There has been a persistent refusal by ABSA employees to assist with the (VISA) chargeback process since this fraud was uncovered and reported.
An AI query and response was found to be a thousand times more helpful than anyone at ABSA that I have had the misfortune to engage with.
The delays in responding with an escalation procedure have also persisted and I also remain without a response to this requested procedure.
I took it upon myself to attempt to contact the mysterious thandeka.mtakwende@absa.africa but the only response was a bland out-of-office message.
I have had it repeated to me during both of the telephone conversations that I have had with ABSA employees that ABSA refuses to assist due to the card details being entered into what was later found to be a fake website. No ifs or buts about this, that is it. Job done. Finish.
The post investigation email states..
“Kindly note as you have provided the merchant with your card details the transactions cannot be deemed as fraudulent.”
ABSA has effectively accused me of being the sole cause of this fraud even though I could not have known that it was a setup.
And even though it was the ABSA security system confirmation code that falsely assured me that the transaction was secure when it was not.
But the AI response finds that this was not my fault at all. It sees me as the victim of the fraud, not the perpetrator. It advises..
You Are Not Liable If:
You were misled into using a fake site,
You used a secure method (e.g., 3D Secure or OTP),
And you can prove non-receipt of goods or fraudulent activity.
All of the above applies.
✅ The Bank May Be Liable If:
They fail to assist with fraud protection mechanisms,
Or refuse a valid chargeback without justification.
Both of the above applies.
I have previously provided an email from the sportswear vendor (Brooks) spokesperson in South Africa that confirms that the website that I was directed to was indeed a fake entity.
Nothing that I have provided has been acknowledged and nothing that I have explained has even been listened to.
Repeated emailed promises of assistance within 48 hours have never been fulfilled.
There is no interest in anything that I have provided other than that a fake website was involved – thereby the process was declare a Dispute and automatic case closed.
Absolutely disgusting behavior for any reputable business concern. I never realized that the risk of using an ABSA credit card was so great.
And I believe the vast majority if not all users remain totally unaware of the real and genuine risk of using an ABSA credit card.
Recommendation: Avoid using ABSA.
