When I purchased my Rain Soft home water filtration system back in 1999 I was never told that every 2-3 years someone would have to come out and "service the system". What they actually mean by that is charge you $84.95 to come out and take out the old tanks (new ones will cost you $99.95) and replace a filter under your sink ($85.00). When I purchased this system I thought it would only cost me the original $5,000 (approximately) and that was it, guaranteed for life. Yeah right. I made a service call because one of the tanks was leaking only to be told I should have been contacted 6 years ago (and every 2 years thereafter) to switch out tanks and then got all the other explanation. Of course their solution for the unanticipated costs were to take $41 off of the total of $291.34 to come out and fix their fault product. I don't recommend buying this product. It is very costly and then more cost to the buyer every 2 years, not to mention the salt you have to add to the tank about 1-2 times a month at an additional $10 cost. If you do decide to get this product, good luck, very costly, bulky and hidden fees.
fraud and cheating!
When my wife and I originally bought this system, we were adamant about the fact that we didn't want this account to be like a credit card. We were assured by the sales rep that it was a fixed rate and not an open-ended credit account. An open-ended credit card account is the biggest rip-off going, and we both new that based on past experiences so therefore we wanted no part of it. Unfortunately, we were both lied to and find ourselves paying this bill off by utilizing another credit card with lower interest.
Every Rainsoft dealer is separately owned and opperated, and financing is based per dealer. The main line of credit is not a revovling account, as you have described. And this is the line of credit we try to offer to most customers. However, based on situations such as income, debt/income ratio, credit scores, etc that are out of our hands, some customers are put on a revolving account with a lower monthly investment, making the system more affordable on a monthly basis. I am sorry you were not made aware of the revolving account. The distribution agency I work for has the installation department bring out the credit contract and go over everything with the homeowner before installation. I'm not sure how the distribution agency you dealt with works, but that is supposed to be standard procedure. I do want to apologize on the behalf of Rainsoft for this inconvenience to you and your family.
high price - poor quality
Our experience with our rainsoft watersoftener has been a bad one. We paid thousands of dollars for the softener and it has been a maintenance nightmare. Every couple of years it malfunctions where it runs its brine out on to the carpet. There seems to be no warranty that applies as we are always charged for parts and labor. The latest setback has been the timer that rainsoft no longer makes parts for. Their solution is a 800.00 updated controller that costs more than entire systems purchased elsewhere. My sister and her husband were in high pressure sales of watersofteners in the 80's. They scolded me for buying rainsoft when I bought my unit in '99. They said at the time there were better softeners out there for 600.00 Just because something costs more doesnt mean its better.
I had the warantee in my hands I took it upon myself to actually READ the LIMITED LIFETIME WARANTEE. Maybe more people should actually READ. It's not that hard and it doesn't take that long.
Wouldn't anyone notice if they had a rebuilt motor? I would think that the work order would specify that this type of work was done, this is just one word against another. There are so many people out there that are super happy with their systems. Some people are just looking for something to complain about. Yes, I am implying something.
I agree--- I think there is some shady stuff going on at Rainsoft. I called Discovery Marketing (that is who Rainsoft.com told me to call for Florida) and they said I had a PAST DUE bill to cover before they would send out a repair person at $125 for the first half hour. Apparently, they rebuilt a motor last year and never told me about it! I remember calling them last year for salt delivery and they said if I bought X amount of salt that they would do a "free inspection" of my unit. Well, I left them a check for the pre-determined amount, and that was that...until now, a year later when they informed me that they had rebuilt the motor and that I still owed on it. WHAT?!?!? I never even received a bill for these unwanted repairs! The customer service person offered to take the late charges off for me...ugh. I am digusted with Rainsoft and Discovery Marketing. What a scam!
No one there cares if tank leaks!
I came home and one of the tanks are leaking on the upper side, unable to shut it off to keep it from leaking. My wife called the "customer service" number if you can call it that. They never decided to call us back and just go home or something, because no one else answered after that. The water is running under my house as it leaks, it will not be long before I have a pond under there. Which is not going to help the kitchen drain that they cracked during installation. Then we have the coupons for groceries and other services that you have to pay to receive, or the free vacation. Tried calling the line for the free vacation in the middle of the day, must have been taking a ciesta, because no one was answering the phones for that one. Maybe they were just giving out free vacations for the one caller they picked up the phone for. I don't know. I do know that the product is not worth the money. Their soaps , they also gave a 5 year supply of soap, in which I received, which may not actually last the five years, is no where near as strong as an actual cleaner. The whole unit, which was made to sound like it was much smaller, is plastic and bulky and not built as good as it needs to be. I totally makes my back patio look awful gawdy and there is not that big of a difference in the water quality itself. I think this is some crack junk someone is out saling, otherwise they would not be trying to give away all of this "free"stuff to get you to take it. I would love it if they would just come get this thing and put it where it belongs, in the GARBAGE. Needless to say it is not worth the $8,000.00 i spent on it.
You are all correct folks, , we sent them on there way after a boring two hours, , the guy wasnt happy when I told him the yellow bottle looked like my last p specimen, , 8K indeed and if the mystery soap was so great they would sell it on the outside.Home depot needs to have more employees then sale stooges standing around flipping their minnows
Our rep was an hour late, but apologized and stayed about 75 minutes. I Googled his company right in front of him and showed him the many complaints. He backed off and never gave us a firm price. I have a feeling we might just all survive into adulthood drinking our tap water. We took the $30 Home Depot gift card and sent him on his way.
