We live in Southwest Michigan where Consumers energy is our only option for power. Our electric bill has always been a bit on the high side, ranging from mid $200 to mid $300. This has been pretty consistent since we moved in three years ago.
Now suddenly our bill shoots up over $200 in the summer. Last summer they blamed the heat except that we use and ECOBEE thermostat and I can tell them exactly how much more or less we use our A/C and it simply didn't match up.
They charged us an additional $211 for "distribution" with no explanation as to why that was so much higher. In addition, we have been actively cutting power usage all over the home (all low draw dimmable LED bulbs, turning off anything not in active use, setting A/C to only run when we are at home and setting the temp very broadly (78 high - 65 low)) and yet our bill has only gone up. I have wattage meters I use and battery backups for electronics in my office that read my usage.
They tried telling us that a sudden $200+ increase on our power bill is normal for summer rates and that is insane. The last two months have been $350 (still too high) and then suddenly $600 with no major changes? I am absolutely certain they are wrong on our usage and we are gathering data on our readings at the meter vs their reporting.
Desired outcome: We need our usage re-evaluated and a more satisfactory answer. This is unreasonable. I want better, more accurate reporting and some kind of financial recourse for this.
