Aspen Dental Outrages costs

I went to a dentist in my area, who told me I had gum disease, but after the xrays found out he was not in network, so I searched around (online) found out aspen dental was. Well for scaling, they wanted 1200 $ out of pocket for quads, complete mouth. So I called back the out of network dr, he wanted 900$ total mouth now my insurance pays 50/50 meaning out of pocket will be 450$ what a save... they are rude, receptionist is very rude!

I believe Aspen Dental is a complete RIP OFF. They suck you in with FREE exams and x-rays, please don't fall for this phony baloney. I went there not more than a year ago, and Aspen Dental ruined my teeth. Aspen Dental is too expensive and they work too fast. When you are there, Aspen Dental tries to sell you everything but the kitchen sink. Then Aspen Dental offers a CareCredit type baloney; which will really get you into trouble. I emailed all my friends and relatives and anytime anyone anywhere starts talking about dentists, I bring up Aspen Dental. They did trifling work on me. The root canal which I believe now was unncessary really screw my teeth up. Then the phoney tooth Aspen Dental made was too long, way off the color of my other teeth and my tooth hurts. I will be very careful in locating another dentist, a real one that cares about their patients instead how much money they can screw them out of. So please beware of ASPEN DENTAL DENTISTS; ESPECIALLY IN THE SHADYSIDE AREA.

Please, I beg of you DO NOT make dental treatment decisions based on price alone. I have worked in the dental field (management) for 19 years, the last 12 with the same provider and have seen patients make this same mistake over and over. First of all perio disease is a VERY serious disease which has been linked to heart disease, the ability to manage blood sugar in diabetics, premature births among other illnesses. Scaling/Root planing is a procedure to TREAT a DISEASE. It is NOT a cleaning. It involves special instumentation, medication (for some situations) and the removal of bacteria below the gumline. Perio Disease is a BACTERIAL INFECTION. My office (Michigan) charges $191 per quadrant for this treatment. This price does not include the xrays which a REQUIRED to make a diagnosis or the Dr. exam. The ADA (American Dental Association) defines active perio disease as the patient showing 1.Bone loss 2. bleeding upon probing. 3. Pocket depths of 4mm or more in three + teeth in each quad. There is NO CURE for this DISEASE. Scaling/Root planing can HALT the advance of more damage, in effect putting the disease in remission. You will NEVER have a regular cleaning again. You will have Periodontal Maintenance which will be cleaning the teeth above the gum line and also going below the gum line to remove any plaque, debris, etc. that has accumulated in YOUR pockets since the last visit. Without proper HOME care on YOUR part, the disease can become active again and may require retreatment. You simply cannot price shop for this care. You get what you pay for in dentistry and you must be informed and ask questions. Using a rotodent type electric toothbrush is a must to help keep your disease under control Oral Rinses are important to treating this disease and special toothpaste (RX) is also used for most patients. My office also prescribes a low dose antibiotic to be taken orally for 9 months during and after treatment to treat the bacterial infection. This drug is called doxycycline. Please reevaluate your treatment mindset away from the money and focus on your health long term. Just because a dds is in private practice does not guarantee he/she is better than a chain DDS. I've seen some very sad/scary results from other dds in private practice. I've also seen some DDS not want to treat or advise patients on their perio status because they're afraid they'll lose that patient because of the cost associated. This is malpractice and called managed neglect. It saves the patient money, however, leaves them open to toothloss, heart problems, etc... Do you want your MD to treat you like this?

Aspen Dental Charging my account for services that haven't been rendered and were canceled the next day

I went there for my daughter to have here teeth looked at. After the free x-ray and consultation, they said she needed two fillings and a cleaning and was also told that she needed to see an orthodontist. When I was being told what had to be done, they knew I didn't have insurance so they set me up on one of their payment plans. It was a 60% - 40% plan. I set up two appts. which were scheduled for July 1st and July 8th. I went there on June 3rd. They made me leave a check of 360.oo that day. I did, thinking they would hold onto it until her first appt. on July 1st. The next morning I called to cancel the appts. so that we could get the orthodontic part done first and they had already submitted my check electronically. So now I was out 360.00 for services that weren't even rendered. It took them 7 days to clear my check and now I'm being told that it could take up to 3-4 weeks to credit back my acct. How come it can take them less time to cash my check but longer to refund my money?

Yes, their billing practices and payment arrangement practices are questionable. However, doctors and dentists provide treatment and often do not get paid.

I don't condone the way these offices handle their patients though. In my opinion, and possibly in the eyes of the law, they should not be able to bill 100% in full, your services prior to treatment in case the services cannot be finished or you do not mesh with the dentist during care.

You are entitled to your refunds and in a timely manner. 30 days is to allow any checks etc to clear. However, why it takes 30-60 days to refund someone when it takes 30 seconds to charge them is far beyond me.

I truly believe that practice is in hopes a consumer will give up.

At most, they should only be allowed to charge one third of the fees for services done prior to beginning the procedure. 1/3 when the procedures are ongoing and 1/3 at the end of services.

FILE COMPLAINTS UNTIL SOMEONE GETS TIRED OF HEARING THEM AND DOES SOMETHING. DO NOT LET THIS GO!

The same incident happened to me from Aspen Dental. They used my credit card, and now they're informing me that it will take up to two weeks to refund the money. I've decided to just file a billing dispute with my bank instead of waiting for them to further scam me. This company is one the shadiest dental practices, absolutely illegitimate.

Aspen Dental Scammed by aspen dental

Last month (May, 2008) I sent a complaint to Better Business Bureau, Inc. about Aspen Dental in Wilkes-Barre, PA. In a response to my complaint, Aspen Dental only explained why they had to take the whole amount of $1512 in advance. As a big company, I tried to understand their policy to have the patient’s financial responsibility for services treatment planned paid in full up front. I also tried to understand why it took them over one month to refund $1084.50 to my Care Credit Card.
Unfortunately, I don’t feel like my complaint has been adjusted yet. Here are 4 reasons why I feel that way:

1. Aspen Dental sold me a tooth brush for $135 and a tooth paste (Flu 1.1 Neutral Sod Gel) for $24 that I would never buy if I knew the prices for them in advance. On my first visit I asked Aspen Dental for detailed bill information that they avoided to give me. On the second visit I insisted to get detailed information. The girl from the front desk didn’t really want to give me anything and after I almost got angry, she went to the office of the financial associate and finally came back with the details I’d been asking for since day one. When I finally realized the scamming, it was too late and I already had paid for the tooth brush and the tooth paste and I wasn’t able to return them for a refund.

