Resolved Havertys - Terrible Company

I purchased 2 recliner chairs from this store almost 8 Months ago (beginning of December 2009). The total...

Resolved poor quality recliner

My husband and I bought a leather sofa and recliner a year ago at Havertys. The furniture is made (I found out later) by Leathermart, we paid $1000 for each piece, wanted a nice set now that the kids have gone to college.
The springs under the recliner have been popping off one by one and we cannot use the chair. Of course it is just out of manufacturers warranty so I was given a number for a "Furniture Medic" in our area apparently that will come and look at it and see if they can fix it. If they can get the parts needed from the manufacturer we will only have to pay for the labor for the repair, no idea how much that will be.
My complaint is that for the price we paid at Havertys we expected to get quality furniture which is not the case. I always thought the name stood for quality and felt fortunate I could shop there but after spending that much on a small leather chair and now haveing to pay to get it fixed I don't feel so fortunate. Havertys hasn't really been any help, could have already called a furniture repair company and not waited for the runaround from them. We thought they might want to know what they were selling out of their store under their name but they don't seem to care.

Same thing happened to me. Bought a recliner at Haverty's in Knoxville, TN. We bought the five year extened warranty and recliner
tore up the month after five years expired. Haverty's gave me the number for Furniture medix bu they never returned my call.
I called Leathermart in San Diego, but only got a busy signal all day. What a rip off. This chair cost us $1399 plus tax. Haverty's will not get any more of my business

Resolved Financing Scam Artists

I paid for a couch and chair on a zero interest plan for a year. I paid off my bill in installments to Citifinancial who handled the financing for Haverty's and I paid the final bill in the twelth month (I had only 150.00 left to pay). I ask them to cancel my card, instead I got another bill for 174.00 for "finance charges." Outrageous!

These people are scam artists. DO NOT FINANCE WITH HAVERTY'S!

Twelve months interest-free means twelve months, not thirteen. You have to pay it off in the eleventh month, before the twelve month period is over.

Resolved Poor quality furniture and unresolved issues

I ordered office furniture from Haverty's one month ago. Had furniture delivered and it needed repairs. Scheduled a service call. They came out and couldn't fix the furniture. Had the file cabinet replaced. The books cases now needed repair. Called for another visit. They came out and within 5 minutes said he could not repair it alone and needed another guy to help. Once again scheduled another service. Both repairmen came out and once again could not fix the furniture. Now will have to have the middle bookcase replaced and another delivery date set up. Five visits later, the furniture is still not correct. Customer Service supervisors are worthless. I will never buy furniture from them again and will be reporting them to the BBB. I'm sure they won't compensate me for the inconvenience they are causing me and my office. I will have taken 6 vacation days out of my schedule to accommodate their poor customer service. When I buy so call "quality" furniture, I expect it to be perfect upon delivery. I will be telling friends and family to not buy from them.

Thats the Havertys way. They sell sub-standard Chinese made products. Most of the "solid-wood" stuff is solid particle-board with a veneer, top and bottom to hide the fact.
You break a chair-bottom in half, that on the outside, including the bottom, looks solid, it is not!!! A lot of the high-dollar dining table legs, wood?? Nope, hollow-resin cast, aka plastic. All the pretty "carvings" on Ent.centers, plastic...The company is run by a bunch of ego-manics, old-schoolers that are running the company in the ground. Old man Haverty would flip in his grave if he could see what was going on.

Resolved Fraud and cheating

I purchased a lift chair for my father in April. It was not delivered until May. On September 12, the chair quit working with my father in a reclining position. (He's 84) Since then we can not get the chair fixed. Oh, we paid for the Golden Plan, but was told with a lift chair it would be repaired in 3 days if anything happened. Well today is October 15, and the chair still hasn't been fixed. My dad can not get up and down. He has been to the doctor twice to get medicine for his knees since this started. DON'T BUY Haverty's!!!

