like to spend the same amount of money in your store. but not on battery."
He said that : "there is no difference between the Canadian tire money and real money!"
Yhen I said but what Adam had told me yesterday is different and it means that it is do-able that you can refund batteries.
He said:"Yes, it could be done, that is a special treatment, but you do not look like special."
Then he added asking me: "Do you want to be treated special?"
I said :"Yes! I am a good client to Canadian tire".
Then I listed few expensive items I purchased of the kanata location, including $350 +tax GPS system and $100 tools, and list went on and on etc... I told him you see some service was done on my cars. He searched the database and he said : "Yes, I see your name, $100 on this car, $150 on another car ..." He started shaking his head and adding in very sarcastic way:"NO, NO, HA HA HA !" and then:"What is this $100 here and $150 there not good. not good at all, NO! NO, HA HA HA!"
I finally decided to take the new battery but continue to call for ADAM's decision and the Previous manager decision which is when ever I find my receipts I will receive full refund.
Thank you,
M.F.
You will find the person you spoke to is the owners son and is under strict orders from his father to give out as little as possible, not withstanding the fact he is in a position that NO ONE else will take, unfortunatly for the good people working at that store the owner and his son are nothing but money hungry and couldnt give a damn about customer care..as you found out
dishonest and rude
The following letter contains events that happened at the Canadian Tire south, located at 2510-50 ave. Red Deer, Alberta.
On April 26, 2008, I brought my PT Cruiser in to this location to take advantage of the “deal” at Canadian Tire where I purchase tires and receive a free wheel alignment. I received the tires. Terry Hogan put them on and also made the deal with me. First, I was lead to believe these tires were priced at 89.00 each- I paid 97.86 each. I also paid for the labor and other things until the bill came to 518.97. I didn’t expect that but I paid it. I was then told that I would have to bring my car back for the wheel alignment. Three days later I’m still trying to get it into the shop (after traveling 2 different days into Red Deer from Bentley, hoping they would fit me in somewhere). I tell “ Dan”(the name he gave me- @ 22 years old, very rude) that I put a lot of miles on my vehicle and would like the “free” wheel alignment done. He finally told me to bring it in at 3 pm. I did so and met “Dan”. He told me my alignment would take 2 hours (Terry told me ½ hour). I told “Dan” that “my” mechanic said it would take only ½ hour. “Dan” was not friendly. Fine- I needed my car done. He told me to pick it up at 5pm. I left him my cell # so “Dan” could reach me if there was any problems, etc. At 4:52 pm. He calls me and says that the Tie rods and the bushings need replacing (843.53$). I was just steps from the door of the store and went in and asked “Dan” how he figured that. “Dan” got feisty again. I ended up leaving without a wheel alignment, very embarrassed because of his tone (a couple of children were standing there) and he also told me I couldn’t have a wheel alignment until I got this work done. My car had just come from the shop and my mechanic told me that all I needed was new tires and an alignment. I had shopped around and found that Canadian Tire seemed to have the best deal and also I thought they would treat me well (there seems to be a problem when a woman goes to certain mechanics). I brought my car to my mechanic, again, he put it up on the hoist, again and said there’s nothing wrong- again. After missing days of work (because my vehicle is my job), no wheel alignment and spending way more money than I could afford---I am now writing to you. I usually don’t complain and I don’t know if you can do anything about this but I thought it was something you would want to know. My husband nor I will not shop there again.
Thank you for your time.