RainSoft rep took 2-1/2 hrs. to do what on phone they said would take 1 hr. Then hard sell. Then, when we didn't buy, he said at least get in touch w/ him within 24 hrs. We took the time in between to check the internet --- RainSoft comments on internet are about 95 negative to 5 positive. So we called back and said that we couldn't make up our mind that fast, needed to do more research on various systems, and, being honest with him, gave him the results of what we found on the internet... He got mad, said a few things, and hung up on me. I called him back to let him know I would be adding my negative comments to the internet as well! Bottom Line: RainSoft came to us through running across their rep in Home Depot. They charge you approximately double for a system that you can get lots of other places, and I'm sure they split the windfall between Home Depot and the rep. They're at least double other systems of same calibre, and that's after giving you the 'discount' for buying the same day of the demo (pressure selling).
CONCLUSION: GIVE RAINSOFT (AND ANYONE ELSE HOME DEPOT SENDS YOU FOR THAT MATTER) A WIDE BERTH... DON'T TOUCH THEM!

All I've read is true. We has a system put in at our house as well as one in my daughters and son in law.
Not only do you need to watch them but if they ask you to finance this with a company they deal with DON"T.
We had ours installed 2 years ago @ 12.000.00f or both homes. Had payments set up after 2 month on auto draft. Didn't think any more about it...to make a long story short after 2 years of paying 250. a month I still owe 10, 000. Interest rate went up due to two late payments...because the date we set up for them to auto draft was on a weekend, banks closed.
Monday payment was late...Am paying this off by the end of this month...tired of wasting hard earned $ on their B...S...
Rainsoft sales people should take note of the time when coming out to a home to perform a "demonstration" (which I'm not completely sure is not full of "tricks") the sales person arrived at around 7:00pm and did not leave until around 11:30pm.
In my opinion this is rediculous, and is a waste of time for the consumer. I do however agree with another post that I saw in that the salesperson's tactic is to tire the individual which in turn doesn't allow for clear thinking.
And what about the water test, where it looks like chicken soup? does everyone's?
I honestly think my friend got suckered into buying this unit, all under the guise of an Outback gift card!
If it had been me, I honestly would have told the guy off and would have asked him to leave!
A Rain Soft rep called to set up a demo and offered a no obligation gift (family vacation). The cheesy sales person came to our house, wasted 4 hours of our time with this weird science experiment (it was so abvous that is was full of illusions). He bacame upset that we did not purchase the system and was disrespectful. He accused my husband of not caring for his family enough to make the investment...how rude! He left, after we basically begun to turn off the lights in our house (it was 10:30p) and did not offer the "free" gift. This company is a fraud...beware!
RainSoft is annoying. I got phone call from them (caller ID) for almost 10 days - each time I pick up the phone - it's quiet.
Until today, some one says "hello". They mentioned about the gift reward from HOmeDepot I signed up a while ago.
Too sick of the past experience with phone calls from f..k..ing RainSoft - it turned me off. I told them - please do not call me again.
RainSoft's site looks nice - but I won't buy thier product because of the stupid phone call they made to my homephone multiple times (per day) and it's quiet .. like an automated machine.
Overall - good company or not - I don't care. For me - they're annoying and thats' my attitude toward "Rain Soft"
Oh my gosh, Rain Soft was installed in our house and the guy that installed it left a pin whole size leak.
We discovered the leak at 10:30 at night. We had major water damage. What a nightmare.
We had our insurance co. handle it.
We had wet walls and wet carpet. Rain Soft was going to come and bring their fans in. The man from Surf Pro the water damage people said. " What did they want to do?"
The Rain soft people never called and apologized for the damage.
Yea rain sift sucks my unit leaks it is WAY OVER PRICED i hope you read this before they talk you into it with there bogus sales pitch they wont even fix it without charging us. I HATE RAIN SOFT.
Our Rain Soft System has been nothing but a thorn in our side since having it installed. Top dollar for a piece of junk! Our dealer told us how wonderful it was. We do not have soft water... the unit leaks. Our last water bill was 289.00! There are only 2 of us in this house! Rain Soft SUCKS!
beware of rainsoft equipment warranty!
I am writing to warn anyone looking to invest into a Rainsoft System, which is not cheap, to beware of leaving your equipment behind if you move. I have recently moved from a home which I installed the water system and air filter system which I paid $6,000 for. I had the system installed a year and a half before I moved. The reason I did not take the system was because the home I bought also had the system. Well two months after moving into our new home there was a problem with the water system. The technician said that the system would skip two of the cycles when he tested it. Said it would cost $1200.00 to replace the face plus labor. Because I am not the original owner of this system there is no warranty, so warranty does not follow the equipment! I have spent so much money with this company and cannot believe I am having to face this issue now. Please beware of purchasing this system unless you are o.k. with there customer service. The price you will pay is not cheap!