Again people, READ! Havertys did not make the merchandise. They are a distributor and are same as you, bounded by vendor's warranty and procedures. I find it really funny when people complain without really understanding how this works. I am not sure if this is just a brain fart or plain ignorance by choice. When you buy a furniture, ask first, who the original vendor is, what is the warranty. I did not have any idea what Golden plan is until lately. It is a warranty againts Customer damage only for 5 yrs, not against vendor defects!!! Obviously, you are ignorant by choice.

Resolved Terrible company

If you ever wondered why Havertys does not "haggle" prices... let me inform you as to why. The company has lost a lot of money recently and instead of reducing prices to help the consumer, they have raised them to make up for loses. Havertys will not lower any price regardless if you buy a house full or pay cash. Let me show you how much Havertys has lost...

Havertys loses $2.3 million.

By XXXXXXX -- Furniture Today, August 11, 2008.

ATLANTA — Havertys reported a second-quarter net loss of $2.3 million and said that with no end in sight to “brutal” business conditions, its focus is on controlling costs and preserving cash.

The loss for the period ended June 30 compared with a net loss of $1.4 million for the same period a year ago. For the first six months, the Top 100 company posted a $1.3 million loss, compared with a $520, 000 loss a year ago.

As previously reported, net sales for the quarter decreased 10% to $168.4 million and same-stores said fell 12.7%. The company, with 124 stores in 17 Southern and Midwestern states, also announced that its July sales were $62.9 million, down 7.3% from the same month last year, as same-store sales decreased 10%. The company also announced that it will no longer release monthly sales figures.

Through the first seven months, sales declined 6.6% to $416.5 million and same-store sales decreased 9.5%.

“The current economic conditions, which have had a brutal impact on the residential furniture industry, show few signs of abating in the near term, ” said President and CEO Clarence Smith. “Our focus is on cost containment and maintaining our strong balance sheet while enhancing our competitive positions in the markets we serve.”

Smith said gross margin in the second quarter improved to 51.2% from 48.6%, reflecting “our continuing commitment to closely managing our inventories” and the decision to shift more of the customers on long-term financing plans to third-party lenders.

Smith said selling, general and administrative expenses were mostly lower, but the reductions were partly offset by increases in delivery fuel costs and third-party credit expense.

In a conference call with the investment community, Smith noted several cost-cutting initiatives under way, including the use of new Web conferencing technology to cut travel and training costs; adjusting distribution and delivery schedules and staffing; revising its outsourced credit programs, moving to “more cost effective” promotions; adjusting advertising by market; and reviewing real estate leases for possible rent reductions.

He added that the company has cut its store growth plans and that its $7 million in capital expenditures related to stores are for projects that were initiated in prior periods and normal store maintenance. Planned capital expenditures during 2008 for distribution and information technology are $5.7 million.

I will NEVER shop for anything at Mobile, AL. Havertys Furniture again. You call and it takes forever to reach a real individual. I went into the store with questions concerning two mattress sales and they could not answer my questions. All the sales help could say is 'it is new to our store, we have had it for 4 months. " You can do much better by ordering on the Internet at reputable business's. At least they can answer your questions.

Resolved Awful company

We bought a Vera Wang mattress set along with $10, 000 of other items from Havertys. Within 5 weeks the mattress was sagging heavily in the center. Their mattress "technician" showed up and said that he could see the sag. Then he whipped out a string with a weight on the end and threw it across the bed. Unfortunately the string wasn't long enough to reach across the bed but he did his assessment anyway. He said our problem was a "comfort problem" and nothing was wrong with the mattress. He also said we should have been rotating the mattress. For gosh sakes, the mattress is 5 weeks old! If it is sagging in the center and you rotate it isn't the center still in the center? At this time we are waiting to here from a supervisor. Hopefully he'll be more reasonable. We have been so far.

We financed $2500 dollars through Haverty's Furniture in one of those 2 year "same as cash" deals. We never received an invoice. However, we kept good notes and knew when the amount was to come due, who the players were, and so forth. A month before the due date of our payment, we started our attempts to contact the credit company and Haverty's. No one could find our account. The sales person at Haverty's suggested we just "forget it." No way, we thought.

After several phone calls, trips to the Haverty's store, and several letters, someone finally "found" our account. And, they subsequently took our money. Guess what? A few weeks letter we received a letter with our original $2500 account balance, late charges and two years worth of financing charges? And with a smile, we produced our receipt.

