Snake oil
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia l
Snake oil is an expression that originally referred to fraudulent health products or unproven medicine but has come to refer to any product with questionable or unverifiable quality or benefit. By extension, a snake oil salesman is someone who knowingly sells fraudulent goods or who is himself or herself a fraud, quack, charlatan, or the like.
Eric Minkiewicz is the owner of RBA of Eastern New York. This company was previously known as Huff N Puff.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Despite what you may have been led to believe with all of the advertising, ordering replacement windows thru RBA of Eastern NY is ordering with Eric Minkiewicz and NOT Andersen Windows and Doors nor Renewal by Andersen. You are actually ordering with Eric Minkiewicz who then orders the windows with RBA.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
RBA also manufactures 2 other replacement windows: The Andersen 100 and The Woodwright. You can get these windows at places like Home Depot, Erie Materials, 84 Lumber, Curtis Lumber, Williams Lumber etc. With a few slight style differences, The Andersen 100 is the exact same window as the franchise window. The Woodwright having a wood frame with Fibrex veneered to the outside is stronger and more attractive than the all Fibrex franchise window.
The Andersen 100 costs 75% LESS than RBA Eastern NY window. So, a house of 20 windows roughly would cost $30, 000 with RBA Eastern NY and $7, 500 with The Andersen100 window.
The Woodwright costs 50% LESS than RBA Eastern NY window. So, a house of 20 windows roughly would cost $30, 000 with RBA Eastern NY and $15, 000 with The Woodwright window.
According to The Times Union newspaper, RBA Eastern NY makes 85% of its money with replacement windows.
If you are a potential customer for replacement windows, it makes no sense to go to RBA Eastern NY
If you are an employee of Eastern NY understand that you are like everyone else, you have free will. You have no excuse to work for such a place.
If you are a friend of Eric Minkiewicz, you should reexamine your ethics.
If you are family of Eric Minkiewicz, especially his parents who started Huff N Puff as a regular home improvement company, my condolences.
What bothers me the most is how the public is mislead that they are dealing directly with the manufacturer. YOU ARE NOT!
This is a franchise that is owned by Eric Minkiewicz who lives with his wife, Holly, at 6001 Queen Mary Court Schenectady, New York Phone
[protected]. Andersen Windows and Doors also sells their replacement windows thru retail outlets like Home Depot, Williams Lumber etc. The retail outlets replacement window is better looking, stronger, installer friendly and AT LEAST 40% LESS EXPENSIVE
IT MAKES NO SENSE TO GOT TO ERIC MINKIEWICZ'S FRANCHISE AND PAY HIM HIS OUTLANDISH PRICES
This privately owned franchise advertises that they have put the WOW in replacement windows. Their current gimmick is for every window you buy at list you can also buy one at 40% off. Home Depot has an Andersen Replacement Window called The Woodwright. It is stronger, more attractive and installer friendly. Even with this 40% off marketing scheme, The Woodwright is still, AT LEAST, 25% less expensive than Eric Minkiewicz;s absurd price. So, they are correct! RBA of Eastern New York has put the WOW in replacement windows!
In addition the above:
If you are a past customer of RBA of Eastern New York, you should consider legal action!
THIS COMPLAINT HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED BUT YOU NO LONGER HAVE IT LISTED. I WOULD APPRECIATE IF YOU WOULD PUT IT BACK ON THE INTERNET. I ALSO UPGRADED IT RECENTLY BUT YOU HAVE NOT INCLUDED THAT ALSO
Product Duplication
Since 2009, Renewal By Andersen has been marketing thru a separate list of dealers than their own privately owned franchises, basically, the same window - The Andersen 100. I repeat, the same window that their own franchises sell. It makes no sense to me, but hey, if Andersen won't back their own franchises then why should WE. What is even more remarkable is the price difference between the franchises and the other outlets. Read the following article:
Andersen Fibrex® Window Frame Information
andersen100series.homestead.com/.../Our_Andersen_100_Series_Fibrex...
then go the following website and find your Andersen 100 dealer near you:
100 Series - Andersen Windows
www.andersenwindows.com/products/.../100-serie...
Andersen Corporation
Andersen 100 Series windows and patio doors are come in deep, rich colors outside and are made with our unique, revolutionary Fibrex® composite material.
The huge price difference reveals the following: THE FRANCHISES ARE WAY OVERPRICED FOR A VERY BASIC WINDOW.
Price Quality
We purchased 4 windows and were told we could add additional windows later at a set price.
I was not excited about the overall price but decided to start with 4. About a year later another rep came out
(I was told the other rep no longer worked with the company) Bottom line I was quoted a number almost 35% higher
than my original quote and told that this was as discounted as it gets. After this I started comparing notes with some friends and a neighbor. I am glad I didn't waste any more money with these people. I have just completed All of my windows with a comparable product that looks great and has a superior warranty. Happy to not be throwing anymore money away!

