Colston Hall is situated in Badingham (about 15 miles north of Woodbridge) and is set in a lovely rural location. The hosts are pleasant, there was always hot water available and the breakfast was fine - although a menu as to what was available would have been appreciated.
We booked two rooms - "The Hayloft" and "The Tack" rooms and we were very disappointed that neither room matched the internet description of them. The "Tack" room was very cramped and gloomy and we felt that it was unsafe to have the window open at night as it was on the ground floor at the front of the building.
The entrance door for these two rooms did have a lock fitted but the hosts left it unlocked, so neither room felt particularly secure - especially at night.
The "Hayloft" was described as "Deluxe" "King Size" but did not match either description in our view. It felt no bigger than a standard double and with its sloping ceilings and low roof beams it felt quite cramped. The bathroom for this room was across a landing which was very inconvenient - especially at night and with the entrance door left unlocked it felt unsafe too.
Neither room had air conditioning or heating on - we visited in early June when it was cold and wet outside and rather cool sitting inside at night.
Both rooms are in need of refurbishment - especially the sanitary ware in the bathrooms.
We had difficulty turning on the shower in the "Hayloft" room. There were no instructions. To prevent any water damage to the carpet, we used one of the hand towels in the bathroom. The next day we left the wet towel in the shower tray for washing but the host just hung it up in the room [where nothing seemed to dry]. We asked if the towel could be replaced and were told "we don't wash them everyday". However, when we explained what had happened they did change the towel.
The milk sachets in our rooms were at least one year out of date, and some of the other in-room and breakfast table provisions were more than 3 years out of date! At our request, fresh provisions were supplied by the hosts. We are now aware of the fact that previous guests had drawn attention to this issue but nothing had been done by the owners to rectify it and Booking.com had not checked that it had been dealt with either.
Overall, we felt that the accommodation was over-priced and that the on-line description of these two rooms cannot be relied upon. We shall not rely on Booking.com in future.
Recommendation: Lovely location but very basic accommodation with unappealing bathrooms.