Do not buy this product they claim if you move it can be transported they saw it has a lifetime warranty which is a lie they scammed us into a contract that costs us 12 thousand dollars which we are still paying and the softener is no good . We had to purchase another system and we tried
Calling a technician there phone number is no longer working and their offices closed in Orlando they are missing in action I heard they is a lawsuit going on anyone hear of it being so please post information since I’m still paying for a product that is broken and suppose to have a lifetime warranty
Max, you're a ### sir. There's so many other things that can make a water Softner skip cycles INCLUDING an index lever which they do not make anymore bc those systems are so out-dated. And yes, I used to work for RS. No, I'm
not affiliated with them anymore but it drives me nuts to see you sitting there filling someone's head with absolute horse [censored]. Atleast have an idea of what you're talking about before you open your mouth. And to the OP: why in the name of God would you expect RS to warranty someone else's system for YOUR lifetime? You didn't buy it...and you expect them to warranty it for YOUR lifetime? Did you also call and complain that the original purchasers warranty isn't valid on your stove when it broke? What about your refrigerator? You people drive me crazy sometimes. If you would have read your paperwork on the warranty sheet it clearly states warranties are issued to ORIGINAL PURCHASERS ONLY. Instead you just assume you're handed someone else's lifetime warranty? Let's get real here. Grow up and admit you made a mistake.
I find the post very helpful because I'm interested in buying a filtration system. Rainsoft equipment is 6, 000$ and the reverse osmosis system is not included. On top of that, you have to buy 2 different tanks (one for iron removal and one for manganese) which takes up more room in the mechanical room. Kinetico seems to be offering the same system with only one tank and says you have to replace the interior after 5 years (cost of 500$). Guarantee can be carried over or you can take the system with you. However, plumbers are not cheap and have the company to move it probably costs the same. Also, there might be new technology a less expensive price and will just as per-formant if not more (like computers and phones). Thanks for the info. MJL
Anthony...
I am awake. The Kinetico Warranty goes IS transferrable in two ways...but of course you would know that if you knew what you were talking about, right.
1. if the house is sold to a new owner, the warranty is transfered to the new owner.
2. if the original owner takes it to a new location, the warranty follows him provided the water conditions match the system.
not: to the new owner to a new location. This means warranties don't do the eBay trail.
Now, I hope that you are educated on the facts so that you needn't come back with some statement like above. Do you need documentation? I don't know any other water treatment company that offers these two aspects.
you should have transferred your old system. they tell you UP FRONT that the warranty is NOT TRANSFERRABLE, but they will allow you to move the system.
this is not a complaint against rainsoft, but against you. i could see a complaint if they refused to permit the move and did not honor the warranty.
Hey pal, the warranty is to the PURCHASER.
Why is that so hard to grasp?
If the warranty could be transferred from person to person, the unit would have to be warranted for the next million years, or until mankind died out.
Wake up, and be reasonable.
I can appreciate the problem you have with waranties that do not go very far. Whenever I see the word "lifetime" in the warranty information, RED FLAGS go up. Look for the big * and the fine print.
I have a Kinetico and the ten-year warranty is on all parts, not just some select parts. Moreover, when I take it with me to my new house (the water conditions are similar) the warranty continues. If I decided to leave it behind for the new owner, the warranty is transferred over for the remainder of the period. Pretty decent.
The new ROs work with the same deal. Even ten years on the MEMBRANE!
Andy
I disagree with what the technician was telling the customer, the reason the system was skipping the two cycles was not the control panel but a tiny microswitch behind the control panel. You have to watch technicians as they work for commission and most don't know what they are talking about, I on the other hand am a veteran Rainsoft Technician that knows what he is talking about. It is a scam, they tell you at the beginning that it comes with a lifetime warranty, but what they don't tell you is that the warranty only covers certain parts that hardly ever go bad and the others are pro rated for 5 years and you pay 10% 1st year 20% 2nd year and soforth until the 5th year which is @ 50% of the replacement parts, you really have to watch out for yourself, keep focused on what they are telling you and keep notes that is what could help you in the end any questions shot away!
My family is in the process of purchasing this system and since we are going to be paying all that money for it i asked the rep if we would be able to take it with us if we decided to leave and he informed us that we could. When and if we decide to move i will still be taking the system with me even if there is already a system installed. If someone left the system in a home and they are moving chances are there is something wrong with their system. There should have been some way for you to gain your system back since you still had a warranty for the system.
rude management!
The service I have received from the local rep has been deplorable. I have asked them to reclaim the system and refund my money many times. I have contacted the Local BBB and they have forwarded my complaint and have had no response. It took the company 9 months to install the unit and I am left with out any confidence that the unit is work properly today. The local manager is rude and has not provided any relief.
no money refund from rainsoft!
Re: RainSoft
Another month has gone by and still no one from Rain Soft / Discovery Marketing and Distributing, Inc., has called me back or made an appointment to install the system; nor has there been a refund of my
money which, after 6 months of unsuccessful installation attempts, is all I am asking for (plus the cookware and the free under-sink filter, and the repair of my irrigation system and well).
On April 10, 2006, I agreed to pay $5,000.00 for a Rain Soft water softening system, an air conditioner filter, and under-sink water filter. Refer 5 people. I did. I have not gotten the Cookware as promised. Buy one, get one free under-sink-filter - not gotten, either. FALSE advertising!