Reality Check #1
When you are dealing with any for profit business, current and future particulars should be in writing.
When you are dealing with a Renewal by Andersen franchise, current and future particulars MUST be in triplicate and notarized.
Scammed
I made a very big mistake when I signed a contract for window replacements this past spring! It has been a nightmare that won't go away! I was given the wrong date (3/18/2014 included Sunday) on the cancellation part of the contract. The following Wednesday and Thursday I tried to call the salesman to cancel but he never answered my calls. I know that I missed the 3 day window by speaking to someone in their Renewal by Anderson office on Friday, March 21st after signing the contracts on Saturday, March 15th. I did speak to a secretary and told her that I wanted to cancel the contract and the measurement appointment. She told me that the person I needed to speak to was away and she would have her return my call the following Monday. On Tuesday the manager told me I couldn't cancel. I think I have been scammed by Renewal by Andersen in Northborough, MA.
The Manager at Renewal by Anderson was already holding half the loan, $3, 407.33 from a company called GreenSky. A $100 check given to them for a building permit but that was finally returned. They are trying to keep 25% of the loan amount! This is over $1600 for nothing. NO ORDER WAS EVER MADE FOR THE WINDOWS AS NO MEASUREMENTS WERE EVER TAKEN. I feel that this cancellation penalty is very unfair.
The window replacement cost was supposed to include a 20% discount for buying five windows plus an additional 5% discount for signing the contract that same day that the salesman was there. I feel that the price ($6714) of these windows to TOO high. The manager of Renewal by Anderson claims their pricing is regulated by the government.
This whole situation has been a nightmare for me. I now find myself unemployed and facing a debt that should not even exist!
Dear Scammed by Renewal by Andersen
Your quoted price must have been $8, 950 for 5 windows to allow for a 25% discount for a bottom line of $6, 714. Now I want you to go to any Andersen retail outlet you want (Home Depot, etc) with the measurements of your windows and ask them how much is their Andersen replacement window called The Woodwright. You will be shocked on how much less this window - which is also made be RBA - costs compared to how much the RBA FRANCHISE quoted you. To make matters worse, this window is far superior than the one you bought. In addition, the manager of the privately owned franchise where you bought the windows is a LIAR. Their prices are not regulated by the government. They are determined by how much this privately owned business feels they can gouge the general public. You should have looked at this complaint site BEFORE you bought!

Do not trust the management of this company. They do not pay for work performed. They lie about the number of appointments you will get. A huge waste of time. The sales manager, ricky, it a liar. Trust no one here. This has been happening for years. Ricky is despised - hated universally. As a customer, consider how you will be managed

Windows
I had ordered 6 windows by renewal by anderson, they've only installed 2 windows, now granted i've only paid for 2 windows but the agreement was after each window was installed I would pay the balance, and it worked just fine. but they never came back to install the other 4 windows, i've called over ten times and I even called and left a nessage on the co owners cell phone, and still nothing. it blows my mind, me having over 30 windows in my home and they don't want my money. i'll never refer this lousy company to my worst enemy.

