I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding a lack of notification for a recent charge from Surfshark on my account for the amount of $ 117,81
My account is configured to receive alerts for various transactions, a service that USAA has consistently provided in the past. Specifically, I regularly receive real-time notifications for purchases made through vendors like Temu, as well as for high-value transactions (e.g., charges when I buy plane tickets. These alerts allow me to verify and authorize purchases before they are finalized.
However, when Surfshark renewed my VPN membership, I received no notification or request for authorization from USAA. This lack of communication prevented me from intervening in a transaction I did not intend to renew.
I am concerned by the inconsistency of your security protocols. If USAA’s system is designed to flag and verify expensive purchases to protect the account holder, there is no logical reason why a subscription renewal of a similar or significant nature should bypass these same safeguards. As a customer, I rely on the bank to maintain a uniform standard of transaction monitoring.
To resolve this matter, I am requesting the following:
A formal explanation as to why certain vendors (like Temu) trigger security notifications while others (like Surfshark) do not.
Assistance in reversing the charge, as the lack of notification deprived me of the opportunity to decline the transaction.
A review of my account alert settings to ensure that all future recurring charges over a certain threshold require my explicit confirmation.
I have been a loyal member of USAA and expect the high standard of proactive service that your institution claims to provide. I look forward to your prompt response regarding this discrepancy and the resolution of the disputed charge.