CANADIAN TIRE SOUTH, RED DEER
EXTREMLY RUDE FEMAILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT PARTS DEPARTMENT
Hi,
On May 05, 2014 at approximately 6 pm I came into the Canadian Tire south located at 2510-50 Ave. Red Deer, Alberta.to get my battery tested for the first time. I pulled up to the garage door and the guy opened the door and i drove my car into the bay and i told the gentleman to leave the car running incase my car did not start again, and he said okay as i made my way into the parts department to pickup a new battery for my car. There was a lady there in the customer service department and i explained to her that i needed a new battery and she took my name and the type of car and what kind of battery i needed etc.. Then i told her the car was inside the Bay and right then she freaked out on me and said why I drove in without checking in first, and i told her im sorry i just pulled up and the guy opened the gate and i pulled in, I was not awaire that was not allowed, She did not take that into consideration, She was not professional she was screaming at the top of her lungs for this mistake i had made even after apologising she did not calm down. Then she went to the shop and told the guy to get my car out of the shop and not to work on it and as i was making my way to my vehicle to sit on the drivers seat i heard her swearing at me, litterly saying the f word 3 times and i said she will not work on my car not even if i drive it outside the shop, They young guy said he will take a look at it outside and the lady from the front desk threatened him that if he touched my car she was going to tell Dan to get him fired and the guy said sorry buddy i cant risk that, Then i told the lady to give it to me in writing that she will refuse to not work on my car at all and thats when she started swearing at me and saying the F word and i said how dare you swear at me and she called the manager which was a young female also. she just told me to leave with the car and to come to the front to buy my battery. I came to the front purchased a battery and the guy said that they will not be able to replace my battery for me because they dont have time. I felt that he was lying to me hands down. Then i asked the lady that was swearing at me for her name and told her i was going to complain about her and she refused to tell me her name and threatened me that she has all my information with her, im not sure what that meant but i just was so mad that i left. I felt humilated and disrespected with the worst service my friend told me to just record her next time and put it on youtube which is a good idea.Im not sure how she can get away with treaing loyal customers like dirt and swearing at them and bossing them around. This is the first time i have ever made a complaint in my life i feel that she should never be allowed to serve a customer. I certainly would not wish that feeling on anyone what she had made me feel like. The whole staff need training in dealing with customers.
I own a '96 Yukon with 260kkms...all origional equip, Had a situation where the vehicle would not start..Cdn Tire replaced the rotor and dist. cap..I drove 375 kms and the thing quit.. the replaced them again. I have to travel up north into the bush...shoild I be concerned about the quality of Cdn. Tire parts?
Nothing to do with this article what so ever but thought I'd share two stories of people that are full of crap.
1)So I'm working at a Canadian tire in Alberta in the auto parts department and to be honest i like the job for what it is as management here is excellent. So im helping a customer with brake parts when another guy just butts in and asks where are the spotlights and which would work best for him. So I tell him he has to wait his turn as it is not fair for the customer I am helping. Anyway he walks away and a few seconds later butts in again and said something like Well for gosh sake you could at least give me an aisle number so fair enough it takes two seconds to say a number as rude as he was being. So off he goes, low and behold he comes back and actually waits in lines for me to finish. I ask him if there is anything more that I can do for him and he says that the spotlights are not down aisle eight like I told him. So I walk over there to show him and point out the entire left side of the aisle is spotlights, and he has the nerve to say "Well these were not here before, I cant believe you would prank me like this". Anyway end of conversation I walk away.
2)Someone comes to me wanting to special order something, awesome we do that all the time and it is a painless process. So I ask him what he wants and he says he wants a full chevy 350 engine, I look at him as no canadian tire orders engine for over the counter use, hell I dont think any even order engines period. I unfourtanetly have to tell him no, he gets irrate and starts to explain that a "Canadian" Tire in the USA told him that any store could do it no problem. I am stunned as there are no canadian tires in the USA obviously, he later specifies it was in Montana. Anyway after telling him no repeatedly (If we had a supplier and he prepaid it would have been no problem, but there is no crate engines shops in the county) he walk away saying of course they dont honour what they say at another tore that would make sense.
Both of these people made me laugh as there actions are so stupid.
play center
We bought a Bayside Play center at Canadian Tire. He had to wait at the store for over half an hour before anyone could locate this product. When the stock boy brought out the product my husband told him it did not look like the right one. The stock boy assured him that it was the right one and he had double checked the item numbers.
My husband proceeded to pay $1, 199 for the product and drove it home.
As we looked at the boxes, we discovered that we were given boxes from two different play centers that did not match, and neither one was the play center we had requested. My husband was very upset because in the store he had insisted it was the wrong play center and the staff brushed him off.
The store would not offer us any solution except to return the product on our time and money. We live over 100 kilometers away and had to borrow a friends truck, so to return it we had to borrow vehicle, spend money on gas, and waste our whole day. And they would not even give us a discount or store credit. They were so rude to us about it, and we will never shop there again.
after changing the oil mechanic forgot to tight the engine oil drain bolt
I recently went to Canadian tire Keel/St. Clair or my Honda Accord 2000, for Oil Change. Job was done and i was called that my Car is ready. This work was done on May 22, 2008 @ 14:29hrs, My invoice no 394619. On May 23, 2008 I noticed that my car is leaking oil, I was surprised that how come suddenly my car is leaking oil so much. It used to be clean and...