Hi Julian, I wanted to reach out to you directly about your concerns with Renewal by Andersen of Denver. I’ve already contacted our customer service team as well as the the Denver location. You should be receiving a call from this location today. If you do not hear from them, please contact me at RbACommunications@andersencorp.com. Thanks - Renewal by Andersen Corporate
1999 Design Flaw
I have spent the past 13 years trying to get Renewal By Andersen to
replace their defective windows. After after the first winter of 1999, it was obvious
that the windows leaked around the moving parts. It took multiple call and emails
to get them to finally recognize that this was a basic design flaw for which there was no fix. I have had taped windows for the past 13 years. Some years I had to put duct-tape in the windows.
I had also contacted Andersen Windows and also filed a complaint for which I received an Andersen Corporate Complaint Number in June, 2000!
In 2010, they offered to replace the windows with an upgraded window ans screen set along with a New Window Warranty.
Very Nice, .
Except the Local Installer, Window Place, knowing the market very well, refuses to supply pictures of the proposed exterior finish for submittal to Homeowners Association. Instead Renewal Corporate has proposed to repay my original ~7000.00 price of the install done in 1999. Except, the local installer mistakenly sent me an email indicating the price was ~13, 000.
I have just recently contacted the local installer with a potential solution, with no response. Typical of Window Place in Washington, D.C.
Do not be fooled by this bunch. They will screw you at every turn and then claim
ignorance.
BEWARE!
PLS NOTE:
The issue I have with the Renewal By Andersen Windows is the sliding surfaces leak severly. It is most noticeable during the winter. They installed 12 Double Hung Windows in 2000.
After many years of emauils and time on our part, tyhey are porposing to buy me off with the original price of 12 windows ~$7200.00. Of course that is 2000 prices. The local francehisee accidentally included me on an email last year indicating the 2011 prices were ~11500.00. You can see that they want to get me off their back.
NOT TO HAPPEN
June 28, 2012
Just wanted to give everyone an update:
RBA has sent us a "Release" form with provisions stating we are not to make any derogatory comments in returrn for which they will install the new 12 windows. Do not fall for this trickl. They are trying to change the terms of the Warranty.
These windows exhibit a "BASIC DESIGN FLAW" for which there is no fix or repair per RBA's Technician.
I have used duct-tape on the inside of my home for 12 years now, and even though the new windows are ordered, and sitting in a warehouse, RBA wants us to sign a "Release". Nothing in the Warranty mentions a "Release".
Not a chance. I urge everyone to avoid this Company as they will screw the Consumer at every turn and then claim ignorance of their activity.
They cannot be trusted with your home's windows.
Andersen Corporation should be ashamed. Pls note that the emails from Renewal By Andersen all carry the
AndersenCorp.com address. This emphasizes the responsibility Andersenn Corp has for its Sunsidairy, Renewal By Andersen and their shoddy business practices.
If I were you I would try writing a review in Google places (google+ page) under Renewal by Andersen near Herndon, Virginia. Renewal wont tell you this but they only refer their really good customer experiences to this site... best of luck...
Below has been copied from the officfial website of RBA. At best, it is misleading. At worst, it is a deliberate lie. Let me explain.
RBA is both a manufacturer and a franchiser of privately owned franchises that sell and install their windows. As a manufacturer, they make replacement windows for their privately owned franchises as well as the thousands of Andersen (main company) retail outlets like Home Depot etc. The non franchise windows are wood with Fibrex (wood composite of vinyl and wood chips) claded to the exterior. The franchise windows are all Fibrex. RBA does not make patio doors. There is no such thing as a replacement patio door. Andersen (main company) makes the patio doors which are sold at all Andersen retail outlets as well as RBA franchises.
The Andersen retail outlet windows are named The Woodwright. They are stronger, more attractive and cost approximately half what the franchise costs. The reason for this huge price difference is simple: the franchises have protected noncompete territories while the regular retail outlets compete with many different entities.
I agree with your statement " they will screw you at every turn and then claim ignorance"
STAY AWAY FROM RBA FRANCHISES
Washington, DC- MD & VA Replacement Windows
Renewal by Andersen of Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia is proud to serve the window replacement and patio door replacement needs of the Washington D.C.-Maryland - Northern Virginia area. We are the window replacement division of Andersen Windows, drawing on the Andersen tradition of over 100 years of quality, innovation and craftsmanship.
Do not work here
When I was hired at RBA (Renewal By Andersen or Southard Corp) I was told a portion of my commission would be put into an account also known as a black book. I was also told (along with a few other sales employees) that at any point in time the funds in this black book could be requested and withdrawn. After I was terminated by voice mail I found out the only way this black book money can be withdrawn is either by claiming mileage or by termination. Needless to say I haven't worked there since the 1st week in June and guess what... no check yet. (I wonder who collects the interest on the black book account?) continuing on...
After working for RBA and going through countless gallons of gas (that would not be reimbursed) while going out on non-screened leads, trying to sell someone 10 windows for $19, 000 or more depending on the window. When I wasn't meeting the monthly quota for one month my "tools" or my leads were taken away from me. It seems as if they wanted to get rid of me before the 90 day probationary period ended so it would be impossible to claim unemployment.
Going out on my last lead (which was a lead that was going to be canceled) myself and a co-worker spent four hours in the home to close the sale. I was told I didn't sale the door properly and needed to mark up the price 5 to 6 times. I was informed of this after I had already returned to the home 2 too 3 times on my own time to fix small words or use a different color ink on the paperwork and re-writing all the paperwork at least two times. I never knew anything about marking the door up from retail price of $830.00 to commission price of $3000.00 it wasnt in the price book nor was it in my training. It was not noted anywhere in the pricing book that was given to me, So now I'm told my co-worker and I lost our $800.00 commission. Later I found out after a meeting that we may get $250.00 a piece. Needless to say 6 weeks later and after a sale when I checked to see if my payroll was there, the paperwork cannot be found. How convenient.
As for the consumer, if employees are treated this way well ... you can fill in the blanks.
I am at my wits end with this company! I paid the $20,000.00 down for windows and doors LAST MAY was told they'd be installed by end of Aug LAST YEAR, They installed them the END of Nov last year and Still haven't FINISHED the JOB! See pics above. All that is AFTER they installed and had to redo the trim! WHAT A MESS. ENDLESS STRESS AND MASSIVE HEADACHES
No wonder they can’t keep their employees! Every time they send someone out to finish the job they started almost one year ago, I get 2 New people who been there Less than 6 mos, NOT LIKE THEIR ADS CLAIM IN TV MORE THAN 25 yrs EXPERIENCE OR 37 YEARS EXPERIENCE! They ARE LIARS! And I’d NEVER Recommend THEM! NOT EVER! WORST EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE!
Bad customer service comes from the top
After catching the salesman in a lie (shocking, I know), and lack of confidence in their contractor who came to my home smelling like whiskey, I was actually sent an email where the owner Mike Watson at Renewal by Andersen of Greater Philadelphia insulted me personally. Nice business you got going there.
after being promised by the owners and the salesman of Renewal by Anderson Houston/Tomball, Texas that all of the contractors are screened through a rigorous background check and that they do NOT hire felons of any kind, I was shocked by the fact that the contractor was indeed a felon, of multiple charges. When confronted by findings they had the audacity to tell me that my information was wrong. If you plan on buying from Renewal by Anderson of Houston/Tomball Texas be prepared to have felons working in your home!
Pricing
Currently (fall 2011), this franchise is advertising $100 per window discount sale as their greatest sale ever. This is a lie! With the average price of a window being $1500, this constitutes a 7% discount. They routinely discount their windows 25%. In addition, you can purchase and have installed a RBA window (The Woodwright) at any of the Andersen retail outlets for 50% of the franchise cost. Stay away from RBA!
Below is an ad from Craigslist for sales reps for this branch in Fishkill. Please notice it does NOT state the name of the company. You should also know "Rich" is new. He replaced the old manager who did not obtain enough sales for this branch. The main reason people don't buy these windows is because they are astronomically expensive. Now judge for yourself if this company is open and honest with its own people let alone with their potential customers. (Date 12-30-11)