Please also see our post about the poor quality of our Haverty's furniture.

We too purchased a Vera Wang mattress that was latex and it sagged almost immediately. We were told the whole rotating spiel as well and fortunately were able to return it after it became miserable to sleep on. They are very poor quality and we had heard that they are returned frequently. We then purchased a Tempurpedic which is the best night sleep ever. Good luck.

Since my last entry, I have received 419 more emails from people that I have helped and 186 new emails from those wanting assistance with locating furniture at 1/3 or lower the price of Havertys. The total amount of people contacting me about their savings was over 1, 000. The savings by consumers was far below the amount I originally predicted. Just by the numbers presented to me by those choosing not to purchase from Havertys, those consumers saved on average of $3, 500.00. Lets do the correct math. We will use a low number also to reflect those from the 186 email bracket. If 700 people saved on average $2, 000.00, Havertys lost a minimum of $1, 400, 000.00. That savings was passed directly to those consumers choosing to believe they could get a better deal for the same product elsewhere. The day will come when Havertys will have to take this matter seriously and be prepared to be judged not just on their ridiculously high prices but the lies concerning quality, protection plans and foolish delivery charges. I challenge everyone to think before you buy. Why pay more for the same product just because it came from Havertys. You can save thousands of dollars. So if you are interested in a product from Havertys, email me at enoch 17 @ wmconnect.com with the name of the item and I will tell you who makes it, where to locate a dealer in your area to purchase from and what you really should pay for the item.

Stol, You rock!!! Telling the truth is what needs to be done here. The employee moral at Havertys is as low as a snails-belly, why?? No raises for three-plus years, and then they have the audicity to spend 250k for stupid "Have" banners for the sides of semi-trailers and install them right in front of the employees!!!
No wonder so much stuff comes out of the warehouses torn-up, who cares???? If I was a prep-guy I sure would'nt.
Then it's "Employee Appreciation Day" hahahahah what a joke. They feed you a burnt hot-dog or hamburger and expect your attitude to suddenly change.

I have bought furnitures from Havertys and they always do good with their warranty. My advise is, READ YOUR WARRANTY when you buy a furniture from any company. The papers they gave you from the beginning specified in the warranty forms how a technician would inspect your mattress . This is standard measurement for most, if not all of the bedding vendors. Why would you hold Havertys accountable for
being ignorant. They did not make the bed. They are one of the distributors. So please, do not insult other people's intelligence by your complains. Learn to read and understand what you are reading.

Resolved Hidden delivery fees 17% of purchase price

Do not shop at the Palm Harbor, FL store. The Manager is a rude, boor who bullies his personnel and customers. He could not be bothered to come out of his office regarding his insistence of charging $120 to deliver a sofa bed that we wished to have a professional p/u for us from the store. He said it was at his discretion whether to waive the hidden, mandatory fee. The fee is not printed anywhere on any materials. The purchase price of the item is $749 -- he essentially insists on 17% more money to sell the item to us. If this is how Havertys does business, they do not have stores, but rather, distribution points. The BBB will be on our list to inform of these unscrupulous, hidden fees which are at the discretion of a manager to apply or waive. Horrible management! Horrible store!

There is no such thing as a 17% delivery fee; if you choose to pick up you furniture you willnot get charge delivery. it might be if you bought a special order item and you wanted to return it for a full refund you will be asked to pay a 15% restoking fee. other than that if its a normal order you will refunded 100% of your payment

I spent over an hour with a very good sales associate looking at recliners, after deciding on a recliner I was in the process of paying for the furniture, when I was told that the delivery charge would be $100.00. This completely changed my mind. I am a senior citizen and find that when a delivery charge is greater than 10% of the purchase price that it is unreasonable. Now if you research recliners, you soon realize that all or most furniture stores are carrying recliners by the same manufacturers. They are clearly all about the same. I decided not to purchase from Haverty's, and purchased almost an Identical recliner for $50.00 less from your competitor. There delivery price was $50.00. This was about 6.2% of the cost of the recliner. As a senior I cannot move this furniture or pickup this furniture at the store, so I decided to shop around. I felt bad for the sales associate, but I got the impression he did not have the discretion to reduce the delivery fee. I do have to purchase an additional chair, but it will not be from Haverty's.