The first attempt to install the main system resulted in:
1. Broken irrigation lines, valves and wiring in 2 of 4 zones, at one location near my house.
2. Further digging in another attempt to install the unit near my house resulted in uprooting protective fencing just underground that kept puppies from digging up any wiring along the pool area. The twisted
wire fence is still exposed, with potential danger of my dogs breaking a leg, if the dozen or more rocks and stepping stones move, that I placed on the corners and on the sides.
3. On April 28, 2006, Generous Electric of Lake County installed some kind of receptacle and/or plug-in at my well pump. Either they or Discovery Marketing installers broke the hasp for opening the wooden protective covering of the pump switches and the cover for the well controls was missing, as well as no plate for the receptacle, allowing ants and wasps to build nests on my equipment and contacts. A Discovery Marketing representative was here, later that same day (such fast service) to collect their money.
4. A couple weeks after the initial installation, I noticed that my plants were dying. Within minutes after the timer started one of the 4 zones, the well kept shutting down, resulting in no water period anywhere on my property. I found that two of the 4 zones did not come on at all, and the 2 that were left were watering my acreage with softened water, as were my kennel runs that I rinse every day (reduced pressure). NOT. I asked Discovery Marketing to take the unit off my well, since I did not want to pay for salt to remove minerals as it watered my lawn and flowers and trees. Sago palms, magnolia trees, and rose bushes have either died, lost leaves, or turned brown.
A professional irrigation man came out to investigate my irrigation system problems; and since NO ONE has been near my system, except Rain Soft, it was in his professional opinion that the missing 2 zones were a result of the first day when your installers tore up my rock-yard, (covered in 8" of rock) broke the wiring on one zone, and recapped a second zone so close that the valve could not be reconnected. How could Mr. Robert Jones say the broken wires and PVC were pre-existing, when everything worked perfectly, before Rain Soft dug up my yard?
5. The under-sink filter fell off the wall, flooding my house, damaging furniture and rugs in my den, kitchen, and carpet in the adjacent dining room, and water-stain on the wooden floor under the sink. Discovery Marketing sent another installer to mount it back on the wall with longer screws. Discovery Marketing also agreed to replace the under sink floor that is water stained and warped.
After several failed attempts on the part of different installers, Discovery Marketing has not found a way, in over 6 months, to install the unit. I talked to Jason Spinney once, but although others said he was on another line, he did not return my later calls to reschedule the installation or pay the damages to my irrigation system which I had to hire someone to fix. I have repeatedly tried to talk to this man, but he was not available. After 6 months, I feel I should get my money back and damages incurred by your company. My attorney told me not to waste my time calling any more, but document the facts, give you one last chance to refund my money, or I will contact the Better Business Bureau, the TV and radio stations, and go to court to recover my losses.
Sincerely,
Joy.
$12, 000 for the system and still have to buy bottled water. Still have to buy salt and hydrogen peroxide for the system. The promise of all your soap and shampoo and detergents for life was delivered ONCE after we had asked about it for a year. Four years later I am still waiting for a second delivery. Required through customer service, apparently they are still looking into it after several months I have heard nothing from them.
So many installation problems I will not bore you with. Many, many followup problems. So many, "Oh by the way, you have to do...as maintenance.
We bought this system thinking there was much less maintenance than the system we had. LOL
All the freebies were worthless, I threw out the paperwork for them because it was only taking up space in my files.
Do Not deal with this company.

I received a phone call from someone I though was from Home Depot. They asked what time I was going to be home and I set up an appointment to have someone show up between 6-630. She showed up at 7pm. I was under the impression this was a 'water test' not a presentation. When she got there she asked to use MY cell phone to call her boss to tell her she was there. I asked the lady how long it would take and she said half an hour. Well she finally left my house at 8pm. The only reason I got her out of my house so soon was that I said I am going through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University and was looking to get rid of debt not gain more. I asked how much it would cost and she said "well, if you are spending $50 a month on soaps, cleaners and cleansers we can find you something comprable to that price". I don't spend that much money a month, I maybe spend $10. I asked her if the interest rate was and she told me that if I got a Home Depot card I could get 6 mo. no interest. I told her I already have a Lowe's card and she was like "well you can get this one too". Uh, no thanks lady. Then I told her I have to submit a request to my HOA to get anything installed outside the walls of my home and she said "well, we would install it in your crawl space, not outside" and I told her that even then I would have to get approval. She was insisting she knew how HOA's work and I had to tell her that that is not how mine works. I admit, the water from our tap looked gross but I am not willing to pay that much money for something that's just going to give me possible problems in the future. All water issues are dealt with by the HOA anyway, I don't have to do anything. She was all nice and friendly until she realized I was not buying. I also asked her why they didn't tell me it was going to take an hour and she said "what did they tell you?" I told her they told me it was a brief test and I also said I wanted to go to the gym and that's why I scheduled it so early. She's like, well you can still go. I was so frustrated. She kept saying that I needed clean water. Sorry, I have lived how many years with the water unpurified. I think I'll be ok. I do my research before I buy something this expensive. I am a single woman and I don't need to buy things I don't need and I think this product is one thing I do not need. Maybe other people do but not this girl!
Make a claim against Your homeowners insurance. Let them pay for the proper repairs and allow them to collect from the bond Rainsoft is required to maintain to do business. I wonder if they have a contractors license to do this kind of work?
