Fifth Third Bank / 53.com predatory fees, banking practices, and horrible customer service

After this being the SECOND time that this ridiculously absurd bank has given me and my partner the run around about our account, I felt it was due time to come and complain. First and foremost, Fifth Third Bank is a predatory fee bank. Jacob and I switched from Lafayette Savings Bank to Fifth Third Bank about a year ago when we moved to Indianapolis. No idea why, but we did.

Long story short. We overdrafted our account by 45 cents and were charged $148 in overdraft fees due to "Pending Transactions." I sat on the phone with Customer Service for a decade and a half with some ignorant SOB named Michelle who decided to treat me like a four year old and explain "finger painting by Fifth Third."

Well let me tell you something, I don't appreciate being spoken to like a four year old, number one and number two, they call other banks loan sharks (like American General Finance). HAH! Excuse me, but that's almost 35000% interest on $0.45.

Just watch out. These people are horrible and don't help worth a damn.

My wife and I have a simular problem with them now. Our account was overdrafted by $0.19 and by the time we recieved notice it had grown to $219! We went into the bank to discuss it with them and were told that they had called us and sent letters to our address. However, when they went to show us the letters (plural) that they keep copies of, we were told by the person in charge that they had fogotten to make copies of the letters those days. The account was closed due to us not contacting them about paying the overdraft the day before we visited conviently enough and were also told that we must pay the fee's and then they would decide IF we could open another account with them. So, I will dispute the charges they sent (after two days) to collections and now have activiated an old family account instead.

I called the band in fair haven michigan where I have had an account for 18 years plus a mortgage (2) and all they would take off was 100.00. Not only that...When I Hung Up...I looked at my account and they closed it the next day.

53 third bank has charged me overdraft fees on items that appear as cleared on one day then they appear a few days later when funds have gone down as overdraft. then they charged me a return fee on the same item, so I'm being charged twice on one item.

I contacted the branch manager who said to me that theses were legit charges and there was nothing he could do about it. this has been going on for over a month and I have lost over $600.00 during that time. We have finally decided to close our account. BEWARRREEEEE!

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com overdraft fees

1. On 9/05/08 I had balance of 85.34 in checking account (pretty low i know does not happen often)

2. on 9/06/08 I deposited a check in the amount of 551.99 (I was aware that only 100.00 would be available immediatley giving me a balance of 185.34)

3. on 9/09/08 when I checked my balance in the morning because I knew I cut it close and had some debits pending from my check card, my available balance was 449.73 however I noticed an overdraft alert (I clicked on the alert however system told me data was not available yet please check later)

4. Now here is where it starts getting great -- a bogus "internet check" was cleared thru my account putting me overdrawn on my account. I did the math since everything was listed and my last 2 debits from my check card from Starbucks put me over my limit. So now theoretically these 2.00 cups of coffee I had purchased 4 days ago with my check card are now going to cost me 39.00 each (2.00 + 37.00 overdraft for each cup of coffee). Well I was upset but knew hands down the internet check was bogus and did not see any reason I would not win the dispute.
A. Internet check had invalid routing number (I went online and checked with CHECKCOMPOSER.COM and routing number does not exist (ended up it was old routing number from old bank before it was bought out by 5th third bank probably close to 10 years ago))
B. Check number was not even remotely close to my current check numbers.
C. Name on check was mine however address was Hendon Road in Hartford CT. I have never been to conneticut and Hendon Road does not exist in Hartford CT. (I called the police in Hartford and confirmed this was a bogus address).

5. It gets better -- So now I go to that Starbucks place and purchase coffee and a breakfast sandwich and put it on my dreaded check card (remember I just checked my available balance and it was 449.73) thus I new I had plenty to cover this purchase. Then went to the bank filled out 5 page form to dispute charge and went to work. Well the next day went back online to check on my accout out of curiosity and also look at my overdraft notice and behold this 74.00 overdraft was now 148.00! The ### took my 5.18 purchase that I had made the previous morning for my coffee and sandwich added it to my debits which had already posted and now instead of my last to debits being overlimit my last four debits were overlimit so they could tack on another 74.00! One last note -- My overdraft notice is dated 9/09/08 however this 5.18 they added to the overdraft did not even post to my account until the morning of 9/11/08 It's unbelievable

To date it's going on for close to 5 weeks. I've had to close my old checking account, open a new one, I am still waiting for new checks to be delivered to me (3x i've requested new checks still not have received them) and have had to contact credit card company, cable company, health insurace company etc. All of which I explained that I had to close my account open new account and the # only gave me 6 checks to hold me over until they get new checks to me. I've had to do some online banking to pay some of these bills until I get my checks. 148.00 is not going to break me however it is a matter of principle — I will get my money and run

After reading your complaint. You are playing the floating game. I am not affiliated with 5/3 other then being a customer. Of course they have fees, they are in business to MAKE money. You "assumed" that the money would be available and ready for use. You spent before you had. So, slamming a bank for unfair business ethics, let's look at you first. By the statement "I normally, don't have such a low balance." I say BS. You float between each check hoping not to get caught by your short curlies. You got nailed, and it cost you. Teach you a little tip. Bump your account by 100.00 and forget it's there. Then you will have the finances available. Remember, you are the one making the banks rich, not them "ripping" you off. Why do I know? Because I once did the same thing.. Blamed the world, these fees wouldn't exists if people banked with ethics. When ethics left, the fees started piling up. My parents had a min. balance between 500-1000. I never EVER heard them complain about their bank

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com overdrafts with positive balance

On 10/03/08 I depostied a Government check for $ 336.00 into my checking acct. that had a balance of $ 429.74 for what I thought was a balance of $ 765.74 . I then went to the grocery and other shopping . On the same day two (2) checks came in . The total value of ALL spending AND checks came to $ 541.52 ( $50 of that was pending and was paid out on 10/06 ). I was charged $74.00 for two (2) overdrafts ! ONE OVERDRAFT OF $ 37 for a $ 25 check and another $ 37 on a $ 4.55 debit purchase. THATS RIGHT ! $ 74.00 in fees for two items totaling $ 29.55 ! ALL THIS WHEN I HAD $ 765.74 IN THEIR STINKING BANK ! It was then explained to me that I could ONLY USE the first $ 100 of my deposit ? !?!?! I then called them up and got a very rude supervisor named Scott # 1986298 who said it was my fault and I should have known this as it had been in effect since 07 . Nobody told me until this happened . Now I see what I could have done in hindsight ... CASH THE CHECK and then DEPOSIT THE CASH BACK INTO MY ACCOUNT to have the full usable balance . This only works up to the balance you have on hand to cover the check, but in my case I could have deposited it all in cash . 5/3 BANK is a rip off organization and my wife and myself will take our $ 5000.00 a month that gos through 5/3 and take it to National City . oh, by the way, Scott # 1986298, when I mentioned that I was a loyal customer since 1998 and had for ten (10) years had "totally free checking " said " that's just a name " . When I asked for the phone number for Corporate and/or the address for corporate, REFUSED on both requests and said that HE WAS IT ! NO ONE ELSE TO TALK TO ! E.S.Manley

I also was ripped-off with 5/3 overdrafts. I had deposited 477.00 into my checking account the day that my deposit posted to my account which did have a balance prior to the deposit, they charged my 165.00 in overdraft fees the same day. Nobody works with you when you call, take your money elsewhere- I did.