Resolved New table from Haverty's looks years old after two weeks

I purchased the Balboa table from Haverty's and after two weeks the table begin to chip, and scratches begin to appear. If you write on a piece of paper the writing goes through the paper and comes out on the table in the form of a scratch. This table is not for daily use and Haverty's should have informed me of this. I asked for a table to use daily, now I'm stuck with a table that I can't use. All its good for is to look at. It would be worse if I had kids.

I too ordered the Balboa set (bedroom set) and the finish is awful. Anything you put on it leaves a mark. Customer service is coming out this weekend to inspect, however they informed me the damage may not be covered. I have had the furniture about four months. Would NOT recommend this furniture to anyone.

I would like to respectfully suggest that this person has unrealistic expectations of wood furniture - any pretty finish can be easily scratched. If u want an indestructible surface do not choose wood. It's actually instyle now: "Distressed" wood finishes which looked "used" and therefore will not show NEW scratches and look like they are beloved heirlooms.

Resolved Poor quality

My husband and I purchased a living room set from Haverty's in March. When the furniture was delivered on March 21st, it looked as though whoever scotch guarded the fabric sat the cans and their big butt on the furniture before it was dry. We had distinct circles on the ottoman and big smudges on the cushions that should not have been there and would not go away no matter what.

We had a rep from Haverty's come to our house who agreed that the upholstery was messed up and could not be repaired, but that they would be happy to replace everything for us.

We have waited and waited, only to be put off with different delivery dates every time we called. Then three weeks ago we were told the furniture had been discontinued and we would have to pick out something else.

Now, we had already painted for this furniture, bought drapes, and even had new kitchen countertops installed that would compliment the colours of the furniture since you can see our countertops from the living room, and now we have to start over!

Then two weeks ago we got a phone call from our salesperson telling us our discontinued couch, chair, and ottoman were in the warehouse awaiting delivery in one week. Great! Our salesperson told us she would personally inspect each piece before it was brought out to make sure we were not going to be disappointed again. Right.

When the truck got to our house, the driver told us the furniture comes from Atlanta and never gets near the store, so there was no way she could have inspected it for us. Also, it was so shrink wrapped that no one could have inspected anything.

My husband and I climbed up into the back of the truck and started to unwrap this furniture (no sense in taking it off the truck only to have to put it back on if not perfect) only to find mess similar to what we already had. The driver told us he has delivered many couches with this type of fabric but had never seen one such a mess like this.

So, now that set went back to Haverty's as did the first set, so now we have no furniture in our living room except for an end table and two lamps. Lovely!

Haverty's have offered us 20% off on whatever we pick to replace the Donaway Sofa set we had to send back, but we are not hesitant to do business with them.

And we are extremely disappointed with our salesperson. She was great as long as she was making money from us. We haven't heard a word from her since the furniture was sent back a week ago. Very frustrating experience!

I did my research around what you stated. Who buys a 6 or 7 hundred dollar sofa and massively redecorates around that. Talk about putting the horse infront of the cart. Counter tops! Window Treatments! I also found they have a 3 day policy. If you dont like it you can return it. I think you were in to much of a hurry and couldnt wait to get something. You cant be mad at the company. It sounds like they have done everyhting they could to make you happy.

So, how much does Haverty's pay you to read these complaints and post replys?
Some people do redecorate around a whole scheme, and Havery's does have poor quality merchandise which is their problem and the customer's apparently because they are buying poor quality merchandise but theire prices are certainly top of the line!

High prices from employees point of view

Let me start off by saying that no one should ever shop at Haverty's and here are reasons why.

1: Furniture markup--- Haverty's furniture is so tremendously marked up far more than any other furniture store. Take a piece that costs $999.00 in the store, Haverty's cost only $299.00. A piece selling for $1, 999.oo, again Haverty's cost is $599.00.

2: Quality of product--- Haverty's product is not the best by comparison. I have seen so many returns because of the unit falling apart or just being delivered damaged.