I took my 2004 civic in to get them to replace the wheel stud a $2.97 part and was quoted 1/2 hour which should come to about $50.00 when i returned to canadian tire an hour later they said it took 2 hours and charged me $200.00. I phoned the manager and he said them are the rates and there is nothing he could do about it and then hung up. I phone about 15 other shops and most of them said $30.00 max highest was $50.00.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I hope everyone stops going to canadian tire.
Yup, Crappy Tire really does suck for auto service. I took my car in there about a year ago for an oil change and plugs. $25 for the plugs, $30 for the oil change...and over $250 in labour/shop fees. The idiot doing the oil change actually forgot to put the plug back in the oil pan before pouring in the new oil, so they double charged me for oil, *and* charged me labour on said ### cleaning up the mess he'd made. Went straight to the manager after getting this ridiculous bill, and he flat out told me "Too bad. If you have a problem, don't come back." Needless to say, I haven't.
Canadian Tire has the WORST service I've ever seen. Everytime I go there I walk out 5x more pissed off then when I walked in. The car parts department is a JOKE in every way I can think of. Between the looooooooong waits in line, the very slooooooooooooooow inept people working the counter, its almost like the staff hates there job, are they getting min. wage or something? Seriously, AVOID CANADIAN TIRE AT ALL COSTS!
replacement key!
After purchasing a Yardworks lawn tractor I was unable to have a spare ignition key cut for the product. The tractor was bought at this location yet they were unable to cut me a spare key or tell me how to obtain one.
Canadian Tire does not carry every key in the world. I doubt they had that type of key, if they did I'm sure they would have cut it for you. Think about how many keys they would have to stock in their store just hoping someone buys a rare one eventually so they won't loose their money.
Lied about dead car battery
I made the mistake of purchasing a car battery from Canadian Tire, foolishly believing that they would honour their 3-year replacement warranty. After 18 months the battery would not hold its charge, so I took it into the store to get my free replacement. The fellow at the counter looked at me and condescendingly told me that it was empty and needed to be...

Just a reminder to everyone... Please try to be civil and respect the employees in customer service at canadian tire, or for that matter, anywhere. They always have some way to help you, it all depends on your attitude and how you speak to them. The managers will back up whatever the employees say about the issue. If you're rude to them, don't expect them to take it and not be rude back. It's human nature. And just because an item broke, or you didn't like it, don't blame it on the employee. Chances are pretty good that he/she did not make it, and is not responsible for you breaking it, or it being defective. He/she did not make the "rules of return" and is just told to follow them. Most people working in those stores are just working there as a part time job, trying to get through school with a little money to pay for schooling fees or have a little extra cash in there pocket. They do not care if you morally disagree with there policies or think it's their fault. If you disagree with something then politely say you don't agree and chances are they'll say they're sorry, they don't make the rules and they have to follow them. If you're still just so upset at the injustice of a couple cents, that weren't yours to begin with, or you think you should get something brand new for free if you bring in your disgusting, overused product, then contact the head of canadian tire. And leave the employee out of it. If the employee was rude to you, then please before you get all huffy and demand to speak with a manager look at your own attitude and how you're treating them. Besides, the manager and employee will probably laugh at you when you leave anyways!
I hope this post has helped some people with basic common courtesy when dealing with employees who have a choice to the extent they decide to help a customer! Have a great day everyone!
Wow. I did not know posting a simple message would make some people get so upset. I did not mean to offend anyone I was simply just stating that age old saying "treat others they way you would like to be treated." Milan, I'm sorry you think the world is against you and every employee is the same and a certian store. Kim I'm sorry you think all Canadian Tire employees are "incompetent teenagers" and you feel the need to belittle me.
Nevertheless, think about your post logically. If you owned a large business would your aim be to make money? I would think so. Therefore, would you rather hire a teenager and pay them minimum wage or hire a more skilled ADULT (for the sake of argument) and pay them a much much more higher wage. Obviously you would hire the young one and train them to the best of your ability in order to have the business (and yourself) making much more money. But with your attitude, I'm sure no one really missed you at your Canadian Tire anyways. If you give people a chance, yo'ure realize that they're not all the same. Just because they work at an establishment does mean they all think alike.