As a subsidiary of Andersen Windows & Doors, RBA has several functions.
1) They manufacture replacement windows for their own list of privately owned franchises that have names like Renewal by Andersen of the Hudson Valley & Huff N Puff.
2) They manufacture a replacement window and a new construction window (The Andersen 100) for a list of privately owned construction companies located in most areas of the country.
3) They manufacture a replacement window and a new construction window (The Woodwright) that is sold in all the Andersen retail outlets in the country.
The franchises charge the most and have the high pressure selling. The Andersen 100 costs 1/4 of the cost as a franchise window while The Woodwright costs 1/2 the cost of the franchise window. The Woodwright anyone can install (Andersen even provides instructions) while the 100 and the franchise windows must be installed by the retail outlet. The Woodwright is a wood frame window with Fibrex (wood composite) on the exterior and the 100 and the franchise window are all Fibrex. With just a few slight differences in manufacturing, the 100 and the franchise window are basically identical.
The franchises market themselves as the "exclusive" replacement window division of Andersen Windows & Doors.
This is false and misleading marketing.
RBA manufactures replacement as well as new construction windows.
RBA sells to not only to their privately owned franchises but also to other construction companies as well as to thousands of retail outlets (like Home Depot) nationwide.
RBA has only one exclusivity - their privately owned franchises have an exclusive territory to sell RBA franchise windows in.
RBA makes no patio door nor entry door. The franchises sell Andersen (main company) doors just like thousands of retail outlets nationwide. The franchises also sell Pro Via entry doors without informing the customer it is a seperate and privately owned company that has an extensive marketing and distribution system of its own.
With The Woodwright being stronger and more attractive, less expensive, no high pressure selling and install friendly, I see no reason to give your hard earned money to a franchise that misrepresents who they are as well as what they do. Stay away from RBA franchises.
They replaced some windows in a townhouse and then went door to door soliciting work. They were told at least 4 times that this is a private community and that no soliciting is allowed, but just went to another street in the community. One homeowner even called the police. We are posting on our community website - 263 homes - not to do business with this company.
overpriced
This franchise is currently (fall 2011) advertising "Their Biggest Fall Sale Ever". This is a ;lie. With the average price of a RBA window installed being $1500, this sale is for 7% off the list price. Routinely, they discount their windows 25%. In addition, you can buy a window made by RBA (The Woodwright) at any Andersen outlet costing approx 50% less than the ones sold thru their franchises. Stay away from RBA!

NEWS FLASH -The supposed sale has been changed. It is now - buy one window and get 50% off the second window. As to why the change, I assume my post played a part. However, here is the new dynamics -
Normal - 2 windows @ $1500 each = $3, 000 less 25% =$2250
New Sale - 2 windows @ $1500 each =$3, 000 less 50% of $1500 ($750) = $2250
WOW, WHAT A SALE!
Stay away from this franchise
Currently, Eric Menkowitz, the owner of Huff N Puff and Renewal by Andersen of the Hudson Valley (Fishkill, NY), is promoting his windows on the radio. He is promoting buying one RBA window at retail and then buying a second at 40% off. This sounds good except it is NOT, I repeat, NOT a sale. He generally discounts his windows 25% so this supposed sale is actually more expensive than normal.
Example - 2 windows @ $1500 each = $3000 less 25% = $2250
2 windows @ $1500 each = $3000 less 40% of $1500 ($600) = $2400
STAY AWAY from this franchise. Go to Andersen retail outlets like Home Depot, Williams Lumber etc and get a better Andersen replacement window (The Woodwright).at a significant lower and HONEST price.
Dear Linda:
Here are your two major mistakes:
1) You signed in as a male - wrong gender
2) This company - Huff N Puff - does not sell and install windows in the area you live, Wappingers Falls. In fact, it would be illegal if they did.
With the username of " gods honest truth " these two lies as well as many more that are in your post should make you cautious walking outside in a thunderstorm.
I do have a question for you. Please think about your response as long as necessary.
Is it an inherited trait that the woman of your family look like blow fishes or is it only your sister Elsa who has this problem?
Soliciting Business at odd hours
2 men came to solicit business at 8:30PM. I felt that is too late in the day to be doing this. Next morning I called the company and spoke to Christina, the Manager, she said they were "Canvassers" and that they are out in the field until 9PM. I told her that I felt it's a little late to solicit business at that time and she hung up on me. RUDENESS is not tolerated! If this is how they respond to a phone call, can you imagine once they start a job for you?
Qapis, you have three choices. Ignore this situation. Make a complaint with your local town ( solicitation is highly regualted). Accept Michele's invitation to contact her where she will attempt to sell you grossly overpriced windows. Do yourself and your neighborhood a favor - ignore RBA and teach this arrogant franchise a lesson - COMPLAIN!
Qapis,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Renewal by Andersen. We would like to apologize that our canvassers were an inconvenience to you and your family, and that you had such a negative experience speaking with our Renewal by Andersen representative.