Same things happened to me and my family. We had an overdraft of $25.00 roughly and they ended up taking our ENTIRE paychecks after we deposited them. WE didn't know either that we were overdrawn as when I checked our account we had a positive balance of nearly $100.00. So, we lost over $500.00 of our paycheck to cover OD fees on an account that showed positive. I called the bank and the man had me so confused about debits/credits/deposits that i didn't know what to do. I took our next paycheck, cashed it and worked on a cash basis for about 2 weeks...after writing no checks, using no debit cards and using only cash...I checked our account and we were nearly $500 overdrawn! I called and asked HOW since we had not been using anything...I was told by the very rude bank manager that we had 2 transactions go through at the begining of that two weeks, and the fees are charged each day as a NEW Overdraft! Crooked. He wouldn't let me close our account to stop the charges so that I could get everything caught up...he said they would reduce the fee to $8.00 per day. So...I opened a checking account at another bank...and filed a formal complaint with 5/3, the BBB and contacted our local troubleshooter who told me I was not the first to complain about this bank. I've finally convinved serveral of our friends to switch banks too. Theives with a disclosure statement is what they are!

I agree, 5/3 bank is a ripoff. I too have an account with them, both checking and savings. They have stolen so far about $723 from us, this includes the savings money we had in our savings account. When we first set up our account we asked that our savings account be connected to our checking account to cover OD fees. When we got charged for OD fees for having a positive balance, shown on their printouts, they never took the money out of our Savings account to cover it. Not like they should of anyway as we were never in the whole to begin with...but anyway...when this happened on Jan. 25, 2010 we didn't receive the OD notice in the mail until Feb. 2, 2010 by this time we had over draft fees of 503.00. When we went in to correct this MISS-UNDERSTANDING the bank told us that they never had the Savings account connected to our Checking, so they fixed that for us and connected the two accounts. Well then that took all the money we had from our savings for over draft fees before we could fix the account, as the account was in the whole. So now our savings account is gone. This still did not get us up to a positive number. The next day when we went in to fix this problem, more OD fees were being charged to us. So now we are up to $603 in OD fees, and our Savings of $120 gone. And the bank claims they can only refund us $333 as this was their mistake. HUH! Our Savings is gone and they stole from us and they can't give the money back to us? On top of this we have been with them for two months now, and not once have we received a bank statement. The bank told me to go online and keep track of our account. WHAT! Then when we asked them why on the banks printout it shows us in the positive on the 25 but the bank takes out 125 in OD fees... They couldn't explain that. On the OD Notice that we finally received in the mail a week and a half later... it shows two charges coming out on the 25th of Jan. which according to the bank Over Drew our account. Yet on the print out of our account. It shows the two charges coming out on the 26th of Jan. I'm a very unhappy customer, I now have no clue how much money is in my account and am afraid to write anymore checks or use my debit card. How many more OD Fees are they going to charge me?

I truly wish a Lawyer would take this case... We are being ripped off big time. And we can't do anything about it.

I have been charged a total of $255 in overdrafts charges in the last week for an overdraft that was only $15 over what I had in the bank. I have filed a formal complaint with Fifth Third and with the better business bureau. They are losing money due to the economy so they are steeling from their customers to stay afloat...they will go under in no time because they are going to lose customer real fast this way.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com rip off

I have read reports submitted against Fifth Third Bank Corp in regards to their methods of creative transaction alterations to unfairly create debits against member's accounts... I AGREE 100% and feel there should be a Class Action Lawsuit against Fifth Third Bank Corp.

Personal Incidents-

1. Fifth Third has withheld debit transactions for extended periods of time then strategically batch posted them while delaying deposits to overdraw the account. They then proceeded to initiate overdraft frees per line item.

2. Direct Deposit- Payroll Direct Deposit is to be posted and available for transaction the day of the posting. On Aug.30, over $4, 000 from payroll was direct deposited into my account. On that day, resulting from their creative transaction management methods, one of their batch postings of debits took the account negative and was overdrawn by approx. $200. Fifth Third did not credit my account of the direct deposit payroll. As oppose to crediting the account, they placed the funds that should be available from my direct deposit on hold.

It forced me to visit the branch office on Saturday morning to discuss the issues. I was told by the acting lead officer that the reason for the direct deposit being place on hold was because she personally placed the account on hold because of the overdrawn status several days earlier. During that discussion with her, I later understood, thru her own admission, that if I hadn't physically visited the office to resolve the issue, my account would still have been on hold status with no funds available.

I then asked a simple question and attained an answer that clearly points to Fifth Third Bank Corp. practicing unethical transactions at the cost of their members: My question was, 'when an account is place on hold, is it done manually, as in by a person and not systematically'; her response was 'yes'. I then asked, when an account is overdrawn, are overdraft fees debited from account thru automation, as in automatic thru their so called 'robust' system, her answer was 'yes'.

Finally my ending question to her and my point- In this day of technological marvels, why and how, from an ethical standpoint, can Fifth Third, or any other banking institution get away with running two systems (manual and automated) that clearly preys on members funds to benefit their organization.

I actually have had Fifth Third Bank overdraft my account for the second time from what I consider unethical practices. I overdrew $1.11 and was charged $465 in overdraft fees. This is how they do...I had debit charges on my account from THE DAY BEFORE a check for $50 came through which caused me to overdraw $1.11 (my mistake, but I had more than enough money to deposit the next morning to cover it, besides my direct deposit). I would have understood a normal $36 overdraft fee for that one item, but they said the check was 'pending' on the previous day, so in turn they tacked a $36 overdraft fee ON EVERY ITEM that day which total hundreds. How can they do this? This is the second time they've done this to me. They rearrange the debit items from most to least somehow, not the actual time they come onto the account. I work in billing at a very large corporation and we would be fired for rearranging anything on a ledger! From what I can see this is down right FRAUD.

