On August 4th, my air conditioner stopped blowing cool air. I am 77 years old and live in Phoenix, where heat is life-threatening. I followed their rules and submitted an emergency request through their portal at 4:30 am. They assigned a local vendor, Crispy Air, who told be at 8:00 am that their earliest appointment wasn't for two days (August 6) and that they had already notified AHS of this delay.
Knowing a two-day wait in August would cause a medical crisis, I called AHS repeatedly starting at 8:30 am. They refused to pick up, forcing me into an automated callback queue that they completely ignored. By the early afternoon, my indoor home temperature skyrocketed to a dangerous 93 degrees. For my own health and safety, I had no choice but to pay out-of-pocket for an outside emergency HVAC technician to fix the unit.
When I finally got a human on the phone the next morning to ask for reimbursement, the representative hung up on me. When I followed up via email, they deny my claim by saying I called "before hours." When I pointed out that their website explicitly advertises 24/7 emergency service intake, they changed their story and claimed they meant the vendor's business hours.
AHS takes your money but will twist their own policies to abandon vulnerable senior citizens in dangerous conditions. I will file formal complaints to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Arizona Department of Insurance (DIFI).
Save yourself the money, anger, and the physical danger - STAY FAR AWAY FROM AMERICAN HOME SHIELD (AHS).
Recommendation: STAY FAR AWAY FROM AMERICAN HOME SHIELD (AHS).
