Dear Pick & Pay
RE: MISLEADING & DISCRIMINATORY MARKETING PRACTICES BY PICK & PAY
I would herewith like to complain about the misleading marketing campaign you have with your
"Collectaboks" rugby cards.
I this evening had an unsavoury experience at your Key West, Krugersdorp branch at around 18h04.
My Grandson collects these cards and I specifically went to purchase some products so that he could
obtain some more cards. He accompanied me and was a witness to everything that transpired and even
asked why they are treating us unfairly.
The lady in front of me (a Pick & Pay employee), purchased something for R70 and was given a pack
of rugby cards. I thought this strange but did not say anything. I then did my purchase to the value of
R 2 161-95 and was only given three packs of cards. I thought I should have been given four packs
as per what was advertised. I then complained and they told me it is how it is, the system tells them what
to give the customer. The Lady behind me then purchased some cold drinks to the value of R55 and was
handed four packs of rugby cards. This is when I asked to speak to the Manager.
The Manager arrived but was no help at all, she had an attitude and told me to contact head office.
She pointed to my till slip showing that the system said I qualified for only three cards although I spent
more than R 2000. How did those that spent only R55 qualify for four packs and I only qualified for three.
It makes absolutely no sense, is contrary to what was advertised and I felt discriminated against as I felt
there was some element of racism involved as I was white and the other two customers black.
Herewith a photo of my till slip:

Below a photo of the manager who should not be allowed to deal with the public as she made no effort
to assist, stated her case and walked away. In the background one can see another false advertising board.

Below is the sign (one of four) at the entrance to Pick & Pay, Key West, along with more signs throughout
the store explicitly stating "Earn one pack for every R500 you spend."

On the Pick & Pay website you state exactly the same, "Spend R500 to earn a pack."
Herewith a snapshot from your website:

You even on your website (screenshots below) promote a fair marketplace and state the consumer has
the right to equality in the marketplace, the right to fair and responsible marketing, and the right to
protection against discriminatory marketing practices. Please practice what you preach as you are not
adhering to any of the above.
Pick & Pay, your advertising is misleading, you are not fair, you do not promote equality, and then you are
racist and discriminatory as well. Please remove the below statements from your website.
I need to state that I am not a regular Pick & Pay customer, I stopped shopping with them about fifteen years ago when
their standards deteriorated and they could no longer compete with the likes of Checkers and Woolworths.
This visit just reaffirms why I made that choice years ago.
I do not expect any response from Pick & Pay, and I am OK with that. I will however spread the word out there, ensure
the likes of Hello Peter, and other complaint platforms, including Facebook, get to know about this misleading and
discriminatory practices of Pick & Pay, and that I will discourage all my friends and family from supporting them going forward.
Regards
Fodin
