I have a Sam's club account that I only used once in the past year. Today, I was going over my accounts and files, and decided that I no longer need my membership. I went online to my membership and I noticed that my membership has expired, but my contact information and debit card information is still on file.
I tried to use the chat line to ask that my account is deleted, but it told me that the policy was to deleted accounts 2 years after expiration.
I decided to call and talk to a person. I called the 1888-746-7726 number.
The AI answered and was trying to navigate me to get help. I told AI that I wanted to delete my online account. AI transferred me to the Consumer Privacy Support Line. After a few moments, a woman answers and asks me what I need help with. I tell them that I want to delete my online Sam's Club account. They tell me that they are a Walmart representative and they are unable to help me, but they will transfer me to someone who can.
After a few moments, a man answers the phone, and repeats the same thing that the woman I spoke to earlier said.
At this point, I know I'm getting the run around. He tells me that he's from Walmart, and that Sam's Club and Walmart share the same help line. Then he blames AI, and that I should hang up and call again. I asked to speak to his supervisor, but he refused. He argued with me and said it was not his fault. I told him that I'm the consumer, so how is this my fault? I asked him if the call was monitored, he would not tell me. He went silent and would not speak to me. I had no choice but to hang up.
I also read a paragraph on the Sam's Club website under "Cancel Membership link. It basically says that "after your membership is canceled, they may retain some of your information if it is needed to comply with our legal obligations, comply with our record retention policies, or otherwise permitted by law."...which sounds like a BS loophole to me.
Why would a company need to hang on to your contact information, and credit card information after your account is canceled and account is deleted and there are no pending legal matters or complaints regarding your account and membership.
I'm a senior, and retired military, I have never seen this with any company I've ever dealt with in the pass. How does a policy like this comply with the Consumer Protection Laws in your state.
Because of this issue, I will never apply for another Sam's Club membership.
I will never shop at Sam's Club or Walmart because of this. I will also report this issue the Better Business Bureau, and I will contact my State Rep and make a complaint there as well.
Lastly, I was unable to upload any photos to support my complaint.
Recommendation: I would not recommend anyone who has never had a Sam's Club membership to become a member.
