My wife and I booked an 8-day Rhine River cruise months ago. As the day got closer, we kept checking the Rhine's river depth. It was getting very shallow due to extreme temperatures and draughts. Two weeks ago, we realized that large sections of the Rhine were too shallow to navigate a longboat. My wife called Viking's customer service center and were told everything is just fine! A few days ago, a Viking longboat ran aground on the Danube! Viking must think that travelers are stupid! She called again and was told everything is just fine! We cancelled our trip yesterday as the Rhine now from above Koblenz to Strasburg was too shallow! After we cancelled, we received notification from Viking that all was not well on the Rhine! Here's their fix...Extended stay in Rotterdam then we will bus you to Strasburg! 355 miles of the 400 mile trip is now gone. But wait we will buy you a nice lunch on the way in a BUS! This trip should have been cancelled! Think of the folks who did not have trip insurance, they must be pissed!
Recommendation: DO NOT TRUST VIKING!!!!!
Four of us also booked that cruise months ago. We just spent hours on the phone with Viking. They were no help at all. We are just screwed. They wrote us a letter telling us the bus trip is 400 miles! If I wanted a bus trip, I would have scheduled one. I scheduled a river cruise. They cannot provide one but refuse to refund our money. If we don't go, we'll lose about $20,000. They offer to give us a 60% voucher for a future trip, but who wants to cruise with someone that already screwed you once? I read so many good reviews regarding Viking, but I will be telling my story again and again.