Thank you Bill. I agree that by her post, she is bitter towards everyone who tries to help her. I feel deeply sorry for those around her because she probably makes their days just go downhill when she shows up. I belive, that by her post, she thinks the world must bow down to her when she's ready for them to do so and if you make her wait- WATCH OUT! Out come the claws and the imprints are left on the COMPUTER BLOG about Canadian Tire. Ha.
**Before you tell everyone you recieve such horrible customer service, look at how you're treating the employee. If you go in there with some unreasonable return, then you shoudl be turned away. If you think you're better than the CSR's and you deserve the universe handed to you on a silver platter just becuase you showed up or you want it, then you are in for a rude awakening one day. I just wish I would be there to see it. Try to treat others with respect and you will recieve respect in return. It's not a hard concept to learn (unless you're too proud), you should have been hearing it since you were a child**
"ADDITIONALLY, " no where on here have I posted my age. I am an adult, working a full time job at a small business. So I don't know where you invented that I am a "little girl." Shows your sterotypical thinking though. Nice.
***If you don't treat people with respect, you shouldn't expect any respect back***
Well, isn't someone just having a rotten day? My post was just meant to be polite and state that people who want something done for them should be polite to the people who are in the postition of power to help them. If you think you were being talked to rudely or sarcastically, would you not speak back in a rude or sarcastic voice? If you are being kicked, would you not kick back. It's human nature.
Most of the employees you deal with in retail stores do not give a cr*p about the return system, they are just told what to do and they do it. They can't change the system, so shut your mouth and stop yelling at them- it's not they're fault so they might get defensive if you think it is and start yelling at them. Go to the owner of the store and talk to them, or the head of the coorportation.
I have seen it time and time again, not just at Canadian Tire, where an employee was going to help a person, but they were spoken to rudely or made it seem like they were stupid, so the employee did not help them. If you are polite and treat others the way you would like to be treated, you will not have a problem. Didn't you learn the saying "Treat others they way you would like to be treated" when you were just a toddler? It's really that simple.
All I meant was treat people with respect everywhere you go. If you don't you should expect any respect back.
Now this is the first legitiment compalint i have seen on this website. They should have checked the time on you bill and taken pity on you just trying to make a simple exchange for a bike you bought which you would like to work. I would have taken pity on you.
WOW! you certainly have a lot of anger! To call a cashier OBESE while she was just trying to do her job. I feel sorry for you. You must be really unhappy with yourself and/or your own body to say that.
Have a nice day! I hope things work out better for you and your life!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
There are two Canadian Tire locations in Peterborough: Chemong and Lansdowne. Today I bought a bike from the Lansdowne location. It was a little pricey, nearly $300. When I got home I noticed that the gears didn't shift properly. Little disappointing but no big deal.
I brought it back to the Lansdowne location but they didn't have any more assembled and no one was in to assemble a new one. They did however call the Chemong location who told them that I could go there and exchange the bike no problem since they had several assembled. Cool.
So I loaded up the bike, drove across town, unloaded it and went to the returns desk at the Chemong location store expecting to exchange it no problem. Was I ever wrong. First off the customer service clerks whispered between themselves when they saw me walk up with the bike. To me it seemed as if they were getting ready for it. They then said that they would not exchange the bike and that they did not receive a call from the Lansdowne location.
Now I know for a fact that they had received a call as I was standing at the customer service desk when the clerk from the Lansdowne location called the Chemong location. They would not help me, provide any assistance or even call the Lansdowne location to see what the confusion was about. The manager then came out and basically said I was lying and that he would not exchange or provide a refund for the bike even though I had my receipt that was dated only hours earlier.
With absolutely no help being offered at the Chemong location I had to reload the bike, drive back across town, unload the bike and bring it back into the Lansdowne location store. Now I am waiting for a new one to be assembled, hopefully tomorrow it'll be ready.
At the Lansdowne location I received great service and was quite helpful. The Chemong location on the other hand was horrible, I have never been treated so rudely or given so little help in my life. The manager at the Chemong location was incredibly insulting and in my opinion completely unable to run a store if he's going to treat paying customers like that. In short I will from now on only shop at the Lansdowne location and will strongly encourage everyone I know to do the same.
