My car broke down and I needed a way home. I took Uber to the Airport in White Plains NY. I went to the Avis counter and asked for a one-way rental to south Jersey Philadelphia area. It was late at night. He wrote up the order and when I asked where in south Jersey or Philadelphia I should return the car, he told me I could return it to any Avis down here.
When I called Avis this morning to find the best location to return it, they told me i had to return it to Newark North Jersey or pay an extra $180.
I read the fine print on the receipt that I hadn't noticed and it did say Newark. I took the original agent at his word and did not read the fine print. In the call, I mentioned that Newark was not much farther than where we rented the car and did not represent a one-way rental. I also mentioned that when I rented cars in Philadelphia, I often got a car from as far as California. Avis supervisors were no help and were happy to screw us.