I was approached several times at Home Depot about having my water tested. Finally I gave in, which was the first mistake I made. The Rainsoft salesman requested that my wife be home for the sales presentation. After the presentation I was offered a unit at an extremely high price. ($6500.00) We told him that it was WAY out of our price range. I know our water is bad, but i never thought it would cost this much to purify it. The salesman threw in (free) coupons for all sorts of things and soaps and explained how this 6500 dollar investment would actually pay off quickly in food savings and clothing and pipes and so forth and so on. He then made a calculation and told us that we could pay on (installments) of $168/mth. My wife looked at me and said, i think we can afford that. So we told the salesman we would take the system. We very quickly signed some paperwork, and he took personal information that I assumed was so that the company could run a credit check or something in that nature to assure i would be able to repay the amount over the period of time.
PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW! IT WILL SAVE YOU!
I couldn't sleep for two nights and finally i called the company and i told them i couldn't afford the system. $6500 is just too much. The sales rep not quoting him, told me in so many words, questioned whether i was concerned about the health of my family. He hard sold me on a unit that would cost $4800 and the payments would be 124/mth, which i thought was still very expensive, but reasonable. I thought i could swing that.
When the installer came that day, he did not bring the less expensive (mechanical) unit, he only brought the $6500 unit, probably betting i would not notice and then refuse to change it out once it was installed. They had someone bring over the $4800 unit with the addendum to the original (contract). He installed the unit and i asked him if he had the contract or any financial paperwork, because i have not seen one thing since the salesman was here. He told me i should contact A+B marketing and then will send that stuff over. The QA rep would be here in 3 days (go figure).
So the QA rep calls me to schedule an appointment to test my water to assure the system is working properly. I told him that i need him to bring the financial papers and contract with him, because i still have not seen what i was supposed to pay and when and how. You get it? He tells me, " you haven't seen what your paying or any other paperwork?" Anyway, after he does a water test on his own company's system, he tells me my water is great! (Go figure). He then gives me the "Americana 3" coupon packet, which they claimed would save me all kinds of money... Two problems, its all saving on total garbage that i would never buy, and the process in which you receive your money, or rebate is so arduous, it would be a waste of time sitting in front of a (fax) machine sending who knows what to who knows who. I told the QA rep this, and he tells me, yea, its basically made that way so it hard to do, so people don't even bother. (Good thing he's not in sales!) He may be the only honest guy working there. Poor guy has to go to people's homes and deal with what i would imagine victim after victim. After asking him, he slides me the financial paperwork and i see the cost of the unit, $4800.00 @ 18% interest, with a finance charge of $2560.00. I just about lost it. I told the guy that i didn't ever agree to this. I don't even have credit cards, my wife and i pay everything in cash, even our cars, so what makes you think i would ever agree to pay an 18% interest rate on a water filter? I told him to call his company and tell them I want to cancel the system and they can come and take it back and some other poor sucker can have it installed in his house. The QA guy leaves and i'm on my way to Home Depot to talk to the manager. I told him the situation and he assured me that Home Depot would take the hit if this not pan out. They have had problems with outsourcing in the past. I told him this company has predatory solicitors in their store and i'm suprised Home Depot hadn't done more research. I left feeling better, as i like Home Depot. It is a great store, and if they can help me through this nightmare, i will only have more great things to say about them and I will obviously continue to shop there.
I never received a call from A+B marketing, so I called them. I talked to the same hard selling salesman that dogged me into the unit I actually folded on. I was on the phone with him for a good hour debating about this, while he continued to try to convince me that i needed this product. I definitely insulted his company and he was quite upset, as i am quite upset that they are going around trying to swindle money out of people's pockets. So now i'm paying almost $7, 700 for thing with a 52% interest charge! So if you break that down, i'm overpaying for the unit, plus, i'm buying soap and coupons on a high interest credit card! I'm getting 10% off Uncle Bens rice at 18% interest! WTF! I'm buying laundry detergent on 18% credit! Oh yea, i almost forgot, its "all natural". Anyway, he told me he would talk to the owner and do some research into what happened and talk to the sales rep. I told the guy, really, think about it. 3 days after the install, after finally seeing paperwork and financial documentation, i want to cancel, and not before? What does he think i did, bottle up a thousand gallons of Rainsoft water and sell it all for profit? Now i want to swindle them by returning the unit? Come on! He tells me he will call me back within 20 minutes.
An hour later, the same sleezeball sales rep actually returns my call and tells me that i did sign something having to do with getting credit and so forth. No *&^% I did, what company would put anyone on an installment plan without first checking to see if I could actually pay down the unit? Of course i signed that stuff. The only catch, and he admitted it, was that there is no paperwork saying anything about 18% interest, nor did the salesman mention it, and the 60 months they claim i agreed to, was the 60 months they told me they would give me the super soaps. I never signed any agreement stating that i would pay a finance charge of 52% of the cost of the unit or 18% on anything. He tells me that that owner doesn't want to remove the filter because it is considered used... Wait a minute, this thing is teh Rolls Royce of water filters with a Lifetime Guarantee, what is 3 days of minimal use going to do? You have got to be kidding me!