So, today I venture back to what is my local, and, in my opinion, Canada's worst Crappy Tire store on Gibb Street in Oshawa. My needs are simple - I've lost the extension tube for the spray can of silicone lube I use on my treadmill, and, since they don't sell the tubes, am prepared to buy another can of lube. As well, I hope to buy a nice shiny chrome or stainless (Chinese chrome?) tailpipe extension for my new car. What do I find?... all the "shiny accessories" are now behind padlocked wire grills! This means you have to go in search of an "associate" (I think that's what they call them nowadays) to unlock the wire cage, and escort you, like a convict, to the cash with this $10.99 made in china piece of crap that they, for whatever reason, think has the same appeal to a shoplifter as the Hope diamond to a cat burglar. It's very difficult to pin down one of these "associates" - they gather in groups, like antelope at a watering hole, to gossip, but, should they catch you approaching with that "help me" look, or trying to make eye contact, they scatter like cockroaches when you switch on the lights. So, I forget about the chrome exhaust tip, since I can go to Walmart, or Princess auto, and actually fondle similar merchandise without the key wielding gestapo standing impatiently over my shoulder.
I go to the "express" cash with my can of silicone lube. There is a woman trying to exchange a pair of sunglasses. Trouble is, the old ones have no tag or bar code. The obese cashier is busily phoning departments to find out what to do - why doesn't she just send the sunglasses queen to customer service? I stand there for what seems like eternity, and then notice that the next guy in line in front of me has a fistful of documents. I put my can of lube on the counter, think to myself, "Hello Walmart!" and leave.
I have worked as a CSM in the Ft.Garry location and some of the managers will NOT back you up. All they care about is the store score going down if a customer calls the head office and complains. I have been yelled at, got the middle finger right in my face in front of the store manager and he gave the customer what ever she wanted. I did my job well and 90% of the customers loved me. Keep in mind that this CT is in a neighbour hood that like to think they are rich and need to be served on a silver platter. Ct is a good company to work for, but it all depends who you work for since they are all individually owned. All the senior management wants is deep pockets to put money in them. If we worked our butts off and got a good store report then more money for them and we get nothing. The senior management have favorites and no people skills. Since I have left there, I have never shopped there again. Always at the Southdale location. Ft.Garry never had the proper merchandise in the flyers and they were always out of stock. I was there for many years and watched the company fall over the last few years and it is sad to see people get treated like garbage especialy the good employees that put their neck out for even the rude customers. Some days, customers woulld just walk in looking for a fight because they had a bad day. I would kill them with kindness and when that didn't work, a store manager would be called up and they would give them anything they wanted. Whay were there policies and rules that the employees would obey by and the management would just overide you and make you look like an ###. I will never step foot in the CT in ft.garry ever again.
I agree with what you are saying. I actually have worked at the automotive service desk at Canadian Tire for about 3 years. In response to your last remark, it's true, they would rather hire a cheaper teen and train them rather then pay for someone more skilled. Those who are more skilled usually flock to a better place with a better reputation. And yes, when I was hired at 14 I knew not a thing about cars. But I appreciate the opportunity they gave me, as I have learned TONS! I am proud to say that my position is an "automotive service advisor" and even more proud to have the knolledge to back up that statement. While most 17 year old girls are working at grocery stores or cafe's, it is nice to know that I am getting an education, and hopefully it will help me in my post secondary advances. I do try to keep my additude and ignorance to a minimum while working with grumpy customers. Sometimes its not worth it to cause such a fuss, I just do my job to my best ability, hope that they leave a little happier, and move on to the next person in line. It's hard to work with the public, but I will say that there are some people who definatley need a lesson in customer service, but they are not found JUST a big corporations like CT and Walmart. I guess its just the person you get served by. But it does make m job and life a lot easier when I greet with a smile and get one back! So Ashley, good point!

'Cheated Customer' how original. You have a problem that can't be fixed within the store, call head office. That's what they're there for.
Ashley, I agree completely with you. Thank you for your insightful post.
This is a case of “BUYER BEWARE” at Canadian Tire (Calgary Store #419, 64th Ave & Deerfoot Trail N.E, Calgary, Alberta).
