Viator review: Viator Tours - Antelope Island Wildlife Expedition Great Salt Lake Adventure out of Salt Lake City
In January 2026 I purchased the Antelope Island Wildlife Expedition Great Salt Lake Adventure tour from Viator for October 25, 2026. The tour was for 5-6 hours starting at 2:00 pm.
We were charged on October 24 and I received a text with a link for my voucher. The link was broken and did not connect, but I knew that would not be a problem (that happened for a tour on October 24).
I did not see it but later the tour operator texted that the tour would not leave until 2:40. When I saw that text I was already walking to the pick up point. Then I received another text at 2:24 indicating the operator would be an additional 15-20 minutes late. I called the operator and indicated the delay was unacceptable and I cancelled. It was clear that 3:00 pm was a hope, not a guarantee. That would put the tour ending at 8 or even 9 pm and we had to drive in the mountains after the tour. Leaving after 8 pm was unacceptable.
I was unable to reach Viator because they had no available customer service number I could locate on my phone. I reached them later from my hotel and explained. The representative was unimpressive and was unaware of much. He also was unable to reach the tour operator. Later he emailed me denying my request for a refund. The email indicated: "our tour description clearly states that the experience includes watching the sunset at Antelope Island State Park." He might wish it said that, it does not. Instead it says:
"Overview
The tour to Antelope Island stands out for its unique combination of wildlife, history, and breathtaking landscapes. You will see free-roaming bison, antelopes, deer, and more than 250 bird species in their natural habitat. We visit the historic Fielding Garr Ranch – Utah’s oldest preserved building, where the stories of pioneers come alive. For active travelers, an easy hike to Buffalo Point offers unforgettable panoramic views of the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains. The tour also unveils the island’s ecological wonders – from tiny brine shrimp to pristine night skies, considered among the best in the USA for stargazing. With small-group transportation (maximum 13 travelers) in a comfortable Mercedes Sprinter, a professional guide, and convenient pickup in Salt Lake City, you will enjoy a seamless and personalized experience. Carefully designed to balance adventure, relaxation, and discovery, this journey reveals Utah's hidden gem near Salt Lake City."
The final detail hints at sunset but nowhere does it say 9 pm or that the tour will start an hour late.
The representative also said I was notified of the delay with time to cancel. That is demonstrably false. I was notified after I was charged and was notified of an even longer delay at 2:24 pm, almost half an hour after the tour should have started. I was shocked that such a obvious falsehood would be placed in writing as an excuse for refusing a refund.
Claimed loss: $166.10
Desired outcome: A full refund.