2. Aspen Dental said that I had a perio infection. When I went for a second opinion to Jeffrey Walker DMD, he told me I did not have a perio infection. Aspen Dental charged me and didn’t refund $24 for Periocheck Rinse for that infection. They also charged me and didn’t refund $35 for Irrigate W/Chlorhex Full (I am not really sure what that means, but regarding the information I got from my insurance company Delta Dental, this amount of money is taken for something that is named as Unspec Rerio, so I am guessing it is connected with the perio infection). Two of their dentists told me that Listerine is not good and I shouldn’t use it.

3. Aspen Dental charged me for cleaning which happened to be Full Mouth Debridement for $149, which the insurance doesn’t cover... I tried to learn more about it in Google and from what I read, there was nothing of what I felt that doctor had done in my mouth. The second opinion by Jeffrey Walker DMD was that it didn’t look like Aspen Dental did cleaning. His exact words were that there was stuff all over the place. That is why I believe I should get a refund of $149 for the Full Mouth Debridement.

4. Every time when I ate I had to clean food out of one of my teeth, which bothered me a lot and I asked Dr. Jeffrey Walker to fix it. It happened that this tooth was tooth 12 – one of the two teeth that Aspen Dental worked on. Well, they didn’t work very well for me, so I wasn’t surprised that I had problems with one of the two fillings they did. But I was surprised that my insurance company didn’t cover anything of the bill for this tooth, because they already had paid Aspen Dental for it. I felt hurt again because of Aspen Dental. Yes, they got my money for even work they never did. They got my money and Delta Dental’s money for bad work they did. That is why I feel that they should refund me and the Insurance Company Delta Dental for tooth 12.

These are the four main reasons for my complaint about Aspen Dental.

Aspen Dental is ripping people off. They charged me $276.00 for simple loose tooth extract...

Stay away from this place. Instead, try to find an honest dentist.

I too feel scammed by Aspen Dental. Over charged on products such as water pic. Could have gotten it $20 cheaper at Walmart. Then there's the mouth rinse, doubled the price from what I found online. Tooth paste with high fluoride (I am cautious about using fluoride since, technically it's a poison), again overpriced from what I found online. Plus if they had written a prescription I could have gotten some of it paid by my insurance. I thought I had a mouth full of cavities since they said I needed these products. I had NO cavities. I tried to return the water pic and they refused to take it back. It was never even opened, I only had it three days. Yes, and there's the loan they set me up for. They made a list of what I needed, cleaning and root canal - which I knew I needed. I wanted to pay upfront for the cleaning but they used the loan money. Plus took the money out for the root canal which I never made an appointment for. Now I want to go back to my old dentist (had problems getting an appointment which is why I changed) but need to get my money back. I called the loan company and they said they should not have taken the root canal money out and need to refund it so I can close out the account. I liked the people at Aspen Dental but do not like their business practices.

My Aspen Dental experience is one of "presenting" themselves as "in network" by their acceptance of my insurance, by presenting me with a printed document showing that my care would be treated "in network", and I found out it was not true. I received a "plan", in detail the work that was needed after my initial visit. I presented my self as having a particular insurance plan with an extremely good benefit for me. I had called the insurance carrier to see if the Aspen Dental I wanted to go to was "in network" and they confirmed that the office was. I didn't ask if the dentists were in network. The detail plan was presented to me as if they were "in network" showing the initial fee, if there were coupon discounts, estimated insurance discounts, estimated insurance benefits and patient responsibility. The estimated insurance discount column is the discount the dentists agree to with the insurance provider to provide my care. I accidently found out that dentists were "out of network" and the hygienist billings follow the doctor they assist. That meant my care would be provided "out of network". If "in network" I would pay only the "patient responsibility", for the procedures being done during that visit. If "out of network" I would have to pay the full fee and after the billings are sent to the insurance and Aspen is paid, I would get a refund from Aspen. I had one visit before I found out all of this, and my payment was treated as if the dentist was "in network". It was after that I found they were all out of network, and I would be owing Aspen more money after the billing process was completed. I called to talk to the finance manager about the fact they presented the plan/dentists/hygienist as in network when in reality they are not. I asked the finance manager what the clinic was going to do about this discrepancy to correct their error. They refused to do anything and I asked if they would find me an in network dentist in the vicinity. They also refused that. Their plan also included the electric tooth brush and special pastes to push their sales. I have since pulled myself from Aspen Clinic completely and have obtained an appointment with a dentist I used years ago who I know is reputable. This is truly a case of misrepresenting themselves and not caring when it was brought to their attention that they were in error.

Same here in Tucson office: Aspen Dental tried to charge me a tooth brush for $135, and tooth past for $34. After reviewing my out of pocket $332 estimate, it happens that the only service I really needed was a filing at $59. This is really bad practice

OMG this place in Tampa FL on North Dale Mabry is terrible. They too rip you off and try to charge tons of extra stuff. I got out when I could and am so glad. They charge up front and then when you say you don't want something they already charged you for, they refuse to. They all act like something is up, you can tell, it's like they are told to upcharge or ELSE. When is this place going to be checked on or held accountable?