At Renewal by Andersen, we are committed to customer service and professionalism, and your feedback will be helpful to us as we work to continue to create better experiences for all of our potential and existing customers.
We would also like the opportunity to speak with you directly about your experience with us, and see if there is any way we can make things right. Please email us at RBALongIsland@gmail.com with your contact information as we would really like to see if we can rectify things.

I am just starting my window shopping and I'm not one to post things on sites whoever, window man, you are not doing shoppers like me a service. You obviously have a grudge or you work for a competing window company. All I gather from this site is that you hate renewal by andersen and you are not a consumer looking for windows or someone who has purchased windows like the rest of us, which is obvious as you post about dealers in kansan, colorodo, ny, maryland etc. you could not have possibly done business with all those dealers.
I appreciate your gusto but you are making it harder for me to learn from real customers with real experiences and that's what I want to read. Start a blog, go to anger management (kidding) or something, I'm sure you have good intentions but your posts are not relevant to real shoppers.
For what it is worth, here are my experiences window shopping so far: I called renewal by andersen and I agree with others, they are very high pressure but that did not bother me as you really can't pressure me into doing something I don't want to do (just ask my husband :)) . I likes some of what they had to say and I'm putting them in the running. I have friends that have andersen windows and they have had no issues. That's what I'm lokking for, I am not expecting to "love" my windows, I want to have them installed and never have to think about them again.
I'll try to remember to keep posting my experiences and who I choose as well as the final outcome so others can read a real customer experience.

HavanaBrian my "facts are straight". The Woodwright is a wood frame window claded on the exterior with fibrex. It is made by RBA to be sold in the Andersen (main company) distribution network. The RBA franchise window is all fibrex that is sold by the privately owned franchises located in the country. It seems you have no idea about how these windows are made and marketed. I suggest you google Andersen and/or go to your nearest Home Depot and pick up a brochure that is available to anyone who wants to educate themselves. I do not love it when the ignorant "speak", however, I am available to help those who truly want to know the truth! In conclusion, "thermal poymer" is PVC (vinyl) and wood is sawdust waste from the manufacturing of Andersen 200 & 400 windows. These two products are combined to make fibrex. RBA also makes certain parts (railings etc) for Trex, the patio decking company.
Windowman, I love when the ignorant speak. Fibrex is a composite material 40% wood 60% thermal polymer. Similar to composite decking. If your going to bash someone at least have you facts straight. Seems you left the window open and your credibility just flew out.
You can get Andersen replacement windows in thousands of retail outlets. Renewal by Andersen is a franchise system that "sells" territories to privately owned companies. These companies sell windows that are made by RBA. RBA also makes The Woodwright replacement window that is sold in all of the Andersen retail outlets (Home Depot ertc). The difference beween them is that the franchise is all Fibrex (vinyl) and The Woodwright is a wood window claded with Fibrex. The franchise window is twice as expensive as The Woodwright eventhough it is solid vinyl
Anyone can uinstall The Woodwright while the franchise one must be installed by the franchise. RBA franchises are notorious for high pressure selling. The originator of this complaint (Window Woman) is, in fact, a RBA sales rep masqurading as a potential customer. I implore all to stay away from RBA franchises and give your buasiness to someone else.
Hi, Just want to share with you my experience with Renewal by Andersen. My house was build in1973 - and has Andersen windows. They are good, but after all that years they need to be replaced. When I started to look for new windows - I wanted to get Andersen's windows and we got it from Renewal by Andersen. But, just in case we started in 3 places - kitchen, living room and slide door to porch. They got installed it on January 19, 2 week later - window in leaving room and slide door started to leak. I don't want to make my story too long and describe all conversation with them - but the end of the story - we found another constructor - and when he opened dry wall over the window - he found that installation was done wrong and if we will wait a half more year - the window would be broken. I will never recommend to anybody dial with Renewal by Andersen, but I like Andersen windows anyway.
Don't Buy Renewal by Andersen Windows
I have just spent a frustrating 6 mos trying to get quality replacement windows in my house. Short story, I was charged $15, 000 for 10 windows, and they are worse quality than standard Andersen windows that you can get from Home Depot for less than $500. The temperature is about 10-12 degrees Fahrenheit colder at the base of their window-the windows are leaky and drafty. They look like crap with glued and stapled vinyl covering the old wood frames that they said they would replace. I have tried to get them to renegotiate the price to one that is more equitable for what they installed but got nowhere. Now I'm headed to litigation. Save yourself the trouble and don't buy Renewal by Andersen. They're a predatory company. They promise you quality work, but I'm left with glass and debris covering the property.

