I recently applied via Indeed and the GI Group for a HGV Class 1 trunking position at DPD Durham Depot. My experiance was shocking, dissapointing, stressfull and not what I would expect from such a high profile company. I have to say I had absolutely no issues with the guys at GI Group.
I applied online on Indeed and was quickly contacted by the GI Group. Completed online registration and was asked to pop into DPD Durham to download my digi card. This was to check on infringements to decide if I needed a driver assesement or just an induction. I was asked to pop in and do an induction after I completed all tests and bridge strike online course. I was met by Jonny who was very pleasent, showed me a DPD video and was asked to provide proof that my type 2 diabetes existed, but nothing was mentioned about DVLA proof. I gave a full screenshot of my medication, I have never had a hypo attack in 7 years and the diabetis is controlled by tablet and diet only.
I was then told before I could start that I had to go down to DPD Hinkley hub with a driver, do another induction and then I could commence shifts. I arrived at Hinkley and saw Jason who said he needed evidence in the form of an email from DVLA that I had declared my diabetes to them. He said email would be fine and I could probably start work in a couple of days. Non of this was mentioned in the Indeed advert. I called DVLA and they kindly sent me a letter saying my fitness to drive had recently been assesed during my bus lisence full medical and I was fine to drive a HGV or bus. I also explained that I had no choice but to disclose as my Doctor had to tell DVLA 3 months ago, 4 years ago and 8 years ago during medicals for lisence renewals. DPD then said they wanted me to call DVLA and give my verbal consent for DPD complience to call them and check if I had disclosed my type 2 diabetes. So they were basically saying that they did not belive me, my DVLA letter or both.
Why ask for written confirmation in the first place if they were insisting on calling DVLA?
Had I known this from the outset I would not of bothered to be honest. With my experiance I have no issue finding the 3 HGV shifts a week that I want. You also have to ask yourself do I really want to work for a company that make you call up, get a code to stop for 15 mins for a toilet break. I also understand that there are certain shunters who like to grass drivers up for minor mistakes and get them sacked.
I would like to say cheers for the £170.00 pay for taking a trip down to your hub as a passanger, having a wander around the yard with a manager, having a cost price fish & chips with curry sauce, seperate bowl of scampi with tartare sauce, apple pie and custard and a mocha in your canteen then sleeping all the way back to Durham!