Aspen Dental is ripping people off. I work for a Health Insurer and they happen to be our dentist. We only have 2 choices in the Reading area with my insurance. My company offers a cost estimator so you can see what the insurance will cover and what your out of pocket is to be. They gave us a list of what our out of pocket and ins. cov. would be for my spouses nightguard which took them 3 times to get it correct. The lab kept making 1 upper. Who does that for a nightguard? I thought the cost was high and submitted to treatment estimator and it was high. I should have paid 124.22. Aspen said my ins. would deny so that is why they want up front. I thought what? Who are you to say that? Well it was their exp. I thought ok I have worked for my insurance co. 10yrs so whatever. You agree to accept ins. therefore you do the work. If you don't want the work then don't accept and do cash/credit only. So the claim was denied and they would not appeal. I appealed and it was approved. Then I get a refund from Aspen for the amount I paid over. It was like $205 or something. Well here is the kicker. I found out from an ex Aspen employee the reason they use their little cost est. tool and then make you pay up front when all services done is cuz it goes into this little interest bearing account which BTW almost every provider, doctor, dental, eye has and they collect int on your money while you are going back and forth between the service you recd to the claim being processed to the claim being denied to the claim being appealed to the claim finally being paid to your refund. 3 mths passed when I got my refund and that is 3 mths worth of interest Aspen collected on MY MONEY. So I have learned that when we get any service from them or anyone for that matter, USE THE COST EST. TOOL. If your insurer offers one use it. It you are unsure of the estimate and have no tool call your insurer. Get the procedure codes from the provider, they have to supply them and what they are doing to you. Sometimes their service codes don't match what your insurer has loaded so descriptions are important. Then have your insurer tell you what they will pay and what your out of pocket is and have your insurer email, fax, mail you the their cost estimator. Then you take that to the provider and say this is what my ins. says it will cost me and demand to pay that. I do that with Aspen now and have saved so much upfront it is amazing. And they still get paid but they are no longer overcharging me and collecting interest on me. It is all buyer beware or consumer beware and you really have to watch out for yourself cuz no one else is. I could write a book about the scam the vision at Walmart has pulled and since my spouse also works for the same insurer I do he contacted the director that governs our contract between our ins. and Walmart and laid down some serious laws. If this provider scams 1 more person he will lose his license to practice. On top of that the provider at the vision center sent us a Walmart giftcard. The downside is we work for the ins co. If they are scamming me then what are these providers doing to those we insure that just trust their doc and their ins. co? I caught a hospital charging almost 1k more for procedures I did not get when I stayed over 3 nights. I know that most of you don't follow up cuz who wants to read thru 19 pages of a hospital bill? And furthermore who out there really understands their EOB's? Are an employee of the ins. co, I know we are not perfect and many don't like us, but let me tell you...work with ur insurer to understand how things work. We are chnging our software all the time to focus more on patient education. Making you guys aware of what is going on with your own bodies. I know it is sad but that is the route we have had to take. I just had an upper GI and it was great but cuz my hemo's were low the doc wanted to do another in 8wks. For what? There is no reason for that. If I did not know how things work I woud go get one cuz I don't know any better I am trusting my doc. GI's they get good reimbursements BTW. for a 10 mins procedure. So I told him no I will wait for labs. if there are no ulcers no reason for 1 in 8wks. anyway...this is really about Aspen. They will scam u if they can. just the way business unfortunately has gone in this day and age and no one is exempt. so my advice is beware. be alert. pay attn to everything and get proof get things in writing. do your homework and research.

Aspen Dental Beware, they will try to get more $ than what you go for

I went there because I had a cracked tooth and wanted it extracted. They gave me antibiotics, which was the correct route to go in the beginning, after waiting aprox. 8-10 days they made a follow up apt for me to get the tooth extracted, being in severe pain for 8-10 days I was relieved that it would soon be over.

NOT! When they got me in, they talked of what I wanted for my FUTURE pertaining to my teeth, I had mentioned that I wanted to have implants in the future, but right now wanted to get this tooth extracted so I could eleviate the MAJOR PAIN i was in and then once I was ready, move forward with planning to get implants.

They took a slue of X-Rays and did other things that made me wonder...why do you want a full set of X-Rays NOW vs just the one tooth I want extracted. They then made me wait over an hr before they came back with a 7000.00 estimate of all the work that they were going to do in order to get me set up for dental implants, I told them NO...NOT NOW, I just want to get this tooth extracted because I've been in pain for well over a week, the dentist had the GAUL to tell me he would not pull it unless he pulled the other 4 teeth he wanted to pull and proceed with the dental implant process. Needless to say I argued the point with the dentist that I had initially come here for an extraction and would discuss the process of implants AFTER I wad done with the ordeal of extracting this tooth that had been bothering me for almost 2 weeks, he again REFUSED UNLESS I DID WHAT HE WANTED VS. WHAT I WANTED!

I left very upset and still with major pain with out getting the tooth pulled. IMAGINE HE REFUSED TO PERFORM THE SERVICES I HAD INITIALLY REQUESTED!

DO NOT GO TO ASPEN DENTAL, THEY WILL TRY TO MILK YOU OUT OF MORE SERVICES AND MONEY THAN YOU INITIALLY GO THERE FOR! THEY WILL RIP YOU AND YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY OFF FOR MORE CHARGES THAN YOU HAD PLANNED.

I am a dental hygienist not affiliated with Aspen Dental. Facial paralysis is a rare side effect of local anesthesia, but only if injected incorrectly. In my professional opinion, you should not wait to hire a lawyer; you should do it ASAP.

My Mom will be going to Aspen Dental, North Dartmouth for dentures, the office manager has messed up on the amount to be paid twice, good thing we caught it, she has told us that this will be the amount owed. Mom recently told me she read that in very small print it states something to the effect that the amount is subject to change. Well not sure what they are up to but, we will not pay anymore than what is stated. Also I am getting a little leery about this whole procedure at this place reading reviews through out the web Aspen Dental sounds more like a money making agency than a health care facility. Hope they stand by what they claim, "Aspen Dental is committed to your total satisfaction " After her procedure if they are any problems at all health wise or financial I will pursue further action.

