In March 2020, I completed all academic requirements and was approved for graduation from Capella University with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. At the time, I satisfied all institutional requirements necessary to be cleared for graduation.
Subsequent to graduation, I did not receive my diploma. Upon contacting the university, I was informed for the first time that an outstanding balance of approximately $4,400 existed on my account. This balance was not clearly disclosed to me prior to or during the graduation clearance process.
Throughout my enrollment, my understanding was that my federal student aid fully covered the cost of my coursework. At no point prior to graduation was I made aware of any deficiency in funding or outstanding institutional balance requiring resolution.
As a result of this undisclosed balance, the university has withheld my diploma since 2020.
It is important to note that prior to enrolling, I encountered multiple reports from other students alleging similar experiences involving unexpected post-completion balances. Despite this, I proceeded with enrollment in good faith, relying on the expectation of transparent financial practices.
During my time at the institution, more than $150,000 in student loan funding was disbursed on my behalf, which remains my financial obligation. The subsequent assertion of an additional balance — combined with the continued withholding of my diploma — raises serious concerns regarding financial disclosure practices and institutional accountability.
This matter warrants further review. I am requesting:
• A detailed, itemized accounting of the alleged balance
• Documentation demonstrating when and how this balance was disclosed
• Clarification of the university’s policies regarding diploma withholding
• Immediate resolution that results in the release of my diploma
I reserve the right to pursue additional remedies if this matter is not addressed appropriately.
Desired outcome: At this time, I am also seeking to resolve this matter in good faith. Due to the length of time that has passed and financial hardship during that period, I would like to discuss available options for: • loan forgiveness
