Verizon has willfully violated my rights under the fair credit reporting act (fcra) by inaccurately reporting a charged-off account across all three major credit bureaus. They then sold this debt to a collection agency that is not licensed to operate in the state of illinois, my legal state of residence.
After I sent a debt validation request, the third-party collector returned the debt to verizon and confirmed that they are no longer pursuing collection. A week later verizon sent me an email informing me another debt collector owns the account which doesn't have license to collect a debt in illinois. Despite this, verizon continues to report this debt to the credit bureaus, which is unlawful and damaging to my credit profile.
I have submitted disputes with the bureaus, filed formal complaints with the bbb, cfpb, and illinois attorney general, and am now pursuing full public exposure of verizon’s unlawful actions. Glassdoor, riddit, scam report, trustpilot as well this includes violations of:
• fcra 15 u.S. C. § 1681s-2 (b) (failure to investigate disputes)
• fdcpa violations through third-party collection missteps
• state licensing law violations related to unauthorized debt collection in illinois
Consumers deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, and due process under the law. Verizon has failed on all counts.
Recommendation: Please be careful choosing Verizon as your carrier