Aspen Dental Bad faith

When I first went to Aspen it was ok. They seemed professional, efficient and, well, quite frankly good enough to provide me a replacement for my cracked upper denture. After many appointments, consultations and impressions, a rude letter that I hadn't made my next appointment quickly enough and being pushed to continue treatment before the time was right for me, what was supposed to be the finished product, (after they messed up and made the denture without my prior approval) was HORRIBLE. Not ONE change had been made to the wax model I had greatly disapproved of. I was then told we had to start all over again! I don't think so. I am currently drafting a letter to them to discontinue treatment. Will they harass me for money? Oh, probably. Next step is Attorney General. Thanks.

At my first appointment at Aspen Dental on 537 Lincoln St. in Worcester, they told me I had periodontal disease (gum disease) that would require deep scale cleaning and antibiotics that would cost me $1, 200. I couldn't believe this, since I have been taking good care of my teeth and gums, haven't experienced any symptoms, and didn't meet any of the major risk factors (smoking, genetics, obesity, certain medications and illnesses). I've since seen two other dentists who've inspected my gums and either looked at the x-rays taken at Aspen or took their own, and both concluded that I don't have periodontal disease.

Given that there were signs and articles all over the Aspen office about the problems related to gum disease, I find it very fishy that they would have made an incorrect diagnosis.

In other news, Aspen did do a good job with my fillings. Still, I suspect they may have been taking me for a ride with the gum disease diagnosis. And after reading similar postings all over the place, that suspicion is pretty strong.

Aspen Dental Dental cleaning

I chose Aspen Dental because I do not have dental insurance and the price seemed reasonable. I will never go back.

I have been to a dentist every six months my entire life, I had braces as a teenager and my teeth are in great condition. My cleaning lasted for about 20 minutes, which is not usual. Wendy (the hygienist which I would not recommend) man handled my mouth. She scrapped so hard using her tools I felt that the enamel on my teeth was being damaged. I made an appointment with a “real” dentist to have it checked out. Wendy scrapped so hard that my gums were bleeding, I was overwhelmed with the sensitivity in my teeth, and it felt as though she was drilling them manually.

When I expressed that I was in pain, she laughed and said she was having a hard time because I had tarter build up. If that was the case why did my cleaning take only 20 minutes! After Wendy polished my teeth she began to floss. Wendy was excessive in pushing down far into my gum line, beyond anything I had ever experienced with any dentist. When I expressed discomfort and asked her to please be gentler she stopped flossing my teeth and tried to sell me mouth rinse.

I will never go back here. I would rather spend $200 buck on a dentist that knows what the hell they are doing. Awful!

EXTREMELY POOR SERVICE AND RIP OFF. My wife made an appointment at Aspen Dental in Kingsport Tn. All she needed was a tooth glued back on to her pallet. We arrived 30 mins early as we expected to fill out a form as it was our first and last visit to this outfit. The form was garbage asking totally irrelevent questions, such as driver licence number and date of expiration. Annual income .Race and a load of question that they do not need to know. Our appointment was 4.00pm and where called in at 4.31pm. They insisted that my wife had to have xrays taken and mouth cancer tests done. After the xrays my wife waited 20 mins with no dentist seeing her then walked out. That seemed to have them stirred up and they asked us to wait about 10 more minutes, but we walked out but still had to pay $19.00. What a rip off place.

I have received EXCELLENT results from a complaint I made concerning my dental treatment and Aspen has agreed to refund nearly all of my costs.
I am hoping that other people are able to resolve their complaints as easily as I resolved mine - in fact, Aspen was very nice when they spoke with me and not at all defensive; just wanting to make sure I was satisfied with their offer to resolve my complaint, which they quickly did.

I am about to make a complaint concerning Aspen Dental in Keene, NH - not only did they give me a few thousand dollars in treatment, but there appeared to be a conspiracy between the dentist and the hygienist concerning the condition of my teeth and the treatment plan.
FIrst, the estimate and treatment plan totaled nearly the full amount of the credit I had obtained from Care Credit. My concern was that my teeth had deteriorated so much that I'd need them all pulled and move on to dentures. I ask them to give me the best, most logical plan. If there were teeth I would lose that would show when I smiled (I had several of them pulled in the back) then I'd prefer just having them all out rather than waste time and money on temporary solutions. They capped a couple (expensive) ; At the end of my "treatment" I was told I'd have to use flouride for the rest of my life; but then, "Oops" they found another huge issue on one of my front teeth. But drilled and filled, they fixed it - add more to the total cost. Then, at my next cleaning "Oops" they found another area in another tooth - this time, gouged out an area right on the gum line with a dental tool and asked me to make another appointment. Then, (I have bad eyesight) I noticed a rough edge on one tooth and upon inspection, I saw where every single tooth has eroded right along the gum line; in short, my teeth all should have come out. Now they say they can take them out for about 4, 000. more dollars - turning the two year "treatment" into an 8, 000 dollar ordeal. I not only believe they knew that my teeth were not salvageable, but they conspired to withhold the diagnosis from me, opting instead that I throw all my money at a lost cause. Now, with caps only a couple of years old, those teeth all need to be removed.
DON"T TRUST THEM ! I'm sure they have quota's and dollar amounts, being a chain, that they have to meet month to month - and they'll use you and mislead you to get there. They work together to accomplish this - and while you pay off the cost of bogus care, you'll have to be saving to fix their mistakes at a great cost. I don't have any more credit or money, and wake up every day with a tooth ache where they gouged out the enamel and left a huge hole; I have two teeth I can't bite with as they are painful. What am I going to do now? Complain and file suit if they have the gall to deny what they've done to me (which I anticipate they will do). They're nothing more than cheap carnie barkers who don't care about anything but how much you can throw at them and will lie in order to convince you - Go to a reputable, local dentist and forget the hype they're selling; because they can't help and won't be honest with you until you're bankrupt!

Aspen Dental Hidden cost-

Like many others, Aspen was the only game in town under my insurance. I don't have the best teeth and needed some basic fillings,
and a tooth extraction. The dentist was ok, did a fair job. The oral surgeon worked on me like he was pulling nails from a 2x4. Very rough and visibly impatient.