Here’s my little story:
Bought a cordless mower one year ago, the battery dead just few days before the warranty expires, I think I was lucky.
Then the trouble starts, first I took the battery to the return desk, two ladies ask me to bring the whole mower so that they can replace a new one for me. (sounds too good to be true for Canadian tire.), I believed them.
the whole stupidly heavy mower was taken to their store today, the new face behind the return desk asks me why bother to take the whole machine here? she was trying to kick me back to the factories, I explained to her, but then she told me there was no battery and this type of machines in the stock right now, and I have to take the mower to the other store to try.
I'm getting confused and feel like a fool, this yardwork mower is used only 4-5 times, and where am I suppose to take it now? so I asked her to call the manager who's named James, that so called manager has the worst attitude I've seen in Canada, first he told me I must have void the warranty by store the battery outdoor, I swear in Jesus name that I keep the battery in my basement all the time cause my charging station was there. and I'm that type of guy who always read the users manual. When I'm trying to speak something, he start yelling..." do you want me to help you or not?, will you let me finish?" I realized that I have no more things can talk with this guy. Then I ask him who's the higher manager, he points back to himself and told me he's the one...Great way to go! Canadian tire!
in the end, he told me he knows some magic, and he can get one new battery for me if I want, (now you want me to believe a new battery is in stock now?), I asked him is there any warranty for that "new battery", he says no! I might be stupid once, but not twice in two days!.
anyway, I will never buy anything from that 64 ave store, Just a simple battery swap within warranty has already made me looks like a scam customer. Bye Canadian Scam Tire!
Customer service will lie and manager will cheat you. If you try to complain to Canadian Tires customer complain department on their poor website - they will try to cheat you as well instead of help you.
They just making money anyhow.
Montreal. Canada.
Cheated customer
As someone who has worked for Canadian Tire Corporation, I can add this bit of insight:
Most (but not all) of the Canadian Tire Employees at the store in which I worked, were between 17 - 23 years of age, and most of them were still going to school. The vast majority of them were both very polite and diligent in their work. But obviously there will always be some bad apples within a big barrel.
The problem in the CTC store where I worked was not with those aforementioned younger employees, but rather in management, both on and off the visible floor. Just as a case in point, I had been hired to work on cash - with no experience in either retail or on a cash system like CTC was using.
Bottom line was that the supervisor-manager who hired me (in my second interview), passed off responsibility of my training to one of the aforenoted younger part-time workers. I received what amounted to maybe 5-10 minutes of training, in a very complex financial system ... and was thereafter left to fend for myself, for all intents and purposes.
Pretty careless thing to do considering how many thousands of dollars can roll through (credit card; debit card; cash; cheques and gift certificates), in just a few hours.
While everyone here has a valid point, the fact remains that in CRM (customer relations management) it is on the onus of the company (represented by the front line customer service staff) to initiate a polite and positive interaction, regardless of the mood or disposition of the customer. It has been my experience in customer care that though a customer may begin an interaction with a rep in an "irrate" state, it is in the rep's power to turn the mood around so that the customer leaves the store satisfied. This however can only be done if the rep employs the needed charm, unthreatening body lanquage, and humble self confidence required (nothing escalates a customer's ire faster than an arrogant, smug, defensive response). Not every rep has these "soft skills" and thus is not really suited for the job. One of the secrets a rep must learn is not to take the customers "guff" (for lack of a more expedient term) personally. They are mad at THE STORE (unless your personal incompetence was responsible for the customer's related irritability to begin with) not YOU personally. Another thing I have always found valuable is to acknowledge the store's alleged error (even if the customer is totally "off base", acknowleging it is the first step to diffusing the initial anger). People will listen to other people who believe that the person with whom they are speaking is "on their side". I can not emphasise this point enough! Once they sense your "genuine" support (and it must be genuine because customers are not the fools many businesses would have you believe they are) then you have total clearance to resolve the problem calmly and satisfactorily. Remember that there is absolutely nothing wrong with saying to a customer "Oh my goodness, I'm so very sorry to hear that. That shouldn't have happened and I'll work to fix it right away!" Another valuable thing is to offer a discount or some kind of "freebie" (I know this isn't always possible in some companies but that is another topic --the lack of customer relations skills of the company as a whole). Nothing brings back a customer (and provides that all-valuable word of mouth) like a complimentary item or discount! One thing reps should remember, that is completely in their control is that many customers will specifically want to deal with you and only you if you have made them feel like "gold" (this is especially valuable if you're on a commission-basis pay of some kind or other). Reps don't realize that they can be as much of a customer draw to a store as any sale item. Conversely, a bad and percieved "nasty" rep (and it's all about perception, remember) will develop a reputation which will follow them where ever they go in their community, even to other jobs, and prevent people from entering the store as long as you are there. You think it doesn't happen? How many times have I heard friends tell me "see that guy, that's that a__hole who gave me the hard time at Canadian Tire". Anyway, these are things which your store (CTC specifically here) should be teaching reps. It is NOT the onus of the customer to create the proper retail mood or to "give respect". As my father used to say "repect has to be earned" and you'd be surprised what little it takes to earn that respect --that is the job of the service rep and the store. The customer may not always BE right, but it is your job to make them FEEL right.
