Navy Federal Credit Union [NFCU] review: Purposely deflating a property value for a HELOC
I recently applied to Navy Federal for a HELOC on my home as a backstop to my daughter's college expenses. Their automated system came back with $1.1M and I said that was low so I asked for a full appraisal done by a human. I did this as my direct neighbor had just sold for $1.2M.
Their human appraiser came in even lower with $970K comparing my house ti others that were 1/3 of the square footage instead of my direct neighbor who had recently sold with similar footage and features.
I then went to Bank of America and applied for a HELIC. They did a more professional appraisal. That appraisal came back at $1.28M. This is not a small delta between both Navy Federal's automated appraisal or their human appraisal.
I canceled my application to Navy Federal but there is something very off for an organization that says they look out for Veterans. They do not and it seems shady.
Recommendation: Do NOT use Navy Federal if you are a Vet.