I argee with you . I have a problem with 5/3 Th charging overdraft fee for an account which I closed in Sept. 2008. They have put my name on ChexSystems. There wasn't any money owed at the time this account was closed. They also took money out my other accounts to put into this account. If you decied to take them to court count me in . They have bad customer service and over charge there customers. Someone needs to do something . I owe 1, 400 for an account in which I closed. They gave me no explaination how this could happen. This same thing has happened to me just recently. I am on board to support you and anyone else with going forward with a class action lawsuit. Someone has to put a stop to their bad and unethical practices. Bank of America had a class action lawsuit against them for the same thing that Fifth Third has done. The consumers won that lawsuit. I am on board to support whats right.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com rip off

I closed my Fifth Third account today. I'm sticking with a credit union now. They only charge a $20 fee and thats it. I can say that I'm not the greatest at balancing my check book but these fee's are outrageous! I can understand a one time fee of x amount of dollars for being over. It would seem like you wouldn't be able to use your debit card if your in a negative balance though. I'm a World of Warcraft gamer. I canceled my account for a little while and started it back up. Before all this my phone company decided to charge me a week a early and I wasn't aware of it. So I was thinking I had about $60 to spend. I paid the $15 for the month Warcraft fee. That ended up being a $33 fee. Warcraft also charged me a $1 fee separately to check my account or something like that. Which ended up being another $33 fee. I didn't realize all of this until about 10 days after the situation. Then to top it all off they charged me $6 a day fee until the negative balance was paid off. So that ended up being a $60 dollar fee. So I ended up paying $126 worth of fees for being about $10 over...

Seems like there should be some law against this. Isn't there a law against credit card companies for charging too much interest? Fee's are about the same as interest just paid in a different way.

I'm going with consumers credit union now. From what I heard and seen it seems like a decent place to store your cash. Any comments would be appreciated.

53 bank is such a rip off. I hate the tellers and the mgrs they are all liars. They are rude, nasty liars. And the customers are wrong. Especially when they are tring to steal your money and justify it and then say they are sorry. Well they can just save their apologies and their lies.. They hold your money, all these pending transactions for days, if the money is there clear it. Cash a check oh don't do that you can only get $100.00. And the rest we have to wait for it to clear. I know when i get paid i need to pay my bills.. They got me good. I'm closing my account and i want to hang them...

It is always the banks fault so they say. You should keep better records and understand the charges on your account when you open it up. It appears that the phone company was in error not the bank. I believe the phone company needs to reimburse you the overdraft fees

You should try to contact the phone company. If they billed you a week early, it's their fault and they caused you the overdraft fees. Let them know what happened as a result of their clerical error, and see if they will credit your account. It's not really the bank's fault, you should be mad at your phone company, not the bank.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com horrible service

I have had a horrible experience with Fifth Third and would only recommend them as a last option. My experience began with them 3 years ago. A year into our relationship their business advisors informed me of business option they could offer me to help facilitate my international business. Six months later I had two German clients ready to utilize this option using two different well known and respected German banks. Fifth Third's incompetent employees lied to me and a VP called me telling me that they could not provide the service. What!? It cost my firm $20, 000 and two large clients. This was the biggest shortcoming and most important. On an everyday basis that any user can and probably will experience:

1) An ATM that reported paying out $400 when nothing was paid out. The camera and money count can confirm it. I immediately tried calling but there is no one that can help you until Monday. What!? Monday I was informed it was a common problem with that ATM. It took 1 week for them to correct it. Not next day. Top notch service.

2) Two ATMs at one bank and both not working. Top not service again.

3) Teller is not fluent in English. Asked to have a certified check made out to Diana xxxxxxx. Was asked to write it down. I sad it is five letters. And slowly sad each clearly with proper enunciation. She still did not understand. I am first generation so I understand the difficulties for immigrants and make a point of being open minded and helpful. This to me is unacceptable for someone in her position. This is America and such inability is unacceptable unless we want this country to degrade.

4) $3500 check deposit from a company whose check is deposited twice a month. Three days later took out $500 and was informed $3000 was available by ATM receipt. Fourth day went in to office to withdraw $2000. Was first informed manager's computer was not working properly so had to call other office. Other office computer was not working properly so they could not read the check. Then manager tells me that I had to wait another week for check to clear. What!?

It is sadly becoming common knowledge that checks can bounce a year out.

I have never seen worse service from a bank.

These are personal experiences over several years.

If you want to deal with such problems, incompetence, and inconveniences then risk your money with this bank. Otherwise I recommend you avoid this firm at all costs.

Your all correct they are stealing from hard working Americans. If you don't do something now you will be getting a rate hike of around another dollar or two per overdraft. 35-37.00 will be put through as the new charge. Join the others who gave almost 40 billion dollars last year to the banks. Who is in the right!

I have been banking with 5/3Th bank for 5 years and haven't had any problems. Until July 2008 when there were strange charges on my account. I notified the bank right away. I want through everything on my account one by one which charges were mine and which were not. Than I was told that I couldn't dispute the electric checks, because they had the routing number and account number so I must have given it to them. After fighting with them I decided it would be best to close this account. So on Sept 11, 2008 I closed this account and opened a new one. I hadn't hared anything until Nov. 2008 .When I received a letter from 5/3 Th bank. They said that my account was over drawn $1, 400. I was very angry since this account was closed. 5/3Th also took money out of my other accounts to put into this account. I went to the bank to discuss . I had to file everything again since the person I was dealing with no longer work there.I explained that how can be charge for an account which was close 2 months ago. They side that the account can be open again if there is active. I told them I close the account because of identity theft . I have not hared anything until I want to open a new account at an other bank. 5/3Th put me on ChexSystems for an account which had 1, 00 in when I closed it. My new account is overdrawn due to overdraft fee. This bank has bad customer service .I want to change banks. Patricia A Luster Chicago Il

Requested $200.00 from 5/3 ATM located in Chesterton, Indiana and a fee of $20.00 was requested, I believe this "highway robbery". Would you please explain what is going on, or his this normal operating practice. I, am geting very discussed with 5/3, having over six figures with your bank, I would think that I would be treated better. In this little town of 11, 000 people and a total of 14 banks you would expect better service from 5/3.
Being with this bank since 1978 and going throught all the changes over the years I would expect better.
Sincerely,

I have been banking at the same institution for the past 30 years and was making a deposit when the teller asked me for identification. What is wrong with this picture? However in the winter I bank at the Palm Habror Fl. branch and the people are great.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com terrible experience

Fifth Third Bank foreclosed on my home illegally. They used forged signature on a loan modification, which the interest rate went up. They applied illegally fees for an alleged missing payment for 7 years. NSF on a money order. Applied hazardous insurance when they did not pay for home owner's insurance. Lied about the fee and said it was PMI. The bank sent a letter promising an investigation but within hours sold my home at a sheriff's auction. Offered me a repurchase agreement but in court denied the entire thing. The bank acted as if they were working with me but this was just a scam to get me to court to have me evicted.