Thanks for the info, window man. To update the saga, I met with a Southard representative. His comment when I complained that the windows leak air? "All windows leak air". Are you kidding me? Why don't they tell you that when they are selling the windows? Anyway, I just sent an exhaustive report with pictures and documentation to the Kansas Attorney General. I plan to start a blog - seems there are enough dissatisfied customers that a class action lawsuit is possible to get these guys to stop advertising their "quality product" with "up to 70% more energy efficient windows" (what they don't tell you is compared to what-an open window?)
If you have had problems with RBA aka Southard Corporation, I encourage you to immediately contact the Kansas Attorney Generals office, http://www.ksag.org/page/file-a-consumer-complaint, to file a complaint. After several letters to the company, a complaint with BBB in Wichita, I finally received a visit from the Southard Representative. He acknowledged that the windows do not look like my previously installed Andersen windows (and said they don't do that kind of installation, completely the opposite of what the salesman claimed), and his answer for leaky windows was that "all windows leak air" (not what they claimed when they were selling me the windows). I have documented everything and I'm hopeful that the attorney general can force this company to stop deceptive sales practices and shoddy workmanship. Here are more photos of windows-would you want windows installed like this?
As promised, here are pics of how the windows looked after installation, a zoom on the shoddy caulking, and an example of the debris left after the wrapping. Unfortunately I didn't take pics of all of the glass they left behind. They never came out to clean up the mess-I was forced to clean it up myself.
You're exactly right. He told me I was getting custom made (full frame replacement), but he wrote up the order as an insert replacement. I don't know anything about windows, so I don't know the difference when I read pages and pages of contract. This sounds like a bait and switch sales practice, don't you think? I have already contacted the BBB (one of those complaints is mine), but now I'm going to contact the KS attorney general's office. "Mad as hell" doesn't even come close to describing what I feel right now. For others contemplating using RBA windows, please check back on this blog-I'll upload pictures of the window installation, and areas under the window covered with broken glass and debris. Again, I really appreciate all of your help, window man.
Window man, thanks for the useful information. I wish I had it before I made the decision to install RBA windows. As an update, a Southard Corp. representative visited my home to look at the windows while I was out of town. I've heard nothing since. I did find that one of the screens has a large tear, and I believe that this was done by the installers and probably they thought I wouldn't notice. After talking with RBA customers and also searching the internet, I think that I was charged about 40-50% over what the normal RBA window costs. Evidently they have a ready-made window and custom. Although I was told I would get a custom window, I got the ready-made, for the custom price. I'm going to offer them a settlement price, and if they refuse (or ignore me as they have done since I've started complaining), I'll have no recourse but to go to litigation. Would appreciate other input as to experiences with RBA in Kansas.

Renewal by Andersen is a huge marketing scam. The General Manager of their Los Angeles branch, Al Alfieri owes me in excess of $5000.00. He’s a liar and a crook!
We had all our windows replaced. They are colder than the windows they replaced. There are drafts around the windows and the double pane glass does not insulate well. We would not recommend them.
Andersen butchered the installation of our entry and storm doors. Air and light (!) between the entry doors and the storm doors installed completely off the threshold with no air seal whatsoever. After a big fight got all our money back. Patio doors installed as part of same order sound like your issue drafty, icing on tracks, air blowing through at footlock. You can put a piece of paper between the stationary and fixed panels, close the door and easily pull the paper out. Their own tech spent an hour at our house going thru everything wrong now their area director says the tech found nothing wrong! Stay away from these folks!
I had 7 windows installed in July for the ridiculous price of $14,000 plus. Winter has not hit yet, so we'll see how efficient they are. Their interior caulk job around the windows was horrendous. Big chunks of caulk in the corners. Someone should have been checking his work. I'll never use or recommend them. For that price, I deserve perfection.
The windows Renewal by Anderson we purchased are drafty and do not even close all the way. We were promised that the new windows would fit into our old frames. They did not. They also left piles of sawdust all over the house. They even have the audacity to continually send us letters, ads and even Christmas cards with advertisements when I have contacted them 3 times to stop sending me mail.
Sounds very much like our experience. We can put a piece of paper between the stationary and sliding panels, close the door, and pull the paper right out. We are contacting state atty general
I live in Northwest Ohio. I purchased 16 Renewal by Andersen replacement windows in June 2021. This winter I noticed they all felt drafty, so I put plastic over two windows and I was very disappointingly shocked to see the plastic bulge into the room. There is a lot of cold air infiltration coming into my house. I’ve notified Renewal by Andersen in their Maumee, Ohio office where the windows were bought. They said they will put in 4 small H sponges in each window, I doubt that will work. I’m so afraid I made a huge mistake to pick Renewal by Andersen for my replacement windows. These windows are much worse that the original windows they took out. I used my 401K to pay for the $34,700 bill. I’m a retired widow. Renewal by Andersen won’t accept my phone calls. I know I only have two years to try and make this right, their instillation warranty is only good for two years. I recommend no one buy Renewal by Andersen replacement windows, you may be sorry like me.
Sounds like our issue. We can put a piece of paper between the stationary and sliding panels, close the door, and easily pull the paper out. The area director though says their tech found nothing wrong. Outrageous! Contacting atty general.

