I went to shop for a few items at the Meijer located in Auburn Hills (800 Brown Rd), around 10:00pm, within the items I picked up Last Call Triple Sec and two bottles of Barefoot Fruitscato wines. I went through self check out and when I scanned the first item, a store associate came over to “verify my age” I searched my purse and I did not have my drivers license present but I did have a photo of my license front & back in my phone, they refused to sell me the alcohol. I purchased the other items and left because I knew my driver’s license was at home, left in another purse, I forgot to swap everything out when I switched purses. I went to my car and realized I had my license that just expired in Feb 2023, since they needed to see a physical ID to confirm my age, this should have been enough to suffice. But instead of confirming my age they still refused to sell me the alcohol because the license was not deemed valid. I asked to speak with a manager and he said they could lose their liquor license if they sold me the items and they found out later that I was underage. I said it’s either you need to verify my age, which is 29, or you need to verify something else. I never had this issue at any Meijer. Meijer associates have the option to enter the DOB as the computer has “DOB Entry” option on it during check out. My license being expired does not change the fact that I am of legal age to purchase alcohol. This store definitely lost a loyal customer. I had proof of my DOB for them to verify that I was old enough to purchase the items and they still refused. That will be the last time I shop at their location. That was totally uncalled for. They were going to make me drive all the way back home just to get the renewed license which had the exact same picture and of course the same DOB.
Desired outcome: I would have liked to have been able to purchase my items hassle free, my expired license with my DOB should have been enough to verify my age.
