I have been using Bitdefender a while now, since 2017 on this account. It is great software (although I don't like being nagged, and it nags A LOT, but I will tolerate it for such a vital service.)
I liked the software so much I tried 3 times to solve this with the company.
I did not like it enough to get scammed a forth time...
They WILL auto bill you and they will upgrade you without consent, PERIOD!
I have fought this on 3 separate renewals... Each time I was assured auto renewal was off. It wasn't. I only wanted "Virus protection plus" But, I was involuntarily upgraded to the more expensive "Total protection" TWICE!
On the 1st occasion, spoke w/CS at length. I was promised that auto renew was off and that after this billing expired I would be free to choose my tier IF I chose to renew. Guess what?! I was renewed at the higher rate.
I wrote an angry email after no CS picked up the phone. Again told auto renewal is off. Nothing changed. Although I was invited to take a customer satisfaction survey that did not exist! The irony was tangible...
So here is an excerpt of the most recent email to me 8/7/25:
"Please note that the automatic-renewal option for your Bitdefender Total Security license has been successfully canceled. "
"Note: this is NOT "anti virus plus" that I signed up for, but rather the next tier of more expensive "Total Security" software."
I went and checked today while paying bills online and guess what?! My auto renewal was on! (9/18/25) I turned it off again and added my confirmation email to my folder of BS from Bitdefender.
The company policy is DENIAL and stonewalling!
"You did this, not us."
Prove otherwise! is their motto. I will include my email and I absolutely guarantee you they will deny, blame the subscriber (me), and stonewall!
But I think after this BS happens THREE times that the pattern is self evident.

I am a little shocked that a complaints reconciliation rate of 40% earns them such a good review here...
Anyway, I cut them off of my CC for good, won't auto renew again! But I will never see any of the $$$ they took either.
Recommendation: I hate to say it, because the software is solid, but avoid this company!! They will over bill you and blame you for it.