Now i am waiting to hear from them and i will post the outcome of that. I told the manager of Home Depot that if they can help me get rid of this curse, i will buy a system from them that same day. I hope Home depot pulls through. Thanks for reading this post. i trusted this company because they were sourced out by one of the most reputable companies in the world. Do not get tied up in this nightmare like i did. I am not a water expert, so i can't really speak for the actual legitimacy of the water filter itself, but i will say this: Stay away from these guys... They are predators and they target you and your consideration for your family's well being. Look at all of these other complaints on the internet and customer reviews from other sites... These people don't practice business like Americans. They practice business like Arabs. The reason people all over the world want to do business with the US is because we honor the deal. When we shake hands, that's it, people fell good about there experience and the product and service they're getting, and the provider should feel like he's made a fair and reasonable profit for his risk and hard work. This is not an example of this. These people, Rainsoft, A+B Marketing, etc., are doing what ever they can to make a buck in these poor economic times, even if that means dogging you and leaving you out to dry, like they are trying to do to me and my neighbor. Don't allow them to ruin America's reputation and your financial status.
We had rain soft installed when we purchased our home 2 years ago. We were excited to hear that the shower door would not have water spots and that the calcium buildup around the sinks would not be there let alone the rings in the toilets. Well, the shower door has terrible water spots that CLR won't even remove. I am a clean freak so it's not due to not cleaning the doors. I have had to use a form of sand paper to get the rings out of the toilets and there is calcium around the faucets. We called rain soft to ask them to come and test the water again. Of course it was time for a service and they would not come unless we wanted the service for $80.00. My boyfriend told them then come get the system it has not done what was promised. They told us to basically it was to bad, there was nothing they could do. I will NEVER trust Rain Soft or purchase from them again due to the rudeness on the phone and their lack of even wanting to try to help. I don't think it was to much to ask them to come test the water in the Kitchen and bathrooms, but no, not unless we were going to pay the service fee. Oh not to mention the one under the sink already has a huge leak and they will not come repair it unless we pay the service fee. We have not used it for about 1.5 years but my God, we have to pay the bill. I am one discouraged owner. If they would have just sent someone out to test the water, assured me that it was working properly I would have not had a problem having them come back to provide the service. I would have trusted them and their product . There is no customer service or satisfaction in our area.
A very disappointed customer that's not afraid to sign her name. Christene Brown in Porterville California.
My husband and I bought the rainsoft system 3 years ago and have had nothing but problems, we have had them out several times, and the system will work for a month or 2 then something else goes wrong. Every time they come out they want to blame uis for the problem. we were told this thing would be just about maintance free, HA HA, we are contantly adding bleach, salt and draining etc...NOT to mention they charge 100.00 everytime they come out and we can't afford it because we are still paying on this stupid thing. we are not rich but because of the storms we had a few years ago our well water turned dark and had a bad smell and taste, it also stained our clothes. we had to do something..they told us all kinds of promises and told us (which is why we were sold on the product) that it was guaranteed for LIFE. BULLSH! this thing is nothing but a NIGHTMARE!BEWARE DO NOT BUY THIS SYSTEM if your not happy you have no way out, , , THE FINANCE papers you sign put your home up as collateral, we did not know this it did not stte this in contract, its the type of form they use that automatically allows them to attach to your home. YOU ARE SKREWED if you try to withhold payment.
Please... If you email comments@rainsoft.com also comment here. Do not just send a comment to RainSoft. They are horrendus (just like the spelling). I just called to cancel the next morning and was transferred around. Finally I got a call back from the area manager on his cellphone while he was driving. What if I can get you a used one, ours has 1 inch pipes. yadda yadda... Aweful.
Funny, a previous poster mentioned the call to the boss for america rewards. Same here! They even use your phone to make calls when they have cells in their car. Guess it's to record caller id and location data. I have a local guy here installing a Clack WC-1 48k for $900. Way better than rainsoft and any person I call can service it. I can even get parts online and do it myself.

I just moved into a new house, and all I did was fill out a Walgreen's survey card stating we would get a $25.00 gift certificate to Walgreen's for filling out the survey. So, I filled it out and sent it in. We then got a call saying that we had to let someone come in and test our water (No mention whatsoever of the Rainsoft Company). They made it sound like they were just gathering data. My husband got the call or else I would have told them no. Anyway, we were told it would take about an hour and that we both needed to be home because they had had problems in the past with testers being physically assaulted by husbands or some dumb crap. So the guy showed up a half hour late, however he did call and tell us he was running late. You could tell right away it was a sales pitch, but we let him go on about his testing, etc. He did come off as fairly funny and fun, still a salesman, but it wasn't completely boring. That is, of course, until the demo was over and the money talk started. He gave us the initial price and we said, no way, then he said, "Well with this special program...", we still declined. He then started talking about the soaps etc. etc. At this point it was well into 2hrs.(only supposed to be 1) and we DID have somewhere we needed to go before we put our daughter to bed. We apologized for cutting him short but that we really needed to have left an hour ago and we were just not interested. At this point the said, "What if I had a system in my car?". I had to step in at this point, because my husband was obviously ready to hurt the man. He finally left, but I was VERY VERY unhappy with the experience, especially because I NEVER signed up for a sales pitch or a 2hr. jerk-off show! Regardless of how the system works or doesn't work. Any company that would put people like that out to sell their products doesn't deserve my business. I can't imagine that this guy was just a bad apple. He seemed VERY well trained in how to make you feel bad about the fact that you are giving your children bad water, stupid for wasting money and down right rude when you did not wat to purchase a $10, 000 item which is obviously marked up 6500%
Rainsoft is a total scam. I wish I would have researched them better before I purchased. The only people I have heard say positive things about them work for them. I do not know a person with one of thier products that does not have a horror story. My unit only worked for a few years then it stopped cleaning itself. I called the dealer that sold me the unit and was basically told that the "Lifetime Warrenty" that thier salesmen go on about is totally worthless. "Warrenty" repair is $80 an hour plus parts! How is that a warrenty? You pay top dollar thinking you will be taken care of, but you get shafted in the end. I found this site looking for information on how to repair mine myself (diagrams, something) as I am sick of dealing with Rainsoft trying to get them to honor thier warrenty. I know I can get a lawyer, sue them and win but I would pay more for the lawyers than the filter is worth. I am sure thier whole business model revolves around everyone thinking the same way I do. Any law firms out there interested in a class action lawsuit? I would certainly sign up and from what my friend Mr. Google is telling me, so would a lot of others.