My problem was with hygienist. After the cleaning I was presented with the usual stuff, including an electric toothbrush with the Aspen Dental name on it. I thought this was a great deal - they give out electric toothbrushes, a week later I recieved a bill for $160 - for the elec toothbrush. Found out there cost was $60. I called and spoke to the receptionist, a snotty and indifferent kid. I explained that I didn't want the tooth brush and would not pay. Since it was opened, she said it was mine since I had opened the box, and then suggested I pay for it by credit card over the phone. I suggested that I would no longer be a patient and she responded with "ok, whatever" and hung up. Since I write for for the medical profession I began my research. Within several minutes I was reading ADA (american dental association) guidelines that state a dentist/dental practice can not charge for promotional items, ie the electric toothbrush with there name on it. I called back and spoke to the district manager. At first her response was the same as the other until I read the section in the ADA guidelines. I threatened to report them and finally I was told that there would be no charge. I gave the toothbrush back but continued to get calls from the snooty receptionist asking for money.

Aspen Dental Patient rights

On May 19, 2008, my husband needed to see the Dentist for an emergency for his lower left molar. The tooth was broken in half and the root was exposed causing severe pain up the left side of his face. When he entered Middletown Aspen Dental and told the staff of his emergency, he was turned away. They told him that they were "too booked today" to see him and had no openings. They also told him to come back on Wednesday (May 21st) for a possible walk in. When he arrived on Wednesday, he was told to try on Friday. Being that this is his dental provider, he did what they said.

I, myself, work in the medical field, and it is neither ethical or professional to turn away any patient who has an emergency no matter what the situation is. Your company's problems do not become the patient's problems whether the company is busy or short of staff. If the patient becomes septic and dies, this creates a large law suite for Aspen Dental. I will NEVER recommend this company to ANYONE. They have violated a patient's rights to be seen in a timely manner for an emergency. UNACCEPTABLE PRACTICE!

I agree with your assessment - my experience was limited to making an appointment two weeks in advance - waiting in reception for 2 hours - only to be called and told they had never had the opportunity to verify my insurance (although I had my card & identification, etc.) and therefore would be unable to keep my appointment - The forms I completed - I then removed from the premises and have not been back since!

You should file a formal complaint with the NY Dental Board about what happened. The only way that Aspen is going to be held responsible for what they are doing to people, is if everyone files formal complaints with the appropriate agencies. It is time consuming, I know, but just think of how many people are being affected by this company. It is disgusting that your husband had to endure the pain he did because of their inadequate staff! I listed this email address in another post but here it is again. aerwin@aspendent.com team leader, patient services, [protected] x1299 also contact the pres of Aspen rfontana@aspendent.com

Aspen Dental Inappropriate dentist!

I took my 16 year old son for a crown placement on 3/27/08. The first crown the doctor, Sophia Rodrigues, broke while trying to place it over my son's tooth. They tried to repair it for two hours, without coming to the waiting area to tell me what was going on. Needless to say, I was upset, but I was not rude or disrespectful. On 5/15/08 during the second attempt with a new metal crown, Dr. Rodrigues complained to my son about me being upset during the last visit and made my son extremely uncomfortable as he has been raised not to talk with adults about other adults, especially not his own parents. The next day, I telephoned Dr. Rodrigues to tell her in the future should she have any complaints or concerns about me she should speak to me directly and not talk to my minor child. The doctor was incredibly defensive, snotty, and denied she said anything to my son. She also called me "unprofessional" (I don't know why she called me this as I was calling as a concerned parent not as a "professional").

Since my husband pays a lot in dental insurance, not to mention the out-of-pocket expenses we incurred, I will be complaining to CEO /President Robert Fontana. Not only will I never go there again, I will not bring my other children and I will tell my friends, family (hell even my enemies!) not to frequent Aspen Dental. Oh, since the second crown was made from the cheaper metal, we are due a refund from Aspen Dental. I anticipate a long drawn out battle to get this money as when I brought up the refund to the receptionist, she told me it would be better to just use it towards other dental services at Aspen. Yeah right.

In all my life, I have never encountered a dentist as rude, defensive and unprofessional as Dr. Rodrigues. According to my dental insurance website, she graduated from dental school in 2005. Perhaps she was absent the day they taught how to interact with children patients, and how to speak with their parents. NEVER AGAIN!

I went to Aspen for an annual check-up and had to wait 45 minutes, with an appointment, before anything even happened. To top it off, the dentist comes in throwing prescriptions at me that I must purchase. He claimed I had four severe cavities, the beginning stages of gingivitis, and extreme sensitivity that can only be prevented by his prescriptions. He even prescribed me a medication that can get rid of the stains on my teeth that had been caused by braces without asking me if I'm alright with them or not. I then began to ask him questions about one of the prescriptions as he clearly stated that the toothpaste he's prescribing to me will reverse the decay of cavities ( which we all know is false information). He gave me a snotty attitude and stated that he obtained his degree from a high end college in N.Y. and knew more about the matter than I (If you were all wondering, I am a biochemist and chemical biotechnologist). They act like their patients are idiots and will throw money at them every which way. To prove that it's all a scam and they're greedy for money, I went to another local dentist and mentioned nothing about Aspen. When the check-up ended, this new dentist told me I have no cavities and my gums are very healthy. He also explained to me that sensitivity in the mouth is natural and a healthy sign that my nerves are working properly. This is officially my new dentist.

I totally disagree with Allison's complaint.

I have three children 4, 8 and 14 and I visited Aspen Dental in Stroudsburg, PA. fairly regularly between 2006 and 2008. Dr. Rodrigues had been our dentist for 2 years and was excellent. In fact, I went to Aspen based on the recommendation of a neighbor who said she was the best dentist she and her kids ever had. She was known to be very gentle with the kids and was the only dentist my kids were comfortable being treated by. Are you sure you saw Dr. Rodrigues and not the other Asian doctor? Dr. Rodrigues was always respectful, took her time treating my kids and explained everything to me in detail. I found this post while trying to find where Dr. Rodrigues moved to so I can take my kids to her again. If anybody knows where she is, please leave a message here.