Do not buy Anderson doors. I had french doors by Anderson installed in May. The french door has been leaking since installed when it rains. I have to towels by the door so the water does not damage anymore of my wood floors or when we get a lot of rain coming I seal the outside of the door with a large tarp with duck tape.
The screwed up my door, refused to do anything to fix it unless they voided my warranty! They then offered me $250 to hire someone to fix it (and then they would void my warranty) IF I signed amNon Disclosure Agreement. I told them to shove it up their [censored]. I just spent $50k on windows, and they want to buy my silence with $250. They SUCK, and they abuse consumers daily. Everything out of their salesmen’s mouths are lies. All of it.
Similar to our story. Butchered installation of entry and storm doors. Eventually gave us our money back but not before trying to void warranty on $35k of unrelated products, and trying to get us to sign a new agreement subject to a different state law, and trying to force us to sign a ridiculously broad gag order. Told them they are the ones damaging their own reputation!
I having problems with Renewal by Andersen windows. Their technician saw it and told me they screwed up. His manager and their insurance company denied the claims. Every contractor also remarked the window installation was bad I would love to find an attorney to sue them. An attorney willing to do this lawsuit on an contingency basis
If anyone has any information on a attorney please contact me at your earliest convenience

My comment is not on the windows or door that were replaced. My problem is that the crew was here in June of 2020. Stole my wife's silver coins and coin books handed down by her mother.
Unfortunately, the thief was not discovered until September 5, 2021. I filed a police report and insurance report. Since so much time had passed since the thief, there was really nothing that could be done. Needless to say there was disappointment and disgust on my part. I felt violated with what had transpired.
I even tipped the crew-on top of the $5, 000 to $6, 000 in coins that were taken.