3: Delivery cost--- Haverty's has raised their delivery charge from $49.95 to $199.99-$699.99. Haverty's just raised 60% of their product to cover high fuel costs and now they want you to pay another price to have your product delivered. You DO NOT have to pay this charge. If anyone pays this, then shame on you.

4: Protection plan (Gold-in Home)--- This "protection" for your furniture is a big joke. Salespeople are given free rang to lie about what this worthless plan covers. Salespeople get paid at least 25% of what you spend for this. The price can range from $199.00-$699.00. If you buy this plan, you might as well kiss your money goodbye. NEVER buy this. It does NOT work.

5: "NO-Haggle policy"--- Haverty's has started this no-haggle policy meaning that they will not discuss price with you. They believe and want you to pay what they say. Haverty's may tell you that their product is a Haverty's brand also. All of this is bull. Haverty's makes none of their product. You can buy 80%-90% of their product from another company at 1/2 the price of Haverty's. Just ask who makes the item and shop around. If they say that it is a Haverty's brand, laugh and walk away. They want you to believe this junk.

I should know, I worked for Havertys for over two years. I know all there is to know about this company.

1: Furniture markup--- Haverty's furniture is so tremendously marked up far more than any other furniture store. Take a piece that costs $999.00 in the store, Haverty's cost only $249.00. A piece selling for $1, 999.oo, again Haverty's cost is $599.00. A King Tempur-pedic Mattress that sells for $3, 199, Haverty's paid only $1, 299.00. You can buy 80%-90% of their product from another store if you know who makes it and all you have to do is just ask. They may give you the bull that it is a Haverty brand (Haverty's does not make any of their product).

2: Protection plan--- This is called "Gold-in Home". Each salesperson is pressured to sell you this bogus plan and instructed to lie about what it does and how it works. This plan can cost you up to $699.00 and it does not do what it claims. Each salesperson can make up to 25% of the total cost if you purchase this worthless plan. If you buy this, kiss your money good-bye.

3: Delivery cost--- Haverty's has raised their delivery charge from $49.95 to $199.99-$699.99. If anyone pays this, then shame on you.

4: "No-Haggle" policy--- Haverty's has started a no-haggle policy meaning that the company is not going to lower their prices for anyone at anytime. Haverty's will tell you that you cannot buy their product anywhere else so you must pay what they are asking. This is bull. If you firmly ask who makes their product and get a company name, you can find the same item somewhere else at a fraction of Haverty's costs. If they claim that it is a "Haverty's" collection, be aware that Haverty's does NOT make any of their products. It is all made by other companies. You DO NOT have to pay what they are asking.

How do I know these things---- I am a former employee. If anyone has any questions then just email me @ [email protected] for full details on anything concerning Haverty's. Email me before you buy and I will save you time and money.

Old Enoch has had a little trouble with the law it seems. I am guessing he is a very reliable source on how companies operate. So Enoch, are you just stealing credit card numbers? Are you solociting to get us all better prices so you can steal from us too?

I know there is a cost for Tempurpedic that is sold everywhere for the same price, but the retailer price is dead accurate at what you quote. People need to realize that that this company <Havertys> is ripping people off with their high mark-up. I am glad someone had the courage to speak up against this. I also see that you have a reference about the Manager at the Florence, SC (Tony Scott) location on another site. I have heard about this from many sources and I believe this Manager needs to be fired for harassing the female employees as well.

I tried to negotiate a discount on a home office collection sold by Haverty's. The Chateau de Vin collection is manufactured by Aspenhome and is modular in construction ... you can mix and match different components.

Haverty's quoted me $5, 000 for the set of components I was interested in. I asked for a 20% discount because I know the margin in the furniture industry are high. I was immediately told that Haverty's has a "no haggle" policy and they could not adjust the price.

I contacted Aspen Home and requested other retailers in the Dallas area that sold their merchandise. I was referred to Weirs and Charter Furniture. Weirs for similiar components (slight differences) quoted me approx $3, 300. Charter Furniture for the same components (from what I could tell) quoted me $3, 000.

