I planned to use my debit card at a Sunoco fuel pump to fill up my tank like I usually do but unbeknownst to me the station put a $75 hold on my account (there was twice that in the account) and still declined the card.
I reran it as credit which I found out put an additional $100 hold on my account and of course didn't let me pump gas.
My bank told me I have to wait up to 5 business days for these holds to drop off - in the meantime I can't use my card for any amount even though I physically have funds in the account. I will NEVER use a Sunoco station again - I have never had this problem before, anywhere.

Went to local Sunoco station in Chelsea, MI on 1/10/2011. Gas price was $3.09 for regular, but when I swiped my debit card, price showed $3.19. Double checked posted prices and it is 10 cents more for "credit". Without even putting nozzle into my car, I hit Cancel and left, got gas down the road. When I checked my account online, Sunoco had a $25 charge as a pre-auth, but dated for 1/13, still showed as a debit out of my funds. My bank advised keeping an eye on it to make sure it dropped off the next day, or at least by 1/13, which is today and is still there. Like "Missing Money" above, I, of course, have no receipt as I didn't pump any gas. I will avoid this company at all costs in the future. Imagine the interest they're making off funds that aren't theirs if this is standard practice and they hold consumers' money for 3-4 days each!
The Gas Station should have generated a cancellation of the pre-authorization. The bank received the request and authorized the transaction. If the cancellation message is not received the bank can drop the pre-authorization if the merchant calls and identifies the transaction otherwise the pre-authorization will stay on the account for the days the bank had defined. Merchant has no access to those funds unless they issue the clearing item. This type of situation should be referred to debit or credit card marks like VISA or MasterCard, they have rules that should control those types of misuse of service by merchants.
btw -its not the station that does the pre-authorization charge on your debit, its your bank. never use your debit card to pay at the pump. always pay inside pre-pay or have them charge you after pumping. banks don't like to tell you that, they try to mask it as the customer holding your funds.
absolutely do that. The difference in price is supposed to be for paying cash. some stations get this right, others take advantage ofit. Your credit price should be comparable to other stations, and the cash price is supposed to be a discount for paying cash. if the credit price is a lot more than the competitor prices, then go somewhere else.

My husband and I were highly regarded customers of Sunoco Oil for several years with an impecable record until one day last year I stopped in for gas at the corner of Airport -Pulling Rd & Radio Rd in Naples Fla. My husband and I always pay at the pump and in trying to do so, it indicated for me to see the manager. I walked inside and the manager stated my card was declined then screamed at me while in a heated rage, ordered me out of the store calling me a " DEAD BEAT BILL PAYER" and ordered me never to return to his store with a "Bad credit card again!" and continued to say while pointing his finger at me in a rage, " If I paid my bills, my card would not be declined!" I assured him my card was in perfect standing that it was the computer in the pump that was malfunctioning and to please call customer service. That only riled him even more to the point I thought he was having a heart attack. He then atarted coming towards me in a rage waving his arms ordering me to leave the sotre. I left terribly shaken. I then immediately phoned your customer service and spoke with a nice young lady who was shocked to learn what had just taken place, having given her the address and store number. She proceeded to say that our account was in perfect standing. She recommended I phone the police due to his threats and also contact the district supervisor in Fort Myers and file a complaint. That was his job to check into this matter. My husband followed through in contacting both parties and filed the complaint. A Naples police officer met with my husband at the gas station and confronted the manager, who lied to the police officer about having a security tape on the premise. The manager stated I instigated the whole incident. The officer ordered him to show him the tape where it showed quite the contrary to his allegations. The officer recommened to my husband to contact the district manager and stated a copy of the police report will be available in 3 to 4 days. My husband not only called this district manager, he also made numerous calls to customer service which subsequently lead to a supervisor...WITH OUT ANY SATISFACTION! YOUR DISTRICT MANAGER DID NOT DO ONE THING TO RECTIFY THIS INEXCUSABLE BEHAVIOR TOWARD ME. HE NOT ONLY DEFAMED MY CHARACTER, HE INSULTED AND EMBARRASSED THE HELL OUT OF ME IN FRONT OF ANOTHER PATRON THAT WAS THERE BUYING LOTTERY TICKETS. THAT MAN STILL CONTINUES TO WORK AT THAT SAME LOCATION and from several reliable sources said he is still very rude. (They no longer patronize any of your gas affiliates due to my situation!) I understood you are responsible for your employees and how they treat your customers that are on your property as any company would be. I made a gas purchase of $10 in cash and $6 off of my debit card.
When I was dispensing the gas, I noticed the price the attendent charged was $2.95/gallon instead of $2.85/gallon.
If you use your debit/credit card, they charge an extra $0.10 per dollar, but $0.10 less if you use cash - the attendent put the tender as ALL CREDIT CARD.
BE CAREFUL WHEN USING CASH AND CREDIT CARD TO PURCHASE FUEL WITHIN THE SAME TRANSACTION! They will charge you the HIGHER amount even though MOST of the purchase was made with cash!
This is actually something that certain chains of gas stations or certain states do. They will list 2 separate prices for both cash and credit, and it's usually due to extra fees associated with credit card usage.
I know it sucks, but this is something you're going to find. I saw it a lot in New York, and it can't really be gotten past.
rude and unfair buissness
My son went into this gas station to purchase cigs and used a coupon and later i went in and tried to use a coupon for cigs also and the employee refused to accept my coupon and was very rude. and when i tried to explain he got beligerant and told me to leave. unlucky for him i am unemployed and will be standing in front of his store monday morning holding a sign to let others know how rude and unfair the storeowner and employees are. I have nothing better to do so if he wants to treat people that way i will return the favor. the gas station is a sunoco gas station incircleville ohio on main st. please avoid this place. i cant find a job but yet rude people who cant talk to customers can find a job. Sunoco station starts running up cents before you even pump gas. I have a receipt and picture of pump. Street attendent asked what to do about it. Was willing to pay cents reimburse for the transaction but how any customers are they stealing from.