I just had the same exact issue to a T! Wow… they are still getting away with this! I can’t believe Home Depot sells this company to people!
I love my RainSoft system. It is the best water filter in the world. I love drinking clean water. I love bathing in clean water. I love washing my clothes in clean water. It has helped keep my home and appliances in good condition. My friends and family also have RainSoft in their homes and they all love it too. The free soaps have saved me way more than the cost of the RainSoft system.
I feel sorry for all of the people who turned a positive life changing experience into a negative.
Just so you all know you are paying $5000.00 for a $1000.00 worth of equipment( minus install). A basic wates sofener starts at $529.00. The rest is PROFIT. A good system should cost $1500.00 or less and yes the tanks need to regenerated about every 3 to 6 yrs. Buy from a local plumber supplyer and use a trusted plumber to do the generally easy install.
As with many of you, I was almost suckered into buying an overpriced "luxury" equipment that we didn't really need.
This is my story:
I bought a brand new house, built March 2010. 2 weeks upon moving in (March 23 was move in date), I get a ring of the doorbell. Who is it? I wonder...Oh, it's a young man with a shirt that reads "Rainsoft." I'm thinking, as with all other door guys we have run into since I purchased the house, "I don't want your service, whatever it is." He proceeds and tells me that they are doing a free water test for all residents in my neighborhood and that the test will take no longer than 30 minutes, give or take depending on the amount of questions that was asked. I asked him what the hardness level of the water was in my neighborhood, since they did run the tests on multiple houses around me already. He wouldn't tell me - said that I'd need the water professional (who just happens to be his dad) to run the test and tell me himself. He also threw in a $25 gift certificate to Home Depot. My fiancee was drawn to the gift certificate so we agreed.
On the appointment date, my fiancee was at work. The "professional" told me that she must be home in order for us to get the gift certificate. I asked why and his response was that someone's husband murdered his wife for purchasing a system without his knowledge. Wow! I assured him that I wouldn't get murdered if I did decide to purchase, but he insisted that she was home anyway. I cleared my schedule for the presentation, which he was already late to.
Anywho, the next appointment, we were both home. He went through his normal presentation. I was actually surprised at how "dirty" my water was. Well, it wasn't actually dirty, the sales man just told me that it was dirty, and had the tests to prove it. Yeah, right...Half way into the presentation, I looked at the clock, as I was getting hungry. The presentation started at 6:30 and didn't end until about 10pm. My fiancee, was very impressed. I wanted to test his "holy" water with some of our detergents, but he wouldn't let me. Gee, I wonder why? Was the experiment rigged? If he was so confident about his water, why didn't he let me perform my own small experiment right? Well, anyways, I then decide to turn on my computer. He suddenly stopped what he was doing and asked my fiancee, "what is he doing?" And she told him, he's probably going to check out Rainsoft reviews to make sure you guys are the real deal before buying. He got offended, and so I didn't check it. If his product was so superior, what would he be so afraid of? Got me really thinking. My fiancee eventually signed on the dotted line. We were promised that if we could find another product for cheaper that does exactly what Rainsoft does, they would drop the price. Finally, after signing everything, he leaves my house. I had dinner at 10:30pm (I usually eat before 7pm...).
I have been busy at work, but decided to read my contract - 3 days after transaction to cancel. Hmmmmm...the sales guy didn't tell us this. Good thing I read this before on the second night going onto the third day as I would be in a ride that I didn't want to take. I proceed to go online and do some research and low and behold, I see all these negative reviews about this company, their sales tactics, their inability to explain to you the hidden fees involved with maintaining the system, which we were told is basically maintenance free, and a whole slew of negatives about Rainsoft.
My fiancee was still excited to finally be able to get soft water into our house. I, however, did not like the idea that I was going to be stuck with a lemon for the life of my home. I call the sales guy and told him to stop the delivery/installation guy. The sales guy had the audacity to tell me "Man, you are killing me [chuckles]...I'm going to lose 300 bucks." I tell him "wait a minute, you care more about your commission than my inability to pay for the piece of [censor] equipment that you hard sold me and my fiancee? Cancel it! I could care less that you didn't make your commission." I was going to lose $7000 and he was worried about a $300 commission. All I can say is wow, these guys are really from a different planet. They really are commission hungry. I'm sure he would've gotten such a bigger commission than just $300 bucks, but I wasn't going to go on his guilt trip.