This bank stole my home because of all their deceit and undermining ways. Please watch out for this bank because they do not care about any of their customer's!

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com harassment

Sick and tired of getting computer messages and then nitwits harassing me when my loan is not even late. Within 3 days of the grace period I have been harassed constantly that I paid the loan off and told them to shove it. Harass customers that are LATE or missing payments... I have NEVER been late and have to put up with this BS... NO MORE... FIRST THIRD BANK STINKS!

On ALL my taped recordings I constantly tell the caller how disruptive they are and I'll never bank there again. IF you want a CAR loan DISREGARD this group of NIT WITS...

Fifth Third Bank of Cincinnati has an employee whom works from home, this employee regularly boasts at neighbor gatherings how she looks up confidential information on other neighbors should they have an account with 5th 3rd banks!
We are appalled by this!
What can we do to prevent her from further invading our privacy?

I recently went through weeks of harrassment by 5/3. I got a call from a 'collection agency'. They were making up lies and telling me I had $400 that was past due on a loan. They gave me false information, an address that was 15 years old, and then told me that I lied on my loan application.

Well turns out, this 'collection agency' is an internal department of 5/3. I switched car insurance and my insurance agency didn't sent them a certificate. 5/3 purchased insurance and wanted me to pay for it.

I sent them all my insurance information, but continued to get multiple daily phone calls from the 'collection agency' saying that it was going to court.

It took ten phone calls to 5/3 customer service to get them to stop AFTER they received the information they wanted.

I will never do any kind of business with 5/3 again.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com unauthorized credit request!

I was out of town for a week - I get back and there's a handful of mail. It includes a rejection notice for a Fifth Third Platinum card I DID NOT REQUEST - complete with contact information for Equifax so I can find out why I didn't get the card I didn't request.

And in that same handful of mail is a FIFTH THIRD OPTIMUM MASTER CARD ready for activation - I DIDN'T REQUEST THAT EITHER!

I'm desperate to rebuild my credit after a long illness, I do not need this PHONY CREDIT APP and UNINVITED NEW CREDIT LINE on my credit history!

How can a bank run a credit check and reject you for credit you DID NOT REQUEST?

This has to be illegal. I know it hurts your credit. I'm going to check into it.

All I can think is I was at the bank about a month ago and an employee suggested I get overdraft protection. I told her to send me information on it, NOT AUTOMATICALLY APPLY FOR IT ON MY BEHALF! I GAVE NO AUTHORITY!

And the card I received was NOT overdraft protection - although I could APPLY FOR IT IF I WANTED TO.

I'm thinking it's time to change banks. And if they don't make communication to Equifax and the other credit reporting agencies that they did this, not me - I'm going to call an attorney.

This is insane.

I have the same card and got it in the mail after purchasing a condo through 5/3rd. I never use the card only kept it to rebuild my credit. I just received a balance of 94 dollars on my card for yearly fees.
I am really pissed and would like to help with the class action lawsuit.

After purchasing my condo, I received a letter asking if I wanted to split my mortgage payments and pay half every two weeks instead of one monthly because it would save me money. Sounds great only 5/3rd signed me up with a bill payment agency. In order to drop them and accept the bi-weekly offer I have to pay $275 to stop the bill pay agency. 5/3rd should have disclosed this information at closing, if they were really concerned about its custumers and saving me money in the long run.

Thanks for sharing.

It happened to me. I was told by the fifth third bank personnel that they would provide a overdraft protection and I nodded in agreement. A few days later I get the rejection mail and a couple of phone calls from fifth third bank personnel again offering the same service. Days go by and nearly 2-3 weeks later I get this Fifth Third Optimum Gold card and without paying a lot of attention to it I follow the instructions on the card to activate it. Later when I called I was told that the card is not from Fifth Third bank but a third party on behalf of Fifth Third and that they are charging a yearly fee to maintain the card.

This is ridiculous. Why and how and with whose permission did Fifth Third divulge personal information to third party. I have really not paid a lot of attention to the issue, but i sure am pissed at what happened. Taking a legal recourse is a time consuming option which is scarce.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com scam and theft

Fifth third bank is a completely unethical organization in the banking industry. They only post $100 of a person's deposit for 3 days no matter how long they have been banking with them or if they have a 100, 000 dollars on deposit with them. They post date deposits and also charge fees for 'pre-authorizations' that have not even posted to a customer's account. They are disgusting in terms of their predatory fee practices. I imagine most of their profit is derived from this. The 'pre-authorization' debit overdraft charge practice was actually almost outlawed in 2005 and Fifth Third is one of very few banks that pull this crap on their customers. Do not ever use this bank for anything... You will regret it deeply. They are a bunch of ### who specialize on charging as many fees as they can even when a customer has plenty of money in their account. Oh and if you happen to have some unauthorized charges on your account watch out. They will take 15 or more business days to investigate and in the mean time rake up as many fees as they think they can stick you with. ###.

Wow. I am NOT a 5/3 bank customer, and I came on here just to find out if it's an ok bank. Based on this feedback and my own limited experience with the bank, I'm running away from them as fast as I can. I just today received a mailer from them promising $200 with a new account. I called the number and it was really a trick to lob more than a dozen solicitations at me for everything from magazines to medical alert devices to insurance, and I believe it would have kept going if I hadn't given up and disconnected the call. I went on their website to see if I could learn more about the promotion, and there was nothing there. I called customer service, and no one would talk to me without me first giving them my social security number, even though I am not a current customer.

How is this bank still in business?

Just last week 5/3 (Fifth Third Bank) charged me $444 in overdraft fees in one day. There was about $4000 in my account, its a busy business account. Traveling, I used the debit card on several occasions earlier in the week to pay for trip expenses. In one night a $3000 check and a $1000 check went through, leaving an overdraft amount around $1000. In the morning when the bank opened, I called them and said I would be in directly after a morning appointment to make a deposit to cover the overdraft amount. I made a deposit of $1380 at 1030 that morning. There were 11 transactions that went through on the same date as the checks. Several of these were actually charged/purchased by me in the preceding days. The overdraft fee is $37.

So for what is actually an overdraft on one check, the bank justifies charging their customer 12 overdraft fees. It didn't end there. The next day the charged me another $185 in fees and another $30 in fees. The next day another $6 fee. The next day another $18. The next day another $37 even though a $4875 wire transfer was received prior to the fee. Who knows why.