Kim you outright are absoloutely stupid. There now that its off my chest. Did she state anywhere in the article her respective age?. No I do not believe so. Just to let you know adults can be just as competent as todays youth if not more incompetent. IF YOU DO NOT GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND REALIZE THAT THE YOUTH IS THE FUTURE THERE IS NO HOPE FOR YOU. As well judging by the wording composition and setup of your article it seems that you are very bitter towards anyone that tries to help you. For your information miss not everybody gets bitter as they get older as you have seem to. Milan it sucks to be ripped off by anyone and it is human nature not to trust again after being hurt but not every store is the same nor the employees.
Kim you must have an IQ of 35, maybe more as you spelled most words right. But you decided to lump an age group together, all 50, 000 of a companies employees together, and above all made assumptions about age. You are simply idiotic and when you get old and need help hope that the stupid incompetent youth that don't give a damn wont help you out. Seriously. I could go on and on about different things and why you are doing what you are doing but I choose to use my IQ points in other places.
You were young once to, you can try to hide this and you will as you seemed to not have a great experience growing up.
Your neighborhood genius,
Bill

I had the worst experience with these bad people (Canadian tire) , I took my car to them two days ago because it was not starting till after several times so I drove it to them (thought they are a big company with good reputation) and I asked them to fix the problem, few hrs later they called me to tell me that the car need a new battery and alternator and that will coast me almost $500 cad, and I asked them if they are sure that it was the problem they told me yes, so I paid the money and picked my car from their crappy store, just 30 minutes later when I took it to my home I tried to start it and the same problem is there again (it does not start till I try several times) , so I took it back to them and I told them and the bad person who is working in the auto. Service went to me car and started it and it started immediately and I told him that was because it still warm and he did not believe (Like I am lying about my own car) then he told me that they will keep it there overnight and they will fix it in the morning. The next morning I called them and they told me they tried to start it in the morning but it did not start, so the mechanic exchanged a set of plugs (which is acceptable) and he exchanged the oil and the filter (I do not know how he thinks that that was the problem) and they charged me another $100 cad I told them why did you make me pay for the battery and the alternator if they were not the problem and the person there told me, even with all the things that they did it will not start tomorrow in the morning (Look how much he trusted his mechanics work) then after I asked him so why should I pay if they did not even fix the problem he said I will stop arguing with you and you are "rude" can you see the quality of costumer service they have.
I went out to take my car and for my surprise that my car was completely dead, silent nothing work in it, not even a click. I talked to the manager and he tried to start my car and as I said it was deadly silent. So he called the mechanics and they all tried for few minutes, and nothing, so the manager told me they will nt be able to work on it tonight and they will work on it tomorrow. I told the manager that I just want my car as I brought it, and it was running and I drove it to their store, and I am not willing to pay any more money, so the "professional" manager told me we can not make it run again if your not willing to pay, and even if it was our fault so the mechanic who will look for the loose wire or the problem should be paid for his work $ 105cad / hr.
Can anybody believe that there is such a bad service in a developed country like canada. To close the story when I left my car there and I told them to fix it they left it in the parking lot overnight unlocked, so any one was welcome to open the door and take whatever he needs (radio, cd player, baby booster seat, or even their new battery). My car still there and I am looking for a real mechanic to be towed to.