An hour later, I got a call from the Fresno, CA B&D district manager, who through many phone calls, I got to discount the price of the whole home system for $3500. He wouldn't go lower, so I didn't go with it. I didn't want to deal with the headache of yearly service calls, which the sales guy totally left out of his presentation. Thanks to all the reviews I have read, I'm glad I did not throw away my money into a piece of crap system.
There is one positive thing I have to say about Rainsoft, however. They did open my eyes to why water stains my appliances. So after this ordeal, I still wanted a softener, but one from a more reputable company. I eventually called the local Kinetico company after doing a lot of research.
All in all, I learned a lot. I hope you all do some research before buying into Rainsoft. There are a lot of good softeners out there. I do have the money to spend, so I went with Kinetico, which is also on the expensive side (got my dechlorinator and Mach 2040 for $2500 installed), but there are also some less expensive, highly reputable softeners as well. Good luck all :)
Hello Florida Resident,
I wished that I would have looked at your comment before tonight. Because Home Depot and Rain soft are still running this scam on people. I to was promised a gift card and the sales person didn't know anything about it. Thank goodness my wife and I didn't buy this scam. This is worse then the old days with the snake oil sales men. The sales man was talking to us like we were to little kids and we had to buy it right now. At $7000.00 I'm not making that decision tonight but he wouldn't take no for an answer. I don't buy anything without looking into it first . But he showed us pictures of people in our area I don't think they were. But now Rain Soft has my information I just hope they don't bug us. But after 2.5 hours we got him to leave. I can't believe that Home Depot supports this kind of company that sells product thats doesn't work. But thats my opinion after reading complains about this company.
First of all, I am absolutely disappointed that Home Depot would request that its customers sign up for a chance to win a shopping spree only to submit our personal information to companies whom they have partnered with to build their companies. Secondly, a Rainsoft representive contacted me stating that I was the winner of a $20.00 gift certificate at Home Depot, Macaronni Grill, or Chilli's. However, I was informed that in order to receive the gift, I would need to allow Rainsoft to conduct an in-home demonstration regarding their home filtration system. Although the representative presentation was well presented and informative, I was told that the presentation would last about 30 minutes. A 30 minute presentation lasted over 2 hours. In my opinion, Home Depot and Rainsoft started this process of being deceitful to its customers. I am so happy that I visited this site because the salesperson failed to inform my family during the presentation regarding the maintenance and cost to maintain this home filtration system. I was not informed about the salt that needed to be added periodically. And, I am happy to know that their service contract is not honorble. Since Home Depot felt the need to endorse this company, let them provide the service contractual agreement as they do their appliances. Finally, the Rainsoft represenative made me feel that I had the worse water. His presentation allowed me to question whether Talquin Electric Cooperation is supplying my family with adequate water supply. Finally, I thought that when I purchased my new Whirlpool Refrigerator with the filtering system, I was getting excellent water. However, according to Rainsoft, the water is still bad water. In other words, if you are not using their home filtration system, you are not drinking good water. Finally, at the end of the presentation, I was informed that I will receive my gift card in the mail. This is unacceptable because if I am willing to allow a stranger into my home and was promised a gift certificate, I should have received it at the end of the presentation to say the least. My recommendation to all future customers is to be proactive and inform any company who ask to come into your home to show a business card and do not make a decision on large purchases abruptly.
We were totally took by this company as well. High pressure sales which we stupidly bought in to. Asked if we could afford $34 a month for payments. Said we could and suddenly before the guy left I was paying $84 a month. Told it would be paid for in 4 years. 2 years into it and we hadn't made a dent. Figuring roughly the payment and interest the 4 years and we should have had it paid for was really more like 12 years! Don't even get me started on filters and other service. The first year they call say its time to change the filters $56 if they send and we do ourselves. They sent instructions alright I just needed an engineering degree to take it apart and do it. Charged me another $100 to have someone come do it. Not paying $150/year to change filters. Thing hasn't worked for awhile either. Called once, they came and said it was fine. Gee then why doesn't it use salt anymore then?
i purchased rainsoft in 1998 its paid off, but im getting calls from two different company's, they supposily sold to a different company, and both are saying they are the original company, im so confused and im thinking about not letting either one come back does anyone know anything about this?
So, when you purchase a car with a 4 year, 60, 000 mile warranty, you don't expect to pay for oil changes? RainSoft systems are made in a state-of-the-art facility in Chicago, not by God.
You need to add salt to the brine tank (with any manufacturer's system), filters required changing (that's why they're called filters), and any mechanical component is subject to wear and tear, and potential failure requiring replacement.
Yes, but the Rainco person came to my house yesterday and said all of that maintenance was covered under the warranty and the system didn't use salt (after I saw the word brine), which I thought was very confusing.
And there were no filters to change, no maintenance to do, and if there were, they would take care of it.
NOT. Thank goodness I didn't sign up.
i nicholas hammond agree dealer said i was in 5 year 141 plan but interst don, t match called dealer they inform me i was in program a needed not worry that is deal they have with amercian finco. amercian finco then jumped my daliy percentage rate. i have drain my saving and send all extra money i can and have sent over4000 dollars on a 7000 dollar system and still have a 4000 dollar owe and only had system 6 months