So if one doesn't agree or pay the fees, they are written off on the Checkcare System (or similar) and can not open a new account. I had several accounts with Firth Third to deal with the several boats that I manage. They have snowballed overdrafts on me before by

1) Debit Card Purchases - Even though the amount is deducted from the available balance, when the charge is made, they put the charge through 1 - 4 days later, pretty much it seems waiting for a larger check to go through, and then charge an overdraft fee on it.

2) Reordering Transaction Order - 'We put the largest transactions through first' is their story and this benefits us. ### is thick here. The only reason they reorder transactions is to screw their customer and take our funds. There is no better definition of bottom sucking ### than the execs who think that in the long run this isn't going to bite them in the ###.

3) So many overdraft fees and delayed and reordered transactions almost certainly guarantee them a much greater possibility of substantially more overdraft fees, daily over the limit fees, and whatever other fees they make up.

dont write checks or use your debit card if you dont have funds. add deposits subtract debits, seems pretty easy to me, and doesnt really sound like the banks fault at all. im sure you received disclosures when you opened the account so you should have known what would happen if you were overdrawn. Last time i checked a bank is a business, they want to make money, and they didnt make you write checks that you didnt have funds to cover. its sucks for you but im just saying.

This is exactly what they did to us! We were with First Charter for over 6 years and then 53 bought them out. They actually post the larger amount items first no matter what the order they come in. And yes they charge overdraft fees on pending charges! This bank is all about the money! The branch managers are cowards too, would not return our calls or see us in the branch locations! I hope God blesses the VP's, and Presidents of 5/3 banks!

I agree whole heartedly. I loved first charter. 53 bank is the worst I have ever used. The ridiculous charges are just the tip of the iceberg. This is the worst merger since Wachovia/First Union.

I have never had such unhelpful operators or online sites in my life. Although all of my fees were refunded, they were reapplied at midnight, because the refunds hadn't posted yet.

This is the worst bank I have ever had the displeasure of letting take my money.

I am leaving immediately. Good Riddance 5th 3rd. Go back to St.Louis.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com worst service ever

Filed against :
Fifth Third Bank
2501 W. North Ave.
Melrose Park IL 60160

Complaint Description:
On July 9th 2008 i visited this particular branch to seek help with obtaining the auto loan. The representative (Daniel Mireles) approved me within minutes and promised further assistance. I specifically asked if he will be able to help me with obtaining auto loan for the car that Im obtaining through auction sale. He promised everything we'll be done 2 days top after receiving the VIN # of the vehicle. On July 24th I called informing him that I got the vehicle i wanted and provided him with the VIN#. I specifically asked what else is needed for me to get everything done as soon as possible. Mr Mireles stated that he only needs proof of insurance for the new vehicle and the bill of sale. Next day-July 25th(Friday). I provided Mr Mireles with both documents but then he informed me that he needs copy of the title as well. I was not able to obtain the copy of the title due to auction sale. Mr Mireles submitted all the documents to the management and he said we have to wait until Monday (July 28th) to see what management says. On Monday (July 28th) I called Mr Mireles and his manager Carlos, they both stated that they cant help me until they receive the copy of the title. When I called again to see if there's really nothing we can do, manager of the branch Mr Carlos changed his mind about the title and said that he will need proof of my income (my income tax form) and proof of mortgage payments. I submitted all the documents and called to see if they got it... called 3 times within 2 hour period and each time I was promised to receive a call back. Never got it. Frustrated and short on time I went to the same bank but to a different branch. There, young gentelman help me out in a matter of an hour and submitted all the necessary documents to the underwriter also stating that they got all they need to give me the loan. Happy with the service at a different branch I wanted to switch and continue over there but I've been informed that since I started processing the loan at Melrose Park location I have to finish up over there. I called Mr Carlos to follow up and check if the documents have been signed at the underwriter. Daniel Mireles sounded angry at me because I visited a different branch seeking help and said he will call me back. Never did. On Tuesday (July 29th) I called again to see if I can get my loan taken care of. Daniel Mireles took the day off and the branch manager didn't know what's going on. I went to the bank to see if I can speak to someone. I sat inside for an hour waiting for somone to assist me. Manager of the branch didn't have time for me and sent someone else to help me - Edgar. He explained that I'm not going to get the loan because they don't do auction sale loans even though the car has been registered with the dealership and I was purchasing it from the dealer and not from the auction. I was denied the loan and marked as FRAUD in their system. Fraud? When I told him about my conversation with Daniel Mireles (back on July 9th) and the fact that I specifically asked him if he's gonna be able help me with this particular situation, Edgar replied: "I dont know what your conversation was ... you're not getting a loan". When I told him that different branch is ready to get me the loan he seemed angry and spoke to me like I should go to "that" different branch. I can't apply with that bank at a different location due to "Fraud". I lost the car because of the bad and rude service. In addition to that I received a debit card with newly opened account and the credit card from Fifth Third Bank (through mail) that i NEVER APPLIED for and was NEVER informed about.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com Overdrafts

I can not even believe my present situation.

I loved first charter.in 6 years, it was financial bliss and nothing ever bounced or caused issues. The service was always fantastic, and I could not complain.in fact, I bragged all the time. Then we get a letter that they have been purchased by this so called "bank."

Everything seemed fine until our funds were a little low. That's when the anguish began.

They bounced my rent check (first time in 3 years of renting) because their policy is to process debits first, deposits second! A deposit well over the amount was made minutes later. How is this fair? They rejected the check then proceeded to charge me $132 in nsf fees. I went to the bank branch (crying may I add) and demanded an explanation. They could not even tell me how any of it made sense, so they refunded me $99 of my money. I then had to take a certified check to my rental company tacked on with $80 in fees.

After that, I was paranoid. On wednesday the online account was positive. The next day it was negative $138 due to overdraft fees derived from a pending transaction. But because of how they process, again I was charged $165 in fees. I had my mom bail me out and deposit $180. She is 62 years old and should not be dealing with my stress. The teller told her since it was 11am, and cash, it would post immediately. So we pull up my account online and it's positive $43. A sigh of relief because this bank charges you $6 per day you are negative. Not so. They processed it the next day but it was eaten up with fees by that point. So it was negative 88 dollars and now I owe my mom 180 on top of that.

I go to the local branch hysterically crying and no one can help me. They said because they credited me $99 back last week, that was all they could do. So I closed my savings and 2nd checking account on the spot. If our checks weren't being deposited in 5 days, you can bet I would have closed it right then.
So thursday, mom deposits $100 to fix the account - again before 2pm. The account was positive.

This morning, we're negative $28. Why? A pending transaction from 12pm wednesday (today is saturday) that has sat for days. There was money in the account to pay for this. But again... They processed my debits first and obviously mom's deposit did nothing again.

