I have been paying homeowners insurance premiums for years and expected State Farm to stand behind me when I needed help. Unfortunately, my recent experience has been extremely disappointing.
After a hot water heater on the second floor of my home failed, water poured through the house causing extensive damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, flooring, electrical components, and other parts of the structure. I paid over $4,200 out of pocket to replace the water heater and had contractors spend weeks performing water mitigation, demolition, drying, and repairs.
At the same time, I filed a claim for weather-related damage affecting my roof, pool, decking, gazebo, and fence following severe storms, hail, high winds, and winter weather in the Dallas area.
The adjuster who inspected my property spent only a short time on site. I specifically requested that the roof, pool, decking, gazebo, and fence be inspected. However, the written coverage decision I later received only discussed the roof and did not mention the pool, decking, gazebo, or fence at all.
State Farm informed me that the covered damages were below my deductible and concluded that the roof damage was due to wear and tear rather than weather. Meanwhile, significant damages documented by contractors were not fully addressed in the report.
What is most frustrating is being asked to file separate claims, each with substantial deductibles, after years of faithfully paying premiums. As a customer, I expected a thorough investigation and fair evaluation of all reported damages.
I am currently appealing the decision and requesting a complete reinspection of the property. My advice to homeowners is to document everything, obtain independent contractor estimates, take extensive photographs, and carefully review every inspection report to make sure all reported damages are actually included.
I hope State Farm will reconsider these claims and provide a complete and fair review of all damages reported.