This being said, I hope you found another dentist for your son soon after your ordeal. It surprises me that your son needed such extensive dental treatment at his age.

Unlike Gerald, I have only good things to say about Aspen Dental in Haverhill. I am sure there is a reason Gerald has the issues he does!
It is sad some people have so much trouble paying for their dental bills. My family and I are patients at the Aspen Dental Haverhill, MA and I think they are great. They have been very helpful and professional.
I have read many different complaints, some seem valid and others seem like really pathetic people who have nothing better to do with their time. How about people take some sense of responsibility. If you took care of your teeth than you would not have really expensive dental bills! It is so sad people have this much time to lodge complaints and post comments, perhaps you should find something better to do with your time.

You are correct to contact rfontana@aspendent.com to file your complaint. You may want to try contacting Amy Erwin at [protected] x1299 she is the patient services team leader and handles or forwards your complaint to where it should be and her email is aerwin@aspendent.com. Do not waste your time with any Regional Manager such as Kelly Marcinkewich because she is useless and doesn't do her job and you will not get anywhere with her. With any luck Robert Fontana will do something for you or have the right person get back to you to help you. This is ridiculous and needs to be stopped by this company Aspen Dental! I can't see this company being around long if this keeps happening with all the complaints people have.

I have never been treated so horrible as I was at the Aspen Dental at Watertown NY. My dentures are breaking down at a rate of every three months. They are only 5 years old, so I don't know if that is normal. Anyway, I cannot afford the $100 every three months to fix them. I am on a tight budget. I didn't buy the cheap dentures. I bought top of the line. I...

Aspen Dental Terrible in all ways

I just moved back to Mass, and my new employer's dental plan gave Aspen as the closest provider. Against my girlfriend's, who is a researcher, wishes I went ahead and scheduled work, I should have know that when looking at the estimate they were going to charge me over $100.00 for their reccomended toothbrush as well as $135.00 for Oral care instructions. They led me to believe that the deep cleaning that would be done in two sessions with my 50% insurance payment would be no more then $250.00 per visit instead the bill for the first session was almost $500.00 which included a charge for a toothbrush head which I did not order. I faxed the bill to my girlfriend who is actually in charge of research for a local agency. She had her staff fax the bill to several reputable dentists in the area and found out from all that the bill was totally out of line and bordered on fraud. I now have to retrieve my records and go to a reputable dentist to get the work finished. I think Aspen is both deceptive and disgracefull.

Aspen Dental Woburn is the first dental office i visited. The manager told after preliminary inspection of the dentist that I only need to pay the whole thing for about like $800., On my next visit for my appointment there's another charge for another problem..

I thought that I only need to pay $800 because they already told me . But after all 3 appointment It cost me $1600.

If your planning to visit a dentist dont waste your time & money in ASPEN DENTAL in Elm St. Woburn. Go somewhere else.

Aspen Dental Unsatisfactory service

On 2-19-008 I went for impressions for a full upper denture and a bottom partial plate. On 3-6-08 I received my upper, and was told my partial had not come in yet. I was called to come in on 3/18 /08 and was told that the metal on the partial had broken, and would have to be sent out and re-made. After hearing nothing from them I called on 4/2 and 4/3 and was told someone would call me back. Finally today 4/4 I received a call saying that the partial had come in. I asked if I could come and get it and was told not for 5 days. Very poor service - would not use Aspen again. They just want the money ($2700.00)

Aspen Dental Poor customer service

The office did in fact see me for an emergency with an abscessed tooth prescibing an antibiotic with a followup visit to extract the tooth. The intermediate laision individual contacted me the day before the extraction, to state we need clearance from your MD due to the aspirin you take from the initial patient information sheet from last fall. I do not take aspirin now - Only for the time from a broken foot. In the meantime, I have run out of the meds - I called this laision with no return call.

I strongly recommend anyone considering this particular office to seek other alternatives.

Aspen Dental Misleading!

Aspen Dental, Warwick, RI. I went to Aspen dental to get my teeth cleaned, and I wanted a tooth checked that was giving me some discomfort. When I filled out the papers for the necessary information, I put down my visit was for cleaning and check. I was given a full set of X-rays which I didn’t need and when the dentist checked my teeth, and the X-rays, he didn’t even see the cavity on the tooth that I wanted checked. I did have a broken tooth right above the one that was bothering me. His main concern was capping the one that was broken, and not taking care of the one that was bothering me. I made an appointment to get the cavity taken care of.

When I went for the appointment he started working on the tooth that needed a cap, and not on the one that needed the filling. I told him that I wanted the cavity taken care of on the lower tooth. He did the filling and then started working on the broken tooth that needed the cap, which I did not want done at that time. He went ahead and put a temporary filling in, and said nothing about a core buildup, which is needed for a crown. When I received my statement from the insurance company, it listed it as a core build up which is not covered by my insurance.

On the Aspen bill it was listed as core buildup with pins. I questioned the core buildup and pins listed on the Aspen statement. In a phone conversation I was told that there was one pin put in and that two were not needed. When I went to pay the for the core buildup with pin, I found out there were no pins at all and that the price was the same, with or with out pins. The person told me that it was listed as core buildup/pins, meaning that the core buildup could have pins, pin, or none. This in itself was inconsistent with what the bill stated, because on the Aspen statement it plainly stated core buildup with pins. Beware of Aspen Dental; they will take advantage of any person that is not aware of their pressure tactics. They obviously can’t keep track of what they do and don’t do. And are confused on the proper terminology too clarify their work done.

After reading quite a few of these complaints I knew I had to write one myself. I so hope that people will come here to read these comments before going to Aspen Dental.
I had changed dental insurance so scheduled a cleaning. I went in and after waiting 45 minutes, I was finally brought into a room to have X-rays done. I was then brought into a room which seemed more like a hair salon than a dental office. I got to watch TV while the hygenist poked around. I was still waiting for the cleaning...