My wife and I were approached by the con man / salesman who told us the 8 windows would cost us $32, 000. We live in a house that was built in 1954. We weren't looking for windows that would deflect a nuclear attack just something that would be better than the old wood framed windows that were originally installed. Needles to say we did not take their GENEROUS deal so we found another installer that a woman at our credit Union turned us on to and all 8 windows were replaced for $2800, imagine that! It still turns my blood cold every time I see one of their many ads come on over the television. They are a bunch of ripoffs and a bunch of crooks taking advantage of anyone who'll take the bait. SHAME ON THEM!
They just charged my 79 year old sister almost $7400 to replace 4 upstairs windows, 2 in each end of the house. I was livid when I heard that. Too late.
Windows leak air
Just to give some back ground here I live on some acreage in a 1 Story and half house. It is not uncommon to get 30 - 45 knot gust. At the time of installation my home was 12 years old. The previous windows were a Marvin builders grade which was starting to fail. We did our homework and went through numerous window replacement companies. RBA came out and did their sales pitch and we loved the windows. We bought 26 windows at a cost of $22K. We went with the Window inserts instead of the full replacements. With the installation process we were a little concerned when we saw the RBA team doing their work. The team was being very frugal with the foam. We raised concern that it gets very windy out here where we live and they need to be very plentiful with the foam. We were assured what they were doing would suffice the need for the installation. Throughout the summer the windows were good. The real problems are starting to now. With heavy gust (30-40 knots) the windows leak air, especially around the double hung windows. Which for our case we only got 2. We have several picture windows that are fixed. These windows leak air worse than our old windows. So we are going to see how good the warranty is for this company. From what we have seen from the replacement windows these have the best ratings over other competitions. From what I have read about the replacement windows it is all about installation. My wife and I are getting ready for a long haul battle. For this amount of money we SHOULD not be having these issues. I know for people this can be emotional, however I am pretty calm and always look at the facts.
After reading reviews of RBA windows experience, I too am close to filing a deceptive practice lawsuit. I had the same "hard sell" that I need to purchase the windows today before the price goes up. Unfortunately the salesperson convinced me that these were the best windows on the market. So I bought it. The problem is I live in a townhouse and the Board needs to approve the window selection. In the contract there is a place to check that says the windows will not be made until the HOA approves the windows, so I checked it. Needless to say, 2 weeks later I get a call from RBA to set up an installation day when the windows had not been approved by my HOA. So now, RBA refuses to refund the $7400 for the measurement and continues to state that I signed a contract. Talk about deceptive practice and a rip-off company! Signed: an unhappy consumer in Huntington Beach, CA.
I purchased 26 Renewal by Andersen windows June 2010 and boy am I sorry now. Paid over $23K. Most of the windows are casement and are working fairly well except where the windows were installed in the opening (leaks air), but the two worst offenders for air leaks that I have are the double hung windows. Once faces North the other South. These two double-hung were over $11oo a piece since the windows are 3.5x6.5. Right now I have 35+ MPH NW winds (as I write it is now 45+) and the window is howling with air pouring in... and I mean pouring in. These double hung windows are the worst I have ever had. My original old Marvin windows didn't leak air this BAD.
Andersen's solution is to insall a new window kit. They said this is a known problem with the windows where the air pours in around the block and channel of the windows, at the top of the frame, and not to mention under the sash. If it is known problem then why is Andersen adressing the issue up front?I have plastic up on the inside and it is bowing and is under strain. We are suppose to be to 4 degress tonight with the continual strong winds so my poor old furnance is going to get a costly workout.
I also have air leak around the edges of my large picture windows. Nothings about these windows is tight. The installation was not correct in my opinion and they have already been out several times for warranty work.
I would not recommend Renewal By Andersen Windows. Might as well go with WIndow World like my mom did as she has ZERO issues with her double hung windows. So I would not agress with the old saying you get what you pay for because this does not hold true with Andersen Windows. They are just costly without being effecient at keeping wind/heat/cold out which really is the whole purpose of a window right?!? Well see what happens with their recommended fix.
BTW - My Andersen Frenchwood Door is failing too. More air is coming in than with by old Pella Sliding Door. This door was recommended by Andersen to stop the straight direct West winds. Well it is not keeping the wind out! Air is coming in at the hinges, around all entry sides and all along the bottom. At least it doesn't let rain in like my sliding door.
After th 4th effort by RBA technicians to stop the flow of cold air resulted in the windows no longer being able to be opened I also am looking into litigation concerning deceptive sales practices. That process in retrospect was a full court presss of deception and outright lies, most notably during a visit to the RBA showroom where, fortunately, I had company - a witness. We were told - as she put her hand to the window - that there would be no difference in temperature at the window from the room itself. After consecutive sub zero nights I measured nearly twenty degrees difference.
Here's my blog that details my ordeal:

I've filed a complaint with the Kansas Attorney general.

To follow up to my last post, I have filed a complaint with the Kansas Attorney Generals office, http://www.ksag.org/page/file-a-consumer-complaint. I encourage you to do the same. The Southard rep told me that "all windows leak air". I think that they should disclose this before you sign the contract, don't you?
I have the EXACT same problem with the 200 series windows I had installed in new construction this summer. The installation was done correctly and the window frames are square, however the sashes do not have a good fit. In the recent blizzard we had snow coming in where the two sashes meet on either side. I bought these windows for the Anderson name and will be filing a complaint. If there is a class action suit I want in on it. They've been out for "warranty work" multiple times. The fit and finish is horrible.
I am considering a lawsuit against RBA-looks like there may be enough people in Kansas dissatisfied with RBA that a class action suite may be possible.
If you haven't yet resolved your problems (and I suspect you haven't, based on my experiences with RBA), I am considering a lawsuit against RBA for deceptive sales practices and inferior product (my windows leak air too). Maybe there will be the possibility of a class action suit, just by the comments I have read on the internet.
I too have this problem. I purchased $200 worth
of andersen original weather stripping and it is not
worth a dime. The air blows in and you can feel the frosty
snow entering the room.
Nice work andersen!
Negative initial impression
This is more of a whinge than a complaint. I've been contacting window replacement companies in our area to get quotes on a job. When i got in touch with rba, i was told that both 'decision makers' must be present for the presentation in order to qualify for a discount. What is this, 1956? Even after confirming that i was well educated, intelligent and owner of a company accustomed to making 'decisions' i was still given the brush - off by this bozo. Rba will not be getting any business from me now or in the future. They must be doing very well in this economy to ignore potential customers.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
They want both homeowners there so when it comes down to price
you cannot use the excuse I have to talk to my Husband/Wife!
This is a waste of time in the industry and considered A one leg Appointment!
Renewal wants both decision makers present in order to avoid the
excuse of having to speak to the spouse and when both are there
the "CLOSERS" can hammer the homeowners to BUY on the SPOT!
The old dog and pony show begins when the Price is presented and is way way over the REAL COST and then the
game of dropping the price and calling my manager and blah blah blah!
BUYER BEWARE!