I have been on the phone with this so called bank and what an unsympathetic group. I begged for someone in a suit with some clout, she said they didn't have access to that person. Basically their attitude was s.O. L. I couldn't believe it.

So now we're in the hole $26- and this group of idiots have cost us somewhere around $450 - not to mention I took 2 days off from work to open a new account with a bank. I have never been treated so unfairly in my life, and I have already left voice mails with a few consumer protection lawyers. This bank has only been here in nc since june 9th.
My statement makes absolutely no sense and i'm not taking this lying down. If you like to have money, you had better not bank here.

I have one that takes the cake with these people. Someone at the banking center gave someone my saving account info when they called. these people then put money into my account. It was a nigeria based scam. So they put 12k in my account but the Merchant services took the money back then some. When I got her Merch services all taken care of and I closed that savings account " Bank Protection" Reopened the account I closed and put a 500k hold on it and my other 2 accounts. Then they Closed the other 2 accounts while these scam artist took money from my savings. I have not been able to use my accounts in over a month. I called and the Branch Manger told me that he was able to get my money back ( I am in Texas and my branch is in bay city Michigan.) so he had hopped to have the money to me last friday ( chrismas Eve) I called today and he is on vacation till the 30th meanwhile the Cashier was totally rude with me and told me I have to be present for a official Check to be issued to me since they have closed my Accounts. Mind you Bank Protection tells me that the banking center closed the account the banking center says Bank Protection and I had no access to any of my money for the holidays.

On a note I did receive a notice in the mail about a class action law Suit in regards to 5/3 over draft but here is what takes the cake.

I had an account that was Charged off of 5/3 back in may when I took ill. So when I got this mysterious deposited ( the 12K was broken up into 4 payments) I called the depositor ( info they gave the bank) and they said it was authorized so I payed off the charged off account. When it came up a week later that the money was put in they illegally I had to pay the Merchant company every penny of it back. so the Charged off account that I had planned on paying off was paid out of the account that had the fraud money put into it. So 5/3 told me that since that account had fraud active they are not going to show the charge off as paid. Even though I have in writing from the Merchant company that all money owed to them are paid and 5/3 has not returned the money to my accounts or attempted to pay the Merchant company this money. Yet no one will answer me what has happend to this money. I got its not your money to pay bills with and when I explained that I had to barrow money from my family to pay this company the money I used. They said they dont know but they are not going to show the account paid.

and still they have not answered my question if the company says its mine why does 5/3 think they have the right to keep it?

I also was a First Charter customer and never had any problems with them. Now Fifth-Third has charged me $390 in overdraft fees from 5/3-5/6 because a check for $200 cleared that they allowed to clear and then reversed the next day! When I asked about lowering the fees, they practically treated me like I was a dead-beat and told me they could talk to the regional manager, but didn't think it would be adjusted. Nice customer service, huh?!

By the way they are trying to hike up the 33.00 to 35.00 and 37.00 per insufficient funds. This has to stop there is no reason this should be even close to 10.00 let along 33-37.00 plus daily over draft fees.

They did the EXACT same thing to me. It all started at Christmas while I was on vacation I ended up in the hospital. The day I returned I deposited $1450 into the bank. The next day the account was already negative and after 1 week I became negative $864 in CHARGES ONLY! Nina.birtolo@53.com is the one you can blame if you live in Florida!

They will be the next bank to sink, and they obviously have no idea. Obviously by the dates of all the complaints online, its becoming more frequent and more obsurd by the day. Good Luck Fifth Third, Its companies like this that killed the Economy to begin with!

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com lost my payments

Fifth Third Bank lost my April, May and June mortgage payment. They called my home on an "unknown caller" number on several occassions to find out when I would make my payment? Ha, They also sent delinquent notices, Ha. I faxed over to them the confirmations numbers from my online banking of all my payments. I received a call on SUNDAY from an unknown caller number, it was Fifth Third Bank and a guy, named "Paul" using language as if he was a collection agency was demanding money. The late payment information showed up on my credit report! I asked Paul for the CEO information, he gave a name but no contact information.

I found on my own it is Kevin Kabbot from the headquarters in Cinninati, Ohio.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com total incompetence

In 40+ years of banking, I have never come across a more uncaring, incompetent, bank. Fifth Third recently bought out my bank --First Charter. When my First Charter CD came due and I was a few days late in cashing it in (although well within the grace period), I was told that the residual interest I had earned from the day the CD came due until the day I cashed it out would only be paid if I renewed my CD with them. Despite the fact that I had two accounts with them and First Charter had told me that residual interest would be paid when I cashed in the CD, Fifth Third refused to honor this. I have cashed out scores of CD's from many different banks over the years, and not one has failed to pay residual interest! When I then closed out my accounts, they shorted me $100 and they have been promising me for weeks that they would "investigate" and get back to me. Believe me, if they had over paid me, I would have heard about it the next day. My new bank was agast when I told them all this and the customer rep. told me they are getting new accounts from disgruntled 5/3 customers by the boatload. And, my new bank's interest rates are far superior. Fifth Third has lost three accounts worth over $750, 000 (one is a local business) and I won't rest until I have cost them a cool million. GO BACK TO OHIO, FIFTH THIRD!

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com overcharging late fees and escrow

I have been trying to correct an overcharging problem with this bank for about 2 months now. When asked to speak to someone else, the girl said "sure... you can call back" and hung up on me. I am being overcharged on late fees, double to triple for about 4 years now. they were overcharging me in my monthly payments by almost 100 dollars per month for over 16 months. I was told they would have to recalculate and that takes time! I am still waiting. And to top it off, they were taking me to court for being behind on my payments. I could have lost my home. So far I have found about 2 k they overcharged me. And I am still not done. I have to go over one issue at a time since that is all they can handle.

(1) Fifth Third didn't pay my 2008-09 taxes because they inadvertently froze my escrow account during a refinancing process.

(2) Despite assurances they would pay late payment fee penalties due to the treasurer's office, Fifth Third paid the penalties from my escrow - information I found out only incidentally when I called regarding the status of my account - and two supervisors refused to reverse the payment, insisting i was responsible for my taxes. A third supervisor finally agreed with me.

(3) I have just been informed that I have an escrow shortage of $4405 that once paid will result in a $70 increase in my mortgage payments - this despite my taxes actually having gone down!