After the "look around" and measuring the depth of gums, etc. I was told I would need 2 sessions of deep cleaning, I needed a cavity filled and my crown would need replacement. I would also have to buy this extremely important toothbrush...After TWO hours, and still no cleaning, and being practically forced to sign off on the treatments I walked out in tears and vowed never to return.

Went to my regular dentist and paid the extra fees as he was not one of the approved dentists for my insurance. The results...my teeth were fine ("You do a great job keeping your teeth clean"), I do have a tiny hole but it is NOT a cavity, my crown was irritated as I had a cold and the nerves in the tooth were hurting from the sinus pain.

DO NOT go to Aspen - they seem to tell everybody the SAME thing - we all seem to have horrible decaying teeth..

I sent my son the Aspen to have his teeth cleaned. He is 21 (a college student, still my dependent) and had his teeth cleaned regularly since he was 2. His regular dentist retired. He had the same experience at Aspen that you did. He waited for over an hour to be seen. Then after the poking around, he was seated with the billing girl and presented with a "treatment" cost of $1200. He told them he would have to talk to me since he was on my insurance and I was paying the bill. He never got the cleaning. When I inquired about the treatment, I was told that he had peridontal disease and needed deep cleaning and special products. I told them they were crazy that he had his teeth taken care of and the cleanings were covered in full by my insurance and any fillings would cost my only $20 or $30 out of pocket. I was told that the other dentist was not cleaning his teeth properly! When I asked for the breakdown, I was treated very rudely and told that the cost was for the total treatment. I insisted on a breakdown and finally had the paper literally thrown at me. It consisted of alot of unnecessary items. Things that the insurance would not cover. NO cleaning cost that much! They even charged for the visit and xrays even though they advertise that they are free for the new patient. When I asked about that, the girl conveniently had a large cardboard sign right beside her and she held it up in my face and pointed out the fine print that stated it was not include with any insurance coverage. Right there I knew they were scam artists. I said my son would not return. Bad part about it is that he now has to wait another 6 months for a cleaning at another dentist since they got the insurance money for that visit even though they did nothing. What crooks they are.

AS per American Dental Association CDT codes code for core build (with/without pins) is 2950. It is universal code and that is how it is listed. statement is not indicative. It is the dentist's treatment notes which will tell you, as on statement, whether pins were placed or not it will be Code 2950.

Aspen Dental Beware!

Thank you all for your comments. I had just received dental insurance from my new employer, and of course, the only Dentist in their network was Aspen Dental. I decided that I would try them out before sending my husband and four kids there. My first impression when pulling in was fear! They were located in a shopping mall! Oh well, I had a coupon so I knew I would be out of no money, It was only x-rays. I continued and check in, they had me waiting for 2 HOURS!

During these 2 hours I had plenty of time to watch how they operated. First of all, ALL the technicians appeared to be fresh out of college. (Nothing wrong with that, but I would have preferred to see a few people over 30 overseeing things). Then they proceeded to bring my fellow waiters up to the billing clerk to receive money prior to service. Now I was quite a bit skeptical. But I stayed the course and continued to wait, being thankful that I didn't put my kids through this.

Finally, my turn! I go in get my x-rays and continue to another room to wait, and wait, and wait another 45 minutes. Then a Doctor comes in, looks at my x-rays and tells me that I have the beginning stages of gum disease and 4 cavities. He then proceeds to insult an oral surgeon who had done work on me a number of years ago.

Then he has his assistant go through the "plan" with me. She said that I would need a slew of medications and flouride tied into all this work I would need. Flouride? for $85? I am over 30! Now I am feeling like this is a joke and there is a camera somewhere. I continue to speak to the billing/insurance girl before I leave. She continues to inform me that all this work I need done is going to cost me $2500!

I have never had a single cavity in my 30+ years, and brush, floss and wash regularly. I told the girl that I would not be making another appointment and conceded that this experience was one of learning, taking 3.5 hours of my life to investigate a dentist that I now know I will NEVER bring myself or my family to.

I to was misled by Aspen Dental- I had services done in there Dedham, Ma office - I went in for a exam and consultation- I was told that I had gum disease and that before any other issues were taken care of I needed to have this addressed immendiatly - I was given a estimate of $1, 255.00 -and I was
told that my Dental insurance would not cover any peridontal cleaning- Jennifer the fnancial person said that because of this she could give me the package for $1, 155.00.
I also asked for a Fee for services schedule - ( a break done of
exactly what I was paying fo) her response was that Aspen dental does not provide that to its clients. I consulted with My dental insurance carrier and they told me no matter what I
should only put done 50% of the payment and to make sure
that Aspen dental submittied the costs to them- When I went in for the cleaning I paid $562.50 of course on care credit-
I was also given the Rotodent and was told that it was part of the packagee there would be no additional charge. A few weeks later I receive a Bill from Aspen Dental Headquarter in the amount of 1, 785.00- I called to question this and the very
rude CSR told me to ingnore this and wait and see what my Insurance paid- Well they did get $500+ from my Insurance
company and they expect me to pay them a additional $600+
and guess what the ROtodent isn't part of the package either
I have tried to resolve this issue with them to no end-
they will not receive that balnce from me I would rathert go to court to resolve this issue - They are very deceitful in there
business practices and thay commit insurance fraud .

Aspen Dental Scam and dishonesty!

I recently moved to Keene, NH and found that Aspen Dental is the only dentist in town covered by my insurance. The staff seems very nice, but they told me I needed a special cleaning (it was really unpleasant) which I have never been told by my other dentists; gave me a mechanical toothbrush I don't need; and charged me $800 on a $1500 bill despite the fact that my insurance covers 80%. I talked to them and they said if my insurance pays more they will reimburse me after all payments are received. I am feeling REALLY uncomfortable about the whole situation. Are they padding my bill and performing procedures that I don't need? Beware!

Did it ever occur to you that you're all just a bunch whiney little [censor]es and need something to complain about? What do you think dentistry is? You have to mold a set of dentures to someones mouth, it's not perfect on the first try. You had to pull your rotten teeth out and make a set of dentures for all your dirty filthy mouths. If you brushed your teeth to begin with you wouldn't be in this situation.