I wrote to you before about the daily begger a your A-plus Mini Mart at 514 Highland Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. He is out there begging every day! He also begs at Giant Eagle and Citizen's Bank ATM. Do we have to be confronted by a beggar everytime we buy your gasolene? Today there were two (2) beggers! I do not think this present a profession appearance to see not one but two beggars at your gasolene station!

I have been a daily customer at this station and everytime I would go in when the manager is there, she is doesnt greet any customers, also, very rude and disrespectful. I have heard many times from her employees that shes the worst person to work for and that she treats her employees like she treats customers. Please I hope we can resolve this major issue. I had to replace rear passenger-side tire that was damaged due to pothole. Upon inspection, a gentleman whom I suspect to be a service manager suggested new tire to replace the damaged one and provided an exact quote of for the tire and installation. I authorized the installation of new tire, and the associate installed Fuzion 245/45/R17 tire to replace the damaged one. After I making of a payment, the associate told me that since he omitted the labor charge for my convenience, I must pay him some “tip”. I had to pay additional $ 10 in cash as I knew he would not let me and my car leave otherwise.
I strongly think this is not a right practice to force the customer to make such contribution after installation and payment, which mean the sale is completed. Not only it is not right, but also I am sure this is illegal as such cash transaction is not traceable, what definitely IRS does not want to see.
The amount is small and I care less about it, but it is really disappointing to see such practice at one of Sunoco service location, especially at the one on the major interstate highway of New Jersey. Such practice must be eliminated immediately, and prevented not to ever happen to any customer.

On November 18, 2019 I purchased REGULAR gas and was charged for PREMIUM. I've owned four sedan-style cars and have ALWAYS buy regular. gas. The attendant was very rude, he insisted it's impossible. The first thing I did was google and see that this DOES HAPPEN.
Now my bank account shows I've been charged more than twice what's on the receipt.
Refuses to tale credit cards. Will only take cash. Will not even tske Sunoco credit card. Also not posted on the machine. This is unacceptable. I expect something to be done as very few people travel with cash. Person inside of store was obnoxious and rude. I had cash but needed to put on an expense report. No receipt either so no reimbursement.

On 8/22 I visited a Sunoco gas station. I went into the station to pay by credit card. Behind the counter was a clerk, who was busy sorting reciepts, and a girl approx. ten years old. I presented my card and was surprised when the child took my card and preceeded to run the transaction thru the credit card machine. To add insult to injury, she made a mistake, and at that point the clerk interviened. It took her 10 minutes to rectify the problem. In the meantime the child continued to wait on customers. This station should be on the worst gas station list... My car broke down at the gas pump at 4:10pm thursday afternoon, head mechanic and the gas attendant were in the garage and saw my car smoking thru the hood and they just walked away. My husband came and asked to speak with the Mechanic and the gas attendant said, "oh he is done for today." All the bays were opened and he was in the shop tinkering around. All the car needed was a clamp and they couldn't help out. It gets worse, this little elderly woman drives in with a flat as I sit there waiting for the tow truck and they told her they couldn't do anything till tomorrow, my husband told the woman he would jack her car up and place her spare on if she wanted but she decided to walk home and leave the car. I will never go to that station again. The gas attendant was the most pathetic person I have ever come across in the customer service world. I should hope his mother, sister and daughter get better treatment from the world of customer service cause no one should ever be treated the way I was treated today. This store is verging on being disgusting! There is a begger who is out in front of this store every day begging. I've talked to the store management about being accosted everytime I come to this station by "their" begger. The store management assured me that they would get rid of the begger! He still out there begging every day! I try to avoid this store whenever possible. I have talked to other customers, especially women, and they feel somewhat threatened by this agressive begger! I asked attendant for $20.00 regular...he came back with my card in hand no receipt, and stated he pumped $48.00, I complained, sating I had only 25 in the bank, he said it already went through. I used my Emirates Bank - Master card at SUNOCO for buying petrol for my car. The Bill came upto Canadian Dollar $ 51.42
(51.42 * 5.5= AED 282.81).
However, on my text message alert it shows me that my account has been debited AED 436.40.
I would like to have an explanation as to why I was debited with AED 436.40? Please look into the matter and get back to me.
I have the receipt of my purchase as proof. Details of the same are mentioned below for your reference.

Sunoco Gasoline Pumping Station are scamming people. They prices written on their tabloids are not true. I discovered that their sensors are installed incorrect. When I came to their manager she told that they will repair the system. Bu I am sure it was not mistake. They did it on purpose.

its your bank that put the hold on the card, not the gas station. banks do that to ensure your balance covers the charges. pay inside first with a debit card to avoid this. If your bank holds this money for longer than 24 hours, its time to switch banks. 2 things never to use your debit card for - hotels and pay at the pump gas.