I have a mortgage account with 5/3rd Bank which was established in August of 2008. I received a letter along with a bill in the mail, in February, stating my escrow account was short about $2, 000.00. I called customer service mortgage department and could not get a valid reason for this shortage. I was also told during the telephone conversation that my escrow account had a negative balance, which was lower, in October. October was when my 1st mortgage payment was due. I then decided to call the lender that opened the account and she stated it was due to homeowners' insurance and taxes. I asked why I wasn't informed sooner and how could this have happened within a few months. No one wants to be bothered and I'm constantly given the same explanation by customer service who will not allow me to speak to anyone else such as a supervisor or manager. I also, have been requesting bank statements of payments for the account and still haven't received them. I now realize how some people lose their homes.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com customer service is awful

I have been given incorrect information from my banks customer service repeatedly and then the manager calls to tell me my account in negative. Not only does she tell me a specific check did not go thru when in fact it did, I am also charged huge fees. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have no confidence in this bank at all. I have called the bank before and there response time is hours. I am sorry I went with this bank.

Thanks to 'Freedom of Speech', so that we may spare others the same misery.
I too have decided to bank elsewhere for the lack of customer service, and 'attitudes '
I have encountered at some drive-up service windows.
Too often I have gone to the ATM machine to withdraw cash from my account, only to find
it is 'out of service', and without a sign posted to tell you in advance.
I went into the lobby to use my debit card, and they wouldn't accept it, instead wanted to charge me a $3.00 fee for a counter check, to take cash from my account.
I do not carry my checkbook with me, and have been a customer at this local bank
for over five years.
Why should it cost me, when their machine is not in working order. And why are they in the banking business anyway ?
Maybe some of them " should quit their day job", and give us a break !

I am in total agreement with you. Thank you for sharing this with us.
We know exactly how you feel...
In the name of "Freedom of Speech" here is my experience with this same bank.
Two months ago I had an awful experience with this bank also.
Even though it was their mistake, I had a debit charge for a purchase I made for merchandise,
taken out of my account twice.
The local chainstore gave this bank more than enough proof, eletronically, and verbally,
after many phone calls to this bank, to let them know it was the banks error. I gave a computer generated copy of the transaction to the bank, from this same store, and they also received another copy of this transaction from the store.
It was so clear, yet I had to initiate a dispute, which even after ten business days, and in actuality fourteen days, no credit was received. No call either, no word from this bank, as to
why they were holding back my money. Four days later I refused to sign a new dispute for the same problem, and I demanded my money back. Four days pass, and after many calls and wasted time spent on the phone, they credit my account with the correct amount. Two days after this, they decide to remove the money from my account, and never even tell me they are doing so. I call to ask why they did this, and am told they are looking into the matter again.
This amount was for almost $350.00, I am not talking pocket money !
After many calls to this bank and demands for my money to be rightfully given back to me, they take four more days to credit it to my account. Now I see two credits appear, and I see
they are more confused then I thought...and they are "bankers"...Hmmmmm...
I took my $350.00 out of that account, left their $350.00 error in there, which they acted quickly upon, and took it out the next day. Obviously their money matters to them, and
" mine didn't ", is the message I got. To keep this account would mean that I would have to monitor it 24/7, to avoid errors of theirs that might be very costly to me... and perhaps have to go through this again in the future. No Thanks ! Needless to say I bank elsewhere now, and this bank is in the past, where it will stay for good. This was so unfair, and was a great inconvenience for me and my family, at a time when school was starting, and money was greatly needed!
A week after this was over, I received a letter from their home office,
which was postmarked two weeks after I received my first credit, and mailed five days after they printed it, and received another five days later. It said " we cannot credit your account, as the local store issued you a credit ". All in all this is almost a month later !
In closing they stated the following message at the bottom of their letter to me, which reads...
"For information on our products and services, stop by any of our Banking Centers, or visit us online. We'll show you how the things you do today can bring you closer to a better tomorrow"... Thanks but no thanks !
I ALREADY FIGURED THAT ONE OUT FOR MYSELF...

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com raping customers of money

5/3 Bank sucks! They are constantly raping people's bank accounts. If the money is deposited and they decide you have overdrawn--even though it is there, they will take your money. They just do not care about the customer. Run from this company. I will be your worst customer service night mare. I tell everyone I talk to (and I work with a lot of clients in Cincinnati) never to bank at 5/3 and to withdraw there money and find accounts elsewhere. Run! I suggest everyone pull their accounts out of this "business" if you want to call them one. You suck!

I pulled our personal and business accounts from 5/3 bank. We originally had "Totally Free Checking, " but they changed the accounts and we were being hit with monthly fees. Then, to top it all off, they charged my business service fees for depositing more than $5000 in cash in one month. WHAT? That is INSANE! Who charges fees on DEPOSITS? Remember when "Cash was King?" Well, apparently cash is too much of a hastle for 5/3 Bank, so I suggest you take your business elsewhere. We have since opened accounts with Huntington Bank. MUCH better.

I agree, 5/3 bank sucks. I had let my account get low but I checked at 9:00 at night and I was good. I knew I would be fine because I had a pay check going in at midnight. I get up today and have a double overdraft fee and 1600.00 in the bank at the same time and they wont help me out. For some reason they justify this. I say F 5/3 I'm going to Huntington to set up am account tomorrow.

Biggest rip-off in the banking industry. I fell behind on my Home equity line. I have direct deposit, so the money is available Fridays. I take $500.00 and move it to my account I pay my bills with and pay 5 things. On Monday I check my balance and my account is $163.00 overdrawn. They decided that on Friday after my deposit went in they would take $347.00 to pay my equity loan and then causing 5 things to overdraw. I called them and told them that I would like them to reverse the overdraft fees that they had caused and they told me they couldn't. So let me get this right, you can take money out of my account---causing it to be overdrawn and they you can charge me for the overdraft----WTF. Changed banks the next day.

I just left my local branch office after reconciling a fee dispute. Unfortunately, I need to return there tomorrow to close my account because the reconciliation transactions were still pending. This was the final straw that broke the camel's back. I had been bitten several times in the past for small amount and was able to resolved them. I have gotten tired of constantly having to watch to see if they have screwed up my account. I would hate to have an account with 5/3 and not have Internet access to monitor my account. Had I not had access this time, who knows how much it would have cost me at $8.00 waiting for my monthly statement to show up. That is $8.00 a day for a $0.48 mistake. Luckily, I caught it at the $56 mark. This is one bank that needs to go out of business. I switched to Chase as my primary bank 2 1/2 years ago and haven't had any issues with them. I just hope 5/3 doesn't screw up my account by tomorrow so I can close out the account.

I agree 100% They are terriable! They hit my account for $133.00 In "service fee"s. Not overdraft.. i had 1 pending debit card purchase out! It was a $12 purchase at the gas station. It didnt even clear yet and they charged me the money. This bank is crazy. I tried to reason with the bank that i had banked at for 10 years.. and they wouldnt reverse the charges. Needless to say.. i have seen left 5/3 bank and telling everyone that i know they are going broke and to switch banks. so far i have gotten 14 other people to change there accounts. I think everyone should do the same. This bank is crazy and the only way to stop them is to have people close there accounts. Please.. pass the message on so we can stop this bank.

