United States Postal Service [USPS] - Rude and unprofessional clerks including postmaster

This is with regards to the misconduct of the employees of the Great Neck Post Office located at 1 Welwyn Rd, Great Neck, NY 11021.

On Monday 3/7/2022, we took passport photo for my daughter which cost $15. The picture was taken by Sue Thomas, we noted to her that the picture had a gray background but Sue Thomas along with Marty who was working that day, both confirmed that if the picture didn’t get accepted, they would give a refund.

On 3/10/2022 (Thursday), we went to the Manhasset Post Office (28 Maple Pl, Manhasset, NY 11030). The staff there was all very courteous and when we handed the application to an employee, David, he said the background was too dark and there was a chance of rejection by passport agency. He informed us to take a new passport photo across the street at Bobs Photo Manhasset (405 Plandome Rd, Manhasset, NY 11030). After we took the new photo, we submitted it along with the passport application at the Manhasset Post Office.

On 3/10/2022 around 3:30pm, we went to the Great Neck Post Office seeking the refund. The staff at Great Neck were confrontational and rude, they loudly questioned why the picture wasn’t accepted and passed it around to other employees claiming the pictures should had been accepted and refused me refund. Carlos (the postmaster) eventually came out and stated that “he is the boss here”, we explained the situation to him again, only seeking for a refund. After a short conversation, Carlos sarcastically said “if it makes you feel any better, here’s $20, take it and go”, he took a $20 bill out of his pocket and handed it to me. I stated that I didn’t want his money and that USPS is the one that needed to refund me but he abruptly left. As we prepare to leave while packing away all the receipts we had, Sue Thomas asked us for a $5 change, I was amazed given the lengthy argument this has been while there were other customers waiting in line. At this point other customers spoke out in agreement with me that Carlos said specifically “take it and go”. As the other customers defended us, Carlos came back out to the room, with both hands pressed and palms touching, made a deep bow and said he was sorry so take the money and go. As I am Asian American, I took that to be a racially motivated gesture to mock me, nonetheless I left to prevent further confrontation.

The employees at Great Neck Post Office did not adhere to the standards of basic customer service but were intentionally rude and actively seeking confrontation with us. There were always complaints about this post office from other residents and it’s well-known within the town of Great Neck. I just hope that this complaint would make the workers understand that their behavior is not just poor customer service, but complete lack of professionalism, common sense and courteous among people.

Desired outcome: The local branch postmaster Carlos fosters toxic environment among the clerks to treat the consumers rudely. His unprofessionalism needs to be escalated to his manager so they are aware of the complaint.