I totally agree. I went to have teeth cleaned..came out and the receptionist told me I needed to pay 130 since it was a special cleaning (perio).. but it felt like a regular cleaning that lasted 15 mins. Yes they gave me lots of attitude. Turns out my insurance paid them a big portion. I was there again for a regular cleaning but again they refused to give me a regular cleaning so I had to pay for the more expensive one. I got on the phone to verify right then and there that I only had to pay a portion. I paid that amount and the receiptionist assure me that I would not get a bill. Of course I got another bill. I called them several times..now 4 months later I got this letter from a collection agency! I paid the amount upfront that day! Now they're so greedy that they don't even care about ruining people's credit. My family is staying away from them and you should too!

In 12/5/2006 i went to have my front teeth check for sensitivity.i think somewhere in between it was translated that i needed an x-ray, white filling and some cleaning, i ended up paying $300 cash after the insurance.i had all my back teeth drilled, broken and stuffed with white paste. three weeks laiter i was schedule a free cleaning which you normally get every twice a year but my cleaning was more like digging and scooping, ( beware of the hygienist)they had done a full mouth debridment without my knowledge, on my way out they handed me a rotodent eletric tooth brush and wished me merry chrismas. that left me more puzzled, i should have known they were too good to be true. a week laiter when i came back for the final filling when my mouth was nice and numb they handed me a$250 bill for the rotodent brush and full mouth debridment.i had paid a sum of $2000 including my insuarance, they had tried to bill my insuarnce for the cleaning, and got denied So they billed me instead.i returned there brush and yet they still bill me for the cleaning, they insist they were not in fault since the receptionistthat was there who had quit the following day supposedly should have informed me of the cleaning.how about the hygienist ? shouldn, t she have told me before shoving that rake in my mouth. i think aspen knows it has a very bad un-reversable reputation and soon to be wiped out, its trying to take everyone down no matter what. CAUTION. STAY OUT.

Contact the Better Business Bureau, Attorney General's Office and Medical Board within your state. You can also contact your insurance company's FRAUD department if you feel that this is happening. Insurance companies would entertain a fraud investigation for sure. I don't know anyone's age but if Medicare or Medicaid has been billed for services, you can contact that office to file a formal complaint with the government about Aspen. It's really saying something about Aspen when their own employees can't believe how awful the services are that people are receiving from Aspen and actually say this.

Had total extractions done on 9/27/2007. Received a "temp" set of dentures immediately. The bottoms are too big and I cannot chew. Aspen will NOT replace or redo so they sit in a jar and have for 6 mos., they insist that when I get my "permanent" dentures in 6 mos. they will be GREAT! Well 6 mos. has passed and I am in the final stages of the process. Have been fitted for my "permanent" denture, am NOT satisfied with the way they look or feel, the bottom teeth still look to be too large for my mouth and bite, but the dentist says "Don't worry, we have other methods to secure them..."implants" is what he suggests...(doesn't seem to care that when I walk away from my visit my bottom teeth do not stay in and they are once again in the jar at home, but they can do "implants" for about $2, 000 for the bottom teeth only. H'mmm. Because I am not satisfied with the results or the temp dentures, and cannot get them to re-fit the bottom denture (they cannot understand I want to use them as temp back-ups in case the permanent dentures break, etc) they refuse to understand my need for dentures that fit properly. These are my FIRST dentures, therefore, it has been a learning process...and NOT a good one! I have since cancelled by permanent dentures and am fighting for a credit on the total bill of $6, 800. Wish me luck! And stay away from these Inept, con-artists who never understand English, except when you are deciding whether or not to get dentures (which they guarantee 100% satisfaction... They are the worst!

They are supposed to have someone in their office that can verify benefits and once they verify benefits, they should bill ur insurance and only charge u the 20%. Esp. if they are preferred providers with ur insurance. They agree to accept their allowable fees and you are responsible for your copays.

If u paid this upfront and they receive 80% pay from ur insurance... U WILL NEVER SEE THE OVERPAID AMOUNT BACK. I can guarantee that. They can't even tell you what they do with a credit balance.. the money seems to disappear.

I don't know what they do with it, but something is dead wrong herbe. IN a fraudulent way.

Usually when a business practices in this manner, criminal activity is involved. Didn't say they are guilty of criminal activity. But I would love for 1, just 1 person employed in the office to explain why NO MATTER WHAT, YOU CAN'T GET A PRINTOUT OF ACTIVITYTHAT REFLECTS BOTH YOUR CREDIT BALANCE AND THE CHARGES IN DESCENDING ORDER OF WHEN IT HAPPENED.

IT SHOULD BE AS EASY AS PUSHING A BUTTON. THEN PRIN T OUT THE TRANSACTIONS OF PAYMENT FROM THE INSURANCES AGAINST UR BALANCES.

But yet, they refuse to do so. Or are too ###ed to understand THE LAW ENTITLES YOU TO SEE THE WHOLE PROCESS AND SEE EVERY SINGLE TRANSACTION, ALL TOGETHER.

It's not optional for them. BY LAW, THEY ARE OBLIGATED TO PROVIDE EACH AND EVERY PATIENT WITH FULL ACCOUNTABILITY AND THEY DON'T. THEY PRETEND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOUR TALKING ABOUT WHEN YOU ASK FOR THE ###ING THING.

THIS TELLS ME THEY HAVE LOTS TO HIDE...IT ALSO TELLS ME I WON'T PUT UP WTH IT.

Let them bill me again without sending me every single transaction in the last 3 years and I will talk to EVERY MEDIA OUTLET IN NEW ENGLAND AND WON'T STOP UNTIL TV STATIONS AND NEWSPAPERS ARE CAMPED ON EVERY ASPEN DENTAL PARKING LOT FOR MILES AROUND.

Something is more than a little wrong with the way they do business. I just wonder if the lady I talked to today was high off the dental gas or what.