Carrollwood Branch in Tampa, FL has the worst manager! She was very condescending and rude. 1st time I dealt with her was when she waived overdraft fees from my account that technically never was overdrawn and then responded, "I will NEVER remove another fee for you again." And she was serious, even when her employees made a mistake by telling me that there was not going to be a hold on my deposit. The 2 employees, also at the Carrollwood Branch were wrong, there was a hold and now I have to pay for their mistake. Thank goodness my friend was with me so I have an additional person to help spread the word about how much 5/3 SUCKS! Oh they get more pathetic. When I called the bank, the representative who made the deposit for me told me that he wasn't wrong because technically there was no hold on my deposit, the check was just floating for a day (haa haa) And to top it off, the deposit was excess funds from my student loan, which is from 5/3's

5/3 is the greediest bank i have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. On two separate occasions, my account was overdrawn- due to their shoddy banking practices. Once costing me $132 and the other costing me over $250! both times- even though they agreed it wasn't my fault- they would not reverse all of the overdraft charges. it was against "corporate policy". Apparently, corporate policy is to screw the customer over in every way possible. i am closing my account with 5/3 and am looking forward to the day when they finally go under!

The late fees they have on anything is out of this world. I have never heard of anything so messed up. My father-in-law has a vehicle financed through them, and he was 4 days late on a payment. After it was all said nad done, it ended up costing him $140.00 in late fees for 4 days. They don't notify you until it is too late that if not padi by seven days the fee doubles. I personally have been robbed on my checking account by them. I depositted money one day, and some checks went through that night after I depositted money. They bounced 4 checks because they say the money wasn't through my account. When I went to the bank they were extremely rude, and I was told that they run the highest amount first so this way the other checks would bounce. They actually told me that. Thats like a crook telling me he is going to rob my house later. They suck as a bank, and the people that work in several of te locations around me are so rude. I hope they go out of business, it would be a saving grace for many people who think this bank is so great.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com installment auto loan

I bought a vehicle in October of 2007 which is financed by 5/3 bank. My first payment was on time however the teller did not realize that the bank does not accept credit card cheques. I called the bank because I didn't receive a receipt and was told that I can make my payment with the next month's payment d/t that error. I went to the bank to make the payments in three checks, one for each month and one for the late fee which they said may be waived. So on top of being charged a late fee, I received a call from a creditor warning me that my car was up for Repossession on the day that I had already made my payments as agreed! I had to give my personal info on that day to pay the extra month's car note. I still was receiving calls at work with threats from nasty 5/3 CSR's stating that I was a month behind, then when I called I got an apology because their system couldn't show all the information because it was turned over to the collection department. Then. more drama in March I received a letter stating that they didn't get my car insurance info and they need it to be faxed to them or they will purchase a policy for me. I refaxed it and thought that it was taken care of, then I got a final warning in April telling me I had 10 dyas or they'd purchase a policy for me. I faxed the old insurance and the new insurance info to the insurance department and was told that the previous fax must have been illegible & may have been thrown away. I called on the tenth day to make sure that the info was there and was assured that the fax was recieved. Then a few days later another call! I spoke with the insurance department again and the gentleman said that he sees my calls into them, as well as my faxes, my old insurance was in a different area- but the number of the policy seemed off to him, however since my old policy could not be found in the insurance company's website, they could not honor my fax. I told him that when I called the number on the letter provided it says that my account is fine so please fix whatever the issue is and stop the calls. He said they still purchased the insurance policy even though the letter said it would be purchased on April 10th if I DID NOT send my insurance info again! I was assured that he'd stop the calls in the meantime and just pay the extra $49.30 with my next payment before May 15th until they can fix the insurance issue. I agreed to do so if they'd credit me back once they fix their system- because the calls from the CSR's are to collect an overdue payment from December- a supposed glitch! It is now May 7th and I am getting 5-8 calls per day starting at just before 8am and until 9pm! I got a call at 9am and then again at 10:12am today, which I answered and said that I have already spoken to insurance department, I was assured that the calls would stop from a supervisor, and I am not behind on any payments please do not call me at work. The CSR said "Either you talk to me right now about your account or you will keep getting calls.", I said, " Ma'am I have spoken to various people and was assured that these calls would have stopped as of April 26th, please do not call again, I am at work and I have to hang up now.", She said, "Well, you'll keep getting these calls then since you don't want to talk to me!", in an elevated tone; then after, I hung up...What should I do?

Fifth Third Bank is stealing from us. We had a car loan from a GM dealer and 5 3 would not let us pay it off. They refused to give us the account number so that we could pay it off. Before the first payment was due, we paid over 95% of the loan amount. this was the amount they told us was due. They next harassed us on Saturday, threatening us that we were in default. We finally overpaid the loan.
We also had an extended warranty which we immediately cancelled three days after getting the loan giving us a total refund. This was part of the loan we had with 5 3 bank. They were to refund this warranty cost in full. We never received the refund check. After many calls to 5 3 bank in which they said a check was sent, they told us another check was being sent. We received a check dated the day after that last call. We deposited it in our local bank. Two weeks later, 5 3 bank stopped payment on the check effectively stealing money out of our account. Not only that, our bank charged us a fee for this. We have been calling 5 3 bank for a week and they keep giving is the run around. This is common theft. They have no intention of giving us our money back. They will not let us talk to anyone but a telephone screener.
My advice is to run as fast as you can from Fifth Third Bank. If not, you will regret it.

Fifth Third Bank / 53.com relocation

I recently relocated to Penn from Cincinnati, OH. I forgot to close my checking/debit card account in person at site branch before leaving. In Oct 2007, I made a full payoff of credit card for $87.89 (that was stated as card balance). I also updated all contact information to new address and phone number. In January I recieved a letter indicating that my credit card balance has been due for 60 days and that they had reported to credit bureau. It turns out that the credit balance i paid in full on hte internet was the balance from LAST statement and did not reflect a late payment charge to my account made a week prior. So when I paid the 87.89 i really owed 87.89 + 19.00 dollars but the website wont tell you that until next statement. My attempt to update my contact information apparently failed. My old number area code (859) had been changed to area code (717) but nothing else was changed. When I asked customer service when was this information changed, "we do not have that information". So no ability to explain how my contact info had been partially updated. The reason this is a big deal is because, i was told, had they had the proper contact information they would have contacted my right away about the matter. This is one of the worst banks I have ever! seen in operation. If you are in Ohio/PA area, please check into this bank before signing anything. PNC bank is much much better to deal with.