Please be sure not to be fooled by the name of this bad company, I thought the large companies have employees who are concerned about its name, not a bunch of thieves.
recent visit to canadian tire in port perry last wednesday to purchase items go to check out no staff on cash tills two staff on cutomer service desk dealing with returns one trying to process a customers credt card for 5 minutes by this time 10 people waiting to cash out asked staff member if they could open a cash out lady (catherine snapped back she was coming, no manners no words exchanged like thank you, how are you., sorry for the delay. Why open a millon doller store with no staff. spoken to others in the town who also complain about the lack of service, stopped using canadain tire for auto repairs years ago for bad workmanship and over pricing.looking at other coments on the web its time canadain tire started to wake up. We have a Wal mart opening in the town this year i would think this would motivate candain tire but i doubt it.
scam and fraud!
Got a rain check at ct for a brad nailer on jan. 13 had to prepay for it was told 4-6 weeks for it to come in it is now march 08 and after yet another trip to ct to get an update we are no closer to receiving our product than we were on jan 13. If you are told 4-6 weeks it should be 4-6 weeks especially for a prepaid item. No one out there could even tell us when it would be coming in.
A raincheck does not guarentee a product, it only guarentee the products price WHEN/IF it arrives. I don't understand why you would have to pre-pay for the product with a raincheque. That does not add up.
A raincheck does not require payment. Why would you pre-pay for a product and need a raincheck. If you are paying to the product at time of the sale, you don't need a raincheck.
Besides, you are not out the $$. Just get your money back with your receipt.
poor customer service!
I took my vehicle to Canadian Tire ONCE for service, only to have the estimated price mysteriously increase by almost %80. I asked to have all the old parts returned, and this request was noted on the work order before the service began. The parts managed to disappear before I arrived to pick up the vehicle, so my willingness to cooperate also disappeared. The situation got noisy and ugly, but I won. Canadian Tire has reached new highs in LOW customer service. And it's not just in the Auto Service Department.
Every area of every CanTire I've visited has poorly stocked shelves, messy aisles, improperly (or unlabeled) merchandise, and items in the wrong bins. Perhaps if they stopped hiring teenagers at minimum wage, and actually TRAINED their staff, most of these problems could be rectified.
And I'm getting really tired of dealing with (otherwise unemployable) females that are too busy yapping with each other to help the customers. CanTire head office isn't the least bit interested in dealing with the situation. As long as they keep making money nothing will ever change.
I strongly advice everyone to avoid the auto service department, and be sure to complain long and loud about every shortcoming.

unfair practice!
I had a very bad experience with Canadian Tire Auto Service (2160 Carling Ave, Ottawa) on Jan 13 (Sunday), 2008. They installed a wrong front driving axle at passenger side in my car. After I asked them to restore my car to its original condition, they left the wrong axle in my car and let me drive home. The wrong axle was found and taken out by another mechanic in Tony Graham (1955 Merivale Road) right next day. I picked up my car at Tony Graham and bought back the wrong axle on Jan 16.

What do you expect from someone making minimum wage lol? They are always lazy
I was at Canadian Tire, purchasing ball equipment for my children. I purchased 2 pairs of baseball shoes that were ticketed at 19.99 per pair. I went thru the til, and the teller, pulled the tag off that had the price off and proceeded to charge me 22.99 per pair for the shoes. My sister was behind me, purchasing the same thing for her son, and the teller did the same thing. When we got out to the truck, she mentioned this to me. I took mine back to customer service, and they made him pull the tags out of the garbage to find out, they were tagged at 19, 99 and he was just too lazy to ask for a override, so he pulled the tag and charged us 22.99 for the three pairs of shoes. I am NOT impressed. Yes, I got the refund, but the fact that the teller had no conscience and was going to rip us off was unbelievable.

My car was diagnosed with a bad slave cylinder for the clutch. After Agreeing to the quote I was told it would be ready later in the afternoon. I called at 2:45 and was told it woulfd be another hour. I called back at 3:45 and the car was not ready. The service advisor as well as the mechanic already had left for the day. I was not happy as I had to already...

I also found this odd... but CTC gave me a number to call and it turned out there was a product recall on the charger.
They are sending me a new charger in the mail... no hassle!