I contacted my sales person at Haverty's and alerted her to the price discrepancy. The "Asset Manager" at Haverty's returned my email, and informed me that the Aspen Home furniture that Haverty's carried had "added features" from Weirs which accounted for the difference in pricing. I am an amateur woodworker, so I was interested in what the added feature were ... I went back to Haverty and thoroughly looked over the furniture at Haverty's and could not note any "added features" other than pull out lighting on the hutches (certainly not worth an incremental $2, 000 in my opinion). From what I could tell, the furniture was identical (other than the pull out lighting) to the furniture at Charter and Weirs.

I asked for a complete list of added features that would account for the increased price ... as of yet, no response from Haverty's.

This just proves ... Caveat Emptor

Resolved Poor customer service

I moved into an apartment while waiting for my home to be built. I bought a sofa & recliner with the expressed intent of going back to get the love seat when the house was complete. I told the sales person my plan and asked her to call me if they discontinued or put on clearance the set I had chosen. When I went back the set was gone. I had been in several times and bought other items from the same lady. Now I have a sofa and recliner ($3000) without the loveseat. They gave me cryptic information on finding the loveseat elsewhere, not enough to actually go on. I spent about $5000 in that store in less than a year, all from the same lady. I believe customer service could have been better!

That has nothing to do with Havertys customer service, that was your fault, the world dont revolve around you, you could of special order the love seat.

Resolved Uncomfortable Bed

We bought a Sealy Posturpedic king size bed set from Haverty's and were told that there is a warranty. Before a year was up, the bed had a 1 inch sag. Haverty's sent out people to look at it. They said they couldn't warranty the bed until the sag was an inch and a half and that 1 1/2 inches is the industry standard for replacement. We have had to go to the chiropractor to solve our back aches from this bed yet we can't get any replacement from the company. I tried to go directly to Sealy but their website refers customers back to the retailer. We ended up getting an air bed online for $150 to replace the $1, 100 mattress and have solved our back problems. There is a problem if the mattress cannot hold up for one year and pit out under a 125 pound woman.

Resolved Thief and liar

You all have some one that work for that company that lies and steals and do drugs. On a daily basis, will not take responsibilities for their own actions, no matter what they do, they beg, they steal, and lie! On a daily basis. That individual needs to be drug tested, as soon as possible. I am a concerned consumer as well as a paying customer. How can Haverty's Furniture Store can have someone that works in your company that would steal and lie and beg customers for tips? Because they deliver furniture. To the paying customer...they should be FIRED!!!

Let me start off by saying that no one should ever shop at Haverty's and here are reasons why.

1: Furniture markup--- Haverty's furniture is so tremedously marked up far more than any other furniture store.

If anyone pays this, then shame on you.

How do I know these things---- I am a former employee. If anyone has any questions then just email me @ enoch17 AT wmconnect.com for full details on anything concerning Haverty's.

Would you really know every employees actions? If you really are a concern consumer and a paying Havertys customer, report it to the management. Be proactive not just a bystander baby.

Haverty's commercials are getting more stupid by the day. The redheaded couple in their commercials just don't have a clue. They advertise that you can design your own furniture at Haverty's. Wrong! You can only choose between what they already have in their inventory, and change the color of the pillows or sofa covering, if already available. I took my design to Haverty's to have them manufacture my design. They said they do not custom manufacture furniture. False advertising, and they should be sued. And as already stated, the mark-up is outrageous, and the quality poor.

I wouldn't buy from them either. When my hubby and I went shopping for a new sofa there a few months back, they were having a sale. We looked around and settled on a sofa we both liked. The saleslady said, "Oh, that comes in lots of fabrics, you can choose a different fabric if you want!" So we sat there for twenty more minutes picking out the fabric we wanted. Then we found her again and said to her, "We've chosen (whatever the fabric was called.)" Then she disappeared for about five minutes, came back and announced to us, "That fabric is going to cost you another $300.00." There was no signage to that effect. We looked at each other, laughed at her and left without another word. So, she couldn't have told us that before wasting our time? That negated the sales price, and she was deceptive. Haverty's is sneaky, and we wouldn't go back.
